I'm wondering what a lot of you ladies (and some of you men) expect to do if you found an intruder... if it comes down to hand to hand combat, you are pretty much screwed, even with your knife/bat/frying pan/dog. Unless of course you've been trained in hand to hand combat (go you!) or had close weapons training.

Guns even the playing field (although obviously proper training is still required).

And... who's protecting the children while mom is fighting the bad guy, and who will protect them when mom gets knocked out? Do kids know what to do in that kind of situation? Has it ever been discussed as a family? Drills, rally points, who does what?

I have trained in control tactics. Two of my dogs are also trained in protection work. One is currently a working dog ( although he may be working during one of these scenerios so wont be there to help, but if I call for help, i know he is responding)
If we are both home, someone is in serious trouble and its not us.
I dont rely on my dogs as protection, only deterrants. But seriously, if someone is brave enough to try to come in with my GSD barking, I am in serious trouble. He is pretty intimidating. But at least i am now aware. I am also trained in firearms and have at least one although it is stored according to the law here.
    We have no kids.

I see where you are coming from and I agree. I am going to "check it out" but thatbdoesnt necessarily mean confront the threat. What action I take would depend on what I was confronted with.
  • I used to be the first type of person. Lol. That's when I was afraid of the dark. But I've gotten over that fear and now I'm the second type. Plus I have a machete. So bring it on. Lol.

Breaking into my house is like entering Dracula's castle. You become my play thing before being eaten alive.

    Which one are you?

When you hear a noise outside late at night, do you:

Freeze and be quiet. Maybe pull the covers over your head, and hold your breath?

Get up and "decide which gun to take to" check it out?

    fixed that for you..

    fixed that for you...

9/10 I go check it out. Usually unarmed. If on my own - I make sure I have my stainless steel rolling pin to hand - heavy enough to knock em out for a short while. lol

Otherwise, I may freeze, listen and assess whether its worth it or not. Done that before when I've left the bedroom window open to hear a noise - to find it was a hedgehog outside in the rubbish bag! lol.

I get up grab my mini Drako AK47 with the 30 round clip and go looking for something to shoot. If it is somewhere else, I grab my Remmington shotgun with 00 buckshot, with a round already racked in for good measure and go looking for something to shoot. BTW the sound of a shotgun getting racked is a sound that will instill fear into most men and women, however, I would rather not give my position away. I would rather them if they are there to just see the flash and hear the boom before they go to meet their maker. Just saying.

    Translation = I have a small penis.

No matter what the size of my penis is, at least I wouldnt send my significant other to check while I cowered under the covers. heheh

Seriously. A firearm isn't a toy and only severely sick people would ever hope to use it on another human.

By the way, in most states you must tell the intruder that you are armed (or rack the shotgun) and let them run away or at least not shoot them in the back. Would you really rather kill another human if the noise would make them run away? Come on now.

I am a huge believer in everyone being armed and defending your home and family but you MUST be responsible! A weapon IS a big deal and you should treat it with respect.

Maam, I havent ever had to shoot or kill anyone, I however have had guns pulled on me and I have pulled guns on people so I know and respect every weapon I own. I also respect human life, BUT if someone in the middle of the night breaks into my home, I have a responsibility to protect my wife and myself. I live in Texas and the Castle Doctrine is law here. I will do whatever it takes to stop the threat that is in front of me to protect my family.

Now I'm the guy who checks it out..

For awhile I was the guy who carefully tip-toed downstairs and checked it out.
    But it was always nothing.

So for awhile i was the guy who rolled over and went back to sleep.
Then One night I heard something rolled over went back to sleep and found
out the next morning my bike had been stolen.

At home I'll check it out with a good ol' wooden lousiville slugger unless my dogs bark, then I grab the gun.

At college there are always noises going on at night haha so I tend to ignore most of them.

Get up (with a blunt object of course) and check it.
Because there's a small chance that it could be someone who needs help.

Let's test your theory. I'll tell you where I live and you can see if you can make it past Lola. Should be interesting.

Sigh. If you want to know what I would do... I would come by your house earlier in the day/week while I was staking it out and poison your dog. No more threat for whenever I choose to rob you. :brokenheart:

My post was a general observation. I'm sure some of you have truly vicious dogs (mine is a big ole ***** cat) and some of you are trained to neutralize a threat (awesome!). But typical soccer mom Jane up against a baddie intruder is probably not going to win, mama instinct and adrenaline accounted for. Baddie intruder is also fighting for his life when he sees a crazy woman in a nightie come after him, know what I mean?

I just think it's good to really think about it and have a plan. It's hard to think and make good decisions in high stress moments, the more you have a plan and already know what to do, the better off you are.

Obviously most of us will never go up against tactical teams trying to enter our homes and steal our kids... but I'd rather prepare for the worst and later find out it was only some crack addict after the TV.

I usually scream, "Shut Up and Go to Bed! If I hear one more peep out of either of you I'm coming in there to {insert creative action here}". Then I realize it was outside and think, "Oh crap."
