Wow this thread has been busy this weekend! I didn't log in but I did finish W3 up this weekend. I'll be doing W4D1 tomorrow - not sure if I'll do treadmill or outside? I'm hoping for nice weather so I can continue outside for as long as possible.

J - I was just thinking that about the timing. I run so slow. I was looking at the coolrunning calculations for distance. You are supposed to be doing a 10 min mile if you go by those distances. I'm a bit off. I was starting to feel bad, but then I saw what you said, and I thought about it. I have not run for 20 min straight or 1 1/2 miles in my entire life! But I did. So there...I'll work on speeding up when I'm more comfortable running.
ariel - I find that if I eat too soon before, I don't get a stitch, but I start feeling nauceous. I find that if I eat about 2 hours before, and something small, it's alright. Or just go on an empty stomach. And breathing definitely helps! I tried breathing only through my nose...yeah, that didn't work out. So I breathe through my nose and mouth, and that helps.
I like the Wimps 2 Warriors name, has a nice ring. I'm not so good at that, but if I think of anything, I'll suggest it.
Good work everyone! Wow, we are getting it DONE! Lol.
As for myself, finally finished week 5, day 3 on Friday. The first 5 minutes, and the last 2 were the hardest. But the middle wasn't so bad. I got in a groove and just went with it. But let me say, I almost cried in the middle of the gym when I finished! I felt so great that I finished it. On day 2, I didn't make it all the way through the 2nd 8 minutes, I had to walk for about 30 seconds (which I tacked on to the end), and was so disappointed. Didn't think I could do the 20. But I did! I'm hoping to do week 6, day 1 today...I so slacked this weekend. I justify it by realizing I needed to rest, so I did. I did a pretty intense strenght training right after my 20 minutes, so I was a bit sore. Besides...I'm on the Biggest Loser week timetable.0 -
linbee - Awww....I cry at the drop of a hat, so I understand how emotional and wonderful it had to be for you to get through the entire 20 minutes! HUGS!! And there's nothing wrong with the "Biggest Loser week timetable"! (For those of you who may have missed the comment - on the Biggest Loser, a "week" isn't necessarily 7 days. I read that it could be a 10-14 day time period!)0

YES! I did my 40 minutes and ended up with a BP for my mile. 14:16!! That's SO much better than my mile during the 5K in the spring.... 16:28.*really happy*"

Hi guys, not posted in for a while but still been checking up on you all and you're all doing fab.
Well a friend of mine called last week and asked if I would accompany her on a half marathon next April. She must've got me at a good time because I said YES. To 13.1 miles in hilly Edinburgh. I must be crazy.
Anyway I looked up some half marathon training. Jeff Galloway popped up. Yesterday I had an hour in the gym before aerobics so hopped up on the treadmill. I ran two and half minutes at 9.8kph and walked 1 minute at 7kph and before I knew it in my hour I had gotten up to 9km. You have no idea how I felt apart from pooped, I was ecstatic. On such a high I still done the aerobics.
Still gona have to try it outside though, I think it's much harder to run outdoors than the treadmill.0 -
mag- 13.1 miles! yikes!:ohwell: i can't even think about that right now! i'd have to run with duct tape so they could put me back together again! having said that, there's nothing you can't do when you put in some training and a lot of dedication! GO YOU!:flowerforyou:

skinny- welcome to week 4! i'd say 4 is a turning point to say the least! you can do it! :glasses:
as for me, i had to take yesterday off due to rain. brendalyne told me not to hurt myself, so i took that to heart and did my run this morning. i COULD have gone last night and run on the track, but the timing didn't work out and i really wanted to have the lemon pepper fish i cooked for my family last night. there's no way i could have eaten and ran... not enought daylight left.
so, week 7, day 1 COMPLETE! this was a 25 minute or 2.5 mile run, so i made it 2.5 miles. it took me 26:55 to run and i'm not at all unhappy with that time, but i can tell you, i worked pretty hard. i had a pain in my side from about 5 minutes in until about 17 minutes, but after that, it finally went away! i've learned on these longer runs not to look at the hill as a challenge, and i don't really push myself to keep up my speed on the hill of death! (did you know you're actually supposed to lean into the hill, not back? sounds weird to me, but it does help a bit....) anyway, today i was really trying to focus on keeping my back, arms, and shoulders loose throughout my run. after the last few runs they've been pretty tight and sore. i'm still not doing as well as i'd like. today my arms were either too loose and just flopped around, or they were tight, or they just plain felt weird. oh well, i'm sure i'll figure it out eventually. i suppose i'll have to spit my gum out next time so i can focus better. :laugh: on my second mile, i got within about 25 feet from a baby deer. i couldn't believe she didn't move when i was running toward her. i guess she could sense that i wasn't a threat. (aka- too slow), but she saw my running partners and took off like a flash. (my fuzzy wookie terrier mix, my hound- lab mix, and my neighbor's husky- lab mix love to run with me in the mornings. they get bored pretty fast, but they stay in the general area i'm in and explore the woods while i'm trudging...)
at any rate, i'm not sure what my heart rate averaged because the HRM croaked out again. it just now turned back on, but i think it probably needs new batteries. (either that or it's getting too damp outside?) it's supposed to be water resistant, though, so who knows what's going on? maybe the seal isn't tight anymore... it is a dinosaur....

