WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JULY 2024

Flea - I had to laugh at the “vintage” all in the wording. 😂
Kim - Glad you had a better visit than expected with your mom.
I have read any of her JD Robb books.
Kylia - Rodger and I went to a car show today and they had a Shelby there. I told DH about you. I told him you had other cars too, but didn’t remember what.
Rebecca - it would make me sad too. I get that. I’m had that problem with Kaitlyn for a bit, she would visit friends and think nothing of the drive and not visit me. I tried to remember what I was like at those ages and could remember times when I know I hurt my parents by not visiting them as often or as long as they would have liked. I regret some of those decisions now.
Ours were across the country though not within a little drive.
Barbara - that sounds like a pricy repair bill. I’m sorry you are having to deal with it.
Lauryn, Ryan and the Grands came out about 830pm and we went to see the fireworks. They were nice and the kids were happy so it was fun.
I am going to bed as soon as my feet warm up.

Great to see you all enjoying yourselves, Tracey. Precious moments ❤️ 😊
I walked up to the Post Office to send John's hat back. Google says it is 0.4 of a mile. On the way back, I called in at the mini supermarket to get feta and scallions. Couldn't resist asparagus! So, all in, I must have done 0.9 of a mile. I rested on a wall coming home, outside the Jehovas Witness church! My back is the main bother, but I managed ok.
I'm going to make the Skinny Taste Spinach and Feta pie for dinner. It's really a savoury cake. Haven't made it for ages! Michele, I know you used to make it. I thought of you on Sunday when I used the last packet of my shiritaki noodles in my curry laksa. I've got a new batch coming today.
I'm making the cake because I want to go to the Death Café this evening. I can eat my portion a bit early, and John can have his when he feels like it.
I haven't been for quite a few months now. I will get an Uber.

Today was 91 (33 C) plenty hot for me and it is our cool day for the next 5- 6 days, tomorrow is to be 102 (39C). I am working the fans and opening windows at night as I do not have AC. But it made me think of you Lisa when you said how much the window cling stuff was helping. I looked it up on line and there are a hundred, million, trillion choices (ok that is an exaggerated count LOL) You said you were saving a bunch of degrees (9? cooler) and I wondered which you picked, does it cling to the inside or outside??? Will you take it down in the winter? I have double paned windows and read something about too much heat and the windows cracking…… I have questions!!!
Thinking of you all,
Kim in N. California
Kim - So glad your trip to your mom's was good... as far as the windows go, kinda boring for anyone not interested, but here's my answer:It's almost impossible to figure out how much the tint is dropping the house degrees, but subjectively, the window air conditioners seem to be on less often than I would have expected at the nearly 100 degrees we're getting these days. They certainly are bringing much more light in than the blackout curtains, and I can still see outside, so there's that.
Regarding damage to the windows, the answer is, "it depends." I have double-paned windows throughout, and the three oldest ones already fog, meaning they are compromised and need replacing. That expense comes well down the priority list for us at the moment. Of the newer ones, only one is fogged, so I did the research. Of course!
What it boils down to is temperature and absorption. I'm using reflective tints, so there's no heat absorption in the tint itself, or very little. If I put on a dark, light-blocking, non-reflecting film that absorbs heat, because it's laid right on the glass, it could have damaged the inside pane by getting the glass pane higher than it's rated. All mine are reflective. The only other issue would be if there were massive, swift temperature changes, like desert or mountain living, where the temperature can drop or rise 30 to 40 degrees in a few hours. Reasonably slow temperature changes don't impact the glass. That said, ALL of them are going to say "Don't use on double-paned windows," to avoid liability.
Lastly - this is a film sheet, which, while in your hands, feels kind of like a massive version of the old film strips in non-digital cameras. When you strip off the backing, it is much less stiff, and pretty thick feeling. There's no adhesive; you just spray the inside of the clean window and the back of the film with soapy water, put the pre-cut piece on the window, and smooth it down with something like a squeegee. I'm actually using a plastic bowl scraper that has a flat side - it fits my hand and the small window panes like the 6x11 panes in my door. Thank goodness I only had one of those that is in direct sun! With 9 panes in the door, I felt like I was cutting forever...
I do have to say, I have no idea whether they will come off easily at the end of the summer, but I'm going to try an experiment. I plan to peel it off of one window in the back bedroom. Then I'll let it sit for a week or two and try to reapply the film, to see if it works. I'm getting so used to them that it may not be an issue, and I may leave them up year round. Haven't decided yet.
These are the ones I got, but I don't think one is better or worse, I just had to get reasonably inexpensive ones that were wide enough to fit my biggest windows and since they're cut to fit, of course they would fit all my smallest ones from there.

Barbara AHMOD - Oh my stars, I would struggle with not being able to shower. Glad you're able to soldier on through... but I'd be living in a hotel somewhere, hang the expense. Not having showers is at the top of the list of "reasons I do not go camping." 😁😬🤣
Jean in NJ ( @JeanCricket ): Welcome! It's a wonderful group of women, and we're always glad to add someone to the list. Keep coming back, chime in where you can, and as you've probably already realized, we have a number of caregivers in the bunch who are trying to keep themselves healthy while caring for those they love.

