I went back 3 pages. I hope everyone is well.
Debbie: My friend outside of San Francisco put in a/c just last year. Because of the hotter summers. They removed grass awhile back and have plants/shrubs in the front yard.
Annie: We had no A/C growing up We had a screened in porch and on hot nights we were told to sleep on the porch. My parents loved the beachโฆwe spent many hot days on the beach with pretty bad sunburns. I would not be surprised if I came down with skin cancer. My mother tans wonderfully and still sits out most days. She really can not relate that I do not do this. Today she told me by FaceTime that my hair was really getting lighter for the summer. I almost let the remark go..it would have been betterโฆI did tell her it was the hair dye washing out and reminded her my hair is gray.
Lisa..Funny the hairdresser was timid about cutting your hair. Maybe she is new at hair dressing. I have had 3 nail techs be very very slowโฆlike over an hour to do my nailsโฆeven though I had given up and said no color. So over an hour for no color. I try to stay supportiveโฆ. but I guess I should find somebody I go to on a regular basis every other month.
Allie: Kyle is not the first Dad to not be into little children. My Dad did little with us one on one. He was good about taking us swimming, sledding, ice skatingโฆthings he could watch us do and stand back. He was a teacher and I think just doing his job was all he could manage. He never even watched tv with us.
I crawled under the house once and it got very tight under the house. I tell myself I would not do it againโฆbut I suppose I would if I thought there was a leak or something. I have a little fear of bridges. I am afraid I can't drive fast enough on them to keep up with traffic. I love looking at bridges.
I drove to see a friend in NYC one year and I think it was the George Washington Bridge I went over and was in NJ but I took an exit ramp and ended up on a service roadโฆin the darkโฆunderneath the bridgeโฆwhere the cement postings were that were in the ground. I was very very scared. There were no other cars.
I have my granddog for 5 nights. He is a gentleman dog. Very handsome and well behaved. It so hot to be taking the 2 dogs out. I am waiting for it to cool off. They are bored, but it is so hot.
My sod is doing well. I hope to post a picture of it in the next few days! I hope it is rooting. But even under shade and with this heat..it is holding up well..been about 14 days.
I am still considering doing this spontaneous cruise. I did one other in the 80s. And I have been to Ireland. But all else has been short 3 night stays in the United States.
My right knee is starting to ache.

Rosemarie from GA

Iโve been reading along, someone mentioned my food budget and how low it is. I thought I would share some of what I do as probably each of us likes to keep our budget under control. First, I am far more attentive to this than most would be. I am a bit over the top on this, but it allows me to have more spending money.
My first goal is no wasteโฆ. Period. So I have recipes I can use all sorts of bits and bobs in. From fried rice, quiche, chili, & soup. And I put the little bits in the freezer for those recipes. Second is scratch cooking. I ran the numbers and with any one of 3 bread recipes I can make a loaf of bread for under $2 each so on Sunday I make bread โ 2 loaves last my housemate and I for sandwiches and toast for the week. Everything that can be bought pre-made/pre cut/ pre grated has math done prior to buying. And if it is cheaper to make/cut/grate my own I do. I watch ads, I have the aps on my phone for the local shops and know in each one where the discount shelves are. I will change up my weekly food plan based on ads or discounts. I rarely impulse buy, and I buy in person as in the stores near me there are often manager deals that are not available online. That will probably change with my vision challenges. The other biggie is I garden, my friends garden, so there is a lot of sharing trading going on. Today I got figs from one gal, cucumbers, zucchini and lettuce from another, so I shared a cucumber with the fig gal, and I had tomatoes so I traded tomatoes and a zucchini for a bag of flour with another. And that underground trading will go on all year. If I end up with an overflow of something I figure out how to freeze, dry or can it. My freezer has berries and pomegranate juice in it from my yard. And I have jam, pickles, and canned fruit in the pantry. I am also pretty well read on the โbuy byโ, โ best byโ, and โsell byโ dates on food. With a few exceptions (dairy, fish, and baby formula) those dates are heavily influenced by the marketing department of the manufacturer. Not by health or flavor. If marketing can get you to throw it out and re-buy that is a win for the bottom line.
Pip โ Iam so impressed that you are keeping up the activity โ Iโd be so sad I might not get out and do it without Yogi.
My home doesnโt have AC, and it would be a big deal to get it as it would need an upgrade of the power to handle it. Big trees, fans and being careful of windows and shades all help when the heat moves in.
Bridges, I am happy to drive on or walk on bridges. I think they are such an architectural marvel and so I enjoy them from whatever vantage point I can.
I did an hour of gardening today, and will be going on my walk soon. I really need to get my walking distance up. As It is 1.25 miles each way to the market, and if it is going to be months or longer until I can drive I do need to be able to get my own food.

