Let Your Geek Flag Fly

Most people give up playing the recorder in primary school. I stopped at 15 and got to grade 6. So uncool.0

Comic books. Lots of them.
Transformers toy collection. I realized I had a problem when I agreed to meet someone from Craigslist at a 7-11 at 11:30pm to buy a box of old Transformers. His girlfriend called us nerds. I really coudn't argue. My wife made fun of me when I got home.0 -
You said flag right?
I love you.
I love you both!

I know way too much about birds. I can identify almost any of them at a glance, some from just hearing them or their flight patterns. I do not consider myself a "bird watcher" however. No handlebar moustache.0

I have started playing MW3- All or Nothing....getting some knife skills. lol
My son is setting me up with a clan tag??
I'll be in a group with a bunch of teenagers.

I've been running Linux of some flavor since...1997? Awhile, anyway.
My day job is head of IT.
I run FreeBSD+ZFS on a 14TB home server that fits in the size of a shoebox and is whisper quiet.
I know almost everything there is to know about proper bra fitting.
I will read literally anything put in front of me.
You got me beat on the home server level, but I built my first Linux kernel in 1992. But then I moved on to Solaris/AIX and manage big iron in data centers. I just left a job managing some several dozen pedabytes of storage and building out a 10gig replication network between two states. I specialize in business continuity and disaster recovery.
My first computer was a Commodore Vic20. I ran a 32 line BBS. I helped build the Internet. I programmed mods in Assembly code. I worked at both the Air Force Academy on a rocket science book and proofing code at NORAD.
I've built several data centers, recovered data systems in several disasters including one of the most devastating on data in the history of information technology.
I have built my latest gaming rig connected into my DLP TV just for Diablo 3. I don't play hardly any FPS games, though I suspect the Fallout series counts. I played through all of Dead Space back to back. Truth is, as much as I love gaming, I am pretty bad at it, and that's ok. I logged 265 hours in Final Fantasy XIII and 209 in Skyrim. I'm an RPG girl.
I have a huge Anime collection, preferring the ones that eat your soul. I was the only person to recognize a Light cosplay at the Denver ComiCon last year, and NO ONE recognized my cosplay character from Doctor Who... even though it was a dead ringer for Jenny. I went to the SD ComiCon 5 years straight before it got too big, I've been to DragonCon and Denver ComiCon 2 years running, and now get to go this year.
And finally, I read quantum mechanic books for fun.0 -
I wear glasses and I'm sooo random! I WANT 2 MARRY DOCTOR WHO AND HARRY POTTER. I love video games, too! THE SIMS Y'ALL.0

Marvel > Dark Horse > DC in that order. but ultimate vanity goal is to dress up as Ms. Marvel and Batgirl at Dragon Con.
I KILL it at six degrees of Kevin Bacon b/c I am that much of a movie nerd.
and when the great Trollando and Misha ('s sock monkey acct) included me in a convo on twitter, I had such a fangasm it should be appalling, but instead it makes me smile a lot.
I am a language nerd
not a math nerd
but that doesn't matter. b/c we are living in the

I'm a huge gamer, have been ever since I was two. The first time I picked up that Sega Genesis controller, I knew this was something for me.
I'm an otaku. I have been since I was 8.0 -
I met my husband on a Star Wars message board.
....
Also a Whovian, Harry Potter, LOTR fan. As far as comics, Marvel girl here.
Don't play video games as I'm hideously uncoordinated, but I do read urban fantasy like the Rachel Morgan series and Dresden as well.
Have been to SDCC, SW Celebration (III and IV and hope to go to VII) and Wizard World in Chicago.... and my Twitter feed is 1/3 friends, 1/3 geek news, and 1/3 NFL and NBA tweets. (Okay, the NFL and NBA doesn't count.)0 -
I love The Lord of The Rings0

My husband and I own a video game, gaming, and geekery store. Need I say more?0

I've earned my geek patches in Sci-Fi (esp. Star Trek), comic books (esp. Marvel, Image, and DC), and IT/electronics (e.g. home lab).
Example of my IT geekery, an hour ago I was temp-moving several GBs of M4V files from my laptop to my mirrored NAS and completely saturating a 100MB wired connection!
My single 100Mb switch is the current botleneck. I eagerly anticipate the speeds that I'll get when I finally have time to upgrade my internal backbone with dual 1Gb managed switches. I already have the hardware sitting here, just need the time to do it. ZOMG the speeds I'll have then!!
I've already drawn up plans and set aside funds to CAT6 wire my entire house to distribute both data and video to all rooms. Eventually it'll completely eliminate the need for the FIOS DVR and STBs that I have to rent monthly.
#ETA: Does a ~21 year IT career count? (more than half my life)0 -
I read more science fiction books in an average year than normal people read [any] books in an entire lifetime. I have Steam and XBox Live installed even on my phone. I spent this past weekend at Sacramento Wizard Con. I have spreadsheets for my weight loss and exercise. I maintain a current membership in the Society of Women Engineers...
Oh, wait, only ONE thing? Not sure my overachiever nature can limit it to one thing, lololol.0 -
Proud member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society!!
