So... with winter fast approaching and 5K options dwindling in the area, what do you guys do to keep motivated during the off-season months? I'm going to miss 5Ks, because it gave me something to train for.....

Ariel - I know how those in between workouts go. I thought I was going to be fine doing 30DS because of my C25k training, and strength training...but it kicked my a**. I'd say butt, but it was beyond that. I also tried the Yoga Meltdown, I only made it halfway through & thought I was going to die! Oh well, I'll get there eventually. Good job in increasing your speed...I still plod at my steady 4.6 run. I plan on increasing once I finish.

Sweet Princess - Yeah, running in the snow might be a bit too much! Running indoors (in circles) is also quite boring. I remember doing that for gym in Colorado in December because we couldn't go outside! It was tedious!

J - You go girl! Lol, one day I'll do 4 miles for fun. Right now I can only do about 2 for fun! Maybe it would be different if I was outside!

Well, for me, I finally conquered week 7, day 1. But I thought I was going to die those last 5 minutes. I hit that wall hard! But, I made it. I'm also seeing where my training slacking is killing me, as my endurance is down, and my heart rate just wouldn't go down like usual. Gives me new determination! Today, I did some speed training on the elliptical, and hope if I keep doing that in between, that might help! I basically did 2 miles...each lap I did an "easy" pace for half, and "sprinted" the last half. I was soaked, but it felt good!

2 NSVs + 1 SV to report! Well, 1 NSV isn't mine. My little guy took his first steps yesterday! I was so proud of him! And he seemed proud too, he was laughing and jumping...it was soooo cute! As for my NSV, I fit in a pair of pants that I couldn't button last month, now they fit! And the SV, I hit another mini-goal...190 this morning! Today ROCKS!

    Keep on Truckin' ladies!

I wonder where Mom (Brendalyne) has gone?

linbee- fabulous job on the weight loss! it feels awesome to pull on a pair of jeans that didn't fit before! i am so proud of you for getting through week 7-day 1! it's awesome that you could push yourself, even when you felt like dying! INCREDIBLE! i commend you!

i haven't heard from brendalyne. i sent her a message yesterday, so i'm hoping to hear from her soon. i wonder if her computer went down or something?

shannon- i'm sure hoping to get a treadmill before the hard winter sets in. if not, barring ice, i'll probably buy warm running clothes and a balaclava for my face and get out there anyway! :-) i don't want to lose all i've worked so hard for!

j - yeah i'm definitely hoping the cardio part of 30ds doesn't exhaust me but i definitely think i'm gonna get my butt kicked by jillian on the strength training part - especially my abs and arms lol! btw if you're out running in snow and ice this winter i'm gonna qualify that as "beast-mode" for sure, you go girl. rock it out lol.

shannon - i'm with you there, i would like to look into running a 5k for the first time but with winter here creeping up so fast i know i probably won't do it till spring / maybe consider a treadmill and possibly bridge to 10k if you want something specific to follow or do in the off season?

linbee - i definitely feel like i have a couple of days (or a week!! lol) of total soreness after starting 30ds, but seeing some of the success pictures from other people doing it really motivates me. i totally was going to increase my speed running but then i realized i was running 8 min at a time rather than 5 like the previous day!! i just stuck it at 5mph and went with it - i'll try and increase my speed once i'm running long time frames bc i think i'm being overambitious. incredible job on the pants NSV and on your lil' man walking!!! that's awesome, now once he really gets the hang of it you'll just have to worry about him getting into everything LOL!! :)

my w5d2 went ok, except i used another treadmill than i usually do and at first i'm pretty sure it took my weight wrong bc my cals were goin up so fast and it seemed off - then out of nowhere about 11 minutes in, the treadmill just stopped ?! i was about 6 min into the first 8 min run and it threw me off COMPLETELY. i was so mad!! but then of course "my" treadmill opened up by then... and i'm so OCD that i had to start over at that point and re-did it starting at the beginning warm up walk. it was definitely rough, felt like death that last 8 min but pushed thru it. never again will i stray from "my" beloved treadmill LOL.

toque- i can't wait to hear how week 5 day 3 went!

i went out for a run this morning and thought i was going die! it was cold and my muscles were tight. the dirt road was still wet from yesterday's rain and i felt like i was running on sand. it must have been my body rebelling because my heart rate was only in the high 150s. i usually force myself to keep going for 15 minutes because it usually gets better, but it didn't! finally around 25 or 30 minutes i started feeling stronger. i have no idea what was going on, but i was just plain drained! i guess adding the shred back in on my off days might not be such a great idea for me? maybe i'll try to incorporate the strength moves without all the extra cardio?

    how's everyone else doing???