Hi everyone,
I did my Step Aerobics without pain, but I am out of shape. Rose was in the way when I did push-ups and sit-ups. Then she thought my exercise mat was hers. Now she is on her back, sleeping. Rose was on her back, lying in the sun, too, then she got up to come and check on me.
Debbie, it sounds like you can talk to your ex-husband more than you can to your DH. I am curious, is your MIL Japanese?
Allie, remind Miles that he needs to be gentle, cause you are recovering from surgery.
Michelle, you are a good wife to Vince. You always look out for him.
Pip, I know both you and Kirby are missing Yogi. Yogi was a perfect dog. I hope his passing doesn't stop you from having more dogs in your life. You are so good at training. Rose ended up training me.
Kim, how are you doing?
Rosemarie, go on a fabulous cruise to Greece or wherever you'd like to go, because you onlyย have one life to live.
Well, I need a shower, because I got pretty sweaty. You all have a fantastic night.

dh was never hands on with our son until he was a teen and then it was just to take him to the movies. I guess because his dad never did anything with him(his dad was old when he was born. I was the one that did everything with my son. Taught him to ride a bike, play soccer, took him to the park, taught him to swim, etc.
My dad was very hands on- only had three daughters but taught us how to fish, shoot a gun, etc
I also spent a lot of time doing chores like planting and picking veggies/berries.
My dad was 24 when I was born. Dh's dad was I think 40 or a bit older when he was born.
I have a very close relationship with my son. Dh doesn't have that with him but doesn't understand why.5 -
At the moment I am doing my back/hip/arm/foot/knee exercises when I wake up. It usually lasts around 25 mins, but I just do what feels right. I usually wake up achey, so I need it. My stiff back is improving. The advantage is, I can start in bed, and gradually work my way up, by kidding myself I am only doing 'a few stretches'. No investment in a major session. The momentum carries me on, and, before I know it, I have done a comprehensive workout! I usually continue with a bit more in the kitchen, but I am inclined to 'forget' the counter push ups. ๐ I also do 'heel drops' on the hard floor.
It's all better than nothing. The best exercise, like the best 'diet' is the one you can keep doing, and enjoy. I may go out today to buy Scotch Eggs, and seeded sourdough, so I will get a bit of walking in. John is picking up both girls from school, so DDIL can collect her new bike. I have Zoom. I'm going to make a lamb, spinach, and lentil curry, with raita, because we have a cool break in the hot weather. It will return at the weekend.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Heather: I do the same first thing, starting in bed, with a variety of lower body physio, core strength, arm stretches, etc, Then a short walk around the house, and standing leg exercises they are a mixture of strength and flexibility. I finish with another walk around the house. From 15 - 45 minutes. I usually do a couple of short workouts during the day, using YouTube, and regular walks during ad breaks if Iโm watching TV. It all helps to stave if the ravages if time ๐ I was wonderingโฆ. Are you using your rowing machine these days?Itโs been pleasantly milder this week, because of cloud cover, but itโs still very hot in the sunny periods Some heavy showers so raincoats are advisable when walking outdoors. Such are the joys of a British Summer. Nothing pressing to do today but I will keep busy. I like to keep on top of the chores,

Awake early..I have fed the dogs and taken them out 2x. There is a meditation group online at 6:30. But then I would need to go back to sleep to have enough sleep to do book group at 1 pm.
Heather: I will have to look up scotch eggs! Lamb sounds delicious. I have been buying mostly fish..salmon,cat fish and shrimp. Sometimes flounder. I generally buy a lamb meal at the Greek restaurant. I am off chicken mostly. And I lived on chicken for years and years.
MO: My dog is always trying to climb on me. I will say space, space and sort of understands and will go and sit on top of the couch. He is 10 pounds. Other times, I put him in his crate where he can still watch me but settles down some.
Kim: Sounds like the walk to the market and back would be some exercise. I love having a destination when I walk. Will you pull a cart for the food? I remember having a cart when I lived in the city.
I just joined a FB group that is suppose to encourage short work outs. I have been to the Gym 20x this year. That is not even once a week. I am not sitting around. I am just busy with the cleaning and the outside of the house.

