    Hello, all!

Thanks for all the support! It helps! I saw an Insanity infomercial at lunch today! Now I'm really stoked! Despite my nutritional slide, I'm still very dedicated to the fitness and have gotten my BIL and SIL on the bandwagon! They start P90X on Monday!!

Stiring- thanks for the comments! I know you'll love:heart: P90X! I, too, love scary movies! What are your favs? My dh and I like to watch campy B horror flicks around Halloween! Speaking of wine, going to a new wine bar in town- mixed reviews but the renovation is gorgeous and I enjoy trying new places!

sing- the concert sounds wonderful. Let me know if you ever perform farther East!!!

Speaking of Bavarian Hefeweize.. any good beer place recommendations in southern Bavaria? We'll be traveling from Chiemsee to Garmish-P, with side trips.

    Enjoy the weekend!!!

I want to go to Garmisch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   One of the most beautiful places in the world!!! Love it!! Enjoy!! :drinker: :drinker:

Hefeweizen, Hefeweizen, Hefeweizeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnn Hefeweizeeeeeeeeeeeen Heeeeeefeweizeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen I was singing it!!!  yummy!! :drinker: :drinker:

Stiring, I think I am going to do P90X soon. I would love to join you. One of my coworkers has it and she is interested in ChaLean so we might swap programs in the next two weeks!! :drinker: :drinker: Let's see if it works out. Some people tend to change their minds. It would be great cause it will not cost either one of us anything.

Aprilvet, I know exactly what you mean. I too have not been making great choices in the past couple of months. Summers are wonderful to do outdoor activities but it comes to eating it could be disastrous for me with all the eating out at the amusement parks, picnics, BBQs, ice cream, etc. I lack the discipline that Stiring has. Stiring, I would have eaten the two leftover brownies at the same time telling myself I shouldnt. That happens to me too often. I don't know what it is, I need an intervention.

Cardigirl, how are you doing? Glad to hear from you. I am also struggling with eating so many carbs and I still feel bloated when I eat over 100g of carbs. I felt much better when I was eating more protein, less carbs. I cant blame my "weight gain" to the increase of carbs, I have been overindulging lately, but I do have the bloated feeling, the pooch pushing out. But I also know that I need those carbs to sustain those long runs. Today I did 12 miles of run/walk intervals, I was out there for 2.5hrs. I burned 1,192 calories!! :noway: I could not do that if I was not eating that many carbs.

Sing, happy singing!! I do love Beethoven as well. I took a music class in college and I absolutely loved it. I used to sing when I was younger, I was in the church choir. I was a soprano. Now I just sing in my house and sometimes karaoke when I feel brave enough.

    Have a great evening!! :flowerforyou:

Oh, Stiring, I like scary movies as well but I do get very scared... Last night we started watching The Haunting in Connecticut but my husband fell asleep. I had to turn it off. We are watching it tonight. Did you see The Uninvited? It is good. :flowerforyou:

    Good morning!

Well, I survived Beethoven!! Doing 2 concerts in one day is sure tough! I left the house before lunch and got home at 10:30 pm. The concerts were full houses, which is nice. We ate at Iron Hill Brewery-Restaurant in Lancaster, next to Franklin & Marshall College. Wonderful food & beer. I had Ahi Tuna and washed it down with a Bavarian Rauchweiss Beer (smoke wheat). Rauchbier comes from Bamberg in Bavaria. FYI: Bamberg is a city of 70,000 and has 9 breweries, more than Munich (6).

April, speaking of beer...I've had a few (actually quite a few) Bavarian beers!!! :drinker:
In those areas you will usually find Augustiner and Stiegl Bier from Salzburg, and the big 6 from Munich. Awwww...too bad, huh? ALL of them are GREAT!!! Just ask for a beer and you will get something special.

Note: If you see "Radler" on the beer list, it is a mixture of beer and a soda which tastes like Sprite. Radler means "bicyclist" in German, and the theory is that by mixing the soda with beer, they could drink more without falling off their bikes. (serious)!!

Unlike here in the USA, Germans usually serve only what is available locally, so feel confident to just order "ein Bier, bitte"!!! (or einmal Bier or noch ein Bier) another...another...:drinker:

Remember: Helles=light (in color) Dunkles=dark (in color) Darkness does not mean stronger in alcohol, just a different grain roasting process.

My next German trip in the end of May next year, can't wait!

My next German trip in the end of May next year, can't wait!

RUB IT IN :grumble: :grumble:

Does anyone have a simple but tasty recipe for fluffy whole wheat pancakes? Every time I make whole wheat pancakes they gooey and not so tasty. And how about the sodium? It is usually high for pancakes. Anyone has any recipe secrets? Stiring?

