p.s. I am at the point in my recovery where I only wear my brace when I am active but it still feels unstable and hurts like hell, especially after I've been walking around:)

Have you asked your doctor for a referral to physical therapy? That's the best answer. Rehab, when there's a chance of reinjury, is a good time to get advice from a professional.

If that's not possible, then using pain as the guide is the main remaining option, and it's not very reliable. It's less reliable in someone who doesn't have long years of injury and recovery experience personally: I think over time we somewhat learn ways in which "this hurts but isn't increasing injury" type of pain differs from "I'm increasing/aggravating the injury or stalling recovery" type of pain.

I hope/assume you're using whatever other rehab modalities may've been recommended to you, things like ice, heat, self-massage (foam rolling and whatnot), elevation . . . as may be appropriate, since not all interventions are appropriate for all cases.
