    Another Friday is here and I cannot quite believe how fast the week flies by.

    :flowerforyou: Jeannie the picture of me was taken when DH & I visited Mt Rushmore in September. I had to use my walking sticks to get around because of my knee issues but it was a wonderful time nevertheless. We did lots of hiking and the walking sticks work great.

    :flowerforyou: Vicki congrats on getting that darn scale to move. I understand your frustration because I am going through the same thing. However, I am not going to give in and you aren't either are you..at a girl:noway:

    Exercise today consists of a walk and some floor exercises with a side order of stationary bike thrown in for good measure:laugh:

    The other advice from the nurses was to not eat less than 1400 calories a day. While they liked the tour of MFP I gave them yesterday, they all expressed concern over my 1265 daily calorie allowance.

    Jeannie, most people include a lot of non-nutritious "stuff" in their 1200 calories so they probably don't get enough nutrition. If your 1200 calories are "nutrition dense" then you'll get all the nutrition you need. And if you exercise you'll add more calories to your total. I stuck close to 1200 calories for several months before I allowed myself to eat my exercise calories. I guess if the nurses want you to eat chocolate, then 1200 calories won't be enough to get all your nutrition:laugh: If someone includes a daily latte from the coffee shop as part of their calories, they won't get enough nutrition either.:laugh: :laugh:

    Now I'm off my soap box, and it's time to get ready to go to line dance.

    On 1400 vs. 1250 vs. some other number:

    There really isn't one magic number for everyone. I'm pretty short and have a small frame so what works for me isn't going to be enough for someone who is Amazonian. But their calorie recommendations would cause me to GAIN weight. In fact, before I got into endurance sports, my daily maintenance calories were around 1400, maybe 1500 tops. So clearly 1400 wouldn't be a good number for trying to lose weight for me!

    But now MFP says my BMR is something like 1100 when it's higher than that. So I have to adjust the activity level to one that gets me to my true maintenance calories without exercise (around 1600-1700 these day). If I didn't do that, MFP would be telling me to eat less calories than I need and I'd still be losing weight.

    But even though MFP is just an estimate and you may have to play with the numbers, if you are losing 1-2 lb. a week, that is generally agreed upon as a reasonable rate of loss if you aren't on a doctor supervised program.

    Plus, nurses who ply you with dark chocolate under the guise of being a health food clearly aren't the most educated on nutrition. :laugh:

    Actually, both of our nutritionists also recommend not less than 1400 calories a day too. I've been sticking with the 1265 that's my BMR is. But, it is hard. I'm loosing about a pound a month with is slow, but should be easier to keep off in the long run. My problem is that I eat my excercise calories too often.

    I do agree with MacMadane. Each person has to figure out what works for them. I am also short but big boned. If I got down to what the book says, I'd look like a walking skelaton.

    I ran around the house for 12 minutes today-six in each direction as our house has a circular pattern in it while I cooked dinner. It was one of those days where I couldn't excercise as planned. My dogs came with me but were perplexed about why I was running in circles. Still they did not want to be left out.

    Hi everyone,
    I am enjoying reading all the shares. I am back on crutches with the other knee and I have surgery scheduled for December 18th for my knee.:noway: :noway: I am also having a somewhat unexpected hysterectomy the 24th of this month.:noway: :noway: I would of liked to get everything done at once but that isn’t the way it’s done. I have lived my whole life with no surgery and bam things are giving out :huh: or falling from their rightful place:huh: left and right! I must be getting some kind of exercise on these crutches but it isn’t the same as walking 4 miles on my lunch hour with my Leslie Sansome CD. I am determined to stick to my clean eating and food tracking. I will continue to lose weight but with little or no exercise except hand weights and abs I have to adjust my loss expectations. I still plan on losing just not as fast. I did it through my last knee surgery so now I know it can be done. :heart: :heart: Next week is our 6th wedding anniversary and we are taking a trip up to Gold’s Beach the week-end. I found a lovely place, on the beach that takes dogs so the boys are going too. :bigsmile: :bigsmile: I will take my shakes and choose wisely when we go out to our special dinner.

