if someone has a picture of their butt (clothed, underwear), a practically nude picture, or something along those lines? I am not saying that I think it is inappropriate, because I really don't. But I am curious about other peoples opinions.
Personally, those pictures don't bother me at all, except when people post them for the sole purpose of thumbing their noses at the forum rules and are trying to see how far they can push the envelope. I think that's just childish and silly.

^^This, is where I stand. I find trends like b00bie or b00tie Friday to be utterly ridiculous. I don't care about people's particular assets (mine are plenty), but when people choose to post photos of their breasts and butts simply to give an eff-you to this web site and the people who work so hard to maintain it, then I would prefer that those users would take their disrespect and calorie counting somewhere else. Nude bodies and partially clothed bodies do not offend me, but that doesn't mean that this site is the place to post your MySpace-ready, soft p0rn photos.

The creators of this site are happy to give us a place to share our stories and cheer for each other's success. But if you need people to see everything in order to feel like your journey was worth it, then you need to do some serious internal work and get in touch with who you are. There simply aren't enough compliments to fill that kind of emptiness.

That is why I wholeheartedly disagree with those who are saying that posting an underwear pic takes confidence. I think it shows a complete lack of confidence. I have seen users with absolutely amazing bodies who manage to show off their hard work without a single image in their underwear. When you know that you have worked hard and your results show, you do not have to show everything in a desperate hunt for compliments.

    ^^This.

As long as it's no more than I'd see at my local swimming pool, I don't have a problem with it.

    I agree!

Personally I think it is petty to say that somebody shouldnt post pics of themselves in underwear. Its whatever floats your boats. Im not about to parade around in raunchy undies my pics were a genuine plain undie ones for the purpose of motivation for myself and to be able to compare at a mid-point and end point.

Im assuming there may be some other pics that people may have disliked for some other reason from reading the posts but I dont know what your talking about being a new member,

Plain underwear pics are no different in my opinion to a bikini etc and I think that if people are offended by them then they should not look!

Just for the record, nothing any of my friends that participated in was done as an eff you to the site owners or the rules but in response to those profile police that feel compelled to on their own send messages condemning a pic someone had.
It seems now that has moved beyond sending PMs and instead complaining to the site owners/staff.
To click on a profile and gripe about pics there to me is just weird and those that have need to be told to get a life (my opinion) but in our society today any perceived offense must be alleviated I guess. :ohwell:

People should understand what MFP is and is not.

It is a privately owned site with rules, last I checked none declaring only a shoulders up pic so as no one can sense anything remotely sexual.
It is also a business enterprise for the owners, not demeaning their desire to help people get fit in any way but also recognizing it is a way to pay the bills of life.

It is not a church or a cult that demands strict adherence to a code of morality, accept that some folks feel different about things and live and let live...so much easier that way.

No one is forced to be here,no one is forced to use the forums or have friends.
There are tools to be used, various topics to read and respond to.
Make it what is fun and best for you! :drinker:

I stand with Carl and his statement about his/our friends intentions pertaining to their thinking and stand in solidarity with them.

This is my personal opinion, and has nothing to do with being a mod - as a mod, I enforce the rules set out by Mike and Al, as that's what I've been tasked with doing.

But my opinion is this: There is a reason for the rules they've set in place. They've attempted to create a supportive, open community that assists people in reaching their health and fitness goals. The site age limit is 18. So why should the rules be PG-13?

Well, because in any community (society, group, etc) there must be compromise. Otherwise, groups don't work. The simple fact is, you will never find a group of more than 2 or 3 people who agree on EVERYthing and all have the same ideals, values, mores, and experiences. So when you have a group of people, there will be varying opinions and desires. To make the group functional, there has to be some sort of consensus and compromise for how each person in the group behaves and contributes to the group. Some people will want one thing, some will want another. You either find a compromise that everyone can live with - or the group disintegrates.

There are people from all walks of life, all ages, all religious and political views, on MFP. It would be great if "live and let live" worked... But it doesn't. Just as some of you are offended by religious discussion, others are offended by swearing or risque pics or bad attititudes or ads or whatever. The forum rules were created out of the desire to keep the community from becoming one of those sites where fighting, drama, gossip, attacks and negativity are rampant. I've been on sites like that. They suck. And that environment is certainly not conducive to helping people overcome their personal demons.

