LESS Alcohol ~ JULY 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

Back from our quick reunion trip to San Diego. All flights were on time and we had no issues which made travel much easier for me!
It was great to see old friends from way back and I did pretty pretty well navigating food choices and drinks galore. Particularly as activities, dining and meals were preplanned by two people who coordinated the event. About 30 people came in from CA, Virginia, South Carolina, and Arizona to attend. So nice to catch up on life stories! And even though I was worried about the open bars, I enjoyed but didn’t go crazy with guilt (thanks to wisdom from several of you)!
I found out a few folks had quit drinking all together and another friend lost his wife to a brain aneurysm a year ago. Not to be a downer, but a very close friend of my DH also has Parkinson’s disease and the physical progression over the last 5 years was very apparent. That was hard to see but happy he can still socialize and wants to. I was humbled and reminded that good health is truly a gift.
Okay, so I had some extremely delicious (and expensive) red wine two nights in a row and none last night.
Very happy I kept to my plan of AF last night!

@itladyee - Congrats on your real estate transactions and all the best with your move! They say that buying and/or selling are top stressors for individuals even when it’s for a good reason. My calf/ankle muscles are mostly healed but it did take over a full month of being super cautious and no exercise. Wearing more supportive shoes as well. Thanks for asking!4

So I haven't had a drink since Saturday night, which is a great/sightly weird feeling. Going into the weekend always stresses me out, but I'm trying to stay in the moment. It's my choice, not that calendar's right??
Going on a day trip tomorrow and want to wake up strong so I can enjoy the shore and a beach walk. Having a plan for the next day definitely helps me.
Healthy weekend vibes to all!

Woke up this morning and as I was sipping coffee glanced at the calendar.
Today marks 4 weeks with no consumption of any alcohol.
Good points are-
*Not tearing out my hair to keep from tipping a glass.
*Not debating with my self when we go out to eat whether to have ONE or not.
*Tuning out husband when I pour peach tea into a stemmed glass at home and he reminds me of all the alcohol based drinks in the house I could be pouring into my glass instead.
*Handling many stressful life situations recently without numbing them out of my head with booze. (This one should get 5 gold stars!)
Now to get rid of about four pounds so my knee has less weight to carry around.
Welcome backs to those who have been busy moving, vacationing and taking care of loved ones.
REMEMBER:
You can give up-
Give in-
Or give it ALL you got.
😁

LA friends, this morning I was thinking of what my personal best looks like….
Today, I’m going to give it ALL I’ve got to make better choices all around and thanks @MissMay for those great reminders. Congratulations on 4 weeks since no alcohol!
@AF_Brat you’re absolutely right! We can reframe how we approach the ‘weekend’ - keeping our goals in mind, and staying in the moment is a great plan. Have fun on your day trip!

Had friends and family here to celebrate MIL’s belated birthday since she was in the hospital on her birthday. It was great!
I did say I would not open my wine unless my BFF decided to drink, and she decided to drink on Saturday. I joined her, but we started around 3pm and stopped about 9pm. I drank 1 bottle of wine minus the 1 glass my sister-in-law drank over that 6-hour period. I didn’t even have a buzz, so it was just a good relaxing day.
My brother-in-law brought me 2 bottles of wine as a gift. So, I now have 2 bottles of wine on my counter.
I’m sure I exceeded calories for the day yesterday, but I’ve been very good all week. So, I’m hoping it won’t affect my weigh-in tomorrow morning too much.

New book share from the LA resource thread ……***posting for general purpose only***
Yesterday, I read the First Five Chapters offered for free in Alcohol Explained by William Porter. The book is for anyone who wants to learn more about the chemical, physiological, and psychological effects of alcohol using science based evidence in these areas — anxiety, depression, sleep, obesity, and cravings, etc. I found it to be written in a pretty straightforward and easy to understand way and the explanations so far are very interesting.7 -

I wish I knew the answer to that one. Today's a new day!
Not doing so well. I thought of just ignoring this group and just going on about my business until August, but changed my mind.
Have a good week, everybody!

Oh gee @tmbg1 my response is MIISSING in my post above .
I was writing to say it is more than likely because of this:
F. Scott Fitzgerald's quote,
'First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you,'
encapsulates the gradual progression of indulgence and its transformative power.
I have posted this quote many times and this exact process has also taken me down too many times. You are human, pick up, dust off, we are here and today is a new day to make things right.