J - It was absolutely incredible!!! I can't believe that I actually did it. I had to cover up the time and I absolutely refused to look down at it because I knew if I looked down there'd be like 10 minutes left or something and I'd be so frustrated and beat. So finally when I couldn't wait anymore I looked down and I only had a minute and 15 sec left until the cool down!!! I just stayed at 5mph the entire run and it felt amazing! I literally burst into laughter after I started walking because I couldn't believe I'd done it.

It was so hardddd at Week 1 - I'm really happy with this.
Sorry to hear you were feeling so tired during your run - I can't imagine the cold/wet made it any easier - still kudos to you girl for running in that kind of weather/elements. Hopefully the shred won't wear me out too much to affect my running because I'm really into this program right now... Starting 30ds tomorrow so we'll see.

seems like everyone else is pretty busy right now! hope everything is going great for everyone! :)
  • Hey all! Wayyy to go on all the good work! Remember when I said I was going to log in more???? Well.... clearly didn't happen as I planned. Oh well! New week to try again :)

I'm going to do the big 20 minute run today - kind of nervous. I can do it....right??? I have been doing lots of other kinds of workouts too. Now that school is back in session I have access to all the free classes at the gym. I really love going to zumba and am trying to go twice a week. It makes a little harder to squeeze in my runs but at least I'm being active every day.

Great job to those of you doing the 30 Day Shred on your "off" days. That is one hard workout!

    Have a great week all!!!

You have TOTALLY got this 20 min run - The advice I got was "DON'T LOOK AT THE TIME!!" and it was the best advice ever. It did seem long but when I finally looked at the time and realized I only had a minute & 15 sec left thats when I started feeling out of breath and like i may fall over and before i had looked, i felt just fine - I overthought it at the end lol. :)

You can definitely do it!! :)

Mizzladylisa - I know what you mean! I can't seem to get past week 7 myself! But you got this, you can do it!

Well, I finally completed week 7, day 2. I tried Monday night, but failed! Lol. Ended up doing more walk / run intervals. In my defense I was so tired from work, and TOM came to visit. But, I knocked it out this morning. Despite doing 30DS last night, and being totally sore! I am stuck on week 7, but I am determined to get through this. *sigh*

for those of you who are doing the 30 day shred AND running, don't stress about not being able to get through... even now, when i do running one day and shred the next, by the time the week is over, my body feels BEAT UP! i, for one, need a rest day here and there. don't give up, but be careful that you're not pushing yourself too hard. i think i'm going to ditch the shred for now and just focus on static strength training without the extra cardio. that seems to make all the difference in the world!

if i sign up, the 5k pumpkin run is october 30! as nasty as the weather has been, i'm fearing the worst.... i don't want to run in 30s or 40s with rain! iiiiiccccccckkkkkkkkkkyyyyyyy!

keep up the great work everyone!

    brendalyne, we miss you!!!

Phew, back after being sick for like a whole damn week lol. Ran on Monday of this past week but then didn't run at all for the rest of the week.. Going to repeat Week 6 starting tomorrow, hope I still got this lol.

J - I gotta agree with the 30ds comment, it is REALLY rough to do both, I feel like - I was totally beat when I was doing them both before I got sick.

Miss everyone! <3 Hope you're all doing ok!

Started today on week 3 c25k on the road. Idone it nearly 3x over with the distance i wanted to go and my legs felt great. Think I might do week3 a few times over though just to build it up. I was really tempted to keep running but i didn't want to push to much incase i get the usual leg pain. Quite pleased though. 1 hour and 10 mins for 5 miles. I've done the 5 mile route before in 56 mins but i really paid for it. So far so good.

Jenny-You should go for the 10k, I'll cheer you on from here. Even if you have to go to walking intervals eventually it would be an amazing feeling just finishing the race.

Wonder where Brendalyne has gone. Missing hearing her comments and seeing how she is getting on too.:flowerforyou:

Soooo, I'm back on the wagon after dealing with severe sinus issues and out of town work conferences for almost 2 weeks. I really wanted to go out and run but everyone kept telling me to take it easy and get better. I was finally able to do a run/walk for 5 miles along with c25k and I felt GREAT! I can't believe I how much I was looking forward to running again.

