The idea here is that we all have the freedom to choose. I would completely support your right to take a flu shot. I will continue to utilize own right to decline. The mod comment discredits your ability to debate the topic with intelligence. I'm out.

Well you have that right, assuming you don't work in many healthcare professions. Most of them are actually required to get the flu shot.

Or the military, or childcare/teaching professions.

Isn't that interesting. All of the professions where it's really critical to minimize the amount of sick time employees have off mandate flu shots.

Go figure. Clearly the flu shot increases the odds that you get sick and miss work. Wait.

Yeah, I've argued this point before, to no avail.

FWIW, never had the flu in my life. Never got the flu shot until it was required of me in 2008, and have gotten the shot every year since.

I suspect this has more to do with the level of bureaucracy/hierarchy in these fields than a results-based decision.

I could be wrong, but I'm reasonably certain it plays a part in this.

Turns out you are wrong! Go look at the data.

Whose/what data? (I'm trying to imagine what source data it would take to convince me that the power of the military bureaucracy doesn't play a role in their requirements for immunizations...but this could be tainted based on my father's required "immunizations" during his time in Nam. They have a pretty strong record of skewing their priorities. But I guess that is arguably what's in play here as well. Also, I'm convinced that if the PTB thought they could get away with making it mandatory for everyone in the country, they would...which tells me all that is stopping them is the necessary "bureaucracy" to make it happen.)

I have never had one and won't until it is "required" which should be very soon under government run healthcare.

It's not mandatory anywhere else there is socialised healthcare...

There is no socialized (or "government-run") healthcare in the US either.

You went from "more to do with" to "play a role."

    Yawn. Pick one.

    Government-required healthcare...

...so they apparently make the "requirement" rules...

...so I'm going to say that's close enough to "government-run" for purposes of this discussion.

and being in the military he was required to get it every year...

Mandatory Diptheria, Hepatitis, Yellow Fever and Rabies shots, but other than that not even the anthrax shot was mandatory.

Bollox to getting a flu shot as mandatory

I'm not locked into a pie chart here. I'm confident about "play a role" and suspect "more to do with"...but honestly, they're both more hunches than they are well-researched conclusions.

I'm not going into battle with these positions...just sharing my current thoughts on the topic...

    ...on the MFP CCF&G forum.

Maybe not in the UK, but in the US:

    http://www.army.mil/article/86821/

"All Soldiers, including active duty, Reserve, and National Guard, are required to be vaccinated against influenza annually."

The winter season is upon us so I just wanted to give everyone a friendly reminder to get vaccinated this holiday season against this year's flu strain.

    Happy Monday!

Sorry OP, it took ONE page for this thread to go insane.

(LOL. You say that like his desire for this thread was for a totally sane discussion. :drinker: )

Of course not. Was just a PSA.

It sounded like it but then again the subject matter tends to drive people from one side of crazy to the other.

The CDC says wear helmets on motorcycles. But in 2010, 88% of motorcycle fatalities in states with helmet laws were riders wearing helmets.

So the other 12% were breaking the law ;)

    Not a meaningful example

The anthrax vaccine series is mandatory if you are deploying to a foreign country, and so is the smallpox vaccine (which really sucks if you've ever gotten it).

I'm well-read enough in general that I'm comfortable with my conclusions...even if I don't have cites and statistics on this particular topic at the ready...

...and the facts you've shared so far with the class have been fascinating.

Oh I gathered that, and it doesn't surprise me given how unthinkingly an excessively bureaucratic the US military is.

Still think it's excessive, the risk within the community is not that high.

I see. So what is the risk in that community, exactly? Please use numbers when answering.
