CARBS ARE GOOD!

So, I can drop the potatos, the rice, the pasta, and get all my carbs from VEGETABLES (which are carbs)... Right?
Yes. I'm right.
Why? Because I dropped carbs, feel fan-frikkin'-tastic, and I've lost weight. So there.
Boom Roasted!!!!!
Did I miss the part where someone said that fruits and veggies aren't carbs and that only rice, pasta and potatoes are carbs?
If you are eating fruits and veggies then you have not dropped carbs, you have merely switched to nutrient dense carbs which is probably why you feel great.0 -
I'm an avid follower of The Blood Type Diet and The Genotype Diet books from Dr. Peter D'Adamo. Since I'm an O+ blood type, I eat accordingly. It fits me to a T.
I also have systemic Candida and various food allergies/intolerances that affect my eating.
The great thing about the world we live in is, we have a choice. I'm so glad that others can not force their ideals and dogma down my throat.
I dunno my blood type0 -
here are my general guidelines for determining good and carbs:
- Most carbs that don't come pre-packaged are good for you (fruits, veggies, and i'd include starches such as potatoes, but sweet potatoes are better)
- if its made of grain, and it tastes good, its got a high glycemic index (bad carb)
That's how I see it too.
Course I do everything bad in moderation...
I don't believe in "bad foods" or "junk foods." Rather, I believe in trying to fit as much nutrition in as possible while staying within my calorie goal.0 -
Carbs rock, at least 60% of my diet is carbs!! Waffles at night? Yes!
:drinker:0 -
I see you are new here, we've had this discussion 9 million times in the past few months, so if people are snarky, that may be why. If you want to start a decent conversation, try using respectful language (ex. carb nazis) and don't provide "research" unless you give the source. A credible source.
Just a few suggestions that you didn't ask for. And welcome.0 -

If you don't even know your own blood type, you probably shouldn't be trying to dish out other nutritional info. Just saying.0 -

Was someone trying to force their ideals down your throat?? I really don't understand these "I have a disease/syndrome/ailment that makes me different, so you are wrong" posts. It's a bit like saying "I only have one leg so you are wrong when you say running is good".
OF COURSE if you have something that sets you apart from the general public a general rule may not apply. That does not make the general rule wrong. And it doesn't mean people posting general rules are attacking you personally.0 -

nope just you. cuz ur so charming0 -
Thats right i said it.
1.) Carbs are fuel, treat them as such and they will present no problem for you
2.) no carb nazis get sick from not having carbs...proof enough?
3.) i do realize there are bad carbs. if you need someone to tell you wheat bread is better than bleached white bread or to put down the cookie, then you have bigger problems.
While what you have said is certainly true for non-obese individuals who are very active, obese individuals have a particularly nasty set of metabolic problems that must be dealt with if they are going to get to a healthier state. It may be necessary for an obese individual to restrict carbohydrates to 60-100 grams a day in order to lose body fat. In addition, it may be essential to limit fructose consumption to 15 grams per day in order to effect fat loss as some obese people have a "toxic" reaction to the consumption of fructose---it makes them hoard their fat stores at the expense of lean tissue! :noway: Some obese individuals are able to convert blood glucose to fructose, so anything that boosts blood sugar (like simple carbs) is going to cause them problems.0 -

My carbs are 173 grams a day. I don't think carbs are an issue for anyone, outside of a medical condition like diabetes or something.0 -
Here's some research cat lady
Ok heres the deal. ALL COMPLEX CARBS ARE TURNED TO SIMPLE SUGARS(mono-,di-, and tri- and IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT. Complex carbs are simply polymers of simple sugars that are used mainly for energy storage (starch-glycogen) and structural scaffolds (like cellulose in plants). The saliva acid in your stomach begins the breakdown of complex carbs that greatly accelerates in the stomach, where the acid initiates the hydrolysis of complex carbs (starches) into simple carbs (sugars). This process happens quickly for some foods (white rice, mashed potato, and maltodextrin) and slowly for others (barley, black beans). This is where the GI comes in. GI measures (indirectly) the hydrolysis rate of these carbs into sugars and the insulin response. THe insulin response causes enzymatic and hormonal pathways to engage which do several things in the following "priorities", 1) fuel current energy requirements, 2) synthesis of glycogen(muscle and liver) for future use, and 3) synthesize triglycerides for energy storage (make fat). If you have no current energy needs(above that which to survive) and your glycogen stores are full, all of those carbs will be converted to fat. In the metabolic pathway, the conversion of glucose to pyruvate and finally acetyl CoA is irreversible and is dependant on the concentration of glucose (which is also where the idea that fat cannot be turned into sugar originates-due to the irrevisibility of the oxidation of pyruvate). THus the more glucose that enters your blood from any type of carb, the more stimulus there is to store it as fat. THe acetyl CoA formed is then assembled in the liver to fatty acids (Why is it not metabolized? this is because insulin shuts down the oxidation of acetyl CoA), triglycerides and then stored in the adipose tissue.
Descriptive, but the bold part is important in this discussion. If you are in a calorie deficit or maintaining the above will not occur. So it will not matter when you eat your carbs since you are not going above your energy needs.
i know i acknowledge that if you are below your cal goal, you wont get fat from carbs. and therefor it doesnt matter when you eat them...
Meaning that when you eat your carbs is irrelevant. All personal preference.
I might just be lost of what the point of the post was, and if I was I apologize ^-^
I agree, there is no real point to this post, because if you are eating over your calories anyways does it really matter what it's coming from? There are plenty of fat vegetarians!0 -