I've been reading all the past posts and I have to say that you guys are sooooo motivating!!!

well, it's official... i won't be running the 5k pumpkin run that i intended to run this sunday- because i'm running the 10k instead!

i have only been running 4 miles 3-4 times a week, but i thought i'd give 10k a try yesterday just to see if i could do it. i'm thrilled to report that I DID IT! I RAN 10K!!! three or four months ago i couldn't run much more than 60 seconds at a time and yesterday i ran 6.2 miles! (1:10:40) :glasses:

keep up the great work everyone! :drinker:

he definitely is -- he started week 2 yesterday. i think he felt a little frustrated but hes running at like 6mph/7mph lol. he gave me the "i dont know if i can do this" speech and i was like listen - you know how totally frustrated and how much i felt like death when i first started and now i am running for anywhere from 5-20 minutes!! lol. it was rough going back to the gym after a week off from being sick but hey j, i'm like SOOOOO proud of you for deciding to run the 10k. girl you're a beast!!! cant wait till i have to decide between a 5k and 10k lmao!

    total inspiration!!!!

I'm on Week 5 of my 5K training plan. I got a little away from it when I did my 5K race a few weeks ago, but now I'm back. I've decided to continue the 5K training, but also mix in Adventure Race training. I've decided to do a 5K obstacle course race. This is one located near me:

    Everyone is doing awesome!

    J - Good luck on the 10k, I know you'll do great.

Toque - Glad you are feeling better! Keep Chill on track, girl! Lol, I'm still running at 4.6 speed on TM, so you guys are doing awesome...I am so slow..

Mizzlady - You go girl! You're gonna pass me, I know it!

Sweet - Adventure Race training sounds fun! Good luck!

Well, I finally finished week 7 up on Monday. I actually decided to go my own pace, and not use the C25k app. I just used the timer on the TM. Well, I actually managed to run 27 minutes! I am soooo happy. Week 7 almost beat me. But I'm ready for week 8, and I know I can do it. I think I'm going to stop using the app, and go my own way, and use the app to record only. I meant to go to the gym yesterday and this morning, but got side tracked by the little guy (he was just too cute, I had to roll around on the floor with him last night), and an intense cleaning of my study this morning. Hey, I figure I broke a sweat, I'm doing alright. Besides, the clutter was causing me MAJOR stress, so I decided to purge it. It's funny when we start losing weight from our bodies, we want to lose "weight" in other areas of our lives...Anyway, enough of me!

    Keep on truckin'!!!!

DID W6D3 - ran for 25 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! insane. totally insane.

i even looked down with 6 minutes to go and actually was able to finish it without feeling like i may die. usually if i look at the time i starts to feel impossible and i feel like i'll pass out or throw up or something but today it felt doable.

really looking forward to week 7 - glad to hear everyone is doing so well!!! really proud of all you race-runners, can't wait till i can do that too!!

well, i did it! i finished the 10k! 1:04.15 wa-hooo! hunky hubby and i started out in the back of the pack, but as time went on we finally got past the walkers and slower runners and were able to get into a groove. i can't believe how much harder i was able to push myself for the race! when i run at home my average heart rate usually hangs around in the 160s, but i saw quite a few 180s and the last half mile it was at 192! wow! our race was time chipped, but as far as i know they started the whole group of runners and walkers in one giant unorganized blob and our time apparently started immediately, even though we weren't able to move right away.

the highlights of my day were: 1) racing with "gumby" (you know, the green bendy guy...) 2) racing with a banana and a sock monkey 3) running 7 minutes faster than the 6.2 i ran at home!!!!!!! 4) getting crazy looks from other runners when i looked at hubby at the giant hill and shouted, "HILL SPRINTS! GO!" (and passing people on the hill) 5) finishing, of course! :-)

keep running everyone, i went from c210k! if i can do it, so can you! :glasses:
  • Hi guys!!! OMG I have been soooo MIA! I am so impressed by all the fabulous progress. I didn't have time to read back through everything but I did notice that J-Courtier ran a 10K, that's amazing!!!

I just finished up W6D1 and it felt pretty good. I got a little tired with 2 minutes to go but that's to be expected. School is sooooooo crazy for me, I'm kind of in "survival" mode. I'm am doing pretty well with planning ahead for healthy meals but really struggling to squeeze in exercise. It is hard to find the energy/time. But, I so loving the way I feel after a run which is of course the best motivation of all!

Keep up the good work everyone!

Yip still doing 5k regular on treadmill as it's cold and wet outside. (I'm a dry weather runner lol.) I do get outside sometimes if it's dry but still find it hard on the road. Hopefully next spring/summer i might find somewhere to do trails. You're doing fab though Jenny.
