Tom -- don't EVEN say you had to treadmill cause it was too hot! It was in the low 40s at my house this morning -- had to break down and turn the heat on :grumble:
bgood -- that IS a word. Now go on and get those planets aligned!!!
Happy day!
Enjoy it!
Julie
Actually, it was a matter of my legs being super tight / crampy, my stomach being crampy, everybody in the group bailed on me this morning, so I'd be working out alone anyway, thought I'd avoid the crowd at the polling station at the high school (especially since we use the track 'illegally'), blah, blah, blah
Actually, it was 65 degrees and relatively less humid, so a great day to be running outdoors. But I figured I would keep pace better on the treadmill, it's only 15 feet from the restroom, etc, etc0 -
well i was actually planning on it, but this seals the deal -- MUST RUN ON TRACK (can u hear me repeating in my head?)
kechie -- that is AWESOME that your daughter is using the term "tapering" to tattle on you...good stuff!
will have a full report later on Backup Track Tuesday0 -
Bgood -- put down the Halloween candy and get to the track -- we are depending on you :bigsmile:0

Good morning folks...
Here's my report on the MCM... as best as I can recall. You know, being involved in a train wreck makes you not remember so clearly sometimes... 5k breakdowns... Until the second half...
The morning started out great. Cool, crisp air, got to the starting line well in advance, lined up where I figured I should be... The gun went off and the run began. Now, before we get into the run, I want to say I ran with my running partner, the one that is a REALLY good runner. He asked me my target time, my realistic time, etc... and with all of them he said "We should hit mile 2 at 18 minutes, nothing faster". He knows better than I, so that's what we did. We started off running and all was well. We hit mile 2 at about 17:40, slightly ahead of schedule but nothing major. Mile 3 came and went way ahead of pace, but it was a lot of downhill in that mile, so the increase was written off to gravity. 5k time, 26:36. Not bad... actually, really good, dead on target pace.
The next 5k brings us into Georgetown. Here comes the sun, ahh, that feels good. Wait, that feels... warm. Mile 4 comes, I'm running behind one of the wheelchair racers. He has one leg, the other is being carried on his support member's back. Damn, I'm lucky to even be running... Push on. Mile 5, hey look, there's the steps from The Exorcist. Wow. Mile 6 has a pretty good hill, slow the pace, maintain the effort level... Next 5k time, 27:03. Sweet, still going well.
Miles 7 through 9, more of the same. Saw the leader pass by going the other way on the out and back... Damn, he's moving FAST. Running back through Georgetown and into DC a bit. Nice crowd, definitely pumped up. Keep the pace, keep the pace. Next 5k time, 27:15. Good job, settle in.
Miles 10 - 12... Mile 10, labored. What's going on? Shake it off... Gel, take some gel. Mile 11, feeling stiff, somewhat winded, running still, but tight. Mile 12... I have to walk, 2 minutes, recover and go. Feel ok? Yeah, run again... next 5k, 30:07. Ok, shake that off, you're still on pace.
Half split... 1:55 and change. Right on.
Mile 13 - 15, more tighness, ok, really tight. Walk out the cramps. Minimal crowds here, the sounds you hear are the falling of the other people's feet. Walk some, run more, walk some, run more... What's going on? 5k time, 32:55.
Miles 16 and 17. Wow, look at those buildings... National monuments. These crowds are huge. I'm going to walk now. 5 minutes, 6 minutes... Need to recover. Started running again somewhere in mile 17 and hit the "MUST STRETCH NOW" moment. My legs were as tight as they've ever been. 2 minutes, side of the road, rubbing out the cramps. Mile 18 was good, fell back into the under 9 minute mile, though this 5k segment is shot. Ok, maybe the cramps are gone? Finish strong... 5k time, 37:46.
Miles 19 - 21. Who knows... Super long bridge, saw people breaking down all over the place. I must have stopped to rub out more cramps on that bridge than I did in the past year. I met a pretty cool lady wearing a ladybug costume, that was neat. I thought I remembered hearing they're supposed to be good luck? Not today... 5k time, 39:57. Yeah, that bridge sucks.
Miles 22 - 25. Basically a death march into Arlington. It actually went a lot better than the one before. My official 5k time is 37:39, but I stopped for about 4 minutes while my friend stood in line for a porta-pit. He said "sorry for the stopping" and I laughed at him and said "Yeah, like THATS why I'm not going to hit my time"
The last mile was cool. Didn't have to walk. Run up the little hill at the end and finished my last marathon ever. (For now)
All told, it was a good day. I'm still lost on what happened. I did my last 20 mile training run in under 3 hours and felt fine. In this thing, I hit 20 miles at 3 something.
I never want to run that far again...0 -
Way to hang in there Nitz.:drinker: It sounds like you didn't finish in the time you wanted. Still so proud of you for hanging in there and crossing the finish line. A lot of people, myself included, cannot imagine running that far.:smokin:0

