To Linda, Star, Vicki and everyone interested in “The Thin Commandments”

I am reading the book slowly so I can digest each new idea and think about it.

In the introduction the author talks about looking at your food history

 Here are my reflections on the subject of food history:
Not only in my own life, but in the lives of many women I’ve talked to, is a statement like this:

We are ______________________ and we express love with food and if you turn down food that someone has prepared, their feelings are hurt. You can fill in the blank with anything (Jewish, Asian, Italian, Greek, or any other racial, ethnic, or geographic group). So we keep on eating to please our families (sometimes when they aren’t even present)

Additionally, many of us learned about “the clean plate club” or “eat your food, children are starving in _________________”

Another part of my food history is all the different foods that I have never been able to eat in moderation.

 There is a lot more in the introduction which I’m sure will be addressed in greater detail in the body of the book.

Got everything ready to take Zoey (dog) to the nursing home to meet the director.. she wants me to commit a day and time to show up, but I can't do that, and the other facilities that I go to they don't ask me to do that.. I have to many things going on, and like the freedom of just showing up.. we shall see tomorrow morning.

In Chicago today it was nice, until about 7 PM, then it started thundering and lightening, we had some severe storms blow thru here, and there are still warnings...

Hope you all have a great evening..

Lorri, Linda Mc Cartney's home cooking is a book with 200 meatless meals , if that is what you are looking for. Very big seller and with 200 recipes, there must be some you will like. Try Amazon.com. She has other books too.

Thanks Star. I will look for it at the library.

Welcome to everyone who’s new. This is a wonderful bunch of women! Congrats to everyone who’s lost…and to everyone who continues to log their food even when they’re not losing. I’m proud of us all. :flowerforyou:

I’m back from a few days visiting my folks with my usual Bay Area 5 Pounds. I know some of it’s water weight and will be gone in a day but I’ll have to buckle down to lose the rest. Enough is enough already. :noway:

I’ve searched my soul trying to figure out the reason. I can put my finger on a couple of things.

 I’m in an environment where I’m not in control of the food. Ideally, I’d exercise my willpower (huh?) and turn away from the food I don’t want to eat. (Barbie, I have so much admiration for you for doing just that.) I’m not there yet.

 It’s hard not having alone time, particularly when my folks, much as I love them, seem to feel compelled to comment on almost everything I do, from “you don’t seem to be monitoring your food” to “you’re addicted to that computer.” Aargh. (I see those same tendencies in myself and, trust me, I’m workin’ on them. They are so annoying!)

So, what to do, what to do. As much as I hate to, I’m going to keep my visits a little shorter. My willpower does better in shorter stretches. Second, I’ll build in some alone time by going to the library, going for a walk, etc.

I wish, wish, wish I lived in the neighborhood. Then the visits wouldn’t be such a commitment. I could get together with my folks for an afternoon instead of four days. If wishes were horses, I’d have a fine herd. But…I like where I live and I can actually afford it (versus living in the Bay Area where the housing is still way out of sight).

Okay, ‘nuff about me. I’ve skimmed most of the posts and I'm thinking about you even if i can't send a quick hello.

Jackie, I’m very sorry about your mum. You provided such great care for her. I hope my kids will do the same for me some day.

Robin, For me, working was tough. Too many lunches out! I do great at home but still fall for the goodies when I’m visiting. The good thing (the very good thing) is that we can turn it around. For me, that takes about two days. Quite a difference from the miserable old days. You can do it! We can both do it!! In fact, by continuing to be here and participate, we ARE doing it!!!

Kackie, I’m glad you’re feeling better. I was worried about you. Congratulations on your forward progress! :flowerforyou:

Deborah, I hope JJ is doing better. Such a worry. He’s in my prayers.

Chiclet, hurray for your successful move and your new place. :drinker: It sounds charming. That Boo! :noway:

Dee, I’m so glad DGS is going to be fine.

Amanda, it’s so nice having you back!

