Dont forget Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Love these guys but technically 80's, they cut their first album in I think 1982 and even Blood Sugar Sex Magic, their breakthrough album was I think 1989

sorry lowfatpie you type faster than me :)
  • This is a cool topic. I could go on and on with a list, but my top 5 (which to this day are still my favorites) are:

    1) Alice in Chains
    2) Stone Temple Pilots
    3) Soundgarden
    4) Nirvana
    5) Foo Fighters

I'm going to throw a band out there that probably 95% haven't even heard of... my favorite band of all time... Dream Theater.

I have definitely heard of them, and I'm sure they are from the 80's!!

Yes, but they peaked in 90-91, so pretty sure it counts. Same with RHCP.

Nine Inch Nails (ok they are from late 80's)
    Garbage
    Placebo

I'm trying to think of others I like but many in my head are from the late 80's.

I'm in the same boat...a lot of my favorite bands played through the 90s, but got their start much earlier... <3 Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and the Cure to this day...but they started earlier.

If I had to go with a 90s only band....it would have to be Goo Goo Dolls, Beck, and Jane's Addiction.

It would seem we like the same music

Yes, but they didn't actually become widely known until 1990, and split up in 91.

but 'widely known' does not a 90's band make  some of us were already listening to them in the 80's...
  • Ace of Base and Cathy Dennis!!!
  • Anyone mention Silverchair?

Loved Nirvana, was a HUGE Smashing Pumpkins fan. Frente was an awesome band. And for my dork side, The Party (they were a band of five Mickey Mouse Club teens).

Loved a lot of the bands mentioned already (90's music was great), but here are a few more that weren't mentioned:

Korn, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Third Eye Blind, REM (I know they started in the 80's, but they had some hits in the 90's), U2 (same deal as REM), Metallica (had some hits in the 90's, started in the 80's). So many great ones were already covered. Love grunge and alternative music as well as hard rock/metal and my starting point for listening to this music was the 90's.

What, nobody's said Radiohead? I know they're considered an 00s band, with Kid A and so on, but OK Computer is an amazing 90s album.

OP said Radiohead :) Radiohead is definitely my choice too

That wasn't a tribute to Kurt Cobain. It was about Budd Dywer, a PA treasurer who comitted suicide pubicly.

Metallica to me are 80's. I actually saw them open for Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon" tour before Cliff Burton was killed.

That's just showing my age of course but I wouldn't classify them as a 90's band myself.

Limp Bizkit on the other hand, yes :)

I can keep being annoying here REM and U2 NO WAY are these 90's bands. You can not classify them as such.