I am planning on doing some ChaLean today with some extra squats and throw in some cardio. I also need to clean this house. :grumble: :grumble: So, lots of things to do today.

    Have a great Sunday! :flowerforyou:

So many scary movie lovers! Not me! I hate being scared. Suspense, maybe, but horror films stay with me tooooo long, so it's best not to watch them. Although. lately I've been watching "Dexter" repeats, because I can Tivo those and fast forward through the icky parts. It's a great show if you don't mind that the lead is a serial killer.

Alf, the extra carbs are tough to get in, especially when I reach my fat limit earlier in the day, but I'm learning to balance it out and it's less trouble than before. The tough part is having 500 calories left in the day and only 4-6 grams of fat and protein. I miss meat, like you, but I do work out a lot and need the carbs. I don't feel particularly puffy from them. My trainer probably consumes 3000 calories or more a day and he said that he and all the other trainers have the same problem of what to eat when all you have left is carbs. Baked sweet potatoes!:drinker: They solve everything! Heh. Good thing l love them.

However, before switching my percentages I would have made scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese and spinach and felt like I was eating right. Oh well, like I said, I'm going to follow it for a bit longer and see if my body starts responding to it better. Plus, I haven't been the best at sticking to it this weekend. LOL. Dinner out on Friday and then a hamburger on the grill last night. But it was YUMMY!

Alf, you look amazing! What you are doing is working! And Swiss, love your new picture. You look great too!

And Sing, all the beer talk is making me thirsty!

Hope everybody has a great Sunday!

Alf, here's a recipe for whole wheat pancakes that sounds pretty good. It uses yogurt for part of the liquid and the reviews seem pretty universal on the taste and composition. Hope that helps. Guess I'll be getting some Bob's Red Mill whole wheat flour.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one!

Alf- you'll love P90X! Go for it! I ordered Insanity yesterday, so I'll have something new to get rid of the "beer gut" I'll bring back after all of my indulging! Actually, we plan on hiking a lot, walking everywhere, and some cycling as well. Plus, I'm brining my running shoes to log a few miles in the morning when I can. Got a great pair of Merrels for the hiking! Snazy! (is that really a word?? )

Went to a new wine bar last night. Had lots of fun! Noshed our way through appetizers and cheese with wines by the glass. Yummmmm!:drinker:

Kenpo for today. Did legs and back plus ab ripper yesterday. It was really hard!:grumble: No rhyme or reason for those days.

    sing- thanks for the advice!

alf- my whole wheat pancakes always seem too dense.:grumble: PS- have neglected to say how great you look!!!!

cardigirl- no problem for me to get in extra carbs!!! Oh, you probably don't mean a glass of beer!!! Seriously, try hummus with baby carrots!!

Have a good day, all! I have to go start packing for the trip. dh took the kids to the Camden Aquarium for the morning.

    Good morning everybody!

singfree, I'm happy the singing went well. :drinker: I'm glad you went out and celebrated. I, too, am jealous both you and aprilvet are going to be visiting Europe soon. :grumble: But I'm planning a Mediterranean cruise for next autumn (my mother turns 80 in January, and this is what she wants to do....so I agreed to go with her), so that will be a nice return to places like Italy for me. I hope. I'm not a boat person.......:ohwell:

alf, I haven't seen The Uninvited yet, though it's tops on my Netflix list. I love scary movies, though I have to make sure I watch them at the right time or I can't sleep. I'm prone to really bad nightmares, so when my husband is away for any period of time, horror flicks are not on my list of things to watch. But next time he has an evening out, I'll get The Uninvited!

And I've never made whole wheat pancakes. I bought a mix recently from Whole Foods (pancake mix with flax) but I haven't tried it. If anybody wants a terrific recipe for apple/pecan muffins using whole wheat flour, though, let me know. They are healthy and some of the best muffins I've ever made/eaten.

And, alf, I hope you get a chance to join me on the P90X journey!! :drinker: That would be fun!

cardigirl, when I get a chance, I'm going to re-listen to a part of that lecture I was talking about with how women metabolize carbs, and I'll let you know more about what I learn. I'm not surprised there isn't much about that on the internet since I don't get the sense that the more physiological truths about nutrition are interesting enough to populate the internet. Listening to this series of lectures has been fascinating for busting some myths I had, and I trust this professor because she is one person who I believe isn't actually trying to sell something.