Bgood -- put down the Halloween candy and get to the track -- we are depending on you
what candy??? :indifferent: (pay no attention to the chocolate on my face and my fingers)
so i made it out...and more importantly, made it back! def one of those days where the body could have talked the mind out of it. but you know, it really helps to have a group here to be accountable to.
10min warmup
5 x 1min speed w/ 1min recovery ea
10 min intermediate
repeat speed session (only did 1, 3, 5 hard)
8 min cooldown
6 miles total
might be hurting tomorrow, but good to have it over and done with
(please notice out the window on your right, the planets are now in alignment...have a nice day)0 -
I never want to run that far again...
Yeah, you say that now, but after the soreness wears off, the bad *kitten* will kick in, and you'll be thinking, 'I can do it faster next year'
Seriously, sorry it didn't go as well as you had hoped. The frustrating thing after a tough race is that ,much of the time, you can't figure where it went wrong. Some days just work better than others.0 -

Thanks for getting out there! Sounds like a good work-out0 -
 No offense nitz, or any of us candy eating crawlers....
there is a reason the thread is called turtle club....
Where is the beer...:drinker: :drinker: :drinker:
Listing marathons in the finished column is still highly rewarding, great job nitz. Better hope Jared doesn't beat that time or you've gotta do 26.2 inches of subway club, his favorite....haha!0 -
BTW.... thanks for posting the topic! I very muched missed all of this, but no grease antics from me, seriously, who would do something like that?!? aaahhheeemmm!
Ray0 -
Ray, I know not what you speak of....
You know you secretly wish YOU were Danny Zukko0 -

My aunt today asked me if I was going to do the Philadelphia Marathon in 3 weeks. I laughed at her and said I'm never doing another one of them again, ever, it's just too draining.
I stopped talking to her.
Thought.
I might run it bandit.
In 19 days.
I'm an idiot.
:indifferent:0 -
now hat was funny...and i know you're dead serious too.
anybody want to start a pool on when Nitz's next marathon is? sounds like we better move quick!!0 -
my vote -- since it IS election day -- he runs one in the next 30 days!0