Hey Everyone! I'm so proud of all the progress that everyone is making. I feel like I'm officially a runner now.
linbee - Yay for you! I know how excited you must feel. Who cares about how fast or slow you are! You ran for 20 minutes straight! I actually found Days 1 and 2 or Week 5 to be harder than Day 3 as well.
mags - Wow! A half marathon. That's a wonderful goal, and it sounds like you're well on your way to achieving it. I've been thinking about what I want to do after I finish C25K and run a few 5Ks. I guess a 10K is a reasonable next step. I know there's a Bridge to 10K program.
Shannon - great job getting your 40 minutes done. I know you're ecstatic about improving your time by that much. That's a huge improvement.
Jenny - I did Week 7 Day 1 yesterday. I think your 26.55 time is wonderful for 2.5 miles. I decided to try to get in the full 2.5 miles too, and it took me 27.52, which I was pretty pleased with. I really tried to focus on my breathing during the entire run, keeping my mouth closed and breathing through my nose. It made things a lot easier.0 -
After reading through all the recent comments, I am convinced the name "Wimps to Warriors" is VERY FITTING indeed! WTG everyone!
Rachel - How cool is it that you feel like you're "officially a runner now".....yes you definitely ARE! So you're a "nose breather" huh? I'm sure you look way cooler than me....cuz my mouth is hanging open.....it's the only way I can do it!
mags - that is SO COOL that you are signed up for a half marathon! That is a very inspiring goal!
Jenny - glad you listened to mom and waited to run! And the lemon pepper fish sounds yummy too!
As for me - after reading these posts, I suddenly realized that yesterday I was on the WRONG WEEK! I was a week AHEAD! I only needed to run 25 minutes.....and I ran 28! :ohwell: But at my slow pace, that also means I got my 2.5 miles in too (barely).........so that's a good thing.......even though it was completely unintentional! :bigsmile: No WONDER it seemed so darned hard! But it also proves that the mind is a powerful thing......I was convinced that I was supposed to go 28 minutes....so I that's what I did! :noway:

J - good thing you waited. Awesome about the baby deer...it probably realized you weren't a threat. The dogs sound like good company though! Way to go on your run! I am going to try for the full 2.5 when I get there too, but I'm running at about 13 min miles, so it'll take me longer I know. Yeah, and spitting the gum out might be a good idea! I would end up swallowing it.
Rachel - I think we can all say that we are officially runners (at least in our minds.) Even us penguins!
Mags - wow, you go girl! You are at least part of the way there. With a bit of training, you could do it!
Mom - don't feel bad...I'm a mouth breather too. Usually about 1/2 way through, I can't breathe through my nose anymore. I have headphones on, so I can't hear myself, but I'm sure my breathing is loud enough for everyone in the gym to hear! At least I'm not gasping as much any more! And you go on that 28 minutes! Sometimes making mistakes can be a good thing! You did it!
For me, I finished week 6, day 1 yesterday. I am with J & mom...why is running 18 minutes broken up into increments so much harder than running 20 minutes straight? I just barely got through the last 5 minutes, I was dying. But I got it done, and didn't stop, so I'm ok with that. Then my crazy self decided that I was going to try the ARC trainer, and only got about 1/2 mile on that, and was ready to die. I'm surprised I wasn't a puddle on the floor! But oh well.