Do I have a personal problem with some of the risque pics - eh... there are some I don't find attractive, but I wouldn't say they bother me. I have risque pics of my own. Do I think this is the proper arena to display them? No. That's not what I'm here for. I don't think there's any great benefit from displaying those kinds of pics. And no, we're not talking about simple before/after underwear pics. There's a difference between standing in front of a mirror in undies and taking a progress pic --- and laying on your bed with your legs spread or shoving your tatas out and baring everything but the nipple or pulling your thong up your crotch and sitting on the camera. The point being that without rules there will always be someone to push the envelope. Someone who doesn't know where that line is.

Since I know there are 70 yr old ladies on here (hello, that's someone's grandma), or people who find a certain style of photo offensive, then compromises can be made for them. Just as there are compromises made for lots of other things, like no religious discussion or no ads. I think it comes down to having a little bit of respect for other people and making some accommodations for the benefit of the group. Personally, I think the rules are pretty reasonable and go a long way toward keeping this site a place I want to be on and interact with people. Not because I'm offended by pics... But because compromise keeps the community from turning into a negative and destructive environment.

ETA: Wow, that ended up way longer than I intended (as usual :ohwell: ) Sorry.

I don't have an issue with it because basically i could give a rats *kitten* what anyone else does as long as they are not hurting anyone. That being said I would do it myself because any photo on this site can be saved and reused by someone else and I would not like to have a half naked photo of myself on some other site. This is why I never share photos of my kids or my formerly pregnant belly online.

Guys seem to only want to "show off" their arms, chest, maybe legs... Some women seem to think the only thing they have to show off is tatas or butt. Have yet to see a guy have a pic of his butt in a speedo or a crotch shot of...well, you get the idea.

I could care less- I have bigger issues and ones that actually effect my life than what some person wants to use as their profile pic or what types of pics they choose for their success story. I don't need adults telling other adults what they can and can't post to either 1- show off their success or 2- what they even want to gain attention for. Really, does it effect YOUR life in anyway? If you answered yes to that question, you may need to stay away from the computer for awhile

Agreed!!! lol I personally wouldnt post underwear pics, but i would post bikini pics when i get to the point of wearing one. I took underwear pics for myself for motivation to lose weight.. Not for everyone else. But, im saying this at 285.4lbs...if i get down to my goal of 145.. I may have gained a little more confidence and would say what the heck! Ill post a pic of my boy shorts and bra. lol

I'm not the one who decides what is deemed sexually suggestive - talk to society about that one. Personally I find it silly that men's chests aren't sexually suggestive but womens' are... but that's how society works. Social norms and values are a complex thing. But they change... a little over a hundred years ago, ankles were sexually suggestive. In some cultures, feet are. Depends on the cultural norms and MFP didn't decide that. lol

ETA: Actually, personality is the #1 thing I've seen listed in those threads. But also, women will say butt or other areas too... But guys don't tailor their pics to what women want to see. That's another societal issue (sexual perceptions, attitudes, etc.)

Let me clarify. I was referriing to the young woman who took a picture of herself in her underwear 6 months, a year, 2 years ago..

If you look at her face you will see a "I will never do this anyway, so what the heck" look in her eyes.

She has tried before. She does not believe in herself. Diets have failed time and time again. She does not love herself and her confidence is shot.

Then she makes it! Loses 20-40-50-100 pounds and is amazed!! "LOOK I DID IT!" her face says. All she has is the undie before picture and I say

    BRAVO!!!

I would beg to differ on the point that guys don`t post pics designed to (hopefully) appeal to the opposite sex...to suggest otherwise IMO is just silly.

I get the societal things and understand,my somewhat veiled point was that maybe some of the folks that fuss are not all that even handed and they are the ones who need to be told to chill out rather then be coddled.

I think posting a picture of yourself in your underwear is more than a little weird. It's called UNDERwear for a reason. I realize that a bra shows no more than a bikini top, but my personal opinion is that the bikini top is ok, but the bra is not. I can't really give you a rational reason. That is just how I feel. When I see a post of someone in their underwear, it does not BOTHER me. I just wouldn't do it myself.