Hi!
Sorry trying to "do something" about weight. I am thankful to be healthy and capable even though i an heavier than i want to be. I have been reading along as I walk but can't type and walk at the same time. I have been self indulgent long enough. If I want to wear my favorite clothes again then actions must be taken. I wore my DH's T-shirt with my leggings to work today as my long shirts were in the laundry and my more pant like leggings were too. The funny thing is no one minds but meโฆ.I have logged every bite for three days. I have measured, cut, and adjusted. The past three days I have averaged around 1600 calories per day and earned average of 500 calories for exercise. I have walked 15K steps per day. In order to do this and work, I have walked an hour in the morning, take every opportunity to walk at work aiming to get close to 10K before I head home. After supper and clean up I walk to finish up the steps. This is usually around 45-60 minutes. I am hungry between 10am and 7pm. Trying to make better substitutions for items. Like Costco has a cilantro lime crema that is awesome. It is only 40 calories per 2T serving vs 150 calories for 2T of Ranch! May pick up some hummus as a dip too.
Flea- I too forget that there is a wide age range of our village. Thank you for sharing your story.
Cheryl and Rebecca- What wonderful and funny memories! Even if one was more recent ;), I wish our fire department has hot firemen, but โฆ..lets just say I hope they could carry me out of a building in an emergency. Not all of them, but it is more on the tepid side.
I hyperventilate in tight spaces especially if face is covered. Therefore tunnels have always been an issue, though I am getting better at breathing through short ones. Bridges don't seem to bother me. Eating healthier is always the goal. The problem is finding good for you food and having time to do that. Kim seems to have figured that out. I think that in the US medicine is too controlled by pharmaceutical and insurance companies. I do value that advancements have been made in that field though. We have been in a heat wave since Saturday. Temps over 90F with heat indexes over 100F. Tuesday night it was still 91F at 915pm. We are now in for a rainy patch of rain for the next 5 days. Storms rolled in about 345 yesterday afternoon, then out again about 5pm. It feels chilly outside at 72 this morning :) I am not complaining about the heat as it is much better than the cold to me especially if there is shade and a breeze.
I need to get walking. The nice thing is that I only ate half of what I packed yesterday, so not much to pack today for snacks or lunch. Laundry done. Cali and Tory are playing outside.
Healing thoughts!
HUGS!!!!
Thank you all for being here!

Good morning my friends!
I have hired a driver to help me get across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It was dark and I was tired.
I need to check out that LazyFit app. This broken foot has me sitting too much.
It got up to 100 degrees here yesterday and the day before. I've been pushing my Dad to drink water. He likes to go sit outside even in the heat.
Your cancer stories are inspiring! So many survivors!
Machka those boys stuck in that cave! That was terrifying.
I'm up to 15 minutes on my bike, on day 16. I'm not sure about getting to thirty on the same device. I'm thinking about getting a rowing machine, but it doesn't really fit anywhere. Still, awkward space and me fit would beat not enough exercise. Eventually I will go back to a gym, but not with Dad.
I generally take Dad along in the waiting room. He's with me except for early morning and his class time. It does get old. I did get a sitter for the gynecologist!
Rita asthma and flooding on top of colon trouble! What a week!
Rebecca love your nudist adventures!
Flea and Lisa and Tina- I'm another one who doesn't like showering.
Pip and Kim hugs!
Mo Yay for step aerobics! My knee won't tolerate that. Maybe if I weighed less and had more strength.
Heather and Terri great job exercising! You rock!
May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

I made it out to Canhams. Pleased with self. I bought two chilli Scotch Eggs for lunch tomorrow, and some calves liver for tomorrow dinner. John's favourite. I also walked to Gail's to buy seeded sourdough. Hooray! It's ridiculously expensive, but ..... oh well.
I find leaving the house so difficult. So it's an achievement.

mo- I think we will always have a dog. Right now we still have the other two. He was saying that after they go we go without a pet so we can travel a bit. We used to take bike rides all the time but stopped because of having the dogs. After working the he going riding we started feeling guilty with having dogs at home. I am good with training so we will get another one at some point.

