Bring IT! Part II: Team No Excuses

I assume that you have taken care of your physical selves today with your proper nutrition and kick-butt workouts. Now's the time for a final thought of the night.
As we all know, obesity and obesity-related health issues like Type II diabetes are on the rise, not only in the United States but throughout the world. Do YOU feel like this is a relevant issue and something that we should be concerned about, or do you think that there is too much emphasis on it?
Either way, none of us can deny the fact that collectively, as a nation, we are getting unhealthier, more sedentary, and less fit. What do you think needs to be done to make the social changes to promote healthier lifestyles?
Whether it be big or small, how are YOU promoting your new, healthier lifestyle? Specifically, what do you hope to achieve by doing this?
**********************************************
Great thoughts. As a mom of 3 girls, I want to be a healthy example to them. Since I've gotten in shape and lost weight, I've completely changed our eating habits (my kids love brown rice, whole grains, fruit & veggies, etc). My kids love being active, we walk and bike a lot in the summer, go to the pool, etc. During the winter, the girls have jump ropes that they jump indoors. They raised money for their school for the American Heart Association Jump-a-thon tomorrow. I'm going in to twirl jump ropes for their gym classes. I became a Team Beachbody coach so I can help other people get in shape. They are really promoting workouts from Kathy Smith that help with Type II diabetes (even got the approval of the Amercian Diabetes Association). Anyway... I live a healthy lifestyle and hope to lead by example. I teach my kids healthy habits and they are teaching their friends!! It's amazing to me to see how unhealthy the kids eat at schools now!! (my pet topic... :grumble: ) People need education, there are so many people that have *no* idea how to eat healthy now.
That's awesome Jess. I think you are doing a great thing for your kids. I don't have kids but I don't understand when parents post things like "I can't eat clean because of my kids" or "because I have a family." I'm like what?!?! Isn't having kids/ a family all the MORE reason to eat healthy?!? Why do parents think it's okay to fill their kids' bodies up with junk? Just because the kids want it?? Well, kids also want a real live pony and to play all night in the street but they don't get it (usually... some lucky kids get the pony.
If kids want what's bad for them, don't give it to them, right?!?! I have hang-ups over my parents feeding me junk, now I have two little siblings and I go home and watch them doing the same thing to them, it makes me really mad. I want to say to my dad (who is very healthy when it comes to exercise, but not eating), "look at [Little 8-year-old Sister]. She is skinny now, she has no worries, she can eat pop-tarts and popsiscles for *breakfast* [I'm not kidding, sadly] and you won't *see* the effects for quite some time. But you don't see what's going on inside, and quite frankly, her temper tantrums and bad behavior may be eased by not pouring *sugar* into her 24-7!!!!!... so you do already see some of the side effects of bad foods if you don't turn a blind eye. And in a few years she is going to start putting on weight because that's what happens when we eat bad stuff and we're not 8 years old with a fast metabolism and the ability to run around all day. *I* was her, I was skinny as a kid but ever since puberty I have struggled to get to and keep a healthy weight. I had no idea about nutrition. The path doesn't have to be this hard if you would just teach us the right way to eat and take care of our bodies!!!!"
*BUT* I don't do that... I mean sometimes I try to say something nicely but from my mom I get "don't tell me how to raise my kids, once you have your own you can do things your own way" (true, and I will!...), and from my dad I seriously get this answer, which makes no sense at all: "I know, it's all your mom's fault, she's with them all day" (this is after I've just said, "dad, why are you buying the kids candy and pop here at Walmart, when they just ate ice cream and they haven't yet had dinner?")
I don't get it, it makes me so mad. I seriously watch them give the kids cake for a "snack" and then wonder why they don't eat dinner... and they don't *make* them eat it... and then here comes bedtime and, surprise, they're hungry again and they want ice cream. It's horrible but it is not my place to say anything... I have been told that so I have stopped trying.
So I just don't have a plan. I try to do what's right for *me* and my little sister is very impressionable so occasionally I'll say things like, "mmmm, this salad is so yummy and so much better for my body than something greasy or fatty." But I don't live with them or anywhere near them, so that doesn't do much.