    I like them alot! :smile: It is a great way to sneak a bit of exercise on days you just don't have time for a dedicated workout. I wear them when I go shopping or am cleaning house. It takes a little while to get used to the way you have to walk, rolling your foot from heel to toe with each step, but you soon forget about it and just do it. So far I've learned that 4 hours is about all I can comfortably wear them at at time. That's about when I start feeling like my toes need a break.

    We're experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures here today so I am planning to burn some calories working in my front flowerbed this afternoon.

    I'm thrilled to be able to report the scale is moving down again now that I'm home and back into my usual routine. It feels great to finally be past the halfway mark on my weight loss goal. Hopefully now that I have some muscle tone and better eating habits these last 25 pounds will come off faster than the first 31 did.

    I've done pretty well this week. Actually lost 2 lbs. Been exhausted since I've been back from vacation and back on the job so I'm doing very little physical exercise.....maybe getting in a short walk, that's about it. I work as a temp and this job will be over in a couple of weeks and I won't be working again until after New Years. So I'm hoping I'll be able to get back into an exercise routine while I'm off work.

    Sounds like all of you are doing good.....congrats to all.

    Shapeups are a relatively new kind of tennis shoes by Sketcher that mimic walking in the sand. My friend (who is now a size 6) had some when I visited her in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and I found a good buy on some while I was there. Supposedly designed to improve circulation and help you tone your back, abdomen, buttocks and calves... Other manufacturers probably make something similar. They come in several styles but mine look like this:

    Lianne- Good luck with your upcoming surgeries. Trying to loose weight and being on crutches has got to be hard. It will just come off slower. Your dogs are lucky they get to go on vacation.

    Suzy- We've got some of that good weather too. So, we will both be outside working in the yard today.

    SheilaJane- Gratz on the 2 lbs!

    I got up early this morning and already did 40 minutes of strength training and yoga. I plan to work outside today and get rid of some weeds around the house. Hopefully, the day will include walking the dogs.

  • Hello, everybody,

    Seems like there's no time to write during the week when I'm teaching every day and teaching piano or running errands afterward, but I still read the posts and I enjoy hearing what everyone is up to.

    This was a particularly hard week, and yesterday capped it off with a very nasty email from a parent who didn't like her daughter's music grade. It was very condescending and demeaning to me personally. It made me very upset, but, of course, we can't let that show so I responded very kindly and firmly. I used a figure of speech - "It's unfortunate that it took the threat of losing her patrol belt to finally remind her to bring in her materials for music class." (She had gone the entire first quarter without bothering to bring her music materials, only brought them when the safety patrol sponsor reminded her that poor grades result in suspension from the patrol force). So the mother immediately came back with "If you're going to threaten my daughter then blah, blah, blah." There was never a threat, of course, and I never dreamed that she would take my words and turn them around on me like that. I ended up changing the grade and thanking the mother for her concern!:angry: Had to cc the assistant principal over all of it. I hope I've heard the last of it now.

    That would have been the kind of day that would send me straight to the refrigerator before MFP. Instead I went to Happy Hour with some other teachers, took my own healthy snacks, and had a very light beer, so stayed within my calories. I came home and made a big pot of chili from an Eating Well recipe. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to have it for lunch today.

    :smile: SuzyQ, I have a friend who has some of those Shapeups and she really likes them. They are quite expensive, aren't they? If you don't mind saying so, how much did you end up paying for them?

    :flowerforyou: Lianne, good luck with those surgeries. Two within a month! And right at holiday time! I'll be sending good thoughts and wishes your way.

    :smile: Jeannie, I was interested to read that you feel guilty about eating your exercise calories. I eat mine every day. I hope that's okay. If I didn't, I think I would feel deprived, and that would send me off the right path.

    I hope everyone who has been under the weather is feeling better now.

    It has been three weeks for me now. I lost 5 pounds the first two weeks, but this week it was only 1 pound. Thaty's what my goal is, so I'm happy with it.

    I got mine at a Sketchers Outlet store for $89. They retail for $129 online plus shipping. (Most I've EVER paid for a paid of tennis shoes. I justified it by not having a gym membership.)