So glad you did not ditch July all together you have plenty of time (15 more days) to make even the smallest change.7 -
July LA is going so much better than the last couple of months, hallelujah. Improved on AF days this past weekend.
Our weather has also finally cooled down from over 100 degrees for what seemed like weeks on end. Back down to the mid 80’s - a much needed break. Planning on taking advantage of the cooler mornings and going on regular walks this week.
Happy Monday everyone!5 -
This weekend annoyed me. Well not the weekend, but people out and about I do not even know making comments on my AF beverage choices.
I am not flaunting my AF decisions when out eating or at a music venue. I get my beverage usually stemmed glass or in a frosted pint glass.
The wait staff was too slow with my frosted glass and a dude sitting next to me just had to go off on me with, how could I be ingesting that %$#@ tasting stuff? Yea well by now the whole place has an ear on this wasted sole and I am left to defend myself alone.
I handled it better than I would have in the past. The only thing I said was that I have no second thoughts or concerns with getting behind the steering wheel of a car today, how about you?

I've been keeping up on reading but not doing much posting this last week other than accountability posts. My 92 y.o. mom is visiting for two months, half at my sister's and the other half with us (she lives full time with our other sister in NJ). She wasn't supposed to be at our house until later this month, but DS's AC broke so we have Mom here a little earlier than expected.
@NonnieDoiron congrats on the great weigh-in last week. Your ring is beautiful, so happy for you that you can wear it again, even if it's just for short amounts of time. Nice run of AF days you have going this month, despite the stress you're going through and a husband who seems to not quite get it.
@DrBenja and @AF_Brat nice to meet you both, I hope you become a regular part of the group.
@Womona I admire your ability to stop at just one or two - if I could do that I probably wouldn't think twice about my drinking habits.
@itladyee I hope your unpacking is coming along smoothly. We've moved a couple of times, and unpacking is definitely a long, arduous process.
@Michieb125 Glad to hear you had a fun trip.
@Missmay Big Congrats on the 4 weeks AF. I love those things you pointed out as the good points. Not sure why some people feel they have to comment on anything a total stranger is doing just because they aren't (or can't) do it! Your answer to the jerk was perfect.
@tmbg1 Good job with the AF days so far this month!8 - AF

@chicbuc I agree with everyone else. Just hang tight! July is only half way through… still plenty of time work towards better numbers. But, even if the number doesn’t get better, that’s ok too! You’re here and being accountable for your actions, and that is half the battle.

Weighed in this morning to no weight loss, but no gain either. So, I’ll be watching every morsel of food and walking everyday. Today was HOT! Sure the temp was only 88°, but the heat index was 97°! Talk about swamp-butt!! YUCK! From 2 days of not walking, I picked up a half a kitchen trash bag of litter from our road. The trash pick up seems to be the only thing that gets me out to walk. I hate seeing the litter. But, I’m so surprised how many liquor bottles and beer cans I find every day. Today, I think I collected a 6-pack of Bud Light cans.🙁
Anyway, going to watch some tv and knit. I’m tired this evening.5 -

Love this group! For me, it’s like I know I will fall down but how I get back up matters most and everyone here is so supportive and kind.
My plan is to rack up some more AF days this week and keep within calories limits and serving sizes on all food/drink.

Had some wine last night, then some more. Feel like crap this morning. I wish I could take a picture of how bad I feel physically, then the next time I think about having a drink I can look at the pic to remind me. I've tried writing it down, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.
Anyway, I really love this group and just want to say thanks for giving me a place to vent.
I had 3AF days in a row before last night, so I'm going to shoot for another three starting today to improve my July stats .

I am a huge art enthusiast. This piece (to me) needs no interpretation.
Take it all in

Did my walking and skipped the wine last night as planned. Woke up with more energy and an improved outlook for the day - go figure right?
Heading out for coffee with a friend and will get more walking in. Another AF night planned. I’m claiming it now.
Current for today:
AF days - 8
A days - 9

@SparkSpringtime69 - we’ve all been there! Remember, you did 3 AF days in a row which is SO positive. Try to be patient with yourself and keep moving forward on your path.7