I have learned to become strong enough to assert that "this is what is right for ME," and not to let people push me into eating "just one slice" or into skipping a workout "because it's so rare that you visit." I used to think that was selfish of me but now I realize I have to take care of myself and be good to myself before I can be good to anyone else. If they don't like it, I just try hard not to let it bother me. That is as far as I've gotten in my plan; I don't see any other way to do it.0 -
Well team,
Today is my rest day and I'm already feeling like I shouldn't take it. But I know my body needs it to recover, so at most, I might do some light cardio tonight. It's pretty nice out so I'll see if I can go for a light jog tonight. The nutrition has been spot-on though, so I won't be feeling guilty if I choose not to work out. Tomorrow I will be back with a vengeance though with Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps X.
Neeterskeeter,
I totally agree with your evaluation of your little siblings. I'm in the exact same situation, except I live with them and see it daily. I too, encountered the "Don't tell me how to raise my kids thing" so I just keep my mouth shut and keep on bringing it. My brother and sister were thin when they were younger, but years of eating junk has caught up with them, and they're not making any changes. We even were concerned that my sister was quite underweight when she was a toddler, but that's no longer an issue anymore.
I fear the day when I have my own kids and Grandma lets them eat junk all day long. I don't know what I'll do about that, and I realize it's ok to let kids (and yourself) have a treat now and again, but only treats. Not on a daily basis! I've read some stories by women who spent summers at their Grandparents houses, only to come back in the fall looking like roly-polys because Grandma gave them money to buy candy every day. Not my kids, no way.
My sister looks up to me too, but she still loves her high-sugar, high-carb candy and junk that just isn't doing her any good at all. She's always had a taste for those supersugary candies like sour patch kids, gummi things, and fun dips. Pure sugar coated in sugar! Gross.
Way to go everyone! One life at a time, starting with your own!0 -
I hear you, mgullette! I hadn't really thought about that... at the moment my kids, if I have any, will live so far away from my parents that if they were to visit them, I would be there too, and I would have to enforce the rules and maybe give them back that "they're my kids and this is how I raise them" line.
If they do happen to live close by then I guess I would go with the "a treat at Grandma's is okay" route (and then they'll probably *love* going to Grandma's LOL) but I would really try to impress on my parents that it *cannot* be a regular thing.
I agree that treats once in a while are fine... in fact, if you don't let a kid have any treats, they may want more of it, kind of like with alcohol and other rebellions. So a healthy way to go about it, I think, is to show them by example and practice that a true "treat" means once a week maybe, on a special family night or something... not all the time, especially not for breakfast and bedtime snacks etc.!
Re: rest days... what's funny is that I used to make myself take them, but I felt that same way, sluggish, lazy, and *usually* I didn't feel like I really "needed" them. Now I don't take them unless I feel I need them; I try to exercise every day. But in my case I have plenty of days where I don't *get* to exercise -- like if I get slammed with an all-night project at work, or if my boyfriend and I are on vacation and we are running around all day and then I don't want to run outside at night etc. On those days I'm like, man, I really wish I could work out... and then I think, "well, I never take a rest day and I probably need one" and I feel better. I think doing light cardio tonight is a good idea for you! On days where I feel I should rest some I usually do *something*, sometimes yoga or the eliptical etc... lighter than what I usually do so it feels like a "rest" but I also don't feel sluggish.0 -

Here's a question people ask me: "I'm finding that my exercise routine is very intense and I'm seeing the benefits on day 1, so what can I do to stay motivated and keep going?"
Most folks struggle with motivation every day. I'm one of them. Motivation can be broken down into a few subcategories. My fifth Law of Health and Fitness is "Loving It." Progress and motivation are possible if you look forward to your workouts. They have to be challenging and interesting to you. If you despise them before you start them, you're not going to survive them for very long. If your reasons why are meaningful to you, then staying motivated is easier. I'm always promoting health, fitness, quality of life, and feeling good as reasons to get and stay motivated. Not to say that a person's goal to lose weight or fit into smaller clothes isn't motivating—it's just that when these goals are obtained then new ones need to come into play.
