chicken wings...i guess i was naive and didn't realize they were deep fried. used to eat 10 or so for dinner, till i saw one has about 100 calories (or more).0

You NEED to get the book....Eat This Not That....OMG...talk about an eye opener!!0

Olive Garden salad and breadsticks. You can do more hurt with those than you can with the meal.0
-
WINE
But much better than beer!0 -
A veggie sub from Quiznos has more calories than a Big Mac
Pretty much every cocktail
same here for both!0 -
Red Meats....
It goes to show really that even a home-cooked meal can be pretty bad for you.
High cals =/= "bad for you"
Exactly. Sounds like that meal was awesome. If you cant work in a thousand calories in a meal then work on your portion control!
One thing that personally surprised me 2 years ago when I started this - and thinking back I dont know why it was surprising, duh - was the fact that I was consuming my entire days calories or more when I went to Olive Garden (which happened too regularly!). Salad, Bread Sticks, Dipping Sauce, Meal and non-diet drinks. Well over 3000 calories.0 -
Both nuts and granola shocked me.... Jordans super nutty granola, then, was a true awakening!0
-
My school has these tiny little Crust-less pb&j sandwiches... On wheat bread, but 300 calories for something that is no bigger than the palm of my hand!!0
-
Mr Kipling Mince Pies - I love mince pies but at 256 cals I will not be indulging (well maybe 1 on Christmas Day)0
-
Those eggs that come out during Easter, rolo, milk cocolate etc.... One little egg was more calories than a regular chocolate bar!!
ETA
And A & W Mozza burger with Rings!! 1000+!!0 -
Raisins.
Thought process: "They're like elderly grapes, how many calories can they be?"
Nearly 500 calories a cup.0 -
Muffins!
Ditto...they've slowly gotten enormous and it doesn't take a whole lot of looking to find a 700 (or more!) calorie muffin.
And Pop-Tarts. Just ONE is 220 cals (and who doesn't eat both in the wrapper?)
Right, why do they do that to us. If one serving is one pop tart then wrap them individually...hmmph
MMMMMMMM.....Pop Tarts!!!0 -
Sushi! I had no idea! Over 300 per roll and I used to easily polish off 3 plus tempura and a beer then pat myself on the back for not eating fast food.0

i have a pack of poptarts at my desk i keep staring at and have resisted for this reason. :sad:0 -
Granola...
Definitely. Also, pasta. I had no idea what a single serving was and realized I was eating around 800 calories worth for dinner, not including the chicken, sauce and other stuff I threw in there too! I'll still have a bit here and there, but I make sure everything's measured out and within my range.0 -
Mayo!! 100 calories by tablespoon.0

Bananas, I can have something far more tasty for the calories.
I know I shouldn't, but I avoid fruit because of the amount of calories.0 -
Good switch over... corn tortillas are also a decent choice about 55 calories each... Try nonfat greek yogurt instead of sour cream... A cup is about the same as two tablespoons of sour cream...0

This is a great thread....everything for me once i started paying attention to calories and serving sizes. i still enjoy most things, i just try to plan for it or limit the amount. i can look back on days when i would get a grande white chocolate mocha and a blueberry muffin from starbucks, thats seriously the amount i eat in almost an entire day now. i do still treat myself though to a tall nonfat no whip wcm from time to time:)0

Chicken Wings , use to go to Buffalo Wild WIngs and destroy an order of 40 by myself during a game on Sunday. (can you say fat *kitten* )
And most liquid drinks, I stopped drinking soda years ago and switched to none carbonated drinks. Recently I looked at Pink lemonade which I use to drink like 3-5 20oz glasses with most restaurant meals (oh I was getting my 2-3 dollars worth, little did I know), Pink lemonade is 275 calories for a 20oz cup from the restaurant.
Happy Surprise, is low fat yogurt being only 100 calories or so for a full cup.0 -
I made whole wheat waffles this morning with healthy ingredients (almond milk, splenda instead of sugar) but it was still 543 calories for 1 waffle without syrup! I almost died when I added up the calories!!!0

Also...SUGAR! I've been amazed at how much sugar fruit and milk contains. It's ridiculous!!! 200ml of skimmed milk is half my daily sugar allowance.
But that's actually good sugars. You definitely shouldn't stop yourself from eating fruits.0 -
Ketchup. 20 calories per tablespoon.
I used to be a biiiiiiig ketchupaholic. I could easily consume 200+ in a condiment along with one meal.
Now I get the reduced sugar version. Only 5 calories. Tastes no different to me.0 -
<Definitely staggered by what is considered a portion. I would easily think nothing of having what I now know is 4 portions of cereal for breakfast. Even the so called healthy cereals like Special K are calorie laden.>
This is why I ended up with a food scale. As my weight has dropped so has the calories I need but it is getting to the point where I need to fight for them and you need to believe what is printed on a packet.
I have a half cup of oatmeal every morning. I know it's a half cup because I measure it properly with my trusty measuring cup. However, the package says a third cup is 30g so my half cup should be 45g. Mine weighed 52g. That's a fifteen percent error in the scales favour.
For fun I checked a Rice Krispie Square package that my girls were going to have for lunch. Package says 60 grams but it weighed in at 73 grams.
A loaf bread gives calories for two slices at 70 grams as 130 calories. However, two slices of said bread weighed 88 grams.
I've learned that I have to weigh everything now and that weight trumps volume!0 -
Oh , those bloody cookies at subway! I go into subway "to be good" then the next thing I know Ive bought 2 or 3 of those cookies, and at around 200cals each, its more calories then my measly salad sub!0

Just make sure you are getting the nutrients you need. A lot of good vitamins and minerals come from fruit. As long as you watch your portion fruit is not that bad and you do need some sugar in your diet and fruit sugars are better than processed sugar. As far as milk goes, I really need the calcium so I switched to Almond milk to avoid the cholesterol and sugar in regular milk.0 -
Madeline's cookies 1 cookie = Calories: 130, Fat: 7g, Carbs: 14g, Protein: 1g
Golden Butter Madeleines are baked into a delicate seashell shape and have a tender moist flavor. YUM!!0 -
Spaghetti the brand i had was like 2,000 calories for two cups- which i ate. I was shocked since i thought it was lower. Never ate spaghetti again since then, made me too angry lol0
