We just had a Planet Fitness open in our town - I'll have to check it out and see if they follow these rules as well. I'm half considering joining, since our only other options in town are considerably more expensive, and the hours are not compatible with my schedule :-P.

I think the "trainer" had really no clue why they changed their policies and was talking out his *kitten*, haha. Either way- I felt picked on that week. Jeesh, I keep to myself, lift responsibly and quiet, figures. I also work at The YMCA, so I can lift there. I just liked PF machines/weights better and I could get in and out without talking to a million people. I guess it's back to The Y weightroom for deads and plyos.

That's a great combo. My college Econ professor always used Guns and Butter as supply and demand examples. LOL :(

I don't really get the point of either side of this argument. It may just be me or my type of lone wolf personality, not sure. Personally, I don't give a rats *kitten* if Arnold is standing in front of me getting his dead lift on. If he is, good for him and his wanting to build his body. Secondly, I don't give a rats *kitten* if somone who is obese/heavy/or just out of shape is running beside me on the treadmill trying to change their ways. If so, great for them. I use these places to better myself, blow off steam, and to feel better. I do not go to these places to impress people, make friends or look for companionship; on the flip side, nor do I go to belittle people, make enemies or be rude to those who want to chit chat.

As far as those places to "discriminate" against both sides and if you are one of those people who don't like it, take your tissue and leave. Simple solution. There are plenty of places you can explore to find your fit. Worst case scenario, work out at home.

Sorry, I guess I just don't get it, the companies and their "policies" or the ones complaining about the "policies".

^^^^Could not have said it better myself - Bravo

I was told a few weeks ago I couldn't do box jumps on the benches... because "it might appear intimidating to other members and could potentially crack the seat cushion" Okaaaay,.... I get it, fine- no more box jumps. A week later same "trainer" came up to me while deadlifting and told me "Per new policies you can't do deadlifts anymore" WTH?!?! Are you serious.. his reply "It is is considered an olympic event and again intimidating to other members" WOW. That's ridiculous- time for a new gym. They make a great deal about making everyone feel comfortable **EXCEPT they discriminate to the people who actually know there stuff. I guess I'm a "lunk". Whatevs- dumb policies.

Plyometrics are intimidating and deadlifting is an "Olympic" event? When did deadlifting become an Olympic event? Serial?

They are super serial but nobody wants to take them serial !!

    It could be worse.
In Germany, most gyms don't allow muscle shirts, or any sort of grunting. And karate classes that rent space in gyms are not allowed to spar, even with pads. Apparently it relates to fear of all the crap back in the "bad old days" when a specific type was idolized as the perfect specimen.

I saw a guy at the Y once that looked like an older version of the "I pick thing up and put them down" guy from the PF commercials. I almost laughed out loud because he looked kind of ridiculous.

Between using the ball on a really smooth, slick floor (which was a lot harder than using it on a matted floor) and doing crazy bosu hand walk/pushup variations to failure, i wonder if an urgent care visit is unavoidable in the future. Only thing I will say is that not only have I gotten better about doing the exercises but also a lot better about realizing when I am going to wipe out and how to either prevent it or make a more graceful exit, lol.

Planet Fitness gyms are mostly designed for people who that are new to exercise or for people that get intimidated at other gyms. It also caters to people who don't have a lot of money to spend on a gym membership.

If you are more experienced and need a hard core gym, go find another one. Simple. Just because one gym doesn't fit "the mold" of every other one, doesn't mean its bad. If anything we should be encouraging any form of exercise because there is such an obesity epidemic in the US. Really??? Does it really matter?

Just because they serve tootsie rolls, bagels and pizza once a month is not bad either. I mean, a healthy lifestyle is about balance. I choose to not eat the pizza or tootsies. That's on me, I am accountable for my actions with temptation and so is everyone else. I do have a bagel once a month...big deal.

Get off their back. They have great intentions and shouldn't be judged because they are making the gym accessible and comfortable for newcomers.