Good morning ladies!
Rita so glad you are losing weight. Yay!
Kylia glad the CPAP is working out.
Lanette great the your back exercises are reducing your pain.
Flea what a beautiful place! Enjoy!
Rebecca have a wonderful trip!
Jean welcome! It's so hard to be a caregiver and still take care of yourself. Several of us care for elderly parents.
Barbara that's one way to get to the gym!
Kim I read JDRobb too. But I prefer Nora Roberts books. I will have to think about why.
Dad just announced he was going walking again. I can't go, I have to do laundry and get ready for his medical appointment. So he can't go without me. It's taking forever for him to lose the habit. I'm getting better at telling him no.
Yesterday I ate by plan until about five thirty. I tried to make Cole slaw for a snack, but it was awful. Not sure why. I ended up eating egg rolls instead and blew my calories. Today is a fresh start.
Have a great day my friends! May you be happy, healthy, safe and free!
Annie in Delaware6 -
Okay, got the laundry started.
Lately any walking brings up little aches and pains in my legs. It feels like I am getting too heavy for my joints again. I need to go back to five minutes on the bike. So I need to look harder at how to make that happen. Mornings are tough because dad is prone to leave the house, so I have to keep an eye on him as soon as he gets up which is anywhere from seven to ten.
Hmmm. Maybe I need to bring the bike upstairs. I will have to think about that.

I’m glad you figured it out.
Have a great day everyone
Tracey in Edmonton
The heavy bit of hair, on my left side, that would fall in my eyes is held out of my eyes with hair spray. I put a squirt in there to hold that side up a bit, and give it a bit of a blow-dry. That's about all I do with my hair in the mornings.
I used a new hairspray this morning. I've still got a faint lingering scent of the old one because it takes more than one wash to get it out, but I was pleased that the new one had a brief scent when I put it on, and then the smell disappeared. I just have to work out how much to use - each hairspray is different. I just need to hold the one side out of my eyes.
AND ... no headache today!

Bad wifi, resort doesn't have it all, so will have to post pictures later.
At diamond lake "resort" now. We are in a "vintage" cabin, which basically means they don't take care of it, but it is clean and on the lake, so it's fine.

Nice!
I was meant to go there back in 2004.
I had gone down to Davis, CA for an ultra-distance cycling event which didn't work out as well as I had hoped but it was an adventure.
Anyway, when it was time to go back to Canada, my plan was to catch an overnight train from Sacramento to Klamath Falls, then I think I was going to rent a car, drive over to Medford and stay overnight with people I know. Then drive to Crater Lake, cycle around the lake, and back to Klamath Falls where I would catch a bus to Vancouver.
Instead, I ended up staying overnight at the Sacramento Train Station because the train was that late. It finally turned up at about 7:30 am and by then my plans were out the window. I stayed on the train to Eugene, got a motel there overnight, then caught the bus to Vancouver from there.
And I missed seeing Crater Lake. I'd still like to see it one day.

Hi Gals,
Nora Roberts also writes as JD Robb - different premise but similar writing style. I have enjoyed both.
Thinking of you all,
Kim in N. California
I like both, but one issue with Nora Roberts is that she's got all these trilogies and I hate it when I read a book, and then discover it's the first or second of a trilogy. It's so hard to find the rest of the trilogy and leaves me with an unsettled feeling.
So I try to only read Nora Robert's single books unless I get into a trilogy by accident.

When you exercise regularly, you really miss it if you don't do it for a day or two. I start to climb walls!! I get so restless.
Maybe rather than him losing a habit, you'll gain a habit.

Happy Canada Day to those celebrating!
Just relaxing this morning, letting the world slide off my shoulders because, after all, it doesn't belong there, now does it. 👀🤣
🌳Messaged the tree guy at 4:30 yesterday to see if he planned to show up... and he texted back to say they were just finishing up and then would be here. He never showed. Corey wasn't miffed about it, just said the guy overbooked, and it wasn't worth sweating. My husband is a much nicer person than I am, in many ways. The guy just texted and said he'll be out today to get it done. I know within reason that as soon as I step in the shower, that's when he'll show up. That's a corollary to Murphy's Law if there ever was. Should have taken a shower yesterday, but I procrastinated...
☎️ I also procrastinated yesterday about making phone calls that I need to make, because they're all medical, and it's always a hassle. I knew it wouldn't work when my gastroenterologist APRN wanted to refer me to a dermatologist and an ophthalmologist. Not because it's not possible, but because there was no way her office was going to check to see if the referral they made was to a doc that works with the VA. That's just beyond their scope.
⚕️So, the dermatologist's office called me yesterday to schedule, and of course, they don't work with the VA. I need to call the VA community care office, and I just dread making those calls. It's like trying to teach a pig to sing. Just wastes your time and annoys the pig.🐷I will just have to gird my loins (pork loins? Ha! Sorry, bad pun.) and do it anyway. I think, in the end, I'll have to get an appointment with my primary and get referrals through him.
And... that's about it for me for the day. Maybe some quilt work, maybe diving back into Three Against the Witch World by Andre Norton again. Taking me right back to the few good things about my teenaged years.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in AR