Hello, my chickens,
Contemplating a day off. Just getting through an entire day and not accomplishing anything. Not sure I know how to do that. And of course, that doesn't include laundry, which is already going. ๐๐งบ๐
I have found that I truly miss my Fitbit most in the middle of the night, when I wake up and don't know what time it is. I never needed an alarm to be able to get up on time, so I don't have a bedside clock.. I can't see Corey's clock without a lot of contortions and trying to get my eyes to focus. I don't know why I need to know in the middle of the night!
Tina/Flea - Yah, me too. Resist and resist getting in the shower, and then when I do, I want to stay in there for hours.
Heather - Perhaps if there was somewhere to walk TO, walking would be something I could get to love, but I have never lived in a city where I could. Ever. Grew up 20 miles from the nearest store, and never lived in a "walkable" city. There are few in the U.S., and in those that are walkable, like New York City, there are usually far too many people in them for me to be attracted to them.
Egg has decided she likes my backscratcher - both to be petted and as a toy.
There is still a lot of mud and tape work to be done in the back room. Did quite a bit yesterday, but lots more to do. Will have to change clothes to do it, as I'll ruin anything I have on - I can never remember not to wipe it off on my clothes, once I get going, I just forget. That reminds me, I need to see if I've got a "before" picture of that room. I should have got one of those while we were working on the small bath.
Happy Thursday, dear hearts,
Love,
Lisa in AR8 -
๐ป Kim, I am nearly as thrifty as you, but I learned no waste cooking from my mother. I abhor food waste which requires me good planning, smart cooking, and the willingness to eat something two days in a row to avoid spoilage. Most of us have heard "eat your _______, children are starving in ___________" and the saying has been criticized and laughed at for generations, yet it means to me to be grateful for having food because there are those who don't have enough. On several occasions I have found myself with food I didn't really like and I ate it anyway rather than throwing it out.
๐ Habits, routines, and rituals have been the basis of my life over the last couple of decades. I shower in the morning either before my long walk or after. I eat meals and snacks at planned times, get groceries at the same time every week, and do many other things at a set time or day of the week.
๐ฅ Pip, when Sasha died, I felt like I had left something behind at home when I walked without her. The grief of losing a beloved pet is painful like nothing else.
๐ฅ When my sister died in 1966, my parents bought plots at the cemetery to accommodate all four of us. I don't think any of us went back to the grave until my father died in 1988. The only time anyone went out there after that was to visit the office to make a prepaid burial plan and to bury my mother. Jake and I later gave the remaining plot to Jake's son when we moved out of state. On the other hand, when my grandfather died, my grandmother had a stone bench placed near the graves so she'd have a place to sit when she visited the cemetery. Those customs are so personal.
๐ฅ Carol, much love to you in your heat. It's not nearly that hot here, but when we bought our heating and cooling system, we signed up for a service plan that would put us at the top of list for service if we needed it. We haven't needed it but I am grateful for the system and would be miserable without it.
๐ Now it's time to empty the dishwasher, take a shower, and go for a walk first with the dogs and then alone.

Today I got down on the floor and did some of my old dumbbell/stretch/calisthenics workout. Yay! I only did ten reps with one pound weights so it was a tryout. But at least I started. My right shoulder is being sensitive, and my left foot is broken, so I skipped a few things. I ordered a book on dumbbells so we shall see what they recommend.
And I talked to my Dad about a stair climb challenge together. We will start that on Sunday when I have the logbook.
And he said okay to getting a rowing machine! Yay! It's going to look awkward but will be cool. I'm waiting for Amazon sale days to buy it.
So things are moving along! Yay!

