"Tell us about yourself. What are your short-term and long-term goals? State your name, starting weight, and describe your weight-loss method (calorie counting, low-carb, vegan, keto, weight-watchers, etc.)"
I’m a man, 68 years old, widower, dealing with a bad broken hip repair (2017), as well as MS (diagnosed in 2018), so use a rollator for balance, stability and strength. Like many folks I’ve battled with being overweight since childhood. I got my weight under control in my 20s through early 40s, though I was still overweight.
When my partner passed in 2001, I no longer gave a damn about myself. This past June 1st, 2024, I looked in the mirror and was shocked by what I saw, and moreso when I stepped on the scale, and it registered 286.2 pounds and I’m only 5’7” (I used to be 5'10" but osteoporosis has shrunk me, which hasn't pleased me one bit)
.As of May 24th, 2025 I’m down to 211.2 lbs (that is 70+ pounds) by cutting out 95% or so junk food, processed food, sugar (except for in my morning coffee!) and white flour. I'm eating as "clean" and fresh as I can on an SS/SSI budget (lots of canned tuna, salmon and great northern beans for protein). I‘m also doing 18:6 intermittent fasting every day, one 500-calorie day a week, and a 24 hour fast every 2 weeks.
Joined a few fitness groups on Fb.
I also joined the group TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and go to their Thursday Online Men's Group on ZOOM for weekly support and accountability.
Bought myself a stationary bike, rower, weight bench, dumbbells and resistance bands, to workout at home. Being in the second half of my life, I’ve woken up finally to the fact of wanting to get as healthy as I’m able. My short-term goal would be to have a “Dad Bod” around 180 lbs… my long-term goal is to be a lean 160 lbs.

This is amazing, I’m truly inspired after reading this. 160lbs is around my goal as well.

I give you much credit for having an extensive resistance routine, even (as you say) it can be irregular. I've lost 70 lbs since last June 1st, 2024 with a reduced-calorie intake and cutting out 95% of all processed foods, white flour and sugar. My exercise has been 2-1/2 hours of cardio (spinning) every day/7 days (warm up/regular pace/high pace and (for the past 6 months, HIIT). So far, I've not been able to get myself interested in doing a variety of resistance-weight training. (My laziness compels me to just stay on the bike for two long sessions of 1-1/2 hours in the morning, then later in the evening, another hour.) Starting this June 1st I'm determined to pick ONE resistance exercise (to start) and keep doing it, every day, until it becomes a habit, that'll come naturally!😏
Thanks for the posting… it's inspiring and helpful for this 68-year-old!

I just find my exercise bike so boring, but as I said I turn it up to the highest setting and do 60 rotations - this really kills my legs. I might do this a total of 5 times mixed in with everything else.
I find the variety of different activities a good incentive to keep going.

I now live in a Senior-Disabled Person apartment complex. It hadn't occurred to me before moving here, that a large (no pun intended) percentage of folks here would be folks dealing/not dealing (as the case may be) with their own obesity issues, along with many other health issues. This is NOT a nursing home, and folks aren't ancient/fragile/senile here… still, there is always a death here every 3-4 months, and I know that these "early" deaths were preventable because they were all noticeably obese/overweight, IMHO. So, at 68, living here has been a major "wake-up" call to get mental-physical-emotional well-being in order finally!!!

I lost 5 of th 7 lbs I gained because I’ve been very sick with another gallbladder attack. Haven’t eaten very much in the last 3 days. I feel much better now. 🙂2 -

Hi everybody, I am Monika. Cleaning my scales and replacing battery added 2+ lbs. Also looked closer at the flavored creamers that I have gotten kind of addicted to - 1 serving is one tablespoon and I've been using more than that for sure. Been struggling with stress eating, up to 248 lbs. I'm so beat when I get home from work at 8 pm every night it is hard to eat the right and satisfying thing with an eye on the clock to get enough sleep. Unpaid summer break is coming up, and I am scrambling to make lasting changes because last year's break tanked me financially.

Gallbladder attacks suuuuuuck! I can definitely emphasis with you there 😫

I lost the 2lbs I put on last week, so I'm back at 310lbs, and back on track to be 299 or less by July 4th 💪

Thank you, Lisa for the warm welcome! Looking forward to supporting everyone on their wellness journey!!! As I enter my second year of this "trek UP Mount Health," you DO realize - as everyone says! - you're not on a diet, you're on an adventure to self-discovery (mentally/emotionally/physically)!

