I really like the pedometer I got from Weight Watchers. You can set your stride. It also tells you your mileage, as well as steps. BTW, I wore my ped. all day yesterday for a dry run, and walked over 1200 steps. I'm ready to begin this challeng.

I'll give it a try. I don't know that I can do 10,000 a day, but I will definitely increase my steps :). Thanks for the motivation.

tina219 - I would suggest start wearing your step counter now and see how many you do on a normal day. Then you can set a goal that is right for you. When I first started my "normal" day was 2,000 to 3,000 steps

Definitely don't feel like you have to hit 10,000 steps right away. Start off with your normal daily routine as a baseline, and try to add one or two short walks into your daily activities. Once you get comfortable with that, gradually build up - either by longer walks or by increasing your pace.

In case anyone is looking for pedometer recommendations, I've been very happy with my Omron HJ-113. It tracks aerobic steps and minutes walked as well as total steps, calories burned, and miles walked. It has a 7-day memory and automatically resets at midnight. It even survived a trip through the wash (note: I do not advocate washing your pedometer). And it's reasonably priced - I paid $28 in a retail store, but I've seen it around $23 online. (I've paid more for pedometers that were less accurate and less durable.)

A lot of my friends here love their FitBits, but I need to decide to figure out whether the added features justify the cost for me.

Anyone else have pedometers that they're happy with?

I've got the same Omron and it's served me well for over 2 years now. I toyed with the idea of replacing it with a Fitbit but decided I couldn't justify the expense when my humble little pedo is still going strong and tracks everything I need.

I'll give it a go but I can't post daily, will post weekly when the fitbit updates. Using the fitbit has really challenged me to get to 5000 steps daily so next challenge is 10,000 steps daily. So far top day has been 8000 something.

I will continue. I love this challenge it has really helped me to be more active and increase my steps. I would suggest anyone that is thinking of joining to go ahead and just set a reasonable goal and keep increasing it.......

I'm in - I just use an app on my phone. Distance seemed pretty accurate to what my odometer trip meter said when I drove it....

 I have an Omron HJ-720ITC.......I've had it for over a year and I love it........it does all the usual stuff and can be connected to my computer to download the data so I can see my steps back to when I first got it....I can track averages for the week, month, year. and how my steps are spread out hour by hour during the day to see where my sit down and active times are.

 since I've been doing this for awhile (and I'm retired and have time to walk a lot) so my goal is higher and I continue to challenge myself...when I reach the day's minimum goal I put a sticker on the calendar I have hanging in the bathroom.....my real goal is get even higher than my minimum and to keep increasing my monthly average.

I'm in for another month. I received my Fitbit a few days before the May challenge began and it really encouraged me to walk more. If I was close to a goal, I would even walk back and forth from one end of the house to the other before bed just to reach goal that day. I'm going to leave my daily goal the same, but increase total for the month from 250,000 to 275,000. I went over by about 8,000 last month so this gives me a slightly higher goal to work towards!

Goal: 7,500 steps a day / 275,000 steps in June

I'm in! I've never done this before, though, so please pardon my ignorance but do we just copy the template people have suggested (one day per line) and add a new post every day with the additional steps?

If so, here's mine (I'm in Australia so my 1st of June is already over):

6/1 -9791 (not quite there, but not bad considering I wasn't aware of this challange until just now!)

That is what most of us do.

Being in Australia you are the first to post steps for June!

This is not only my first post but also my first challenge  super excited. I have been using footsteps on my phone but am thinking about upgrading to a real pedometer, does anyone have any suggestions for an accurate one? I have two fairly cheap ones (bell brand & curve brand) and they are 200 steps away from each other and neither match the one on my iphone...

No two pedometers are going to match each other exactly - I'd even bet that two identical pedometers would probably have slightly different readings. A variance of 200 steps out of 10,000 (i.e., 2 percent) is not unreasonable. It's the ones that overcount or undercount by 50 percent or more that you have to watch out for.:noway:

    Welcome to the challenge! :drinker:
