  My copy of "The Thin Commandments Diet" arrived in the mail yesterday although I didn't actually pickup the mail until the end of the ritual of walking the frisky poodles around the neighborhood. I read the commandments to hubby over tea and even that was enough to inspire me. When I start actually reading the book, I shall probably drive hubby and all of you crazy with quotes from the book

:flowerforyou: Kackie we put our house on the market in February and started packing things and putting them in a rented storage unit so the house could be "staged" to look great for potential buyers. Besides having to have the house clean and tidy, we have to put the cats out, hide the litter box, and take the dogs with us while the house is being shown. Yes, it does feel less than "home" but we have faith that the buyer we seek will come along at the right time and until them we will stay busy and eat healthy.

:flowerforyou: Maxy, enjoy your vacation......you have a great plan......take it one day at a time and remember "structure gives control" (yes, a quote from my new book    )

Mary – I'm amazed at your relationship with the appliance store people. That's the way stores used to operate back in the 20's and 30's according to the tales I heard from my folks - having a running tab at the store. They just kept notes and you paid every so often. It's so neat to have that kind of a relationship with a shop today!

Amanda – Oh my. It is tempting to overdo in the garden but do be careful! So glad Teddy is doing well.

Robin – Please don't obsess over your weight on vacation. You are still adjusting to your new job and way more hectic schedule. With your determination I just know it will come together for you! :drinker:

Kackie – So glad you are a bit better today. Mmmm, yup I agree; having someone else massage/wash your hair is so worth it.

Maxy – You can do it! Come on down here and enjoy the beaches, swim and walk a lot and you will do great.

Small rant on knee/joint issues to follow. Feel free to ignore me! :blushing: :flowerforyou:

Sally – I'll try to keep this as short as possible. I have gone off on this subject before and I apologize. It's just hard when you are sold on something not to go on and on.

Now to the point – I have had joint problems for 30 years. My knees were bad and I was slowly quitting things I love to do. The worst was my wrists though - I couldn't button buttons, zip my jeans, open jar lids etc on bad days - when I was 35! Docs didn't help, they just wanted to give me very strong pain killers. Found glucosamine tablets. It worked. Got bad again – upped the dosage. It worked. Wash, rinse, repeat. Finally found in liquid form. Insert happy dance here! It absorbs much better than the tablets. I garden, typed all day and into the night for years at work, knit, do woodworking, hiked mountains last fall, use the elliptical an hour a day currently etc. The stuff works for me. I use Wellessee brand Glucosamine (2000 mg)/Chondroitin (1200mg)/MSM(500mg). It can be found at Sam's Club off and on and at Wal Mart fairly consistently, it least around here. I use the recommended dosage. I have played with (upped) dosages a LOT before I got the liquid. I don't have to do that now. If I forget a day I am usually okay. If I forget twice in a week, I pay for it. I really don't forget anymore. Pain is a good incentive to remember. This is as short as I could manage. If you try it, it may take a while to kick in. It did with the pills. It took a month before I was feeling the full effect. With the liquid I assume it won't take as long due to the quicker absorption. I don't know for sure because I switched directly from one to the other. Stepping off my soapbox now! Again sorry about the rant. :blushing:

Oh, I forgot to mention - it tastes HORRID. Just a warning. I take a bite of something or a sip of coffee to get the taste out of my mouth. Also, read the ingredients. There is a shellfish warning.

Off to fertilize my tomatoes and get to the gym.

I'm interested in being part of this group! You all sound super supportive of each other. One of you wrote about liquid Glucosamine/Chrondrotin. I'm going to give that a try, because the aches and pains are starting to interfer with my life.
I'm 57 and a two time breast cancer survivor. I gained 40# during chemo and have only gotten about half of it off. I lose weight very slowly...a pound or less a week even though I am a dedicated tracker of calories and an exercise fiend. I have lost 9 1/2# and still have about 15# to go. I absolutely love MFP!!!

    Hello,

Another sunny day so I will try to spend time in the garden.

