Diverticulitis is NOT going to be death of me!

Hi y’all, I’m Kim from central Texas. 57 (and a half! lol) and I am struggling. Tomorrow will be four full weeks of being sick from my third diverticulitis flare-up, but this one is a doozy. Last time I was on a scale was two weeks ago at my doctor’s office, and at that point I’d lost 15 lbs since the last time I’d seen him, which was the last Tuesday in July. Can I afford the weight loss? Oh heck yeah! I could stand to lose a good 30 more! But that’s not my goal. My goal is to learn how to eat to heal myself right now, and then to learn how to eat so that I never get this again. Until Monday when I met with a nutritionist for the first time in my life, my diet since I got sick had consisted of broth and kefir (so stinkin YUMMY!), and actually I was able to add so some dumb ramen (I really feel the need to chew), and potatoes. Oooo boy…

My nutritionist is amazing! She spent extra time with me, gave me some quick checklists for different fats, proteins, and fiber, a meal plan, set goals…the whole nine yards. Right now my goal is to have five 300-cal meals per day, with fiber (a low amount) and all the other things I should be ingesting. I’ve yet to make three of those meals, and I’m so not even close to my protein or fat goals. I’m getting better every day at reaching my fiber goal but I’m still a good distance away.

I have ZERO appetite, and the nausea never ends. Anything I do make myself eat is a struggle. I have to sit upright and still and carry on a conversation with my body that we NEED this so stomach, do NOT reject it!

As God is my witness (and yes, you’re supposed to read that in a Scarlett O’Hara voice), as God is my witness, I WILL LEARN TO EAT RIGHT!!

Hope this helps! Sounds like a good next steps approach. Let us know how it goes.

If you can eat yogurt, you might try Oikos Pro. It has 20 grams of protein in a 5.3 ounce container. I have diverticulosis as well. My last it is flare up was last month. I am reading a book that I hope will help with getting my gut back under control (The Gut Brain Paradox). Good luck!