    Morning ladies,
Up early today. could not go back to sleep after Kenneth left for work. Just a quick note about hot flashes. I have them not severe but aggravating still. I read somewhere that certain foods can trigger them. I have pinpointed the foods that trigger mine. Chocolate and salsa are two of my triggers. I have been avoiding caffeine this week and have had no flashes. I ate salsa at lunch yesterday and have had 2 in the past hour. Just a little fyi for some of you trying to avoid them. I also take a one a day multi vitamin for older women that has something in it to help with these. there is also a vitamin that you can get. i cant remember which one and dont want to guess but if you look in the vitamin section it tells you on the bottle that it helps with hot flashes. hope this helps some of you. Star you are so lucky not to have any symptoms. mine are not severe but still not fun. Have a good day ladies.

    Good Morning All,
Vicki I learned my triggers too, Caffine of course was a big one and yes salsa. I have an added glitch in that I'm taking an Femerra to prevent a recurance of Breast Cancer and it also increases the menepausal symptoms because it suppresses all estregine in my body. But the good new is I also had to go on Prozac to control my crazy side and that helps with hot flashes (hehehehe)

But seriously, I have noticed that either I'm getting use to it or there not as bad now. And yes I too take the multivitamin.

    Have a great day!

Hi Ladies!! It's so much fun keeping up with all of you!! I feel like I'm beginning to 'know' you girls.... :drinker:

Smwert – I’m trying to decide between joining a gym and joining Curves. Do you like it?

MacMadame – stay focused and motivated. I’ll be praying you find a job SOON!! :flowerforyou:

Faye – I loved reading your stories about Alaska… please don’t worry about not being able to stop. I’m going on an Alaskan cruise next May for my birthday. 7 days cruising and 4 days inland including Denali and Mt. McKinley. I’m SOOO looking forward to it.

VickyM – wow, we are all hoping that the rains STOPS :ohwell: and that the great swelling river goes DOWN SOON!!! I know that must be so scary. I can't imagine......

I finished Week 1 Day 3 of my C25K challenge this morning.... it was 72 degrees here at 6:30am!! I'm having a hard time with the running portion of it, so I might do week 1 over again just so my body can get used to 'running' before I step it up in week 2!

Have a WONDERFUL day ladies! :flowerforyou: I'm glad to know you! :flowerforyou:

Just checking in. I’m starting out my day on a good note again – a wonderful, big bowls of fruit – apples, oranges, and pineapple – with yogurt.

I’ve found two brands of yogurt I really, really like. For me, they beat even Fage by a long shot. I get both of them at the Middle Eastern store in Folsom. If you haven’t liked yogurt before, you might give these a try. Same calories as a glass of milk yet you feel as though you’ve eaten something substantial.

My faves are Byblos and Arz, both from whole milk. (I splurge on the calories because they’re so good. Sometimes I go for nonfat if I know I’m going to want to eat more of something else.) Byblos is a little tart but has a lovely, creamy texture. Arz is creamy too but tastes more like cream without much tartness.

When I can and if they’re open, I take a look at everyone’s food diaries. It’s so nice to see how many women on here are making really good, healthy choices.:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: (My mom, who knows , says the right (correct  ) word is “healthful,” not “healthy,” when it comes to how you eat. I try, but I just can't do it today. )

To all you ladies with the hot flashes/flushes, getting rid of those and all the other menopause symptoms (well, most of them) is the best news about getting older. There is a silver lining!!

Time to finish up my big bowl of fruit and get out in the sunshine for a walk. You may have noticed that I like to eat! When the grams go up, my weight tends to go down. You know all those people who said it’s about moderation? ‘Taint true. :noway: You can eat as much as you like then eat some more, as long as you’re eating the right foods.

BTW, I took Izzy to the vet Monday. I thought maybe she had something in her ear because she kept scratching it. Apparently, she has allergies. Urgh. She’s taking Benadryl now and she's better but she might need something stronger. I’m going to give her a bath with hypoallergenic shampoo today to see if that helps. It’s like having a child! (That’s the good news as well as the bad news.)

Ah hah! My mom was wrong (incorrect that is). After bringing up "healthful" vs "healthy" I went to the dictionary. Should have done that first. Here's what the online dictionary has to say (thefreedictionary.com):

The distinction in meaning between healthy ("possessing good health") and healthful ("conducive to good health") was ascribed to the two terms only as late as the 1880s. This distinction, though tenaciously supported by some critics, is belied by citational evidence.