Oh, I'm not saying men don't consider that aspect at all... but not in the same way that women do. Think about it... A half naked chick spread out on a car (or with a beer, or riding a lawnmower...a sexy woman can be/is used for advertising for anything).... How many times have you seen a half naked guy draped over a dishwasher or in the kitchen using a blender in an ad? Pretty few and far between.

And, I'll add... you have NO idea how many reports/complaints we DO dismiss because someone is being overly sensitive. That's the point - you only know about the things that get deleted... you don't see the ones that we say "hmm there's nothing wrong with that pic". There's lots of compromise.
  • I don't want to see genitals or a butt that's not covered by underwear. Everything else is fine with me - I mean, I see bare chests and breasts and backs and stomachs and thighs, and butts with the same amount of coverage as underwear offers at the beach, and that doesn't bother me, so why would I be fussed about the same things in a photo? However, while I have no issue with nudity (aside from what I mentioned in the first sentence), I *am* creeped out by photos that are sexually tinged. I don't mind seeing your chest, but if your hand's positioned as if you're stroking it sensually in the photo, gross and inappropriate.

I guess for me it's a matter of taste and appropriateness. I'm a pretty open person and I think the human body is beautiful, and sexuality is a great thing. But there are still some things my 7 yr old son shouldn't see... and if he shouldn't see it, I surely wouldn't post it here (cause any pic posted on the net is available in some way forever...did you know that?)

Okay, I have read this post twice, three times maybe, and I have shyed away from posting, cause I don't want to start any trouble, or get in any trouble, but I am going to give my honest opinion.

This site does have rules, and sure, you have to follow them as a member of the MFP community. Now, some people know, I have been a boundry pusher and a rule breaker on here, in the name of fun, and it has got me in a lil hot water with the mods and owners of the site. Controversial topics and posts that incite bad behavior have been my downfall, but I did it for like minded people that all run in the same group of friends as I do, and we all being open-minded saw no problem with this.

As with "b00bie or b00tie" friday, shoulder pics, lip pics, chest pics leg pics<---(see avatar) why, was it flirty, yeah, was it a fun thing to do with friends, yeah, and we did have fun with it. Now, I don't condone nakedness on the site, or gross representation of ones self, I do not see any problem with a guy or a gal, showing what they have worked hard for. If the worked really hard on their gluteus maximus, and want to show it off in a pair of undies, as long as it is tasteful(boy shorts, bikini bottoms, so on) then I stand up and applaud them, this goes for men and women, I may not comment on everything, but I will applaud them. If they would like to show a legs pic, a chest pic, what have you, as to the success and what they have worked on, again, I applaud them. Are the naughty bits covered?? If they are, and they put it in an avatar or profile pic, I see no harm.

Again, I know there are rules, and I am trying hard to follow them, I really am, so I am not going to try to fuel an arguement or anything. I have a legs pic and a chest pic on my profile. Something this guy would have never done, 50 lbs ago, or before I joined this site. I still am not that happy with how I appear all together. However, the responses I got after posting those pics, from both men and women, on how great of a job I have done, really boosted my ego and self-confidence. I believe that is what this is here for.

To sum up what I have rambled on about, I do not find pics that I have mentioned, inappropiate as long as they are done tastefully, and the naughty bits are covered, like you would see at a pool or a beach.

If the worked really hard on there gluteus maximus, and want to show it off in a pair of undies, as long as it is tasteful(boy shorts, bikini bottoms, so on) then I stand up and applaud them, this goes for men and women, I may not comment on everything, but I will applaud them.

To sum up what I have rambled on about, I do not find pics that I have mentioned inappropiate as long as they are done tastefully, and the naughty bits are covered, like you would see at a pool or a beach.

    *APPLAUSE*
Well said B.. agree with you completely! I have trouble writing a Post It so thank you for posting this! Totally sums up what was in my head!
  • This is my personal opinion, and has nothing to do with being a mod - as a mod, I enforce the rules set out by Mike and Al, as that's what I've been tasked with doing.

This is really well said and written.