When the numbers on your scale and measuring tape are low enough to make you happy then it's important to start to explore some new numbers. I'm talking about numbers that relate to ability, improvement, and achievement. Your physical appearance will improve at a more rapid rate if you can start to exercise with your focus on power, speed, and strength. This mind set applies to both men and women. This means that your motivation comes from your desire to "Bring It" during exercise at home and out in the world. Let your P90X® or Power 90® workouts trigger something new and bigger than anything you've done before. For me it's skiing and gymnastics. For you it could be anything that pushes you beyond the confines of repeating the same workouts the same way, day after day.0 -

You're working hard to lose the weight and get in shape. You bought P90X®, ChaLEAN Extreme®, Slim in 6®, Hip Hop Abs®, or fill in the blank. For some people, the results they've worked so hard for slowly disappear as bad habits return. Some wonder how "those thin people" can stay that way all the time.
In 1993, the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) was founded to study the behaviors of "successful losers." Those studied lost an average of 72 pounds, with a minimum weight loss of 30 pounds, and were able to keep the weight off for at least 5 years. Looking at various studies on obesity, the researchers found 7 common factors among those who were successful in maintaining their weight loss.
1.Eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet. Those studied ate an average of 1,385 calories per day (plus or minus 557), with an average of 26.6 percent coming from fat. Although 26.6 percent from fat may seem high to you, it is lower than the typical American's diet, which consists of simple carbs and ready-to-eat, low-cost processed food. Also, the researchers found that fast food visits were limited to less than ONE per month (step away from the fries!).
2. Participating in a high level of physical activity. Those studied burned an average of over 2,600 calories per day. This calorie burn came from doing normal, everyday physical activity, including a lot of walking. In fact, over 75 percent of the participants included walking as a form of exercise, with 48 percent of the total participants adding walking to other forms of exercise. Think it can't be done? The next time you go somewhere, try parking a little farther away and walking, take the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the bus or subway one stop sooner, or walk the dog around the block the next time you want to reach for a snack. It's a great way to get in a little more exercise time.
3.
Limiting TV viewing. I heard something great the other day. Someone said that they had always made excuses about not having enough time to exercise. Yet, they always fit in 3 hours of TV viewing every night. Instead of plopping down in front of the TV at night, try to find other things to do. Why not take this time to pop in your favorite exercise DVD? Take a walk with your kids, read a book, or take a class. Not only will it get you moving, it also stimulates your brain in a way that TV viewing can't. It can also kill that urge for mindless snacking while watching TV.
4. Eating breakfast. Those studied rarely skipped breakfast. After "fasting" all night, your body actually needs the energy that a healthy breakfast can provide. Eating breakfast makes you less likely to grab that pastry in the kitchen at work or run out for fast food at lunchtime. It also keeps your metabolism going, so that your body doesn't shift into the "protect and conserve all fat" mode.
5.
Maintaining dietary consistency. To the successful weight losers (or winners!), "diet" is not a bad word. They are always consistent with how many calories they are eating. There is no
"cheat" day or falling off of the wagon during holidays or vacations.
6. Maintaining a high level of dietary restraint. This goes along with factor #5. Those who are successful at weight loss are always conscious about the types of foods that go in their mouths. When you are trying to maintain your hard-deserved weight loss, be conscious of the types of foods you are eating. One hundred calories of your favorite candy treat are not the same as 100 calories of a protein shake. But, if you "mess up," don't beat yourself up. Those who are successful at keeping the weight off jump right back in where they left off, which leads us to the last common factor . . .