Healthy has been used to mean "healthful" since the 16th century. Use of healthy in this sense is to be found in the works of many distinguished writers, with this example from John Locke being typical: "Gardening . . . and working in wood, are fit and healthy recreations for a man of study or business."

Therefore, both healthy and healthful are correct in these contexts: a healthy climate, a healthful climate; a healthful diet, a healthy diet.

I can't wait to call my mom!

    Good afternoon all,

Have had a good day so far. Did the Leslie Sansone fast 3 mile walk this morning. Didn't have to water the garden since we are having a rainy day here in NC.

Had my husband take a couple of pics of me so I can look at my success in the future. And no I won't be posting them on the Success Topic page.

Had grilled chicken and stir fried (in grape seed oil) veggies. I used some Chinese 5 spice on them and won't be doing that again. We didn't like that too much. Some rice on the side. (We eat our dinner meal at lunch since Eric works 2nd shift which I actually like since it means I'm not eating anything heavy and then going to bed.)

We ran errands, me to the library and hubby to the tax office. Since it is raining here I might just start reading one of the books I got. I also found a "Belly Dancing for Whimps" DVD. I'll let you know if it is any good or not, just thought I would try it to see if it is another good way to get moving. Eric was in the living room this morning watching me do the Leslie Sansone and I'm sure he be in there when I break this one out.

I hope you all have a good successful day.

    :flowerforyou: Hi Gang!! .....
A quick nip in here this evening ....while DH is preparing the dessert!

:noway: I did post the other night but as so often happens with me ....it disappeared into the ether!!
Anyway .......for almost 2 weeks now i've been very careful not to eat carbs. I feel good and feel thinner but so far the loss is 5lb.
    Watch this space eh!!!

Exercise wise I'm just adding in my cleaning jobs.
 This mornings client is a sad reminder of my mum really. Both in their 80's the wife has alzheimers and while she's away at the day centre I pop in and clean for them. Poor guy ...he's struggling. His wife is no longer the loving wife of 60 years but is angry and a stranger. At least when he talks to me I can relate to what he's going through.

I had an extra relief job too this afternoon. A house with 3 teenage boys. The lady of the house is recovering from cancer and is unable to lift etc so the house is a bit untidy. But ........I opened one of the boys bedroom doors ......managed to push the hoover in a short way and then retreated!! Beaten before I had a chance, so to speak!! as I didn't have time to tidy further!! I sympathise having two sons myself!! At least the main house was cleaned for her!
 Anyway ............tomorrow I have a day off. What to do? ...don't have plans yet.
    Take care everyone

    Popping in to say hello...
had #2 physical Therapy appt for the "frozen shoulder" problem ...made some small improvement from last week...have more exercises to add to my routine.

On day 4 of Cycle 1 in the 17 Day diet...been doing really well. I eat plenty of veggies and really love the control with this diary planning tool.

This was my weight about this time last year so now to me the real fun starts...I have gotten rid of the winter poundage and now start heading toward my first goal of 160 ....I have moved on the BMI scale out of Obese and into Overweight. LOL

My MD will be shocked at my next visit in Sept. can't wait to see their faces. Maybe the blood pressure med will be decreased by then too.

I am so done with being overweight and feel so good already with this first 15 pounds gone...just imagining being at goal and finally staying there...NOT reverting to old ways.

I hope every one has a good day.

    Good afternoon ladies

I have been skimming the posts and a few of you have mentioned the 17 day diet. I picked up the book but haven't begun yet because I got stopped cold by the notion of replacing my beloved morning coffee with green tea. Have any of you done it without giving up coffee? Or how difficult was it to give up the 'morning jo'?

Barbiecat - Thanks for asking about the kids. I am still very busy with them but happily so. Jordan just finished his first year of University on his way to hopefully getting his doctorate in Psychology/Philosophy. So, lucky guy has about 8-9 years of schooling to go! No retirement for this mom:laugh: My darling little (5'11") girl is just finishing up grade 10. She is very into humanitarian things and volunteers her heart out. Not so much a great student but all-in-all a great person. As far as the husband - well we'll just talk about him another day when I get over my mad spell with him:tongue:

    Take care all

    Good afternoon ladies,
Heather so good to hear from you. Wow your son has lots of drive. Your daughter sounds lovely. I believe when my Heather did 17 day diet she drank her coffee. I did not give up my regular tea. I drank the green tea at times but not always. I did well on the first cycle but not good on other cycles. I reapeated first cycle and lost some more. It was good for me to get rid of cravings and jumpstart my success. I believe Natalie is having same problem. Hopefully it will work for you. I will close for now. will check in later.

