If your body gets used to eating so little, what do u think will happen when you start eating normal again? Not going to be able to maintain just gain! good luck on your journey and hopefully you can become a healthier you!

I was eating only around 500 calories before so l am eating lots more and my body is happy now with this amount everyday.

I tried to eat more and l just would be sick in the tummy with pain as l was putting to much food in my body. I will not be doing that any more.

ultimately this is YOUR goal and YOUR challenge and YOUR life, you definitely need to do what you think is best for YOU. A 2000 calorie diet is what the average person should consume, that is what all nutrition labels are based on, sometimes that is not even enough.
Before you blow everyone off I would consult a physician to ensure you are doing what’s right and healthy for your plan and diet. No use in losing all that weight just to get sick.

Thanks l have seen my local physician and he agrees that l am to be on 1200 calories a day and workout at least for 1 hour a day but l do workout more because of my busy life.

My doctor told me the same thing, I chose not to listen to her and ate about 1700 cals a day, I lost a lot of weight doing this. What made me mad is that after losing all this weight she would still tell me to eat 1200 calories

Ahh well, best thing you can do is steer clear of the doctors, you obviously know better than her and don't need any advice.

    Seriously why go.

Okay, so don't eat back your exercise calories and don't eat enough for your body to do it's job. Why are you even posting about it then? Is eating too little working for you? Fabulous. Continue starving yourself then.

Ok, l will then thanks for that one..But l am not starving like you say l am.

You are actually. And though you might see "good" results right now, in the future, too few calories is nearly always associated with too few nutritents. This can lead to osteoporosis, early onset Alzheimer's, dementia, heart disease, all sorts of terrible maladies.

Well now, it depends on WHAT you eat. Eat lots of protein, vitamins and minerals as well as healthy fats and enough carbs and you will be fine.

However, stuff oneself with burgers, junk, cakes, crisps, biscuits, chips, kebabs, pizza and nothing else all week, then yes, the person will be defunct nutritionally.

I looked at your diary, and yes, you are malnourished. if you are going to eat BARELY any food, you have to be sure it is 100% good nutritious food, ZERO junk like you are eating. I wish you luck and hope you don't pass out.

Eating more is harder than it sounds I found. I am trying to reset my metabolism by eating maintenance calories. I just ran a report on my net calories for the last month and realized that my net calories were just slightly higher than before. That is even with cutting back a bit with cardio. Many days it looks like I was under my BMR. I never ate as low as 1200 but I still have certain habits after 1.5 years on a high deficit that are hard to break. Of course if you just ate more junk it would be easier but I am trying to eat quality calories. So I think those that have told you you didn't really give it a real try are probably right. I truly believe in doing this. I was in a stubborn plateau so I had nothing to lose anyway and I haven't really given it a good try. Are you weight training? When I was at a higher deficit I must have been higher than I thought too. You may be losing now but down the line you can get yourself into a big stall and have to do what I am doing now. When you reach your goal you will have your body used to lower calories making it harder to keep the weight off. I am not really trying to convince you but I am trying to show the other side of your claim. I wish I knew when I started what I do now. Unlike you my body didn't lose well with large deficits. I wish I had eaten more sooner.

I was eating more food as everyone was telling me to do so. But l have not loss any weight in the last 3 weeks by eating more. So now l am going back to eating under 1200 cals a day as l was losing the weight then without any problems.

I think you do really need to listen to your body and that will let you know if you need more fuel or not.

How are you even saying it does not work when you are not even netting anywhere close to 1200 calories. Your in the low hundreds. How are you saying something does not work when you are not even doing it right.

Honestly, why bother trying to drill this stuff into peoples heads? Most of these women who refuse to eat more than like 500 calories a day are stubborn and will not listen.
Society has drilled it into our heads that we have to basically starve ourselves to lose weight and be healthy, which is total bullcrap.

If she doesn't want to listen to good, healthy, advice, don't force it on her. Let her starve.

Agreed, I find it quite funny that people don't heed the advice of people that have been there done that. So that being said I will continue to eat back my exercise calories which currently is allowing me to eat 3200 calories a day and I will continue to lose a pound a week on avg... Best part is I know that I have no chance of being skinny fat at the end of this weight loss.....

304lb loss... I am sticking with his advice!

Some days I like to read message board threads like this one just so I can laugh at the responses of the more - ahem - sarcastic fellow MFP users.

It's one thing to ask for advice, it's another to scoff at the people providing sound advice. I like to look at the ticker people post at the bottom of their messages. It just so happens that I usually take the advice of the more successful people. Especially after I ran into the exact same probelm as you, only it lasted one week before I smartened up and did some research. Sifted thru the bullsh*t, read many different sites, not just this one, and...

    UPPED MY CALORIES.

    Just consider it.

I agree with you!!! I was told the same thing because I range anywhere from 1000-1200 a day and I am losing about 1-2 pounds a week. When I eat more I don't do so well. Everyone is different and I'm not going to force myself to eat just to get over 1200 calories. That's crazy to me. Your body has a way of telling you to eat hungry so if your not feeling it don't do it.

