Yuck..heard this story on the radio this morning! I used to bartend, and we'd put an old penny into a glass of coke, and it would turn shiny and new looking in about 10-20 minutes. Scary!!

Um yeah, it's acid. That was never a secret. It won't turn your insides into jelly-like substance, if that's what you're thinking.

It's still really gross to think about.

My husband went to the doctor in May 2011, I had set him up for a physcial and he had some fasting lab work done that included his cholesterol, which was off the charts. At the time he was 273 lbs and a pack a day smoker and a 6 pack a day MT Dew drinker- you know what the doctor told him---- STOP DRINKING SODA!!!!!! You figure he'd be jumping on the smoking, right? NOPE it was the soda first- He slowly got off the soda and he is now 211 lbs his lab work is great-- smokinig is next. The doctor told him that soda, including diet soda , is the one of the worst things you can be putting into your body.

That is crazy. I'd want a new doctor. How can drinking diet soda be worse than smoking?

In general it's not, but six regular mountain dew's a day could be just as bad as smoking if they're causing you to become obese and diabetic. In regard to diet soda, it's associated with obesity even more strongly than regular soda is. There is no great RCT that proves it's causal, but most feel that it probably is.

I drink about 2 cans of diet pepsi a day and just have not been able to give it up. It's either that or coffee/cappucino and the diet pepsi has 0 calories!

  • I can believe it about the Mountain Dew. I was drinking alot of it about 15 years ago (in High School) and started developing horrible stomach pains. The Dr told me that the pop was eating my stomach lining since I wasn't eating alot at the time. I was told not to drink pop and I would feel better-he was right...I still can't drink that stuff just thinking about that!

I'm a former Diet Coke guzzler. Reflux changed that but I still have one occasionally if I'm really craving sweets.

Hmmm... should we be more worried about the acidity in the pop or that there is possibility of a mouse in my can??? (As I drink a diet coke... they are just so tasty!)

That is scary. If only the digestive system had some way to protect itself against the mild acidic affects of soda pop...

Some food has iron in it. If you get enough iron and drop it on your foot, it will break your toes. I'm not eatin THAT STUFF either!!!!

Your stomach acid would dissolve a rat too. Probably faster.

Hot sauce will do that to a penny also.
To clean the battery acid build up on the terminals you can use coke.

I no longer drink soda or carbondated beverages, but I do have to say that there is far more acid in the stomach, than in a soda.

The stomach is made up of hydrochloric acid.

It is certainly recycled for many, but there are many folks new to this journey...especially thist ime of year.

And while many people exercise their right to imbibe soda regularly, the point of the article is still valid. Soda is evil for the normal human body.

You guys know there's a lot of acidity in other foods we eat too, right? Like tomatoes and vinegar? Well, maybe not vinegar, but I'm pretty sure it's acidic as well....

    *sipping coke zero*

.... yeah, I'm bringing this full circle to the zero-calorie thread earlier ... I lied, and I do actually drink coke zero, even though it has no nutritional value and could probably clean my carburetor.