7. Frequent self-weighing. Seventy-five percent of those looked at by the NWCR weighed themselves at least once a week, with almost half (44 percent) weighing in every day. This allowed them to keep track of any weight gain (or loss) and to address it before it became a "big" problem. Also included in this self-monitoring behavior was the continued counting of calories and fat grams. This continued "reinforcement" goes a long way toward keeping you on track for a slimmer today and healthier tomorrow.0 -
I went to the doctors to day to get my regular pro time...(every other week) and each time i weigh myself. I was so happy I lost 4 pounds...I know its not much but its a start, it also means I'm one pound away from my "Loose Fatty by St.Patty's" challenge." YAY!!:smooched:0

I read this and loved it. Talk about making me more determined. Mike in case you think I'm being mean, I didn't write this, I just found it a kick in the pants!
A popular question that I hear is about how to stop giving in to food cravings. How to stop eating your favorite junk food. Maybe it’s chocolate or ice-cream or candy of some kind, or maybe it’s cookies and cake, or potato chips or fast food, or something you just love to eat, but need to stop eating because it is junk food. Whether you are trying to lose weight or gain weight, no matter what your goals are, everyone likes some kind of junk food and needs to stop eating it now. But, some people just can't stop. They just can't "get rid of the cravings" for these foods, and just can't stop giving in to their food cravings.
Before I go any further, let me be honest. I am going to get mean in this article. I am sure I will offend a whole bunch of people. My goal of this article is to get my point of view across, a point of view that I feel very strongly about, and I am sure a lot of people will disagree with it, but oh well. I want to get my point of view across in the exact way that I have it in my head, so I will NOT sweeten it up so that I don't hurt people's feelings or make them angry with me. I want to get my point across in such a way that it motivates everyone reading this article. So, if you have a problem with that, stop reading. If you don't, then here goes...
SHUT UP!!!! Who the hell are you to whine to me? Shut up already!! Sure, I can completely understand if your problems with getting the results you want are from the wrong information about your workout or diet. I've been there before. I used to do the wrong stuff. But after I finally learned the right stuff, I made this website so others don't have that problem. I want to save you time, money and effort by giving you free truthful information about how to get the results you want. But, this isn't about your diet or workout. This isn't about you wasting money on some useless ab workout product or stupid weight loss product or other useless supplements and gimmicks that weren't working for you. This is about food cravings. Don't whine to me. I've heard it before...
"It's so hard, I'm around this type of food all the time, the cravings just won't go away, I have a sweet tooth, I just have to give in to the cravings."
Stop it, you're boring me.
Don't give me your little stories. Like how you are around this type of food all the time. Do you think you are the only one, buddy? Everyone I know and am related to eats junk food all day long. This crappy food is everywhere I look. I am no different than you, except, I don't give in. Do I have super human powers? No. Do I not give in because my arms are bigger than yours? No. Do I not give in because I can bench press more than you? No. Do I not give in because my body fat is lower than yours? No. Do I not give in because I am physically better or physically stronger than you? No. I don't give in because I am mentally stronger than you. That's all it is really, mental. And for you to give in and me not to give in, we can only assume that I am mentally stronger than you. How does that make you feel? I don't know a damn thing about you, but I know that mentally, I can do something that you cannot. It sure makes me feel good though. That fact motivates me even more. So, thanks for being so mentally weak. It will make me work that much harder during my next workout. Thanks a lot.
Sorry, did I hurt your feelings yet? I didn't mean to, I'm just stating the truth. It's not my fault if the truth hurts. You understand now that this is all mental, right? You understand that it's all a matter of mental strength and will power, don’t you? Good. Here's what you do. Next time your little food cravings start coming out, think about this. Look at the food and think, "What do I want more… the 5 seconds of enjoyment that I will have while I chew this food, or the enjoyment of the fact that 24 hours of everyday, 7 days of every week, I will have the body that I want to have." That is what it comes down to really, and let me tell you... no food tastes as good as that feeling feels.
And you other people, you bull****ters. The ones that give me that idiotic speech about how "every food is ok if eaten in moderation." And how "no one should deny themselves anything." These are the same people who probably believe in having "Cheat days." Cheat days are the 1 day of the week where some people allow themselves to cheat a little from their diet and give into their food cravings, in moderation of course, kind of like a reward for the good work they did all week. Ya know what... BULL****! The hell with you and your cheat days. Your reward for sticking to your diet all week is 1 day of cheating? What kind of complete crap is this? Your reward for sticking to your diet all week is RESULTS! Remember them? They’re the reason that you are on this diet and working out in the first place. To get results!!! Not to have a cheat day at the end of the week.