We have a big mice/vole problem in the garden which has been getting worse for the past 3-4 years. Our property backs onto a large open area/utility corridor decked out with a groomed walking path and natural landscaping, just down from a fairly major river valley running through town. I love this as I take advantage of the ravine and river walking trails/hikes accessible off the back of the property but ..... this year the coyote, rabbit, mice/vole population seems to have gotten really out of balance. Perhaps the problem is the voles have found refuge in our yard (where the coyotes don't get in). I am considering getting a mouser cat for my yard??? I realize mice/voles are a natural part of living where we do, but I hate the lawn so dug up and that the voles are now starting to eat the roots of my plants and trees. I worry the mice/voles may get into the house! I have never had a cat in any family home I have lived in (so no experience with cats in the house), but remember how the 'barn cats' really managed the mice issue on the farm. The barn cats in my childhood memory were not your friendly cuddly cats I see many people enjoy as pets in their homes: barn cats were working and as long as milk was put out they were content to do their jobs and didn't want to be bothered by us kids. Trying to pet or god-forbid cuddle those cats often resulted in a scratch or two! So my dilemma: do I want to have a working cat around, living in my house, potentially clawing up my furniture in exchange for taking care of the mice/vole problem? Is it possible to have a happy 'barn cat' situation with the cat living in the heated garage, me putting out milk and essentially letting the cat live the same type of life as it would on the farm??? I am not a cat person and you can see my lack of experience here! A friend has found me a place to get a mouser cat, she is a cat person and feels I would soon 'fall in love' with a cat. I am really not sure??? I see many of you talk of your pets on this thread so thought I would ask if anyone has opinions/experience with having mouser cats living with you?

Eating healthy is going okay but I still am struggling with the temptation to succumb to emotional eating episodes and the most challenging part is I can't figure out any triggers as things are going well (except for the darn voles which is of course a minor problem in the scheme of things). I am going to try the apple cider vinegar recommendation: a solution for emotional triggers??wouldn't that be great!

Sending out wishes for a healthy day for all,
    Karlene

Just breezing through today. No exercise, and nothing done off of my list, as I am at work, then to the eye dr., then to a meeting. Oh well, at least the sun is shining, both outside and in my heart! Have a great Tuesday all!

    Good afternoon ladies,
I have been reading the posts and trying to catch up. so good to see so many but hard to keep track. I will not even try to remember who said what cause I will mess it up. Those going on trips, just have fun and try not to make food the focal point. You can have agreat time without eating every minute. If you do make a bad choice just try to get in extra exercise or do better next day.
Barbie I ordered my book from bookswap but it is taking awhile. the first person who had it never answered the request so they had passed it on to someone else. Hopefully I will get it soon.
I am doing great on food just really need to get back to workouts . Have a good day ladies.

Goodness, so many posts in a 24-hour period. What a great bunch of gals! Your posts make me  ! Problem is that I can't keep up with all the news.

:flowerforyou: Natalie, I noticed your 8 pound-loss weight ticker. Wasn't long ago you were so upset it was saying 0! You are doing a great job.

:flowerforyou: Maxy, have a great vacation. I'm hoping the beach will be in my near future. You'll do fine with the eating.

:flowerforyou: Barbie, I can relate with the house stuff. I dread the thought of ever moving again.

:flowerforyou: To everyone, hello! I can't remember everything I read! :ohwell:

Two things going on with me. DGS broke his arm and as I write this is at a pediatric orthopedic specialist because his growth plate is involved. Waiting for a call about that. He broke it pitching in a baseball game.

The Bluebird/Tree Swallow soap opera continues. In the bluebird house there is a blue bluebird egg and a slightly smaller white tree swallow egg. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

    Time to go.

    One day at a time.

We may have a storm this evening so I am going to shut the computer down.

I love to see the little pansy faces and all the different colors in my flowerbeds! I am glad for the tip on the liquid glucosamine and look forward to trying it!! Have a good evening, all!:flowerforyou:

    KARLENE,

My cats are cuddly ,fury, sweet, gentle and loving. I do know if any creature would enter the house, like a mouse, it would be killed. I know when I was a child in NY the cats were not so cuddly. They were something like what you described. They did not like a lot of petting and attention . They would scratch you at times. I am not a fan of having a cat live any place except the house unless there would be two and they can have each other for company. Perhaps your friend is right and you might take to the cat more than you think. I know scratching furniture is something cats like to do. It can be a problem sometimes. The scratching post helps.
Milk is not really good for cats. Their digestive system is not able to handle it. I know it seems wrong, we always put out milk for cats, but the veterinarians today say no. Good luck.

You all seem to be such busy people, fair puts me in the shadows altho' I have been able to do a bit more than usual in the last few days, as and when my back eases up a bit.

Had a very old dear friend call on me yesterday and we talked the hind legs of many donkeys - as the saying goes! Havn't seen her for such a long time as she move quite a few miles away. We both Ooed and Aahed over our rspective additions to the family tree and then went out to lunch.

Just a thought about the Glucosamine - Diabetics should check it out.

    Hello All,
I don't have good news from my weigh in tonight...I was up 1.2lbs!! I look over my food log and exercise and it looks relatively good. I am wondering if I have another period coming....I need to keep this in perspective. I have been meeting my goals for exercise and water. I am working on reducing the processed food. I don't want to lose my motivation....just keep on making the healthy choices.