Finished my W2D1 yesterday and needless to say it was rough lol. Definitely fit into the wimps to warriors because I felt like falling over!!
Does anyone use the app on a blackberry? I have a Curve 8900 and it seems like the app doesn't stay live - it'll lose place and tell me to walk when i'm supposed to jog and vice versa. Also, I do this on a treadmill and notice that sometimes it'll bump me into running or walking at weird times like 12:56 on the app instead of an even 45 or 30, etc... I have it set where my phone doesn't lock for an hour so it can't be that.... Anyone experiencing this?0 -
So, my 5K starts at 9am. Any ideas for a good breakfast? How much should I eat? I know if I eat a large meal, I'm liable to get an upset stomach. For some reason I get a bit motion sick in the morning on my drives to work.... no comment about female drivers!:-P

ariel- i used a podcast for the ipod for my timed runs, but now that i am just on straight minutes i use my ipod stopwatch and whatever i want to listen to. i'm not sure what's happening with yours. does it have a function that shuffles if you shake it???
linbee- i'm glad i'm not the only one who can't chew gum and think at the same time! lol..... great job on the dedication and i know you'll rock day three!

Well I don't have a shake option ( booo wish i had an iphone or droid) I run pandora in the background because I don't have any music on my phone right now, and then I just switch application over to C25K app. It has a timer on how much time is left, and then a little countdown thing that spins and tells me to walk/run. I'm getting in the habit now of just paying attention to when I started running and then when I get down to needing to walk, I just pause and ff to the next run and play it again whenever I get to the minutes listed. Confusing i know right?0 -
W7D2 is DONE! Hallelujah! I don't know if it was the time of day, frame of mind or a little of both, but I really struggled tonight. I did it....but WOW! I may be repeating this week! We'll see what happens Friday!
Oh, and I'm also excited because I ordered a yoga DVD from amazon last night! Can't wait to try it on my "off days". :happy:

brendalyne- i'm guessing you won't need to repeat week 7... sometimes we just have those days. a busy day can really affect your body and you did this last run at the end of the day, right? if you remember, you did 27 minutes just the other day! you can do this! :flowerforyou:
i just have to tell you all if you haven't been reading my posts... i might have to change the answer i gave shannon about what to eat before a race. i think chocolate chip cookies are actually the food of choice! hee hee (just kidding, of course) however, having said that, i ran 2.5 miles (week7, day 2) today in 25:20! that's only 20 seconds off my goal, so yeah! (and of course i attribute the personal best to my cookie binge yesterday!) i think i could break it easily without that blasted hill, (or a with a few more cookies- ) but i'll bet it's helping the training.... just not the pace! my average heart rate was 168 and it only went up to 170 on the hill, instead of the 188 i saw the other day! we're going places W2W's!
gotta run (uh, i mean go....funny how the meaning of that word has changed for me!), time to start school. have a wonderful day lovelies!0 -

Mom - Awww...I have those days too. You are used to running in the morning, and changing time of day can affect you. As can a whole bunch of other factors. I thought I would have to repeat week 5 due to one day, but I really didn't. Or was it 4? I can't even remember anymore! I think 1 or 2 rest days can really help you recoup and strengthen your body.
Well, due to unforseen circumstances (i.e. - Tired little baby circumstances...they're so cute when they sleep!) I wasn't able to make it to the gym yesterday morning as planned to do week 6, day 2. But, I had a back-up! Jillian was staring me in the face, saying you can do 20 minutes of Shred! I had enough time, previewed the video and thought, hey, that looks easy. Let me tell you, I didn't think I was that out of shape...but the jumping jacks nearly did me in! Lol. I was feeling ok yesterday afterwards, but boy, am I sure sore today! Good think today is a usual rest day or I don't think I could make it 1 lap, let alone 1 mile! Lol. I give props to people who do it every day! I was originally intending to use it as a supplement with the C25k training, and I think I'll stick with that plan. Still Jillian though, she's awesome! And tomorrow I am going to try to get w6d2 under my belt. I heard more exercise can help alleviate soreness!0 -

I can't believe it....week 7 is finished! WOW! Today was much better than Wednesday evening. I burned 463 cals, which is still a lot, but less than prior days, so I take that to mean I truly am getting more fit. YAY!!! I'm still slow, but frankly, I really don't care! Yesterday I went to the chiropractor. I've seen the same guy for the last 25 years....on a monthly basis! I have curvature of the spine, so I go to him regularly to "maintain". He is very physically fit and I often ask him general health & fitness questions. He's always SO encouraging.....even as he's watched me go up and down in weight over the past 25 years NUMEROUS times. Anyway, he told me he'd check my body fat % if I wanted him to....so he did. He got out his little gadget, and the first setting he put in was "athletic".....I said NO - I'm NOT athletic! :noway: He said - YES YOU ARE - you just told me you're jogging 2 miles now - so YOU ARE! I have never in a million years thought of myself as athletic. But fellow W2W's....I walked out of there feeling MIGHTY FINE! :bigsmile:

... hello W2W gang! i'm taking a break from school just to pop in and say hi! i'll be doing week 7, day 3 tomorrow if all goes well. hubby will even be home, so i may be able to be a road runner! meep meep!