Rita - thank you for sharing your lab results and stroke risk information. Does your doc have any recommendations for this? There sure are a lot of layers to these lipid tests. Mine just shows the basics. Total Cholesterol, HDL, Triglycerides, LDL, Chol/DHLC ratio and Non HDL Chol. I imagine of one of those values was out of whack, Dr. Lisa would order further.
Flea - and thanks to you for sharing your cancer story. You have great medical team support and fabulous outlook.
Annie - good job getting back on your bike and starting up with the dumbbells again. A rowing machine sounds like a great idea.
Kim - I think you are right on with "home cooking" being a great way to save on food costs. On the rare occasions I go out to eat, I cringe at the cost - the price of one sandwich is often half of what I spend per week on groceries. So it has to be exceptional and something I wouldn't make at home.
Rosemarie - my heart skipped a beat when you said you almost got stuck under your house. If you ever go under there again, please reassure us you'll have your phone with you. Or better yet, find someone else to go under there. ๐ You cruise sounds like fun - I think I could share a cabin with someone for just a day or two. Beyond that, I'd need my privacy.
Barbie - smart thinking buying smaller bags of dog food. I buy the smaller bags of potting soil - yes they are more expensive but I can lift them and lug them around. You are right, the loss of a beloved pet is like no other. I feel grief looking at photos of the precious dogs and all animals we had throughout our lives. Actually more grief than looking at deceased family members including DH, lol.
Pip - you and Kirby are such great dog people. I bet if and when the time is right, a new puppy will join your household. I try not to rush these types of decisions anymore, especially since all of the work would be up to just me.
Lisa, Tina and others who aren't fond of the shower anymore- same here. Once or twice a week does it for me, depending on the weather and if I got dirty/sweaty doing something outside. Otherwise I'm content to do the "sponge bath" thing, do a long foot soak, etc. in the interim.
Kylia - look at your contented kitties. ๐ Last night I dreamed DH was still alive and someone delivered a surprise gift - a big box with THREE kittens in it. DH got busy making them a house and setting them up in a nice area. I know I dream a lot but don't often remember them. I'd been reading a lot about a cat rescue here.
Carol - my sympathy! Prayers going up! Our A/C conked out here a couple times when the temps got over 95F before we got the new system. I hope the serviceman can do the repair for you this afternoon. Looks like your nights only cool off into the 70's so no wonder you are sweating. Whew!
Mo - you do such a good job with your little patients. You care for them like your own. Glad you made it through your MRI OK. Hope you get relief from the heat quickly too.
Kylia - Lisa any advice on this mower problem: I'm having a problem sliding off of the mower seat when I'm mowing on a very slight right-leaning slope.(No danger of tipping the mower-not that steep.) I can't seem to get my feet braced right to anchor me on for some reason, I even have changed shoes when I mow. I don't remember that happening in other years - maybe I'm not good at leaning anymore due to my back or the seat is worn and has lost its "grip". The seat looks level. I wonder if they make cloth seats for these riding mowers or seat belts - I'm going to check it out. Yesterday I avoided mowing places that weren't completely flat and went back over those areas with the weed eater instead. Hopefully I can get Charlie out here to take it for a test drive and see if he's having that problem too, maybe it needs a new spring. I may have to budget for a new mower next year. This one is 8 years old.
Yesterday I got over 13,000 steps. ๐ฎ Some of those steps were the result of the jiggling I got on the riding mower, lol. I got nearly all of my lawn mowed and did the massive weed eating. Walked a lot too.
MFP is acting up for me. Yesterday the Food Diary had a completely different look for a few hours. This morning, I hit "Save Draft" and suddenly I got kicked out - no poster ID showing up, draft disappeared. So I logged in again and now it's OK, draft still there. I better get this posted before something else happens.

Lanette - I use shelf liner like this one from Walmart - It should stick to the mower seat and to your pants, according to what you're wearing. Sticks VERY well to sweatpants or leggings. Please note, once it gets dusty or dirty, the grip goes away, but you can just get it damp and it will do fine. I use it on my office chair so that if I scoot across the floor I don't leave my chair behind! Kylia may have something more professional, thoughโฆ ๐

I'm curious, those of you who struggle to shower, what age did this start at? I am one to take a bath every night before bed. Without fail. Like I might miss 2 or 3 nights a year. Sometimes it is a long soak with a good book, sometimes it is just a couple of minutes to get clean before I head to bed. If I am really dirty, like yard work dirty, I will shower instead, but normally, it's a bath. I'll also shower to wash my hair, but that is usually in the morning and I'll still bathe that night to wash the day off me.

The lab results were the last ones I got from my previous functional doctor. I will ask my new doctor to be sure to request these same tests the next time she orders blood work. The functional doctor took blood every 3 months. The new doc, every 6. We will see. Cardio doc may be the one to order the comprehensive cholesterol tests.
Bought some Gas-X which, after research, was an approved treatment for the gas pains related to my colitis. I am also eating much smaller meals but having snacks in between to stay around 1600 calories. No citrus according to research, so switched from oranges to applesauce for snacks/dessert. Also bought some Lactaid in case dairy is involved. I am also reducing/ cutting out gluten as well (also from my research). Yesterday was good, so will continue with this plan for now. Still overcast with high chance of rain/thunder storms this evening. Too muddy and humid to walk. This old body can't tolerate that weather any longer.
Lucy picking on Wicket and Wicket no longer tolerates Lucy's insistent terrorizing. LOL, I am letting Wicket defend herself as Lucy needs to learn limits on the biting! My hand looks like I had a fight with a cat! She is getting better, and learning quickly.
Thought for Today:
I had a quiet game of tennis today.
There was no racket.
