@Mari33a I'm glad your doctor gave you the okay to continue running. If you get inserts, I hope they help.
@martaindale That sounds like a great plan to me. I think the run/walk will definitely let you do more miles with less fatigue. I tried the Garmin Jeff Galloway HM plan last year. I, too, found the weekday workouts too short, so always added to them. You may want to do his glider workouts as part of a longer session, as they help you to transition from running to walking and back to running smoothly. I look forward to seeing how you like the plan you have come up with.
Nice running @kgirlhart .4 -
Well, was planning on doing a little test run this evening but then on the commute to work this morning, just as I was coughing into my arm sleeve, I coughed hard enough to feel something pop in my back
I'm hoping its just soft tissue and not a rib because it hurt like a ^!%%*$#^. Sigh, so much for going back into the waters....when will this end....

@martaindale – I enjoyed reading all the thoughtfulness that you put into deciding on a sustainable running plan.
@Mari33a – Sorry the doctor didn’t have more encouraging news.
Ouch @WarmJellyfish. I hope it’s nothing serious.
Thanks for setting up March @AlphaHowls!5 -
@martaindale I think your plan sounds reasonable as you are basing it on past experience and the amount of days you would prefer to be out running. At the end of the day, almost every run is done for training, so if the training is not fun or isn’t a good match, you might eventually resent it. It sounds like you want to avoid that and also get some positive racing results.
@quilteryoyo You are doing great with your training and finding time!
@WarmJellyfish So sorry to hear about having to delay your test run! I hope everything is ok!3 -
Today I wanted to get some weight lifting and strides in, so I did a treadmill run. I did a 30 minute warm up, then 15x 1 minute strides with 1 minute recovery. I only truly pushed the pace for the last one.
Tomorrow I have a really hard run planned and I am hoping my legs will be fresh enough to be up to the task. I felt really good today, but I did have a wonderfully restful non-running rest day yesterday. I have some long segments at marathon race pace planned. I don’t usually do 2 challenging days in a row, but it is impossible to schedule everything in my life around my marathon training plan (which is what it feels like I’ve been trying to do).
314.5/301km for February.7 -
01.02 3.2km 25min 7:52/km - 10x 20/40s intervals
03.02 3.2km 25min 7:46/km - 15min faster

20.02 3.0km 24min 8:06/km

23.02 3.2km 25min 7:49/km - 10x 20s fast
25.02 3.3km 25min 7:29/km - tempo
27.02 4.0km 32min 7:55/km - slow

I don't get it: one day running goes so well, the next it's rubbish. Today was rubbish.9 -

Hahaha! Not unwillingness at all. I'm running less than I have in the past at this point in a training block. My reservation is more about hanging all my hopes for fitness improvement on one huge long run and then doing 2-3 very short runs during the week. First, I don't want to dedicate the time to a huge long run every weekend. Second, I like running multiple days during the week and that should allow me to level the load a little better. Last, I am hopeful that implementing a run walk strategy will help with the fatigue and allow me to continue running with the same frequency. Since run walk is a big change, I'm going to do that first, trying to keep everything else relatively steady so I can see what effect it has. Depending on how it goes I can make additional changes from there.
Tldr: Alter one variable at a time!6 -
... it is impossible to schedule everything in my life around my marathon training plan (which is what it feels like I’ve been trying to do).
I hear you! This was my biggest struggle with marathon training and probably my largest hurdle to doing it again. Not saying never, but it consumed all of my time and that was hard.
You're doing great managing your training. You seem to rarely skip things and that is a testament to your commitment!4 -

Ok I'm pretty sure I broke a rib. Every time I have to cough I can feel a clicking and it's painful as heck. I've broken my ribs before. Going to the doc later. The sucky thing with ribs is not a whole lot can be done.
Dang, have to amend this year's race plans, thank goodness I haven't paid for a bunch yet
@Teresa502 @Laurz9191 Thanks

@martaindale Loved reading ur plan. It reminded me of years back when there were a lot of technical runners here. I used to be mesmerised by all the running jargon
@WarmJellyfish Can't believe ur having such a bad time aftercare fantastic trip you had6 -
Oh no @WarmJellyfish ! I hope it isn't anything serious. Well, just saw that you think you broke a rib. So sorry. I hope you heal quickly.
Glad you managed to beat the rain this morning @Teresa502 !
Thanks @Laurz9191 . Sounds like you had a great run today. I hope tomorrow's goes well. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just run and not worry about having to schedule around anything else?
Sorry you had a tough run @yirara ! At least you know they aren't all bad!
Congratulations @John772016 .
Beautiful picture @Emilienewme !
You're doing great @Mari33a .