Barbie…..can’t wait to read some of the quotes from the book.

Faye…..Thank you for the Glucosamine/Chondrotin/MSM idea. I can’t believe I didn’t remember that stuff. We have had two wonderful Newfoundland dogs (BIG, Wonderful girls) and both were on that successfully. When I read your post, I just smiled!! I will get some ASAP..and I’ll look for the liquid.

Dee..I hope all goes well for your grandson.

Natalie…hang in there…..As you can see by my post, I can relate!!

    Hi Everyone!

Wow.....I seem to be saying that a lot lately. So many new people, welcome to you all. You're certainly in the right spot for encouragment and support. I don't write every day but I do read the posts, it's become like a "fix" for me. I read, I feel recharged and I go about my business feeling so much better about what I'm doing.

Kackie.....Steroids! Star is right, everyone has a different reaction or response to the drug. I did gain weight when I had a series of shots. I ended up taking a supplement to recharge my ability to lose weight, or at least stop gaining. I was never told what exactly it effected, whether it was the adrenal glands or the thyroid but both need to be in good shape in order to lose weight.

    Hispixie & 4gracealone & all the others..........WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME.

Faye.....Was your trip to Alaska a cruise? I've been trying to get the hubby to go and he'd rather go to the Caribbean. My mom and his sister went to Alaska and they raved.

Superwoman (aka. Mary).....You should have kept the refrigerator, you wouldn't need a phone booth.

Barbie.....We have our condo listed on Craighslist in a few different cities. We've gotten more action there than with a realtor. You can also save some money on both sides because "No Commissions".

Maxy.....I think I'll adobt your 3 step program. It's short, sweet and to the point. Kinda like me....LOL

Sally.....Joint problems??? I had the same results as Faye with the Glucosamine. It works great, but I can't handle the Chondroitin, something about it just doesn't sit well with me. I played softball for over 30 years as a catcher....been paying for that for years but it's really not bad if I take the Glucosamine. I also added traveling lunges to my routine at the suggestion of a personal trainer and the more I do them the better the knees work.

The more I'm on this site the more I like it. It's wonderful that it is drawing so much attention. At our age, we're usually the forgotten lot. Too old for the kiddie pool and too young (some of you) for the senior coffee at Mickey D's. Just a very good mix of experiences and personalities.

Did I tell ya I love ya?????

Amanda - it seems like just yesterday that you were posting about the twin's birth!

Robin - enjoy the Caribbean! Say, do you want someone to help carry your bags????????? I've been working out, and I will volunteer, even without cost to you....lol

Went to the Y, then did some food shopping, then played mahjongg. I did have to leave early. It's just held so late in the day for me. I'd been gone almost all day. Honestly, I don't think I'll be going on Tuesdays much any more. But...on the bright side, I did maj once. I think it's called dumb luck and lots of jokers. I was so very close a few times, just one tile away from winning. But such is life

I'm ever so glad that I logged my food for dinner BEFORE I ate it because I would have been like 96 calories over. So since I hadn't eaten a few things, I just took them off so now I'm a bit (just a tiny bit) below my calorie limit for the day.

did an hour of Power Sculpt today. The class was mostly weights, and that's what I like. Tomorrow we have the Newcomer general meeting at 10, which means we should leave about 9:15. I do want to stop at Kohl's first, tho. From 8-1 they are having an early door sale and I have a coupon for an extra 20% off. There are a couple of things that I want to look at. After the meeting is our first "senior bowl". Some of the people are very intense, but I was talking to one lady who I know has been on that league for quite some time. She said that although some people are intense, most of the people are just there for a good time. Phew!!!! I do not work well under pressure. there was a free bowl yesterday, and out of 6 games I broke 100 three times, mainly because I wasn't under any pressure, of that I'm sure.

gracete - congrats, you deserve it. 13 pounds in one month! WOW! What's your secret???

Maxy - you go girl! Those are great goals!

pvsey - now that's interesting. We're interested in having you join us...lol Jump right in any time at all. Yet ANOTHER cancer survivor! My hat's off to you gals.

Hope everyone has a great evening.

Thank you to everyone who sent good wishes for my new great-grandson, J.J.

I haven't been on line much at all, because they discovered an issue with his blood today. My granddaughter is type O and the baby is type A. Apparently, J.J. has hemolytic disease of the newborn ABO Incompatability.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemolytic_disease_of_the_newborn_(ABO)

So, he had to have several more tests and stay in the hospital an extra day. Hopefully when they see the pediatrician tomorrow morning, we will learn more about what all that will involve.

Even with all the confusion, and the drama, I am glad that I was still able to track my food and still lost a bit, too.

