AUGUST 2024 Monthly Running Challenge

Hi everyone!
My training plan is pretty much alternating easy/hard runs. Today was an easy day, which could have been a rest day except I ran 12.4km. Tomorrow will also be an easy day . The run was really nice and relaxing.
I have calculated how much I am planning to run for the rest of the month and am hoping to get to the 200 mile mark for the first time .
196.5/270km for August.5 -
Aug total: 74.1/113 miles
YTD: 635.6/1200 miles
8/3: 8.1 miles
8/4: 2.8 miles

8/17: 9.1 miles
8/20: 6.6 miles
8/21: 7.1 miles
The conditions were worse today than yesterday but the run felt easier. I think my legs were more tired from Pilates on the 19th than I realized. Those workouts are sneaky. After a few weeks I don’t tend to get as sore but that doesn’t mean the muscles aren’t tired.5 -
@tarun_yadavA Oooo, biryani is so tasty! Good choice for a birthday dinner. You don’t often meet a kid who doesn’t care for cake!4
-
@kgirlhart Great run in the heat. I hope you were able to get out earlier today. Bless your sister's heart. I've had that happen to me. It takes a lot to hold it together. I hope her kids were better today.
Good luck with your tooth implant @ContraryMaryMary . I hope you recover quickly.
Nice running @tarun_yadavA . Love the pictures of your son. That sticky toffy pudding looks delicious!
@Mari33a Great job getting out in the rain for the run. I hope you are able to find some calm times to run the rest of the week and you don't get any flooding or wind damage.
Yeah @yirara .
Great running @Laurz9191 .
@martaindale Nice running.

45.15/60.00 goal
I got up about an hour earlier and went to the gym. Had a good workout on the arms and legs.
From there, I went to the tennis courts and played tennis with my more social group for almost 2 hours. My first partner and I won 7-5. My second partner and I lost 3-6. It was fun and perfect weather at 61°F (16.1°C), partly cloudy, and a slight breeze.
After I got home, I did a quick walk on the driveway.
I rested, ate a light lunch, and then went out and used the DR to mow/bush hog more of the hill for almost 1.5 hours.
That was a total of 4h6m57s of activity for the day and I burned 1,169 calories. I'm a little bit tired tonight.

I got out for my run at 5:50 this morning. It was only 79°F and it almost felt cool after the heat of the last few mornings. I have never really been a morning person, but I definitely enjoy running at dawn over running in the heat. I ran 6 miles. It was an uneventful run, but the moon was still really bright and pretty.

August update:
153km so far.
Little pinky toe is doing great. Advil is a blessing
Aiming to do 200km for the month.7 -
Good morning everyone!
Went on an 11.2km run this morning. It was nice and refreshing.
207.8/270km for August!
@quilteryoyo That was a super active day yesterday!

This month has totally fallen apart with the running. Usual excuses.
I will be back here in September with things in order.

Hello everyone!
Got in 5.3 at 09'50.
Crossed 1300 for the year. (146.2 for month)6 -
10:00 WU/CD, 8x :20 fast, :45 recovery. This was the first speed workout for this training block. It was harder than I expected, probably because it was 81F. But the most of the intervals touched 5:40/mi pace, so could have been worse I suppose.
I stepped on the scale after the run, and I am up almost 15lbs from when I took my break!! 😢😭

Good morning everyone (or afternoon as the case may be). I ran 5 miles this morning. It was a nice 54F at 5:00 am. It’s felt like Fall here all week.
Hope all goes well with your implant @ContraryMaryMary. It’s such a long process from beginning to end.
Love the birthday pictures @tarun_yadavA! He’s a cutie!
@kgirlhart – I’ve been loving seeing the moon in the mornings also. So lovely.
@Scott6255 – How does the weight come on so quickly but goes away so slowly? Now that you are back to running I’m sure if you make a few adjustments to your diet, you will be back at your preferred weight soon.

Another windy run but not too bad. I was nervous about this run because of the distance but it went fine. After 1 mile warm up jog I had 3 sets of 8 minutes fast 4 easy & then .5 mile easy. I was able to keep on target so all good. Tomorrow is hill repeats which is my usual terrain so normal run but will try to go faster.5 -
OMG.. I am at 99.99 miles out of 100 goal. I did not notice until I added the # in today. 😳😳😳
@chris_in_cal glad you checked in. You are being proactive and hopefully this will be resolved and annual checks will be good enough.
We have been broiling this week in Tx but supposed to get relief tomorrow altho the morning lows will only be a few degs below 80. sigh. Yesterday it topped at 108 in the afternoon and I could not even make myself go outside after work. I did take a day off running and get a good night's sleep resulting in a nice run this morning where I had energy and was able to do a better pace.
I saw an Armadillo early on before the sun was predawn and it was crossing the road of course. Safely thank goodness. More skunks and Armadillo's out this year than usual. Then I made a CLASSIC mistake. I mean I was really clipping along at a good pace and shitola my left shoelace came undone. Normally I just stop and fix but I did not want to mess up the clock so I paused and then tied it. My mistake? I only tied one. I should know better but afterwards it felt like I was uneven - one tight and one loose. 😣😣🤷♀️ Golden rule of running. If you stop to retie one, always retie BOTH. 🙃

I did an interval run today. The plan called for 1.5 miles warm-up, then 4 times running 100 meters at 5k pace with 100 meters recovery, then 5 times running 400 meters at race pace then 400 meters recovery with a half mile cool down. I loaded the workout on my watch and set out. I hadn't gone too far when I realized that I had started the wrong workout on my watch. Luckily I had only gone a quarter of a mile so I stopped and started over. I felt like it went well, but I ran faster than Hal said I should. And when I got home I realized that I had entered 400 meters instead of 100 on the first set of interval. But all in all I think it was a good run.
@SummerSkier I always have to tie both shoes if I tie one. 😆