Regarding all the diet myths out there (like not to eat grains), I really try to follow the logic to see if it makes sense. I still like Michael Pollen's philosophy the best, and it is the one that I try to implement on a daily basis: Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants and fruits. (or something like that). That just seems so easy to me....and it makes the most sense to me. I don't really pay much attention to any of my macronutrients (though I do monitor my sodium content) and, very naturally, they kind of fall into a 40/30/30 breakdown for me. I feel good and had good results....so I go with it.

alf, I kind of have the opposite problem of you at social events. Last night we were at a BBQ, and I had lots of calories I could have eaten. But I was conservative on what I took of the food (but had two glasses of wine!) and came home to figure out I'd only eaten something like 1500 calories yesterday (with the wine!) I just am hesitant to eat something when I don't know what is in it. I need to get over this!

It was funny because yesterday morning I weighed myself (99.3 :grumble: ) and told my husband about it. So he was moving the scale around the bathroom to figure out where it would weigh me the heaviest. I wasn't really pleased when he was doing this at first, but he told me he didn't want me to be too worried about my weight being too low (as opposed to my initial thinking was him trying to tell me he didn't think I was as thin as what I think I am). Now, I'm just laughing about it. I weighed 99.5 this morning, so it didn't really do any good.

At the party last night, I had a number of people tell me that I need to stop losing weight. I totally agree at this point. But I also had alot of people talking to me about fitness. P90X is so popular, and most were asking me about that. I'll be anxious to do this program so I can answer the questions more accurately than I can right now. But it made me feel better that, while people think I'm skinny (their word, not mine), they also see me as fit.

I'm going to do a full body strength workout today. One week until P90X. Yay! :drinker: Hope everybody has a great day.

Hey April! Thanks! I love hummus, however, 50% of its calories come from fat, so I have to limit my intake of that, LOL... Yes, it's good fat, but still counts in the fat grams. Sigh. This is so confusing.

Stiring, I try to eat mostly plants and fruit (also plants) but are grains included as plants? They grow in the ground! See what I mean? I just get dizzy sometimes thinking about it all. LOL.

I appreciate you telling me about the lectures. It is fascinating how the body responds to modern food.
Been listening to a lecture about HFCS and Fructose on Youtube. Wow. I'm thinking just getting rid of sugar would solve a whole lotta problems.

Alf, everytime I make whole wheat pancakes they are dry. And then we put more butter and syrup on them, so they end up being unhealthy.

card, I need to try that recipe. Anything with yogurt in it has to be yummy.

Alf, my son is trying the P90X. He called me to ask if I had heard of it. I told him that many here were using it. His girlfriend has been put on a low glycemic diet due to an allergy. They are both trying to eat healthier and lose some weight.

I took off on my daughter's bike today. That is what she gets for leaving it here. Might as well get some use of it. I rode for 30 minutes. Such fun!!!! Hadn't been on a bike in years. We have a wonderful bike trail right up the road from us that goes on for miles.

    Good morning!

Getting old really stinks! My left knee is a bit tender and my left calf is sore! I will work around it, as I refuse to stop the Insanity (sounds like Susan Powter)!! :grumble:

Swiss, glad to hear about the biking. It's a great way to stay in shape.

April, when are you leaving? Have you nailed down your itinerary? Enjoy the Bier!! :drinker:

Alf, if you were luckier at the casino, we would all be going on a pub crawl through Bavaria!! I can see it now..."40+ Club's Excellent Bavarian Adventure"...sounds like a winner to me!! Alf, if you decide to join Stiring in P90X, you will love it! Enjoy!

Stiring, it really sounds like you are chomping at the bit to start P90X. Are you going to use weights and a pullup bar or bands? For me, the best measurement of strength gains came from the pullup bar. When I started, I could barely do any. Now I can knock off multiple sets of 10. I think it was a combination of strength and weight loss. Naturally, you do not want to lose weight. Don't forget that to add muscle weight you need to eat more. And some of the weight gain will probably be a small amount of fat, which is quite normal for people looking to put on some muscle weight. I'm also trying to maintain a 40/30/30 ratio in my diet. It doesn't always work, but it is a goal.

BTW: I can't watch scary movies. I have trouble sleeping through the night now. I don't need nightmares! My wife makes me watch Stacy & Clinton on "What Not To Wear"...that's scary enough!

LOL at Sing and being afraid of Stacy and Clinton. I adore them! The real question, Sing, is are you picking up any good tips on how to dress?

I too hate having the odd twinges and pain that seems to come with the workouts we're doing. Be sure you are stretching appropriately after your workouts. That seems to go a long way towards reducing muscle strain and pain for me. And I do ice things often, if the pain deems it.