    Hi everyone

Just a quick note before I have to dash off and get ready for work.

I've logged my food for the last two days and managed to keep under my calories and I've upped my water too so I'm hoping this will start to show in the next week or two.

I'm still suffering with hot flushes (every few hours!!)  It drives me insane - literally - my mind goes to mush and I forget what I am doing. Luckily most of the "girls" in the office are of a certain age too, so I am not on my own  but I hate this time of my life.

Deborah I hope your great grandson is okay, I've never heard of Hemolytic disease - I need to look it up. Best wishes to your grand daughter for a speedy recovery.

Amanda take care and don't overdo it, you don't want to be putting your recovery back a few weeks.

Sorry must dash, time is running away with me again.

I'll try and get back tonight.

    Bye for now

    Hello Everyone!:flowerforyou:

Wanted to thank you all for the birthday wishes. I didn't have the internet on at that time due to the move. Got it turned on today and my phone so life is good now. When I was without my laptop I felt disconnected and lost. I do everything with my computer. That and cell phones, how did we all get along without them before???:noway:

Well as I said we have completed our move. I spent the entire weekend emptying and tearing down boxes and organizing my new apartment. Mom is all situated in her room and I have her bed facing the window where she can look out at the pine trees and a pretty tree that has bunches of lavender flores on it. She loves the place!! Yesterday we visited the clubhouse and did laundry that is connected to it and also went into the library they have too. Mom played on the computer there, while I did laundry and she looked around the place too. Turns out that "The Committee" is having a pot luck on the 11th (Mexican theme) for Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Mother's Day. She checked out what everyone was bringing and told me to sign her up too! Now mind you, normally she is incognito most of the time and does not like socializing. :glasses: I was shocked to say the least. So I signed her up and she is bringing guacamole and chips, which I have to make. She was panicking because it was getting late and I still hadn't bought the avacados! I think she forgets that I do not have a car and can't just jump in and run to the market. I have to call around and see if someone is going out and would mind if I tagged along?:ohwell: Well I got the avacados, thank goodness and now mom can go to her little party tomorrow.

It's funny, but I am sitting at my laptop right now and looking around the apartment and I "FEEL" at home here, like I belong here. The apartment is very pretty and I have a big bedroom for myself and even the bathroom is large. It is much more modern than my old place and much more prettier. They have it landscaped very 'woodsy looking" and it is very quiet and peaceful here. My stuff goes well here and I have put up new windchimes and a little dragonfly whose wings move when a breeze hits it. This was mom's choice and the windchime is mine. Now that I have a bedroom again I need to buy a bed. My boyfriend, (feels funny saying that) came by yesterday to see the place and sat on the couch with me and said with his arm around me, "Now this is where you belong. You did not belong at the other place. You have moved up!"

Even the dogs like it here! Through the entire move they never freaked out. Scout even enjoyed riding in the big U-haul truck in the cab with me. He thought he was a hot shot! They love taking there walks here although Boo has become very snobby and refuses to pee on dirt and will now only go on the grass. Before at the old place it was not landscaped so she had to use dirt. Not anymore!!:noway: She and I got into a battle the other night. She decided at 11:30 pm that she needed to pee. So off I go in my pajamas stepping just outside in the flower beds so she can potty. NOPE! She wouldn't do it! She flat out refused and I got upset and called her a bad dog. She just looked at me defiantly. So there I go pissed off :grumble: about 25 yards away with her to a grassy spot in my pajamas. BUT when I get to the grassy spot, lo and behold the sprinklers were on!:noway: Now Boo will not pee when it is raining and I am thinking to myself "Now she will pee in the dirt!" NOPE! Darn it if she doesn't stroll right into the middle of the sprinklers with her tiny little stubborn face held high and squat and take a long pee!! By the time she finished she was drenched and I was furious!!:explode: The whole way back I was grumbling at here and actually asking her if it was really worth it to do that to prove her point??!! I KNOW she did it on purpose! So now I am drying her off at midnight and we are both cold. I'm telling you I could have killed her!!

But all in all, everyone is more happier now.

    Faye:flowerforyou:

My knees have been bad for years now and I walk like an orangatan because of it. I am always in pain and as you said, "Docs just uped the painkillers." I did try the tablets like you but I didn't notice any improvement. (Maybe I didn't take them long enough. I think I expected 'overnight' results. However I will try the liquid form you suggested. I am praying it will help me.The pain is unbearable at times! It would be worth the "HORRID' taste to be able to walk or dance again." I will give it the month you suggested. Here's to no pain soon I hope! Thank you for sharing.

Going to bed now as I am having a difficult time keeping my eyes open now