Never fails that when I change the batteries on my scale come January 1st, my weight goes UP a few lbs (and NOT because of the holiday eating, necessarily)! LOL Yeah, I was also addicted to all the different specialty creamers - during the holidays especially I had ALL the different flavors in either liquid or dry form. I have cut back drastically - it saves money, whadaya know! - to having just French Vanilla in the tiny, individual servings, so I can better measure the amount (just 3 in my morning mug of coffee).
Last November I found a large Frigidaire chest freezer on sale through Walmart ($150 including delivery!) which I have in my bedroom of my small 1B apartment (it's my functional end-table). It's great as I now can make a large batch of so many different cheap, healthy recipes, and freeze individual servings to be microwaved later. What an investment in money, time and my health. Just another reason to NOT have PROCESSED junk food in the cabinets or fridge. Here's a link that'll hopefully inspire you???

Tuesday to Tuesday weigh in is 268 meaning I lost 9lbs this week.
Delighted😊6 -
Thanks for your tips, Baodell17724. I am 65 and feel worn out by the daily rat race. I would like to retire and finally take care of myself if I could afford it. I will look into your recipe site, that might help.

That's amazing! Well done 👏

9 pounds? That's truly amazing! Are you taking a diuretic to pass more water? I ask, because I take one every day because my legs will always retain water (and I MUST get rid of it), because of severe Edema two years ago which led to two different hospitalizations.

I actually gained a couple of lbs this week, making my May total only -3. It’s my first month on Mounjaro and seems really low to me, but my average glucose has dropped A LOT. 7-day average was 190, the day of my first shot and is 127 today. Waist measurement is down 2”. The scale only tells part of the story!

Yesterday I "experimented" with the new rower I've had set-up since November 1, but never got on! (I bought a special one that has a seat 20" off the floor, since with my MS/bad hip repair/weight (at that time, 229 lbs) I knew there was no way I'd ever down on a regular rower… and also get off and back up!😕 I'm glad I waited so long! Safety first! First, I now weigh less, 208 pounds, so it's easy maneuvering the fat remaining. It's not easy getting onto the machine with a seat which shifts back and forth (there really should be a temporary locking mechanism)! Also, since it is higher off the ground, my bad hip makes it difficult putting my leg over the bar. Also, a (still) big rear end, means it takes time to position yourself correctly… because your legs are horizontal to the floor, 20" below, and in stirrups, you now need to keep your balance (like first riding a bicycle)!😐️ Finally, the (not so) funny thing that happened, was after about 15 minutes on the rower, I went to get off… and found I couldn't get my feet out of the stirrups, because I had tightened the straps too much! And my fat thighs were keeping me from bending my knees so I'd get close enough to undo them with my hands! (Again, a temporary locking mechanism would have been a huge help here.) I spend a whole additional 10 minutes sweating, swearing, and thinking "My cleaning lady is gonna find my cold, dead body locked in this darn contraption!😲" Eventually I did get one foot free, so the other was a cinch! Anyways, a perfect example that you definitely learn from your mistakes!🤔
Oh, so I plan to do a combination of 30 minutes walking the halls inside my building - there are windows so I get to see the outside at least. and carpeted floor makes my "MS drop foot" and stumbling less likely. The other part of the 30 minutes will be getting used to rowing. (I had been doing 2 hours of spinning (bicycle) for the past 6 months every day… but it's gonna take quite a while to get to that point with the rower, as there is much more resistance and it'll be a much harder workout!😓
3 -
You could write a review for that rower and let the company know to improve the safety.

Thanks for reminding me to do that!🤔

I weighed in at 306lbs this week, so that's 4lbs down from last week. Ooooh, those 200's are getting so close I can almost taste them, haha

Today is weigh in day and I am scared to step on the scale.
This has been one of the hardest weeks of my life. I got a call that my cousin I was raised with took her own life at the start of the week. I’ve been in utter shock and disbelief for days.Like a lot of people in these dark times, I have turned to food for comfort. I know I have been lacking on exercise this week and not making the healthiest decisions. I am just so so sad. Why would she do that to herself?
How do you cope with the loss of someone and maintain your fitness goals? The last thing I want to do right now is cry into a salad and run for 30 minutes. I just know stepping on the scale the number will be higher this week and I just can’t take any more sadness right now.

Sometimes life is bigger than weight loss. Accept it. So sorry for your loss. So sorry for your pain. Deal with that first. Take a "diet " break.
If you're eating to take your mind off it, find something else to distract yourself. I knit and crochet. What project can you start?
4 -
No, I’m on no medication whatsoever, I've only lost 2lbs in my second week.
But I’m delighted that I’ve lost 14lbs - 1 stone from my heaviest weight - a major milestone in my mind.