My Planet fitness and the staff that work there are a very big factor in how much weight I have lost yet far. Love them

One thing most gyms lack is a "floating" trainer to offers advice to people when they are using obviously bad form that could hurt themselves for the sole purpose of appearing that they can move more weight than they actually can.

Last night I saw two prime examples.
One guy at the barbell curl bench was raising his whole body up as he lowered the bar and using his body weight to leverage the barbell back up rather than lowering the weight on the barbell so he could remain seated and focus the lift on his biceps.
A woman doing one arm bent rows was twisting her whole upper body which doesn't come close to focusing the lift and can cause problems later on.

I am by no means perfect. I only do what other more knowledgeable than I have taught me. And at my age, the last thing I want to do is hurt myself while trying to get in shape.

Never seen this at my PF, and I absolutely love my gym compared to my old one. Guys lift weights there all the time. The lunk alarm is more of a joke there then actual practice and it's a great starter gym. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a "judgement free zone" where you primarily want to just get in shape and kickstart your lifestyle change by getting into the habit of exercising, then PF may be for you. If you are into deadlifting and are more experienced with an exercise regimen then a different gym may be for you. My fiance goes to golds because he is into body building and is more critical of his exericise routine, not so much into cardio. No one is forcing you to go to PF. Remember that :)

    I don't get it.

If you don't like PF, then don't go
If you do like PF, and it's working for you, then keep going

Bingo. For some it's the perfect gym, for others they might just need to go elsewhere. The rates/fees are pretty tempting, but if one is going there then perhaps they should be respecting the policies that have been in place. There's a gym for everyone.

Exactly, everytime my ex boyfriend and I would drive by a PF he would become raging mad that they had a lunk alarm.... I was like, they aren't forcing you to go there, you don't go there so why does it bother you. It's like, I don't smoke, but I don't go crazy when I pass by a tobacco store...

Didnt read all the replies, but last week I was told that I couldnt deadlift from the floor anymore because they dont allow any weights to be on the floor....I used a slightly lighter weight then occupied the ONLY squat rack so I could slide in and out and do my lifts without actually touching the floor....

Im buying more weights for my at home bar...

I don't know anything about Planet Fitness, but based on the attitudes of the people bashing it, it seems like a good place to go to get away from them. I don't want people judging me as unattractive and fat while I'm working on changing that!

    EXACTLY!

Why The Hell does everyone constatly think they're being judged on appearance and strength at the gym.

FYI, we don't care and are only worried about getting our workout in.

I was recently being bullied into joining NYSC for no damn reason even though I wanted to join Harbor Fitness cause they are across the street and open 24 hours. I was trying to tell the men at NYSC - look I just want somewhere I can lift in peace early in the mornings. I dont want a million cardio bunnies around me giggling and just, you know, being everywhere. I just want the barbell access and a room where I can do kettlebells and something to do pullups on.

The manager said - then why dont you just join planet fitness if all you want to do is lift?

I said they wont let me.

He just raised his eyebrows and they kept pushing. I had this living social deal for a month access to their club and i thought it would come in handy in November until could I join HF but it didnt, so they convinced me to turn it in to cover the $200 registration fee. I finally just gave in and got my membership.

I feel stupid there. I hate their effing fitness manager with a vehement passion and it's goddamned lonely as hell and now Im paying $60 a month to be miserable. YAY GYMS!

    ^^Hilarious

I once saw on the "news" that they were making a "fat" gym, where it would accomodate overweight people. So basically a gym that's always empty. What happens when you lose weight? You get kicked out for being fit.

Either that or they are afraid of people who will use this to start lifting with Zombies-- PLEASE RESPECT THE DEAD!!!

I think I saw that same "news" feature. A fitness club in Texas. New members must have at least 50# to lose. They are not kicked out when they get to their goal weight so "they can be inspirations" to new members. But how are new members supposed to know that the fit folks are former fatties? Are all "fat" people intimidated by fit people? Maybe among Generation Cupcake.

The only fitness centers I have aver joined are the YMCA. I have consistently found them to be true "no judgement" zones. All shapes ages and sizes working out in the same place.
