    everyone is wrong.

Bahahahaha Love it!! Whats the anwser my friend??

Here is why everyone is wrong... What base are those numbers in? OH SNAP!

Yeah..... except NO. These aren't logarithms.

I am not talking about logs.
    Base 10 = 012345789
    base 16 = 0123456789ABCDEF
    base 2 = 01
    base 5 = 01234

    etc...

    7 in base 2 = 0111
    7 in base 16 = 7
    in base 10 = 7
    in base 5 = 12

    etc...

It's an implied base 10, unless otherwise noted. :grumble:

    for clarification, yes base 10.

    so everyone is not wrong.

    yay for being right!

    etc...

for example 160 in base 10 really is

    1*10^2) + ( 6^10^1) + (0 * 10^1)

notice 10 is the base. the exponent is the number position hundreds, tens, ones. it starts at 0
    (n * base^numberPosition) + (n * base^numberPosition)

    n is the number in the number position i.e 1, 6, 0
But because the first number in the original question is a 9, this would have to be in at least base 10 (but you already knew that right???).

    1 + 1 = 10
    1 + 1 + 1 = 11
    1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 100

some of you need to lighten up
i don't think answers to this math equation predict the fate of humanity

Maybe math illiteracy in the general public won't destroy humanity. However, education is my life's passion, and it's seriously depressing me how it has failed so many.

I'll give you that, there are a lot of problems with the education system.
However, just because people in this thread cannot answer the question does not mean they've been failed or that they should be ashamed of themselves.
I couldn't answer this question...do I know basic math? nope. My syntax is atrocious. I had great teachers but I never applied myself. I have also forgotten most of what I have learned because I do not use it. That being said, I am on the honour roll in the top university in my country...hence why I don't feel like whether people can answer this math question or not predicts the fate of our humanity.
I completely agree with that their are issues with the education system. I just think there was quite a dramatic reaction from some people to what I thought was a light, fun thread.

I wasn't saying it was going to be War of the Worlds because far, (FAR) too many people got this wrong. If you watch the first 3 minutes of Idiocracy (it's on YouTube...the movie is not good, but the first 3 minutes are awesome...and probably way too true) my point is it's going downhill, and fast.

Here on this very board, is a reading teacher writing incomprehensible sentences and doing basic math wrong. The question was basic math we use everyday, not Trig or Calculus, which has absolutely no use in a non-math/non-science based career. I'll be the first to admit that, despite taking Calculus twice (once in high school, once in college), if I had a gun to my head telling me to find the derivative, I'd be dead. But multiplication? Addition? Subtraction? Everyone does that every day, whether they notice or not.

There are an increasing number of English and Math illiterates being passed through the school system, with no one to properly teach them, or to even notice how much help they need. These are the people who will be in control of government and corporate America when Gen X is retiring. And that's SCARY.

Of course it is not the end of humanity. I certainly did not mean to sound that dramatic. It was a scathing comment on the educational system, nothing more.

okay i'll stop messing around, my point is some shouldn't criticize other people, they can be dead wrong when they think they're right.

i think you could post this on ANY THREAD ON THIS FORUM...

OK I think strange. I got seven and for the right reasons, but work is odd.

    9-5+5*0+3 = 4+5*0+3 = 4+3 = 7

There's nothing really wrong with doing it that way as long as you understand that + and - separate the various terms, and that each term is calculated independently. Which you clearly do.

    I got 7.

PEMDAS is correct, but I know also that MD and AS are grouped together and when you have both MD or AS, you just work left to right. A lot of people are taking PEMDAS as literal, forgetting that it's multiplication AND division, addition AND subtraction.

Left to right, people! It's 7!

    7 , order of operations means you do 5 x 0 first, then add/subtract

Okay I started right remembering the German saying: Punktrechnung geht vor Strichrechnung and remembering that somthing times zero is zero so I got
    9-5+0+3
and then I worked backwards :S
I don't know why, I know it is not 1 but 7 but I have to admit I am a totally confused demon that calculates backwards

But then I am glad I can still figure out what to pay whendoing grocery shopping without using a calculator
I even can somtimes find out what 10 percent of something is just using my brain

And I was never really good in maths

So I admit I got it wrong, I found my mistake and I try to keep it in mind