Nobody is saying eating "simple " carbs is the way to go...( soda, candy and yes, fruit )which is gonna be where you get your blood sugar problems -especially for an obese individual but like the poster above me in this qoute is saying unless you do have "medical conditions like diabetes". And yes, maybe a lil lower carb count might be ok for an obese individual, fact is, its calories vs calories out. A healthy person reduces calories, no matter what source they reduce those calories from, will lose weight. You must have "heathy carbs " including, fruits in the diet to give enough carbohydrates to burn body fat. Unfortunately, thats how the body works. The entire basis or theory behind keeping cards low is to force the body to convert to turning to its fat stores in hopes it will eat the fat, instead of carbs. Carbohydrates are the preferred source of energy for the body..makes since you would wanna get those outta your system as soon as you can so you can burn fat...only problem with that is that the second preferred fuel of the body is protein- Im shocked! Once those carbs are gone, your body will turn to protein ( lean muscle tissue ) to continue living....and that means??? MUSCLE LOSS. Your body will fight to keep all that body fat...it could care less about having muscle mass- it just wants to survive. Therefore, to keep your body from eating itself, you must have fats, proteins and CARBS. Like I said in a earlier post, 'FAT BURNS IN THE PRESENCE OF CARBOHYDRATES.0 -
also think the post about people confusing the term 'grains' with 'carbs' is very accurate.
here are my general guidelines for determining good and carbs:

- if its made of grain, and it tastes good, its got a high glycemic index (bad carb)
Aww, that makes me feel sad for you. I prefer the taste of many low GI or GL grains to the more processed stuff. I never cared much for rice until I tasted brown rice. 100% whole grain bread is much tastier and more filling than the processed white stuff. Pasta is better when it's cooked al dente, than when it's overcooked and mushy.
In general, I've found that the more processed the grain the less flavor it has. I suppose that's why they have to add so many flavor enhancers to processed foods.
look up the GI of white bread, wheat bread, and sucrose (table sugar). they are all pretty close.
I do perfer wheat bread to white bread, but its only marginally better for you then white bread. You have to go to breads made from exotic grains, like spelt, that haven't been refined through breading over 1000 of years to get a bread with a real low glycemic index. Most people generally don't perfer the taste of that over white bread. plus you have to freeze it because of no perservatives.
I bet there are good tasting, low glycemic index foods made of grain out there... but as a general rule its pretty solid. i've heard that there are good recipes for homemade bread that tastes good and has low glycemic index
lol, just looked them up and white and wheat bread both have a HIGHER GI then sugar

White wheat bread* 75±2
Whole wheat/whole meal bread 74±2
Sucrose 65±40 -
compared to the very low GI of fructose (sugar in fruit)

And even diabetics *can* eat simple carbs, so long as it's a small amount and in conjunction with either fat or fiber. (ex. piece of fruit with cheese) They just can't have too many carbs at once.0 -

I also eat white bread most of the time. Sometimes I get Sarah Lee honey wheat if it's on sale.0 -
try this one on for size:
the nutritionist told me that if i wanted to cut fat, i'd be better of eating a donut then a bagel (obviously avoiding both would be best), because the donut was more dense with carbs and the 'complex' carbohydrates in the bagel break down into sugar almost instantly.
That blows me away because when i was growing up we were taught that 'complex carbs' were good for you. Turns out 'complex carbohydrate' really just means that its more complex then a sugar. Many complex carbs like the ones in the bagel start turning into sugar as soon as they touch your saliva.0 -
not knowing my blood type will not deter me from spreading my insights to others.
your "insights" ...like can't eat carbs before bed
have been repeatedly shown to be wrong
and you owe me an apology for insulting cats.