76.90/80 miles goal
Posting 2 days. I just didn't have time to get on here last night.
Yesterday, I went to the gym in the morning - did bench press and other arm/core exercises. My bench press max was 55 # x 3 reps. I've done better than that lately, but I just couldn't get anymore for some reason. I did do more of the assisted pull ups at the same weight, so parts of me were stronger and parts, not so much. I did treadmill walks before and after the weight lifting, totaling 1.10 miles.
After I got home, I went out for a driveway wun. I wasn't sure how it would go, but didn't feel too bad. The running portion Avg pace was 13:10 min/mile. Splits were 13:49, 13:12, and 10:51.
Today, I had another gym session - trying to make up for the days I didn't make it in last week due to the weather. Again, I did treadmill walks before and after the workout, totaling 1.75 miles. The workout today was legs and dead lift...maxed at 95 # x 10 reps.
I went into work after the gym and then walked another 1.75 miles on the treadmill after I got home.

I tried to take it a bit easier today. Still using the 3 min/30 sec intervals. Even though the effort felt less, my pace was pretty similar. I find it much easier to slip into a faster pace with the intermittent walk breaks. Also my Garmin downgraded me from unproductive to strained.Who knows what this thing wants.

Oh no @WarmJellyfish, that’s the worst luck.
@martaindale your focus and dedication is fantastic.
I had to get up at silly o’clock this morning to go for an MRI on my lower back. Didn’t know it was possible to make appointments for 6:45 in the morning. I did not choose that time. It was the only time they had available and since I am seeing the sports doctors next week and had to have the MRI done beforehand I had to take whatever time they had
I was all done and out of there by 7:30 and since I was near Takapuna, a beach-side suburb which is very scenic and flat, I decided to have my run there. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I’m now shattered though and in desperate need of a nap.7 -

Hello everyone!
So I got to 103 miles (from first twenty days of the month!).
Just quickly caught up on messages...
@quilteryoyo thank you for the sweet DM to check up on me 💜
@chris_in_cal yes. I am super grumpy. Burning half the calories, so effectively 'dieting'.
@martaindale congrats on the Vegas half!
@Laurz9191 well done on that 20miler! 🙌🏽
PS: rowing.
And I get a sore ar$e from the bike and the rower. Joy.

Well, I got 82.1km for the month so less than planned - thwarted by my mole removal which cost me three runs but helped by having a half marathon.
Never did any more skipping and was hopeless with yoga 🙄. But I did manage Pilates twice a week, so another win. Onwards!5 -

@martaindale Glad the wunning seems to be working for you. LOL about Garmin. No one knows. It's one of life's biggest mysteries.
@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like a lovely run, even though it wasn't what you would have chosen. I, too, strongly dislike those really early morning appointments.
@tarun_yadavA Sorry about those callouses and blisters. I know that has to hurt. You are doing great to keep at it. I hope you'll be back to running soon.

I rounded out the month with a 3 mile run this morning. Fell short of my 90 mile goal. Spending 4 days and nights with my dad in the hospital threw me off. Maybe next month! Congratulations to everyone making and even trying to make it!
@Laurz9191 Managing marathon training and one’s life is definitely a balancing act. You are doing fabulous at it!
Yikes @WarmJellyfish I hope the rib heals quickly.
Beautiful photo @Emilienewme. I hope you enjoyed your time in London.
Goodness I’ve never seen “strained” from Garmin @martaindale! I always get “maintaining.”
Hope the MRI is helpful @ContraryMaryMary. Nice work getting a run in afterwards and taking advantage of being in a scenic place.
Oh @tarun_yadavA – I’ve missed your posts! Sorry about the blisters and soreness but you made me laugh.

Ran 139.46 miles so far this month. Supposed to do a 15K today, we'll see if that happens.2

Hi everyone!
@WarmJellyfish I am sorry to hear about your ribs! Sounds painful.
@tarun_yadavA Looks painful. Just remember, the skin will grow back stronger.
I must admit I had some chaffing issues myself today.
My workout went so well this morning. It was kind of a magical run. The weather was dark and there were puddles of water and mud everywhere, but it was cold and windless, so that was a help. While I was running my 3x marathon pace 3 mile intervals, they felt really good. Except for the last one. I was planning on doing small loops, and then returning to the car for water and gels, but I ended up doing a long out and back with just a gel, so by my last interval, I had already run 12+ miles and I was so thirsty. I got back to the car, ate half of an energy bar and inhaled a whole liter of water! before doing my cool down. The coolest part - after a minute into the cool down my stomach had zero problems dealing with all that liquid at once. I actually felt so much better because I wasn’t dehydrated any more. So today marathon training went well! As I have learned though, that does not mean Garmin will have anything nice to say about it.
I have topped my record for my most monthly miles in the shortest month of a year by 0.7km (from August last year). I am proud about that.
338/301km for February!