Thanks for that l agree..I do eat every 2-3 hours throughout the day so l am keeping my body in fuel so that l do not burn out and l am very fit and on the go all day long with 3 kids and work to keep me busy and l am very happy eating around 1200 or least.

I am not going to eat the calories that l am burning l find that not right, why burn calories if you are only going to eat them back?

Because your body NEEDS fuel to burn. I know it sounds totally backwards, but I wasn't eating enough either and put my body into starvation mode. Now, I consume anywhere from 1600-2300 calories/day (depending on if I workout that day or not). The best way for me to do it is I have my calories set at maintenance and I eat back most of my exercise calories. You WILL lose weight at 1200 calories, but NOT forever. Eventually, your body will start to store everything you give it because it feels like it is starving. It is very impotant to eat especially if you are having high calories burns. I think are still not eating enough, and it takes your body a while to adjust.

i may be mistaken, but i think the whole "eat more to fuel your body" is for those working out pretty hardcore daily..... ??

she is recording over 1000 calories a day of exercise, so I think that counts.

No, it is for anyone who is working out. I thought MFP had my BRM set low, so I did some research myself. Come to find out - my BRM is 1430, not 1330, and I should be eating anywhere from 1900-2300 depending on if I workout that day or not. I was only consuming around 1400 calories and STAVING all the time (putting my body into starvation mode). I usually work out 3-4 days a week, so I don't do it everyday.

You need to eat more! Especially because you are over 40! You need to eat cleaner! You say you have more muscles now ....I dont see how this is possible when you are not losing any fat?

Just so you know, I have lost like you did, and I gained it all back over 9 years. Why? Because then I was starving my body of what it needed. I was never hungry, but I was starving. Will you lose weight? Yeah, will you have ill effects over time? Probably.

This is not an attack, this is just some one who did the same thing and is back.

Take care of yourself, the weight will come off in time.

Totally agree. Been there done that. Then I finally learned about nutiriton and exercise and learned how to lose weight eating well and exercising. Been successful again and for longer than ever.

Educate yourself on exercise and nutrition and you will one day understand.

What exercises are you doing? I took a look at your diary and noticed you are burning about 1000 calories a day extra in exercise. I have a fit bit that helps me get an idea of the number of calories I am burning while exercising and you have to be REALLY working it to be burning that many calories. It could be possible that you are over estimating your calorie burn and when you ate back your exercise calories you were actually over eating.

That being said...you need to be eating more. But not just eating any old thing. When someone says you need to eat more you need to consume more healthy calories. The candy calories are not good fuel for your body. Once I learned that the calorie deficit was not the way to lose weight and keep it off and started consuming more healthy calories the weight just started to fall off. You need the fuel to feed your muscle and ultimately melt the fat.

I think you guys need to relax a little, I have looked at her diary too. I think her exercise is wayyy over rated so I don't think she is "starving herself" per say...

Example. last Sunday, she put in her exercise diary she did 30 day shred 3x, she may have hit enter 3x because of internet connection etc, but I highly doubt she did it 3x in one day....

Before you make judgement calls on someone's diary, actually look at the dang thing... and don't just take "1067 calories burned" for face value..... a little sugar goes WAYYYYYYYYY further than vinegar...

OP: did you actually do the Jillian Michaels workout 3 times on Sunday ?

You have to net close to 1200 a day. I net about 1150-1200 every single day. You body: brain...muscles..have to work! Youre harming yourself if your net isnt at that goal.

One question...how the heck are you burning numbers like 1125 with workouts?!

Today I did the 30 day shred, 20 minutes rebounding on a mini-trampoline and went for a long walk + did extra resistance and that was around 350-400 calories!?

    Something isn't adding up there.

That could be where you're going waaaaay wrong! Because if you were actually burning that much, and eating so little, you'd be in starvation mode and will be losing a serious amount of muscle, water along with a small amount of fat.

If someone wants to lose 40lbs of 'weight' they can cut off their leg, but they wont look how they want to look, will they? Think BODY FAT, not WEIGHT ON SCALE.

Best way to start a fight on the internet: Forget politics and religion, talk about your opinions on losing weight.

    1) Should she eat more? Maybe. Probably.

    2) Will she lose weight eating the way she is? Obviously yes. The biggest myth I see on these boards is that you can eat too little to lose any weight. As a general statement, that is crazy talk. Anorexia-stricken people do not have any trouble getting skinny. People in forced labor camps aren't flabby. Use your brains, folks. You can eat too little for health, you can slow your metabolism down, you can have increased difficulty losing weight at the same speed as your metabolism lowers, but no, you can't net 500 calories a day and not lose fat. If you are genuinely netting 500 calories a day and not losing weight, you are a medical MIRACLE or simply underestimating your calorie intake or overestimating your TDEE.

    3) Long term, it is better to deficit 500 calories a day (of total burned, not your BMR, folks), not as many as you can per day. A great calorie deficit might trigger your body to try to make up for it in ways that will eventually sabotage your weight loss plan. Additionally, the less you eat, the more likely it is that you miss out on important vitamins and enzymes that are difficult to get back through pills and enriched drinks.

She will burn more because she is heavier than you, the exact same workout burns completely different amounts depending on what you weight, extra weight means extra effort to do the same moves...