    There will be no working in the yard, no going to the dog park, no long walk outdoors. It's raining and doesn't appear to be going to stop before tomorrow.

    We are going to a huge potluck plus turkey and ham dinner tonight. There will be about 300 people so I can't count on being able to eat the food I'm bringing. This will be the first time I've eaten at a potluck since I started my weight loss journey in January. I know I won't eat anything that will be a bad choice, but I'm frequently stressed by the unknown:laugh: :laugh: :laugh: The occasion is called a Gratitude Dinner and I have so much to be grateful for that I'll just think about that and about how I get to wear my new dress and I'll be seeing some people I haven't seen in a long time.

    :flowerforyou: Lianne, you are an inspiration with the way you "walked" through your last surgery with hand weights and dignity. I'm so sorry you have to take that journey again (twice:sad: ) but i know you'll do a great job and come out the other end a newer and healthier woman

    :flowerforyou: SuzyQ----I'm going to remember those shoes when I'm ready for shoes again. right now, my two pairs of expensive New Balance shoes are still doing well.

  • Hi All, I'm new to this message board wish me luck. I received my Life Time Membership in Weight Watchers in October after six months. Started out at 172 and now I am 141. The Holidays will be a challenge for me, my first after goal. I'm making my November goal to use my WW exercise tapes at least twice a week again wish me luck. Thanks

    I am so sorry to hear about what happened with your student. I am so grateful to my kids teachers. They are great. My grandson's taking Piano and it is all I can do to afford it. I wanted to learn all my life. So I am living through him I guess.

    I went back to the y and both days did elliptical and weights. When I do weights, i eat like a nut. Mostly sugar. I have go to stop this. And today is the day. It helps so much to tell you guys this cause my family doesn't want to hear it and think I'm nuts anyways.

    As far as the shoes, I absolutely love my ASICS. But as in all my shoes, I put in an extra foot support because i need the higher arch and heel help.

    Ohmigosh, I would love to be out of the X's. I can't weight to go into a regular store and try on large, med, or small. Ha:laugh: Congrats to all and here's to a good day of taking care of our bodies. Be blessed, kc

    :flowerforyou: Karen, sometimes I get on the exercise bike an extra time just so I can have a special snack. I never eat all the exercise calories (just in case I miscalculated somewhere during the day):laugh:

    Thank you for sharing your story about the irate parent. That sort of experience was my least favorite part of teaching. You handled it with such grace and dignity.:bigsmile:

    Karen- My hubby's a teacher, so I feel your pain about your situation. If that was my kid I'd be asking why they aren't coming to class prepared and not why the teacher is expecting them to do so.

    I do feel guilty about eating my excercise calories for the same reason you mentioned. I feel fustrated that I can't seem to feel full most days without them. I will do extra stuff too like Barblie does on a day when I need a snack or my lack of planning put me over my daily allowance. I upped my calories to 1300 a day based on some conversations with coworkers to see if I can learn to live on that many a day. I should still loose .5 lbs a week or 2 lbs a month.

    Kc- Your grandson is lucky to have you to help out with piano lessons. It's so hard these days being able to afford everything you need to raise children. He's lucky your around and willing to help out with the extra stuff.

    Fancydog- Welcome! We call this time of year the "Eating Season" at work. From Halloween until Easter it just seems like one thing after another.

    Lianne, maybe this will help....I had two surgeries this past spring. After I was all healed up is when the weight began to come off. I was very worried about having to be inactive for nine weeks but it really seemed to help jump-start my weight lose.

    I went to Zumba this morning and I also bought some hand weights to take to my strength class. They do furnish some but the size that I use are usually all taken by the time I get there.

    Hi Everyone!!

    Yeah, its me--the woman who SHOULD be in Seattle right now, but I am sitting in my chair, surrounded by pesky little doggies instead.:heart:

    It seems my dad mentioned to my mother that he really didn't care if he went to his sister's anniversary or not. Then my mom started talking about how her hip hurt. It has bothered her for years, but it is the same as always. Between the two of them they managed to talk themselves right out of going!!!

