A similar example, if I was at a party and saw someone eat a cupcake, would I come to that person and tell them they should eat an apple? Hell no!

However, if this person came up to me and asked whether she could count that cupcake as part of her fruit intake because there was strawberry flavouring, I would make my opinion known.

So, if someone was logging whatever their activities were, and people started criticizing the person about what they were logging, then I would tell these folks to back off.

But when the person asks a question in the forum, they should expect some people who will voice a dissenting opinion. It should not be viewed as being "judgmental."

Of course, the problem lies with the fact that for the people who do log everything but didn't make the specific post, they may feel that they are being judged.

Not sure what the solution is.

So if someone was interfering in somebody's business without being asked, you would respond by .... Interfering in somebody's business without being asked?

Yes, me saying "Stop interfering in this person's business" is so hypocritical and evil!!!

If the original poster wanted me to stop, then I would. But until then, if I think someone is being unfairly attacked/criticized, I'll attempt to defend.

I work full time (sat at a desk for the majority of the day, so my "movement" is fairly sedantary), I walk to work (I include that as my exercise) I also include my 2 hours of walking round a supermarket once a week, doing my shopping - yes I know it takes a long time, but I'm walking round with my Dad and he doesnt go that quickly anymore, besides, I get to spend a couple of hours with him extra a week!

I do my cleaning on a weekend, we have a 3 storey house, so yes, I am going to log the cleaning because it does take a long time to do - especially when you're hoovering the 2 flights of stairs and having to manouvre the hoover up with you .

I also log my "walking upstairs" every day, when I'm at work and at home - I'm a smoker (Yes I know - spawn of all evil :glasses: ) and I smoke outside, so everytime I want a smoke, I go up or down a flight or 2 of stairs. And sometimes, when no-ones around at work, I will run up the stairs to get my heart going a bit more.

If people want to log those sort of "exercise" then why shouldnt they - it all counts, does it not? And not everyone will eat back those calories they've earnt! :flowerforyou:

My activity level is set to sedentary so I log most physical activity. Some days I don't do any exercise so I log nothing but other days, like yesterday, I logged because I walked 4 miles @ 3.5mph, I mowed the lawn, I clipped the hedge, I loaded/unloaded/hung out 3 wash loads, I ironed those 3 wash loads so yes, of course I logged it.
So far today I'm still in bed but have been to the loo twice and made 3 cups of tea. Have I logged that? Of course not.
I very rarely eat back my exercise calories but I like to log it just so I know I'm doing something and that if I were to go over my 1200 daily cal's then I know I've got some in the reserve tank, so to speak.
Would I comment negatively on someone else's logging of exercise? Never in a million years. I have taken my exercise off my news feed because I was being critisied by an MFP 'friend' when I logged cooking because I'd been baking bread, all that kneading was definitely worth logging in my opinion but what difference does it make to someone else??
BTW I'm 111 and losing all the time so I'll carry on logging my cleaning, shopping, lifting, cooking and dog walking thank you very much.

I don’t care, to be honest just cannot give enough of a **** to care if someone else logs cleaning as an exercise or not. But people you need to chill.
People get all upset if you do log the hours spent cleaning, and at the same time the same people get all up in your face if you don’t log the 5 grapes you may have pinched off the cheese board. If the extra few calories from a few stolen grapes make so much difference to how fast they lose weight, then so would the extra few calories they have used cleaning their house.

I don't care what they log, but I consider logging certain everyday, ordinary-exertion activities to be a form of denial. It's not adequate. An obese woman once told me that her "exercise" was grooming a horse.

If you need to lose weight you have to engage in vigorous exercise several times a week, preferably, five to six times a week, plain and simple.

All the rest is dumbing down.

When i'm logging religiously, I do include those grapes

For me I choose to let other "physical activities" like cleaning, walking my dog around the block etc. as extra. These are activities that I do all the time and they aren't for losing weight or staying fit. I specifically work out for that and I log those calories only. But really to each their own, however, I think they may be cheating themselves since MFP overestimates calories as it is.

I don't log exercise for football coaching as some of the time I'm just walking around - I certainly wouldn't log day to day chores and I don't understand why anyone would!

But then again, I don't understand why anyone likes Adam Sandler films, or X factor or the theatre so each to their own!

No you don't, you just have to eat less cal than you burn
    It really is that simple.
As for dumbing down, No, everyone has to do it their way, a way that works for them, for you going to the gym or engaging in vigorous exercise works, for others Not so much.