Every food is ok as long as it's eaten in moderation. One candy bar won't hurt. One cookie won't hurt. One piece of junk food won't hurt. Oh, is that so? Will it help? No, it will not help. It is doing nothing good for you in any way possible. Therefore, it serves no purpose. You are giving into your cravings for 5 seconds of chewing enjoyment, and nothing more.
If anything, it does more bad than good. Do you know what giving into your food cravings "in moderation" does to most people? It makes them feel guilty. It makes them crave that food even more. It keeps the cravings alive and strong. Stop giving in to your cravings and the cravings will go away. Simple as that.
What are you thinking now? Who am I? Like I never cheat or give into my cravings a little? NO! I don't! Not at all, not a little, not in moderation, not anything. The thought of eating some type of junk food doesn't even enter my mind anymore. I don't need those 5 seconds. I am stronger than that. Call it will power, or call it mental strength. My goal is to get results. My road to getting those results doesn't have to have 5 seconds of chewing pleasure. I eat for purpose, not pleasure. Food is not a hobby. Food is something your body needs to survive, and in the case of working out and getting results, food is something your body needs so that you can get those results. Food is nothing more than that. So, I give my body only what it needs to make these results happen. Does my body need the 5 seconds it takes for me to chew a piece of chocolate? No. Does my mind need it? NO! My mind is way too strong to need it, and that feels much better than any piece of chocolate would ever taste, and I love knowing that.
Like I said, I eat for purpose, not pleasure. That statement sums up everything that I think about "cheat days" and "food cravings" and "everything is ok if it's eaten in moderation." So don't whine to me about how hard it is for you. Do you think I will feel bad for you? I won't. You are not special. It is exactly as hard for you as it is for me and EVERYONE else. What's the difference? I have what it takes mentally. Ya know what else? You have it too. You just need to learn to use it. And, hopefully… this article has helped bring it out.
This article was posted by Havingitall on another thread. Booya! Exactly what I've been saying all this time. I knew there were others out there who felt like I did. I feel like I could have written this.
M0 -
Ha ha I *love* that article havingitall posted, and mgullette, I thought you *did* write it, it sounds like you LOL!
I also really really liked the article about the 1993 study of what makes people successfully thin. I really think it could be posted as its own thread because there are *so* many misconceptions out there, like "all food is okay in moderation." Why think like that? Why not think, "what am I putting into my body? Is it junk? Then it is not okay, I deserve better than that!!!!" It might make people think but for some reason when you tell people "junk is never okay", they take that as picking on them personally. But I just wish everyone could read that study because I think the results are totally obvious -- feed yourself good stuff, and be consistent, and you will have results!!! Feed yourself bad stuff, and/or be inconsistent, and you won't have nearly the same results.
Thanks for sharing.0 -
today was a bit tough because i was out with my mum all afternoon. while she enjoying her ice cream (it's florida, it's hot) and reubens and potato chips, i was feeling all guilty about the dollop of dressing on my cesaer salad. boo.
so now it's night and i'm heading to the gym where i am going to refocus and be proud of the little things:
not eating the icecream she offered, not ordering the taco salad with 2 cups of sour cream and successfully drinking lots and lots of water. yea!0 -
Good job meisje! I am having issues with salad dressing too, as I'm trying to limit my sodium and even the low fat or nonfat kind seems to put me over on my sodium for the day. I'm like, what am I supposed to do, eat plain salads???? I guess maybe! GOOD JOB not having ice cream, that was always one of my downfalls.0

Balsamic vinegar! Yummmy.
I always order my salad dressing on the side too and then I dip the tines of my fork in and then to my salad. You use much less and get the taste of the dressing on every bite!0 -
Hey NeeterSkeeter!

Here!
