Just had the 50 Shades series given to me....Not sure if I should read it...if it's as hot as some say..it'll just lead to frustration.

  • They were..interesting :D I don't know why but I was the only one who thought that they were romance books. How come only I hadn't heard anything more about them lol.

    HATE!!

I read and I write GOOD PORN. the kind that is well-written, edited and (even in a fantasy setting) has realistic sex. 50 Shades had NONE of that.

    Vomitous trash.

If it was well written and less violent, yeah, it would have been a good book.

^Lol my husband said the same thing.
I thought they were so-so, interesting at least. First one was decent then it kinda went downhill in terms of writing.

i don't mind BDSM stories, but when the author can't be bothered to google for so much as a SAFE WORD, then NO!

if you want good BDSM porn, go read the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice, writing as A. N. Roquelaure

It really depends on what you think is hot. I thought it was wicked vanilla.

The stuff I write is way hotter than 50 Shades and I'm not afraid to use nasty words.

Just to satisfy my curiousity since you know a lot on this stuff. Isn't Sleeping Beauty basically the same concept of 50 Shades? Of course, better written, as Anne Rice is not some lame ameature writer and I'm sure doesn't do kid friendly porn stories and the "down there" or "we're going to do it" type lines.(That's where I was done with the book) Also, there's 3 Sleeping Beauty, and 3 50 Shades, and I am pretty sure Sleeping Beauty was out before. To me, I feel like 50 shades copied Anne Rice... but I'm not positive as I couldn't finish 50 shades... it was too crappy.

Was not a fan of these and it has nothing to do with the BDSM porn at all. I read the first two and with the second one I thought it was a rehash of the first only in a different setting. I was told that I need to read the third but if it's a rehash of the first two . . . I could probably live my life without knowing how it ends.

I love it!!!! I think my hubby benefits from it also! I like how in the first book she has to eat and watch her diet. :)

Sleeping Beauty is very well-written, has no purple prose, isn't afraid of the "dirty words", though i do seem to remember the word "member" used a lot for the guys. furthermore, Anne Rice has either been trained in BDSM or did a metric tonne of research. she does a beautiful job of describing training and what it is to be a true sub, she even managed to get Beauty to "sub-space" and i was dancing-happy to see that.

and yes, the Beauty series came out about 20 years ago. but Grey isn't based on, or ripping off Beauty, it's based on and ripping off Twilight. it started as Twilight fanfiction.

now, i am a fanfic writer, i have NO problems w/ fanfic and i have seen some amazing, beautiful, poiniant stuff in fanfic. ... ... .. and a LOT of crap. unfortunately, Grey was from the crap side. and was crap fanfic of a terrible series. so, there ya have it.

I liked them! First book I think was the best.
  • I was disappointed. I didn't find them any more racy than a run-of-the-mill romance novel and certainly wouldn't call them porn. The first book was interesting and not so bad, but the other two were just plain awful. (It took me forever to rouse enough interest to finish the second book). I thought the character of Christian Grey was very intriguing at first, but at the end of the series was so bored with him.

Ehhh I'm almost done reading the first book and I won't read any more. I started it out of curiousity and it's kind of interesting, but she repeats a lot and I tend to notice that.
  • Absolutely LOVED them! Plan on reading them again.

as a male that actually sat and read the books, i thought they were quite good. sure its no literary masterpiece but it was definitely enjoyable. take out the "poorly written sex" as you call it (ive not read any books like it before) and i thought the story was quite good.

people say it was amatuerish in its writing, but i take that as being on par with the characters perspective, as written by a very naive type of person.

as can be seen from the end of the 3rd book, they are being rewritten from the male protagonists perspective. i think that would be an interesting read also. whether or not she actually completes them is another matter.

but, i am also the kind of person that is easy to entertain. it is very rare that a movie/book/tv show doesnt entertain me. sex and the city is probably the best example of something i dont like.

edit: you may be wondering why i would read it in the first place. simple. i was curious. the hype was massive on both the love and the hate side of things, with many of the haters being people that just jumped on the hate bandwagon without actually picking it up and reading it for themselves. i decided to read it to make up my own mind, rather than have my mind made up for me by people that cant even be bothered looking into it themselves.

People who need a book to spark the passion in a relationship seriously need to sit and *kitten* the situation on why your sex life got so boring.
  • Reaaaaally love it! The bad thing is that my expectations about men are really different right now... Where is my Grey?