haha! I'm betting Nitz either sneaks one in before the end of the year or to start off 2011!
Thanks for the catch Tom! Good to know the grammar police are on the job!
Hope you are feeling better!
B~ thank you so much for aligning the planets! It is greatly appreciated! Nice times! :drinker:
Kechie~ what is this taper of which you speak? Actually I do believe that mine begins in another 10 days! Which half are you running this weekend?
Julie~ way to figure out a way to make everyone happy! :drinker: I am seriously impressed!!! :drinker:
Ray~ c'mon! Everyone loves Grease! Thank YOU for the name and the idea! :flowerforyou:
Nitz~ I'm not sure if I'm relieved or disappointed to discover that you weren't speaking to a ladybug of the insect variety?!?! Sorry that it wasn't the race you wanted, but give yourself a lot of credit! 3 marathons already this year!!! Amazing! :drinker:
An incredibly easy 8 miles this morning??? (but much closer to 80 minutes than 40! ) Not sure what that was about! It was freezing cold to start and windy but we finished the 1st mile and I thought, hmmm, this is going MUCH better than I expected! I think maybe it was relief that it was the longest run we have other than our LSD runs on the weekend! Yeah!
Now boxing and kickboxing were another story! Yikes! Very tired for those!
Have a great evening everyone!!!!
btw Nitz~ changed my ticker in honor of you and your friend!0 -
OK.... we ALL pick a marathon next year and run it....HA! That would be awesome, and I've heard great things about M&M's at mile 18.0
-
Yeah...
I'm going to sign up for Philly. 19 days until the next marathon. Let's see...
My mom said I'm insane.
My running partner said "you're crazy".
How can I not, miles 20 - 22 go through my childhood neighborhood. Come on, it's destiny.
I'm going to figure out WTF is wrong with me during races and kick it this time.
Give me sub 4 or give me... Um... Another marathon. :laugh:0 -
    This is great stuff!
I am running the City of Oaks in Raleigh Becky. It is a great race. This is my third time. I know how Nitz feels. Partly, I think I keep doing this race b/c I can't run it in the time I'd like to finish it. Based on my last long run, a pr this year is not looking promising.:ohwell: I just keep trying.:laugh:0 -
Nitz- You're nuts... and that's why you fit right in here
Ray- ditto You're nuts, too!
Becky- freezing cold to start your run, huh? What was it? 70*? It was 27* when I woke up this morning :grumble:
As for me, feet felt better with the insoles today. Still no running, though. Thinking this weekend I'll give it a try- just something short. Other than that, nothing to report other than the fact that there was a fly belly-up in my salad at lunch today... they're gluten free, right? :huh:0 -
OK.... we ALL pick a marathon next year and run it....HA! That would be awesome, and I've heard great things about M&M's at mile 18.
That would be SOOOO awesome! I vote for something along a beach....in other words...flat!
Let's see if I remember where everyone is
Kel ~ Connecticut?
Kechie~ North Carolina
Ray~ Iowa
Julie ~ Virginia
Tom ~ Florida
Me ~ South Carolina
Nitz ~ Pennsylvania*
Byron~ Illinois
* thanks Julie! :flowerforyou:
Hmmm...looks like east coasties are the majority...
Nitz~ I am so NOT surprised! You ARE a lunatic!
Kelynn~ LOL! I KNEW someone would call me out...really it WAS freezing...barely 50! Even worse they are predicting 30's for lows by the weekend
Kechie~ that sounds like a beautiful course...City of Oaks!
5 miles planned this afternoon. The horror is I may have to get on that horrible dreadmill. Ran in the rain last week when it was 70s. Not sure I'm that enthusiastic about 50s and rain. I also have boxing and self defense classes on the schedule.
I hope everyone is having a good morning! :flowerforyou:0 -
Happy Hump Day!
Nitz is in PA -- and Byron is in Illinois.
And ummmm -- well -- the Shamrock is in March -- in Va. Beach -- righ smack dab in the middle of the East Coast -- just saying!!! Although the one with the chocolate fountain sounded pretty tempting too
No run this morning -- hoping to get in 5 or 6 tonight.
Enjoy the day!
Julie0 -
Maybe VA beach.....BUT.... I'll be in Disney world....hahaha! Kel was coming too.... right? Haha!
OK, east coast huh?
I do travel to the Carolina's often (Raleigh NC, Columbia SC, sometimes Seneca, SC too). Could make a great reason to visit...eh? It cracks me up....I ask for a "pop", they say, "you mean a coke", so I converted to calling it "soda" now....haha!
Back to fitness topics, I was such a loser last night. No run because of a number of reasons, so I am ultra-motivated for a great run tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day. I need some bulk miles big-time.
Ray0 -
Becky!!! You forgot me! I'm in california, I'm pretty sure that your best course is going to be here, BIG SUR MARATHON!!!!!!!!

Leash, I am so sorry
Forgive me? :flowerforyou:
I have been eyeballing the Long Beach Marathon in February, but Big Sur sounds awesome too! :bigsmile:0 -

Ok Ray! You'd better let Kechie and I know the next time you head our way! :grumble:
I refuse to convert to soda. I'm the lone holdout in our family. But, I do shamelessly say *y'all* and drawl with the best of them! :laugh:0 -
Ok... The Philly Marathon is sold out. If I run it bandit, what's the worst that can happen?
Also, any advice on what to do as far as running over the next 3 weeks?0 -
I forgive you Becky! Yea Long Beach is nice too and you would have good weather for sure.
Nitz- I'd say do one more long run, like 10-15 and then just take it easy with recovery runs. Your bodies probably hating you right now anyways hahaha, which means you should make it work harder! And if you get a pr even though your not registered it still counts!!! Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

As Leash said, one ~15 miler and some "garbage" runs just to keep moving.0 -

Yay I win!!! I wouldn't be surprised if its close to selling out already... I think its in April or May, can't remember. If by some chance I'm ready by then I'll be running it for sure. The half is actually in November but its not nearly as popular. I love running in that area, its awesome and you never get bored!
