This is what is wrong with the fitness industry

20140118_181843.jpg

I snapped this shot at a local ****'s Sporting Goods. This was the heaviest of the "pretty" kettlebells clearly being marketed to women, and the lightest of the one's being marketed neutrally (or to men for that matter). Yes, they are the same exact weight.

Additionally, here's the model used in the marketing campagin:

The woman has absolutely ZERO muscle. That has to be the first time she even though about lifting a kettlebell. And is it just me, or are those arms a bit to Gumby-like to be natural? For her sake, I hope there is some photoshop occurring....

Sadly, it isn't just the fitness industry. If you pay attention to advertising, you will see the gender difference everywhere! IMHO, the worse offenders are food/cooking (besides beer), fitness, cleaning products, and kids toys/clothes.

Yeah, that's true. I get pretty annoyed when all the cooking/cleaning ads are all for women. My husband does ALL the cooking lol.

That's so cute. That little pink kettlebell might be a good paperweight.

Those kettlebells look like they'd really be good for toning

The fitness industry has long known that females will spend more money than males on personal self improvement. This is actually how the word "TONED" came about. Rather than saying "weight lifting" (which was associated with building huge muscles with males) "toning" sounded much softer and more feminine and didn't reek of muscularity. This help to create many "toning" programs out there catering to females and yes it's made the fitness industry BILLIONS.
Unfortunately lots of females out there are under the impression that female muscles can grow at the same rate as male muscles and that's why there is so much confusion on how to train. Good thing is that sites like this help to dispell the myths of muscle gain (especially on a calorie deficit) and how hard it actually is to put on pounds of muscle with moderate training.

Haha weird that the kettle bells came up. I purchased a 5kg kettle bell, cheap crap one full of sand. Then went to decathlon n spent more on a 10kg one. The 10kg one is half the size of the 5kg one. Infact the 5kg is so clunky, it's hard to use. Lesson, cheap kettle bells suck.

    IDk.

If they made an entire line of pink kettle balls that went heavy (and I was into kettle balls) I'd probably buy them because I like the color pink.

This is what's wrong with all advertising. There's a lot of criticism for the way toys are marketed as well.

Not to mention, virtually no one needs a 10lb. kettlebell. Even an 18 is kinda puny for most things.

I agree I like pink...I would buy pink plates for lifting, I want pink gloves with orange lacy bits and pink and orange shoes...

    so what it's pink.

ETA I don't want to live in a gender neutral society ...I am not a feminist either, I am just a woman who likes pink, I like purple and blue too..and when I had my son...he never wore pink as a baby..if he wants to now fine...he preferred trucks to dolls didn't have much to do with me.

    Not just fitness industry....

I once read this supposably motivational story about a woman saying she's been working out for 6 months to lose weight and stay fit and how beauty comes from sweat.

As much as I appreciate her point, I really find that story disturbing: she went from being 10lbs underweight to being 20lbs underweight, with absolutely no muscles or whatsoever, and she's promoting "staying healthy and tuning your body". Her training is basically dancing-like movements with some jogging. She's 5'7" ,105lbs and she looks like a toothpick. This is just wrong in so many ways....

everbody has to start somewhere, not sure why there is any use in pointing out her physique.

the market is consumer driven. they make the pink ones because women buy them.

you seem to be assuming that the industry is dictating what women should be lifting. forget about what the weight looks like and problem solved.

To me its only and issue if a women thinks she's limited to pink sporting goods. in that case she just has issues.

I have a Danskin barbell set with pink, orange, blue and green plates. Though they're not big enough for leg work, so I had to buy some ugly plates to mix in.

I have to say I tend to use the ones that are colored at the gym I belong to over the non rubberized grey ones for two reasons. 1 I find the rubberized ones easier to grip especially when swinging and my hands start to sweat and 2. because lets face it, they are just pretty LOL. My gym goes up to 25 covered!

I don't think it was fair to comment on the model's fitness level. Lots of women don't want to be muscular -- and no I don't mean "bulky" or "manly." I mean they don't necessarily want the kind of arms and legs that a lot of the women on this site seem to be shooting for. Some people like to lift light with their girly weights and get it done that way, and you CAN and DO still see results from that, just different ones. I wish more people on this site would see that.

sure thats one point. the other point is theres no need to limit yourself to pink weights.

so the pink ones stop at ten. who cares. that doesn't mean your out of options.

you also can't get rainbow ones (or maybe you can, but probably not over 10)

i mean what does this really say? the evil exercise industry is telling you shouldn't lift more then 10 lbs? or people are just being silly complaining that a particular color of weight isn't available?