Hi everyone! I am relatively new here, and this is my first day on the message board. I have been using the mobile app for a month now and have started to see the weight come off. I am mostly doing it for health reasons, but also because I finally decided that I have the power to control myself. The process has actually been fun so far, and I have even motivated myself to get up and do a mile in the am at 4:45 before I go to school. I teach high school English and Creattive Writing.

Anyways, the doctor said that he would put me on diabetic meds if I didn't get it together. (Actually, he was a little nicer than that.) I don't want that! I also have a glucose meter on my cell phone that helps me keep track of how I am doing there.

I think that the planets must have aligned last month because of getting yelled at by the doctor, upgrading to a smart phone, finding some amazing work out videos, and figuring out how to use Comcast on Demand Exercise TV. I have also been subscribed to Saving Dinner menus which are amazing and come into my e-mail every week.

So I have all the tools, but I might need a little motivation from time to time. Looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Hmm, I posted this morning and it disappeared ... not sure what happened.

I had a lovely call from my oldest and 'bestest' friend this morning. She's an Aussie and lives in Adelaide. Anyway, she's coming over next month for five weeks. I'm really excited - especially as I haven't seen her since our wedding which was in 2008. Last time I saw her was when I dropped her and her partner at Heathrow airport.

Phone calls like that are a great pick up. We've been friends for nearly 30 years and we can go for years without seeing each other and when we meet up can start our conversation with 'and furthermore ..... ' as though we've only been away for a moment.

My darling grandbaby has his bandages off his hand now and it's looking good. Still raw and a little shiny skinned where he had the skin graft, but it will be fine. He sees the specialist again next Monday to find out when he will have his next surgery.

DD has given me the job of designing and creating the invitations for the twins christening, which will keep me busy for a while.

Time for bed now. Speak to you soon.

    Love
    Amanda x

Welcome tchmrsd! Glad to have you here. Some of us have been here a long time and others are pretty new. Me, I'm one of those who lost her way and is now back to get at it again. I'm glad you are having good success so far. Just keep at it. Keeping a food journal and staying with in your calories range will help more than you realize.

I am on day 12 of cycle 2 of the 17 day diet...
Heather, it works, but you have to be patient, you will lose LOTS the 1st cycle, I am on the 2nd cycle, and did not lose anything the 1st 8 days of it, I don't know about the rest of it, I stopped weighing myself, and will weigh next Monday.. drum roll..........
I will let you know then. My clothes are fitting looser... and I feel good... it's an easy diet to follow, I ride my bike outside for 30 mintues most days... (not today, rain), I shouild go down in the basement and ride the stationary bike...

    Have a good evening...

    Hello,
It has been a beautiful day here. I got a few things done on my TO DO list (that list just gets bigger and bigger). We tried a new chicken and eggplant recipe for dinner (I put it in MFP) ...it was a nice change with lots of fresh veggies. I went to the gym at lunch time today and it was pretty crowded. I didn't get to one machine in my circuit. I found that I had a "real " coffee this morning and I don't know if that made my heart racy but I was monitoring throughout the workout. I was registering high heart beats....I'll have to see if that repeats. It was warm in the gym today... or it could have been the caffiene.

Faye…..so glad that you have had Newfs in your life too. I can’t imagine a Newf in Florida…that a tough one! They are wonderful dogs. I can just picture the couch scenario! I am also trying to stay positive with my scale saga. Thanks for your words…I do feel better. It’s interesting to think about zigzagging calories—I think that could make sense.

Mimi….It sounds like you really have a good handle on what to do when you visit your parents. Just thinking through those situations and writing down what you are aware of is a great piece of information.

Tchmrsd…Welcome…this is a great place for motivation!

    Have a great night.