I just got out of the shower after that $#%^* new recumbent bike hubby bought. I'm up to 30 minutes - which probably doesn't sound like much to the rest of you, but I collapsed after 5 minutes on Sunday, the first day.
:bigsmile:0 -
And I LOVE that post by Havingitall, too!
awesome0 -
Today was an interesting day. Hubby is home, and needless to say I baked. lol
I made banana bread, and lemon bars. I used recipes that were low calorie though, and I used organic ingredients, but my body feels soo weird from having something sweet because I've been eating so clean. My head hurts super bad, and I feel really "sluggish"
I'm so proud of everyone that worked out long and hard today! Great job!!!
I watched the Part 2 of Biggest Loser tonight, and it helps me to stay motivated. Gotta love Bob and Jillian. =]
My hubby surprised me and bought My Fitness Coach for the Wii for me today, and I'm so excited to test it out. I'll post about it after I post.
Today could have been alot worse as far as eating, but I will remember how weird my body feels just from having a few low calorie desserts. :grumble: That's more than enough motivation for me to freeze the leftovers, and save them for hubby or for friends/family.0 -
Well, despite a jam packed day including a trip to the ER to see my father I managed to get to the gym and get in a good work out. I feel all lovely and warm in the afterglow of activity :-)
I saw the physiotherapist today and I have strained my hamstring and my calf :-( I have to stop Tennis, which is a pain but I had worked that out as it really hurt yesterday! I am having another run tomorrow morning and I'll see I feel, too much pain and I am supposed to stop running until I'm ok. I am a bit annoyed about that as I am loving the running and the sense of achievement I'm getting. Long term though I get the whole need to heal issue. It won't stop exercise though as the elliptical and bike aren't hurting at all - which makes them fine to continue with.0 -
I am here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I worked out today, although I almost didn't and then well I got off my *kitten* and did it.....went to a clients and argh, then honey made dinner and I was starving cause he started so damn late.....ate a cracker and some grapes and then grouched at him, he finally fed me.
I am Bringing It tomorrow........great post Havingtail by way of M, its true......

Hello Bring IT friends!! :flowerforyou: I have a fun day planned... my girls are participating in the Jump Rope for Heart program at their school today to raise money for the American Heart Association. During their gym classes, they jump rope and have jump roping competitions. I am going in to be a jump rope twirler. It's so fun, I've done it for the last couple years. Then inbetween I'll head to the Y to get in my tempo run for the day. (my girls are in different gym classes at totally different times of course! ) It's so fun to see the kids excited to jump rope and not realize what a great workout they're getting! Making exercise fun for them at that age is awesome!
I'll check back in later! Keep it clean and push hard during your workouts! :bigsmile:0 -
Good morning everyone! Ugh, another crazy day of work ahead of me:mad: Gotta love getting all my stress out from work on my daily p90x workout! I'd probably go insane without it! BRING IT0

well, my arms are sore from weight lifting every day (i never, ever lift weights in my "normal" life) but i am going to continue because my arms and back are not so pretty in the new wedding dress (that i'm picking up tomorrow).
this is why i love vacation: fresh fruit, sunshine and a FREE gym where i can work out in every night. it also helps to be away from my boyfriend for a few days - don't get me wrong, he is fantastic, but he is one of those 6' 4" rail-thin guys that eats 12 full meals a day, never works out and still somehow stays just hunky. (lucky me!)
i have been avoiding tasting all the yummy treats in my mum's snack cupboard and i can't wait for a healthy dinner of lean chicken and fresh veggies.
i have been working out every night for about an hour and just hope and pray i can continue once the vacation is over...0 -

Good job meisje! I am having issues with salad dressing too, as I'm trying to limit my sodium and even the low fat or nonfat kind seems to put me over on my sodium for the day. I'm like, what am I supposed to do, eat plain salads???? I guess maybe! GOOD JOB not having ice cream, that was always one of my downfalls.
Balsamic vinegar! Yummmy.
I always order my salad dressing on the side too and then I dip the tines of my fork in and then to my salad. You use much less and get the taste of the dressing on every bite!
Thanks for the good tip!0
