Grammar pet peeves

Affect and effect always causes a problem for me. I always have to look them up to make sure I use them correctly.0

To, two, and too.
Your and you're.
their, there, and they're.
Also, when people say ''funner'' rather than, ''more fun'' ! (and other variations)
It amazes me! These people went to school just as long as I did, yet they still don't know how to correctly speak.0 -
"I could care less."
"I feel nauseous."0 -
"to correctly speak."
and split infinitives0 -
"should of" instead of "should have"
I see it ALL the time, it bugs me soo much! I don't understand how or why people think that makes sense...0 -
When people say "I still have "a ways" to go, my mind just feels uneasy.
I still have a long way to go <~~~ how about that? gosh!0 -

Just gotta say - your profile pic (at least the one that's showing right now) is hilariously apropos.0 -
Supposably. It's not a word, people.0

THIS - with a passion. I HATE IT!0 -
When people say "seen" when it should be "saw"
Someone just posted on my FB about this lol0 -
"could" + "have" DOES NOT = "could of" ...What the heck does "could of " mean?
It's "could've, would've, should've"
Not understanding why this is so hard. Do they not teach contractions in grade school English anymore?
Unfortunately people are sounding it out and that's what it sounds like. Uneducated? In England it's worse - could uv. WTF. But I cringe every time :-(0 -
people who have nothing better to do than moan GET A LIFE!!!
Where is the grammar problem there?
The first word of a sentence should be capitalized and there should be a period at the end of the sentence.
Ok, so they're not grammar errors but they're still errors. :bigsmile:0 -

Definately
THERE IS NO 'A' IN DEFINITELY!
Summat/Sumat/Summit, and the worst I've seen, Sumert , as a substitute for 'something'. It's not hard to type something...0 -
The worst one for me is "I could care less". I don't know how much more to stress it, if you COULD care less then you obviously DO care, thus you're not saying what you mean when you say "I could care less".0

Ah this has always annoyed me. I have always said "I couldn't care less" (which makes total sense, right?) and people always correct me...0 -
Bought and brought.
"I just brought a new car."
Oh really? Where did you bring it from?
I'm also noticing a lot of people saying 'pacifically' rather than 'specifically'.
The Pacific is an ocean, you utter retard.0 -
This list could run and run!
* Getting your and you're mixed up
* Getting there, their and they're mixed up
* Saying "I will try and..." when it should really be "I will try to..."
* Saying "I wish I was" instead of "I wish I were"
* People not understanding when to use "if I were" and "if I was" (if I was being rude last night, I apologise) (if I were being rude last night, believe me you'd know about it!).
* Saying "I should of..." instead of "I should have"
* Getting me, myself and I totally mixed up (our neighbours have invited my partner and me to a party) (my partner and I can't wait to attend next-door's party)
* Confusing when to use if and when to use whether
As I say, the list runs and runs. But another pet peeve of mine is the incessant overuse of the words "actually", "basically", "like", "obviously" and "y'know". So frequently every single one of those words can be dropped and the sentence would read or sound more fluent.
Oh and also the overuse of saying "the ones". It's nearly always true that a better word to use is 'those'.
Right, rant over!!0 -
Oh and to those of you who've mentioned the "could care less" against the "couldn't care less", I looked into that a while ago.
I quite agree that the saying only makes sense if you say "I couldn't care less", and this was the original saying. But, apparently, it's something of an Americanism whereby "I could care less" was deemed a 'softer' or 'less offensive' thing to say, and as it's therefore being said in more and more films via Hollywood, the (incorrect) saying is spreading.
But I wholly agree that to say "I could care less" implies that you must care to some degree if you're able to care less than you currently do now. Whereas "I couldn't care less" means that you're already at rock bottom and really couldn't give a **** ;-)0 -
Oh and as well as the affect/effect mix-ups, there's also the practice (noun) against practise (verb).
"I went to tennis practice to practise my tennis"0 -
Summink
It's SOMETHING. if you wanted summink goto Staples!0 -
I knew there was another one...
Mixing up discreet and discrete.0 -
"He was stood there"
"I was sat there"
"They are equally as great" - EQUALLY AS DOES NOT EXIST!!!
"I am going to try and go to the shop" - YOU DON'T TRY AND DO ANYTHING!! YOU TRY TO!!!
And two,to and too.
You're and your.
I done it.
I seen it.
Where, were and wear.
Massive big thing - tautology - waste of words. One does not need to use more than one describing word of the same definition!
Wow, this was therapeutic.0 -
"prolly" instead of probably
misuse of "weigh" and "weight"
writing "whose" in place of "who's" Saw this on the forum 5 minutes ago0