    Edit
Some people eat real food, others eat Protein bars in place of real food, something I've never understood, Some people make house work work for them, others pay $$$ to go to a gym to sit on a cycle and go nowhere, again something I've never understood. You don't have to understand, you just either ignore or accept.

Once again....our ancestors used chores as exercise, so why shouldn't people on MFP?????

I don't care what people log, and I do log cleaning when it's above and beyond normal household duties, but...

Our ancestors chores weren't the same as ours. They scrubbed clothes on a washboard or boiled them in huge caldrons, took rugs outside to beat the dirt out of them, mopped with a heavy rope mop, washed dishes by hand, would hunt, fish, butcher their own livestock and pick their own crops for dinner, walked everywhere unless they hooked up the horses to a buggy, etc. No washing machines, no vacuums, no Swiffers, no dishwasher, no package of chicken tenderloins or perfect cuts of steak or ready to cook veggies from the grocery store, no cars.

I would love to know your definition of 'real food'!

I eat protein bars for snacks as it gives me the macros I need and they are handy when I'm out and about. They taste 'real', I have to use 'real' money to buy them and the calories contained are 'real' Why do you not consider bars packed with nutrients, vitamins and high quality protein 'real'?

If I do full house cleaning, I will log the calories but adjust it and just count half of it. I sit all day for work and I don't vacuum, mop, run up and down 2 flights of steps daily so I believe it is okay to count it.
People find it very easy to be rude on the computer. It always amazes me. If you disagree with their way of thinking you get bashed for it. God forbid you mention Dr. Oz! :grumble:

If you want to log it, that's fine. It's a personal choice. I choose to only log actual exercise. I don't log in my cleaning, walking around, cooking, grocery shopping, etc. These are all physical activities but obviously not enough so for me to consider logging. If these burned any significant amount of calories for me I'd be thin already.

I am not opposed to someone disagreeing but there is no need to insult another person for thinking a different way... that is where the problem lies.

If your settings are "sedentary" and you don't normally break out a sweat/increase your heart rate similarly as you would with other forms of exercises, then log it.

If you're logging it so you feel better about eating more, than you probably shouldn't log it.

This! I don't take it personally if you log every little thing you do- but don't do it just to get to eat more...because more than likely you AREN'T burning as many calories as MFP tells you you are. I have my settings set to lightly active so if I log every move I make then I feel like I'm double logging. I mean, if you log cooking, cleaning, etc...then should you also log every step you take? sleeping? Where does it stop? haha

I'm with you! when i looked at the MFP 'light activity' it gave me 350kcal a day extra!? so i set myself to sedentry and add back anything that is activity over 5minutes in duration (anything under is a bonus)... im usually naughty and dont count enough time (underestimate), but i seems to be working!?, and if my weighloss slows or something than i'll change it again! You've just got to listen to your body!

ps. feel free to add me as a 'friend who counts cleaning!'

Maybe this person is getting around to the fact that protein bars are processed. I have heard several people in my lifetime say that processed foods even when full of nutrients aren't the best way to get nutrients. I've read this nutrition books as well. They usually say that eating non processed natural foods is the best way to go. Maybe that's all she's getting at.

I log stuff like going to the grocery store, and nobody has mentioned anything about it to me, but taking 3 kids to the grocery store (7, 4 & 15 months) is a workout, anyway you slice it. I am contantly running after someone, ,lifting, bending, etc.

When I am doing chores, I am also half the time holding my clinging 16 month old. And I don't do chores on a regular basis.... I work full time with 3 kids & one of my days off we do nothing but fun stuff. The other day is my power morning of every chore you can imagine. I don't sit down on my days off until the kiddos are asleep. I am constantly moving!

If people don't agree with what you log, I say they don't have to look at it.

Log what you want, and good luck to you!!

Also, the past few times I have neeed to lose weight (i.e. after having kids) I haven't been able to exercise vigorously.... I don't have the time. And just cutting calories and my regular activity has always been enough for a steady 2-4 lb weight loss a week, which is fine for me.

I don't know why either - people seem to take it as a personal affront if someone else logs something that does't involve lycra or Jillian Michaels or a gym membership.
    hahah... I love it.

What I understand less than any other aspect of this "debate" is how so many people have the energy and time to care so much about what everyone else is doing. I have MFPs to encourage them and be encouraged. I don't see it as my place to tell them how they should be doing this unless and until they ask. (And believe me, I've no shortage of opinions!)

And whether or not someone logs it and provides another the opportunity to whine about it, they've burned the same number of calories. Just sayin'.