I'm ready to sign up for the "40+ Club's Excellent Bavarian Adventure" any time! That would be such a hoot! Drinking and laughing our way through the most gorgeous scenery ever,

Great workout today. The trainer told me that he thought getting my weight to 150 was probably as low as he wants me to go, given that my BF% is already at 21%. So...we'll see what the doctor says about that next month, but if at 150 I can wear clothes I feel good in and feel strong and healthy, I guess I'm gonna be happy about that.

Sign me up for Bavaria too!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

We went to my father-in-law's 83rd birthday. He's got quite the will to live. Earlier in the year he had several visits to the hospital, and on one of our visits to his house, he could only handle two of us visiting for 1/2 hour, and for his party he had about 12 people for three hours.

I predict the 40+ club with their commitment to a healthier lifestyle, will celebrate as many and many more birthdays!

Cardi, LOL, not Stacy & Clinton...the "before" makeover contestants!!! I wear better things to Halloween parties!

The Insanity workouts include a lot of stretching before & after. The constant pounding from jumping, etc...is causing the pain. Not too bad, just enough to make the workouts even more miserable :grumble: . I find that ice helps (ice cold beer). :drinker:

Zebras, you can come along if you can pronounce this simple German word:

    Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft.

I can pronounce that word, singfree, but I'm not so sure I know what it means. In fact, I'm not so sure I want to know! But join me up for the Great Bavarian Adventure. I know just enough German to get me in and out of restaurants and wine bars. In fact, my German is much better when I am drinking. :drinker:

Yes, singfree, I am chomping at the bit to start P90X. I am just excited to see what different changes it will make to my body. And, of course, after that I have Insanity to look forward to....and then another 6 month STS rotation with new cardio for that program from Cathe Friedrich. So I have my next year of fitness planned out, and I'm ready to get started.

Unfortunately, I still can't do pull-ups/chin-ups because I don't have full range of motion in my left arm (yet). But six months ago, I couldn't dream of doing one push-up on my toes because my left arm couldn't support it/didn't have the motion to do that. And now I do them on my toes all the time. So I'm hoping with P90X and another rotation of STS under my belt, I might be able to incorporate pull-ups into my routine.

cardigirl, I re-listened to that lecture on carbs and women. Pretty much what she said is that carb loading doesn't work for women because women can metabolize fat more effectively than men. In other words, we pull from fat stores sooner into a workout than men do, so (and she specifically made this point) eating additional carbs doesn't make women perform any better in their fitness routine. So...there you have it. I don't think there is any harm in keeping your carbs so high, but if you need to lower them because you don't like the results, I wouldn't be worried about it.

I've been watching a little of that video about sugar that was posted on this site (about 1/3 of it so far). cardigirl, don't let all the information out there about food confuse you. I don't know what the whole bit lately is about grains (is it an anti-carb thing?) because last time I checked, wheat is a plant. So what's the problem?

Anyhow, this is the way I boil it down. Let's say I like to have oatmeal and an English Muffin for breakfast, with a little pb&j on that English Muffin. I have a choice. I can have instant oatmeal (with additives), a white English Muffin (refined grains and additives), Jif PB (additives) and Smuckers jelly (high in sugar) OR I could have old fashioned oats (no additives), a whole grain Muffin, natural PB and lower sugar jelly. The breakfasts are the same....but the impact on my body is significantly different. So I don't necessarily think about the type of food I'm eating as much as I think about the quality of the food I'm eating. And if there is no quality in the food (like, say, in soda), I generally opt not to have it. So that takes out alot of the guessing for me.

I'll take the example of fruit. There are alot of people who say to only eat certain types of fruit because of the sugar content in fruit. I say....ridiculous! I am aware of the sugar content in fruit, and I'm aware of the calorie content in fruit. And I think it is best to keep consumption reasonable...as I do with ALL foods. However, I think by throwing fruit under the Sugar Bus, so many nutrients (like potassium in the sugar-laden banana) are also being tossed aside. So I say....eat fruit. Just don't eat endless amounts of fruit. But it's good for you...sugar or no sugar.

You might enjoy Michael Pollen's book 'In Defense of Food' because he really comes down hard on the part of the diet industry that focuses so much on micro-nutrients because it makes it seem like everybody needs a personal nutritionist just to compose a meal. And we shouldn't. We just need to be eating healthy foods that are tasty and good for us.

Anyhow, that's my take on the whole thing....for what it's worth (which isn't much! )

I did a good interval training this morning. I felt really strong this morning, so I pushed it hard....and had a great time.

Hope everybody is having a good day. :flowerforyou:
