Random Compliments... Love them or think they are creepy?

I've been known to send random messages to people, both on MFP and online dating sites... even tell them in real life, just random things like "Your red hair is amazing! I love it!" Or " That is an awesome beard!" And that is it... I'm not trying to hit on them necessarily and don't even expect to get any kind of reply back... (What can I say, I have a thing for Gingers and lumberjacks  )

Do you like it when you get a random compliment like that? or Do you think it's creepy? I always thought it was fine but then lately friends have been telling me I'm going to be labeled as the town creeper if I keep telling every ginger in town that I love their hair. The only time I think it's creepy to get a random compliment personally is if they go for something awkward... like my boobs or something.

So what's the verdict? Like getting them or think they are creepy?

Depends is the person giving the compliment seem sincere, creepy, or nice. From you I would take it as a nice compliment from someone else.. lets say my father in law creepy creepy creepy

I don't find out of the blue compliments odd or creepy. I think society in many countries has moved to this unfortunate awkward point where people are hesitant to give and weird about recieving a casual compliment about their appearance. People immediately assume that person wants to to screw or something. I guess this gets me in trouble sometimes, I don't think it's odd to compliment someone as handsome or beautiful in a casual manner but I can see how it may be percieved at times.

Me personally, I'm indifferent. If someone compliments me, cool. If someone takes that and starts heavily coming on to me I'll tell them to piss off if they don't respect the fact I'm with someone. There is a difference though.

If it's a sincere compliment, and it's something kind then I love it! I had a random woman tell me I had great hair one day at Target. Just out of the blue, and it totally made my day! And another time I was standing in line at the bank and an older man, I'd say in his 60s or so, said to me "Pardon me, but you are just the prettiest thing I've seen all day." It was so sweet!

Now if it's some random internet message from a dude saying "nice boobs" or something, well, creep away, creeper.

    it depends on
    a. the context
    b. how attractive person complimenting me is( not gonna lie)
    c. what I am wearing

They are ALWAYS creepy at the gym, unless it's a woman impressed with me rocking my workout.

I love them! I worked really hard to get where I'm at--I'm happy with my physical appearance--absolutely give me some love if you are thinking it! I even appreciate wolf whistles when I'm running :P

I will also freely give compliments to strangers too though.

I think random compliments are great. I might be taken aback at first because nowadays they are so rare, but after the initial shock wears off, they make my day.

I almost always enjoy a compliment. However, content and context are important. In my situation being a young female, there is a large difference between a female coworker saying, " you look really nice today " and a male coworker saying " you look so sexy in that top." Inappropriate. Creepy would be a random guy coming up to me in the mall or something and telling me he was watching me from afar and couldn't help but notice my...blah blah blah.

lol kinda an extreme examples....but true nonetheless.
My point is, an appropriate compliment is very nice. I will never be upset about one.

Last fall I had some guy who was walking behind me on the sidewalk tell me how beautiful he thought my red hair was. I was actually glad that I had reached the coffee shop I was walking to because I did think it was rather creepy. I said thank you but I was still uncomfortable about it. He was one of the homeless guys who walks the streets and had crossed the street a block earlier to walk behind me.

It depends on who they are from. I used to work at a full serve gas station, and the regulars weren't used to a girl working there so I was always getiing compliments. But they were usually from gross old guys or just people over 30 in general. Since i ws 17-19 at the time, it was offputting and it just made me feel weird.
Now, on the rare times it was from someone nearer to my age..HAPPINESS! it makes me feel really good about myself.

Like others have said it would depend on the context and how its implied.
Having worked in the service industry, you tend to get a lot. For me its was often the eyes that were complimented so im not weirded out by it.
Once had an elderly lady tell me I had great skin tone (colour wise) It still makes me smile to think about it.
had a few great teeth comments which I always find funny....thanks I have a great dentist??
Weirdest one was from an older lady at work. She told me I had a great chest and asked me what kind of bra I wore.....???
  • Like others - it depends. If I can tell they aren't sincere..why even bother? I don't like being whistled at or called "sexy", but if you compliment me on my eyes, or my hair, or something I'm fine with it.

I was at a buffet last month, and a little old man was next to me and he looked up at me [6' here] and said, "You are just such a beautiful young woman!"

    Made my day. :D

I know... It's sad that you really have to almost stop and think anymore before you give a simple compliment without having to worry about how people are going to take it... This is part of the reason I love hanging around my latin friends... they just seem to be so much more open as a culture, and don't mind telling you if they like your hair or your eyes or your smile... We both know they aren't meaning it as a come on... they are just saying it to be nice... they are also however more likely to tell you that your house is dirty or that your cooking hasn't been so fabulous lately... At least with my friends... Oh well... I'll take the honesty :)... and btw... LOVE the beard! Not hitting on you or trying to be creepy... just sayin :)

I make an effort to find something I might compliment someone with.
  • I dunno. Send me a compliment and I'll tell you if its creepy or sweet!

If you are sincere, than it should come across as sweet. If you undress them with your eyes, while saying it, than it becomes creepy. I'm sure people apperciate it when you say something nice to them.:flowerforyou:

the Creepiness of a compliment is directly relative to how Attractive You find the giver of the compliment.

Having been sexually harassed at work, I'm going to say that it totally depends on the person, the intent and the circumstances.