No Bea pick up today. She has a rescheduled violin lesson.
DDIL knew how disappointed we would be, so she's arranged for the girls to come over on Sunday afternoon. They also asked John over on Saturday evening to watch the England football match with them. They didn't ask me. I wonder why. He was pleased to be asked. The only problem is, there will be no beers! Only AF ones, which won't calm the nerves!
Just about to start the cake. I was so knackered after lunch, I had a nap for an hour and a half!
I'm worried about my friend G, who is in pain with her back. She is seeing a physio this afternoon. She has been on steroids for over six months. Also has sun sensitivity from Doxycycline. And exhaustion. I feel so helpless. She has made an appointment with the country's best expert on bullous pemphigoid, up in Harley Street, this month. She may get referred to Guys Hospital from him. Costly, for one consultation, but it makes her feel better that she is doing all she can.
She is hoping to go up to London on the train on Thursday to see her granddaughter, who is over from Singapore with her mother.

Listened to another interview with Dr. William Davis author of Wheat Belly. He his background is in cardio vascular disease. He got in the study of the microbiome when his own mother died from heart disease. He is in the camp of eating a high fiber mostly plant diet with fermented foods and some meat. Ideally the meat comes from a healthy animal. There are microbes in the gut that help us live a healthy life and microbes that create illness especially if they get out of control. When some species die in our gut they create entoxins which create other nonsense in our bodies. He believes that wheat especially our modern wheat is not digested well by our bodies. Other grains also have their issues too. Rice flour which is often used in gluten free products can spike insulin.
When patients come to him he recommends a grain free diet. He does tell them there will be withdrawal symptoms. He is not in favor of a Keto diet because it does not feed enough of the good bacteria. You will notice a weight loss on Keto but being on it long term is not the answer.
My goal is to stay on the diet I am eating as best I can. No grains especially wheat, corn, oats..High in multiple kinds of veggies, herbs, and fermented foods used as condiments with small portions of the quality meats I can find. Ideally I would also include organ meats. Not quite there yet. No added alcohol (some fermented foods do have some from the fermentation process) or sugar if possible. Filtered water to remove Chlorine and Fluoride. Added a small amount of mineral salt to replace lost minerals.
No antimicrobial cleaning products little to no products that are aerosols or contain preservatives all of which kill off good microbes in your gut. I am also trying to reduce exposure to plastics. When possible I buy food in glass. Most meats are wrapped in plastic here. I try to remove and wrap in natural wax paper and or store in glass. Some of my habits I am trying to change may sound extreme but I have been exposed to so many toxins throughout my life I am just trying to lighten the load where I can.
I am noticing positive changes to my health.6 -
Hi Gals,
Lisa – Thank you! I knew you would have done all the research! Of course, Walmart is out of stock right now…but I will put it on the watch list.
I was thinking about whining about the heat, and then thought about Pip, it is 70F(21C) here at 7:30am but Pip is at 77F (25C) so I have nothing to whine about I better just be grateful. High today for me is 104 (40C) and Pip is 107 (41C) I think Debbie is close to my temps, but I am less sure what town to look up. And Tina the other California Gal is at the far southern part of the state and most of it is cooler this week, but I’m not sure of her location either.
I have plenty of embroidery work to do today, so tucked inside with a fan.
I am not sure how far the news has traveled but Patelco Credit Union was hit by a Ransome ware attack ( a computer based attack) and currently almost all banking is shut down. It is where I bank exclusively. So my access to cash, bill pay, atm and credit card is all very limited. All electronic payments in or out are stopped. This is a real bummer. It shouldn’t last more than a few days (I hope!) but it is making me consider diversifying my banking after this is cleared up.

@Kim. The shrimp were really Prawn and huge. When I found them, I first thought they were small lobster tails! The shells just practically fell off. Not as messy as you might think!
No food porn today. Ate at Wendy’s (baked potato with sour cream and chive with 4 chicken nuggets) Snack was cantaloupe, 1 cup with mixed nuts. Supper was celery with organic peanut butter.
Therapy went well yesterday. She says I should become a psychiatrist because of all the research I do. LOL. I send her info I find that I think she might like and she says what I send her she really likes and is useful to her. I told her I feel like we are colleagues rather than patient/doctor. She laughed and said sometimes it does! LOL. I really like this lady. She helps me and I help her. Works for me. Ps. I have too much anxiety to try to be a therapist. I would take on the other’s problems or get angry with them for whining. LOL. My tolerance is kinda low. I believe that instead of complaining, look for a solution. Or don’t tell me what’s wrong without giving me a potential solution. If someone complains to me, I tend to ask them what would they do to fix it. Usually stops them in their tracks! 😁 I use it on grumpy campers and works every time! LOL

We had a few windows with broken seals. We had a bird hit and shatter a window so we had a guy come to replace the glass. He told us they can replace the glass and the gas in the leaking double pane windows. We had him fix all of ours for MUCH less than replacing our windows would have been. He also recommended we not replace our windows. He said we wouldn’t recoup the cost in energy savings in our lifetime.