    Mind you, I did a major upheaval of my schedule, so I could take today off without using any vacation time, and have been running around like a one armed paper hanger trying to find something to wear that fit. I finally discovered a dress in my closet that does fit, but I had to buy some shoes to go with it. They haven't been worn yet, but since the dress does look good, it will suffice for any upcoming parties, so I guess I will keep the shoes.

    I could have gone alone, but on such short notice it was too late to arrange to stay overnight, which would have been my preference. The friend who was going to watch the dogs foolishly offered to take them for overnight as well, but I thought she would be getting more than she bargained for!!!:laugh: :laugh: Mai Li deprived of her evening walk is NOT a happy girrrrrrrrl !!:grumble: :laugh: :laugh: Therefore NO ONE is happy...if ya know what I mean.

    I could have still done the one day round trip, about 320 miles total, but the weather is supposed to be atrocious today, just as Barbiecat, about 170 miles away from me, described in her post. All the weather radar maps show bright green from Portland to all the way to the Canadian border.

    Strangely, though when I woke up this morning, it wasn't raining, and to my amazement, about 8:30a, the SUN was out. I checked the sky, and there was actually some partial clearing and no ominous clouds in sight, so I quickly got dressed and we managed a hour of walking, as well as a brief visit to Linda, the friend who was originally going to doggie sit for me today. We came all the way home and I had time to get my mail, and take out my recycling and garbage without dodging raindrops. Good thing too, as it now appears the angels have really "turned on the faucet" out there!!!:noway:

    I don't mind driving, but I have made too many trips between here and Seattle in the rain, and between idiots who don't understand it takes longer to stop on wet pavement so they cut in front of you anyway, and the SPRAY, which is especially bothersome at night, I decided the family would just have to live without my presence.

    As you can see from the ticker, I didn't make my 45 lb. goal, but it would have been fun to surprise them all, since only my one aunt has seen me since I lost weight. If I don't see them 'til Spring, they should REALLY be surprised by then, even losing at only 5 lbs a month, I could still be down about 75 lbs. by April--a weight I haven't seen in about 20 years.

    So I now have a 3 day weekend and no definite plans. Maybe I will tackle some of the housecleaning that I never seem to have enough time to do....but that will be challenging with all the canine "help" present here!!:laugh: :laugh:

    Lianne--I HOPE your hysterectomy is being done laparoscopically. The two incisions needed are VERY small and recovery is MUCH easier than the old fashioned procedure where you have a bigger incision that takes some time to heal. Don't know what is going on to make one necessary for you, but in my case, I am SOOO glad I had it done, have felt fine ever since. I miss those misbehaving parts like a hang nail!!!:laugh: :laugh: Good luck with this and your other surgery.

    I read Becky's post and had to edit to add that I also have found weight loss easier since my hysterectomy.

    Also, Karen, I am not a teacher so I don't claim to understand all the ramifications, but it sounds like you had a valid reason for the grade given to the girl who couldn't be bothered to come to class prepared. Wouldn't your administration have supported you if you had stuck to your guns and kept the grade you originally gave? It just seems like since the grade was changed this girl has learned a lesson that won't serve her well--namely, "If 'mommy'or I make enough noise we can get our way, even when we are wrong."

    Hi everyone

    Lianne thanks for thinking about me and my knees:flowerforyou: I am trying very hard to stay active..the MRI for the one knee says torn cartilage and I am (im)patiently waiting to see the orthopedic surgeon in early December...considering this has been an ongoing, painful and frustrating problem since last March when it all started I am very anxious to get it fixed:frown: The other knee which has a lot of osteoarthritis in it has been aggravated even more because of the extra strain it has been under. The anti-inflammatories that my dr prescribed did not help any. So I am trying to remain positive and stay as active as possible so as to not find any of the weight I had previously dropped:noway: Unfortunately I cannot go on my 75 minute brisk walks that I have enjoyed doing in the past but I try to get on my bike outside when I can or the dreaded stationary bike...I also do the Biggest Loser Bootcamp workout with my 10 lb weights...I have to modify it...no squats or lunges but I get a good workout just the same...I also use my resistance bands to do some really great stretching. It certainly has been an ongoing struggle but I am not giving in without a fight. I sure know how you feel and send you big (((HUG))).