Jenny - :devil: I'm not ready to "reveal" the body fat % yet. I still have a long way to go to get to a healthy number! But I can tell you that it's down about 4.5% from a few months ago when I started the 30DS. I have no idea what it was when I first started MFP! When my chiropractor offered to do that for me, I assumed he'd have some gadget that was a lot "fancier" than the one I bought on Amazon as I started the 30 DS.....nope....it was very similar! But I decided to do it anyway to see how they compared....and I also thought that if I did it "officially" in his office once a month it would motivate me too!0

Today I'm supposed to up my running to 50 minutes. NOT looking forward to this. I usually do a Random or Hill setting on the treadmill. I might do a flat, non-inclined run for this one.....
The Knoebel's race that I'm in on October 8th was described as moderately hilly. Not sure WHAT the heck that means. So, I tried to include hill training 2/3 days.

shannon- wowzers! 50 minutes! there's no shame in a non-inclined run to start with... i mean, you're running for 50 minutes for goodness sakes! work your way up to the incline! "moderately hilly" sounds suspicious to me! yikes! for some runs i've seen they have an elevation map of the course online... can you find one for the knoebel's?
i'm sure you're right, there are worse things in life than a cookie before race time... how about 7 cookies? :laugh: i'm going for a run tomorrow, maybe i need to cookie up? okay, okay, i won't. i'm limiting myself to two cookies a day. i was going to say i could have a cookie for every 24 oz. of water i drank that day, but i know me... i'd drink water just so i could justify eating another cookie and i'd probably drown myself! lol.:sick:

Hi W2W guys, you are all doing awesome,
Mom- I'll second th WELL DONE on the bf%. That's fab. One of the instructors at the gym decided yesterday to do a 6 week challenge to loose 4% BF. He couldn't believe how high mine was. It was 32%. He made me repeat it and then weighed me because he thought I was telling him I was heavier than i really was. I was pretty pleased at that though, I assumed i he must have thought I was looking pretty lean:happy: . He decided it is because I don't do enough resistance training, which I know. I do loads of cardio. Jogging, zumba, aerobics. Anyway I was actually there for my first boxercise class. I was the only one who turned up so was quite gutted as normally we need a minimum of 2 people for it to go ahead, but he said 'It's okay mags we'll still do it and go through the basics. I abolutely loved it, at one point i didn't know if it was sweat or snot running down my face:laugh: . It's left me with a bit of a weak wrist and stiff shoulders today though but not sore. Burned way over 300 cals in 30 mins Definately gona be back.

mags- boxexercise sounds fun! when i have more time i'll send you my cookie recipe. (if i forget, drop me a note to remind me!) do you have toll house chocolate chips where you are? my friend hated the recipe on the back of the toll house bag because they never came out fluffy, so she set out to find a recipe that would have a nice "fluffy" texture. they're aren't too bad! (of course, if it's a cookie and it has chocolate in it, i'm in!) have a nice time at the wedding!

i got my 2.5 mile run done today... at the track! i thought i was going to die, but i did manage to break 25 minutes! i think it was 24:36 or something like that... not quite what i was REALLY hoping to see, but it was my goal to run 10 minute miles, so i'll take it! i kinda hoped i would be drastically faster if i didn't have to run up and down the monster hill. that didn't happen! i was beat by the end and it was SO boring to run around a little circle 10 times! i kept thinking it would never end! lol. i don't know how you girls make it through 25 minutes on the treadmill! :ohwell: oh, and i DID STOP at the 2.5 mile mark. i didn't run another 24 seconds to round it out to an even 25 minutes! i was whipped! unfortunately i have no idea what my heart rate was because i forgot to stop my hrm when i was done! i know it was hanging around the 160's for the first mile or so, went up to the mid 170's in the second mile, and was in the high 180's for at least the last 400 meters! i thought i was going to die! :sad:
do you suppose this running stuff gets any easier or do we have to go out and conquer ourselves each time we start out for a jog? my brain kept saying, "stop, stop, JUST STOP ALREADY!!!" but i knew i had to report back to you all, so i pushed through. thanks for all the support and encouragement you've given me. you are the best! having said that, i think i'm going to back off the time goal now and just enjoy the running a little more... maybe work some interval training into my off days once or twice a week and i'm sure the time thing will come. have a fabulous weekend W2Ws!:flowerforyou:0