At the current rate of runs per week, I estimate I will be 1 long run short of my target, so I am bringing that one forward from Sunday to Saturday so I can get it into this month… I must be catching the crazy!
I purchased some bone conduction headphones (thanks for the tip, @kgirlhart!) and it’s been interesting! My ‘natural’ cadence without music is about 172 (stride 0.86m), but I can get to 184 (stride 0.81m) for a song or two without a change in HR. Downloaded a metronome to see if that’s also worth a try.
@chris_in_cal I miss seeing you on my Garmin newsfeed - I am sending you good vibes.
I do love reading everyone’s updates, although I don’t think to put responses in when I post (because I type it out on a note beforehand), but it’s a great community and I am happy to be part of it, so hugs to you all!4 -
Hi everyone!
I had a really hard run today. I was supposed to run 16km at marathon race pace. After my warm up, the first 7km went well, were on target, and felt easy. Then after slowing down for an uphill segment and to navigate traffic, I was confronted with a really strong headwind after my turnaround point that really seemed to push me backwards. I still tried to finish the 10 miles out as quickly as I could, but my pace (and my spirit) suffered quite a bit. However, I am very proud that I got the workout in, as I know not every run is going to come easy or go according to my plan. I ran 22.7km.
In other news, I am now at 230.4km/270 for the month and on track for breaking 300km.8 -

Urgh, this tooth implant is way more brutal than expected. No running today, not sure about tomorrow either. I had to have a small bone graft and so my upper lip is swollen hugely. My husband has taken to calling me ‘fat lip’, my youngest tells me I look like the grinch, just less green, and my best friend describes it as “the worst lip filler job she’s ever seen”. Charming, all three of them.
Basically I can’t be seen. But, with six stitches I have to be gentle on myself for a few days. Running can wait. Soft food diet is boring - how much macaroni and custard can you eat?8 -
@WarmJellyfish I'm glad that your toe is doing better. Great running.
@emptydog See you in Sept. You've got this.
You're doing great @yirara . Don't push yourself too hard to get in a HM distance tomorrow. Taking walk breaks will help you go further, if you want to do that. I know some people really dislike the run/walk/run method.
Have a great, safe trip @Teresa502 . I'm looking forward to hearing all about it.
That's way too hot @SummerSkier ! Great running. I agree about the shoe laces. You do always feel a bit lop sided if you only retie one. I would probably round up and say it was 100 miles or go out and run 10 feet to bet the other 0.01 mile in. But, there is always tomorrow.
Great running @kgirlhart .
Thanks @tarun_yadavA . Great consistent running. Fantastic mileage for the month. As for jury duty, I won't know anything else until I go in for "orientation" on the 3rd of Sept.I must be catching the crazy!
@Laurz9191 That sounds like a really tough run! You did great! You're pace probably would have been faster than planned had you not had the wind in your face. There should be some sort of conversion for that.
That sounds pretty awful @ContraryMaryMary ! Hang in there and I hope you heal quickly.

Today was almost a repeat of Wednesday. I got up early and went to the gym. I did a fairly easy workout, mostly core and arms.
I drove over to the tennis center and got ready to play singles with a friend. She hasn't played since Dec because of knee pain and having a partial knee replacement. She really just wanted to see if she could play without pain. She did good, but was afraid to run much. She was doing better by the time we finished. I won 6-1, 6-2. It was fun. We did do a bit more talking than normal as we hadn't seen each other in a while either.
After I got home, I did a treadmill walk. I didn't want to walk fast on the driveway because my right knee was hurting when I was walking down the hill at the gym. It didn't bother me playing tennis, but I didn't want to take chances.
I rested and ate lunch and then went out and bush hogged on the hill for over an hour.
I had 3h47m42s of activity today. I burned a total of 1,111 calories.5 -

The plan called for a 3 mile base run today. I ran 6.25 miles at a pretty slow pace. I have pretty much decided to ditch the plan, but I am going to try to incorporate some speed work. So I guess I am modifying the plan. It was 84° feels like 86° and was a bit of a struggle at times. I did see another runner out though. And I saw my nephew's fiance. She actually saw me first and called out to me and waved as she drove by. So it wasn't a bad run, just a hot run.
Sorry that you had a sucky run @laurz9191. Hopefully the next one will be better.
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you feel better soon. Dental work is no fun.
@quilteryoyo You might just be the most active person I know! You are such an inspiration. I hope your knee feels better tomorrow.

Hi everyone!
I went on an easy recovery run this morning 4.4km. It went just fine . I am planning on doing my long run this week either tomorrow or Monday depending on how I feel tomorrow (and how early I can get myself out of bed).
Have a good weekend everyone!

I feel for you, @ContraryMaryMary - I had 6 implants done back in 2016: best thing I ever did but felt like I’d been kicked in the face by a donkey. I ate LOTS of scrambled egg! Weirdly, I couldn’t eat lettuce for ages, something about how you have to chew it meant it was too tricky (it was my front teeth plus four to one side). However, once healed, the joy of that first bite into an apple still gives me a moment of thankfulness!7 -

I decided to bring forward my Sunday long run to today as I’ll be babysitting tomorrow with no opportunity to run: it was raining, and showing no signs of stopping, so whilst hubby thinks I’m nuts I went out anyway.
Trialled a new playlist (see spoiler for screenshot of cadence and the playlist), which gave me a mixture of tempos that kept me interested/challenged, and it felt really good - and I also got a PB for my 5k, knocking 2m 10s off my previous best. Blimey!