    I am late getting on here today because the day was busy with visitors, cleaning, laundry and baking. Tomorrow promises to be a good day weather wise so I am planning on getting in a bike ride and a little rest and relaxation!

    I'm always on this late. I feel a lot better since the kids went to their relatives today and I slept off and on for 2 hours. I don't understand how just doing some weights and elliptical can make me so tired.

    As I am writing this, I'm thinking .... I O'D on sugar. I ran around like a 30 year old mom and I'm 54 with diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

    you know what? come to think of it, I'm doing pretty good. I'm gonna lay off the sugar and see if in a few days, I feel good again. Please hold me accountable if you guys don't mind. I need help.

    One week down, and 1.4 pounds lost. I managed to meet my exercise goals, but it wasn't easy. I'm not accustomed to eating less and exercising more.

    1.4 pds lost is great. My WW leader once brought in a hunk of silicone that was a pound of fat. it made me realize how well I did.
    I am weighing in the morning. I pray I did something as good. I didn't eat much today but then I didn't domuch either.

    kc, I'm 63 years old and the last time I was at a weight I liked was over 20 years ago. I've eaten healthy and exercised most of my life along with eating ice cream, chips, and fast food, which may account for my reaching only 183 as my top weight, but losing any real weight has eluded me. I don't know where the strength to stay focused came from this year, but I know that I thank God every day for the good in my life. I made the decision in January to detox from sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and recreational eating. I've done this one day at a time, saying no to birthday cake, restaurants, food offered to me by friends. Thanks to MFP, I've learned a lot about healthy eating, and I've logged my food every day, usually ahead of time, and tried to add a little more exercise every day. I discovered that the longer I stay away from sugar, the less I crave it. I learned about "clean eating" and gave up low nutrition, high salt, high calorie processed food.

    My husband made the decision to change the way he eats so that made it easier. I don't have children at home, or family members nearby who insisted that I participate in frequent food oriented events.

    Today was a minimal exercise day for me that included a meeting for our business , a long visit with friends, and a gratitude dinner which was a 300 person potluck with a speaker. When we got home and I recorded what I ate (chicken, turkey, salad, and apples) I was over my calories and way under on my pedometer so I've been on the exercise bike, walking the dogs, and walking up and down the hall, getting the steps I needed and burning more calories.

    The other part of my weight loss success is a nutritional cleansing program called Isagenix that I started slowly in March and in earnest in May.

    Now I'm really up too late and when the dogs want to get up at six tomorrow, I'll be sorry,:laugh:

    so great to see so many posts. Took me a while to read through them. I will not speak to each one cause my memory is not that good. Welcome fancydog. I see you are from Alabama. I am from Louisiana so we are close neighbors. Are you a football fan. If so that was a great game yesterday. ALabama vs. LSU. Anyway welcome to this site. You will love it. Congrats on your weight loss. You can keep it off for the holidays, just stay focused and most importan keep reading and posting on MFP. We keep each other going.
    To those with loses great news. IF not just keep on going.
    We did the gym every morning this week. Yesterday we went a little later but still went. We have not gone yet today. Are going to work in the yard. Need to clean it up cause I want to decorate for Christmas this year. May go to gym later. IF not will be day off. Plan to do early morning again next week. I seem to be losing again so I guess I needed to shock my body into something different. We made it through another birthday party. That is the last one of this year. Start over again in January. I ate a salad and about 2 bites of cake. no icing. Have a good Sunday ladies.

    PS I need some of your wisdom. My godchild is getting married in April toward the end of the month. I have been kind of looking for dresses. I have actually found one that I really like and would like to go ahead and get it. However April is over 5 months away and hopefully that will be at least another 10 or 20 pounds lost. I fit into a 12 nicely so I am not sure whether to get a smaller size or just wait and see if something else comes up. I guess I could also buy it, leave tags on and ask about their return policy. Just let me know what you guys thing about it.
