Evil Subway - Read this if you eat at there!

I can only assume this person did their research. This is really scary for anyone who eats at Subway often. I used to eat there 1-2 times a week. Since I work from home now and don't eat out much, I don't eat there very often. Maybe once every 2 months. This is very sad news since I really like eating there.

From the article:

"Somebody should inform Subway that to make real whole-wheat bread all you really need is whole-wheat flour, yeast, salt, water, and maybe some honey. But that doesn’t really do anything for shelf life or the fact that the stores do not bake their breads.

While all the sandwiches contain chemical additives, refined bleached flour, preservatives, artificial colors, MSG, refined sugars, GMOs, and over 50 ingredients, only three contain nitrates. Yea! Far out! Only three!"

If you want to control everything you eat, grow it, mill it, butcher it, make it yourself. Simple.

    true.

It's true that Subway wheat bread isn't "whole wheat". I've known that for eons. You can look that up on their site.

Something about any site called "hangthebankers" sets off my "tin foil hat" alarm.

    Yup.

You're surprised that lunch meats contain nitrates?

I don't eat there enough to fret over that. But, when I do I will enjoy every bite.

Did you honestly think they had bakers in the back of those tiny subway stores making fresh bread, using no preservatives and such? Really?

eta: it's not like this is some kind of evil conspiracy on subway's part-they post the ingredient make up of their bread right on their website. There's absolutely nothing wrong with their bread or their ingredient lists, but if for some reason you don't want to eat these ingredients, then it's pretty easy to check and then chose some place else.

Did you mean to say they don't make their bread or bake it? Because I have been there when they have pulled bread out of the oven and seen them put more in to bake.

In, just so I can read all the fun comments later.

Also, they don't call it whole-wheat bread so eh.

Are we saying that it's bad that they have preservatives and the rest of the shizzle (I really don't care) or bad that they have nitrates (which are in pretty much all the veggies you'll eat - being that it's like fertilizer and shizz)?

I'm confused on this sentence. Ive seen them bake their own bread. Take it straight from the oven and put it on the counter to make me a sandwich.

    Maybe I'm reading this wrong.

    "

that's because the article is wrong.
The bread comes to the store in frozen, unrisen loaves (you can buy bread & rolls, etc like that in the grocery store), then it's thawed, proofed, baked, etc. in each store.

What did you expect from a fast food chain? If you believed Subway was healthy, you weren't really thinking for yourself, just buying into their marketing. I don't eat there anymore, in part because of the over-processing.

What surprises me is why this would surprise anyone with any common sense.

Oh... you can get healthy at Subway, but you're not going to find the infamous 'clean' eating there.

If you think Subway is any 'healthier' than any other fast food joint, you're doing it wrong. Knowing that, you can either choose to eat there in moderation or not at all.

So....I like food. I'm going to eat what food tastes good. Whether that's chemical laden vegetables at Subway, or sugary processed Oreos or some kind of meat substance at McDonalds.

I'm not a farmer. I will never be a farmer. Eating "clean" is still impossible. If you trust the foods at the grocery store are what they say they are you are sadly mistaken.

    And you eat it anyways.

    And you're still alive.

Just eat what you want. Nothing doesn't have chemicals, preservatives, etc. If you want to know what you eat, buy a cow, a chicken, grass feed it, plant some veggies, and call it a day.

While I appreciate the shock value of the "Great Subway Deception", if you're really interested, Subway makes full ingredients information available here: http://www.subway.com/Nutrition/Files/usProdIngredients.pdf

Impressive bro-science in the original article tho. :drinker:

In for "subway is satan"

And if you think Subway's bread is bad, you obviously haven't looked at the ingredients in the bread you buy at the store. What do you think they put in it to make it last?

They do bake their own bread, they just dont make their own dough.

    Why is this surprising?
