momma -- don't worry. My momma's a shorty (5'1" though I guess she'll claim to the day she dies she's 5'2" I know better because I'm not even 5'4" and I can see clear over her poofy haird head ) and my father is 5'9-5'10ish and my brother is 5'11".
Then again, my mom's dad was 6'4" so that could've had something to do with it (where in the world did my mom's height come from, though? because my gramma is 5'5"! Silly genetics!).
Also, yeah, some veggies do have protein! Some starches to, too. I can't think of any that have a lot, but just looking at my food diary, I see that potatoes, broccoli, carrots, asparagus, and even raspberries contain protein. It's all very little, with a small potato having 3-4g and each of the fruits and veggies containing 1-2g per serving, but at least it's something. I'm sure there have to be veggies that pack more of a protein punch I just don't know which ones they are.0 -
edamame has protein .. I've been trying to eat more of that. Just to warn you though, my 16 year old daughter posted on facebook that her 'mom made her try a new vegetable that made her cry' - when I made her try edamame. I actually really like it, with a little butter on it - it's really good - but kind of expensive.0

Yes! I just bought some edamame for the first time. I haven't had a chance to eat any yet but I'm sure it's delicious. I found it at Walmart in the frozen veggie section & I swear it wasn't that pricey. I don't think I would've bought it if it was, but maybe it was mislabeled or something. I didn't check my receipt and now I wonder. Then again "pricey" is a relative term.
Also, I was thinking that... oh dear. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but edamame wasn't it... I"ll come back and edit if I remember.
Aha... I was going to say that Arnold (or Orowheat depending on what it's marketed as where you live) makes a bread called "double protein." As I recall, it's got a good amount of protein per slice, along the lines of 7g I think. I tried it once and it was okay. I personally like their 12 whole grain bread better, though, and it has 4-5g protein per slice so it's not that much of a difference.0 -
I forgot about the bread with protien in it. Yeah, its orowheat here. I have to look for some friday when I go to the store.0
-
oh ... I've been buying edamame from the produce section, and that's probably why it seemed pricey. I just had to buy some frozen today because Trader Joe's was out of 'fresh', and it wasn't as expensive so hopefully I will like it just as well.0

I make a yummy salad with edamame.....
Shredded cabbage
Shredded carrots
shelled edamame
pickled ginger ( the red kind that is cut into thin strips and comes in a jar)
Some asian ginger/carrot dressing
Toss it all together and let sit in fridge for an hour for best flavor.
Yummmmmy0 -
yeah me .... I didn't want to work out ... but I just did 50 minutes of kick boxing ... woo hoo! AND I'm going to have an egg an piece of toast for my lunch to make up for my overly large breakfast! :happy:0
-
I love the edamame! I buy mine at Wal Mart too in the frozen foods section. It's a couple of bucks I think. Not too expensive but it's good!0
-
ok this is the first time I have heard of edamame. I had to go look it up.. soy beans.. I have heard of.
So... how do you guys fix it? I have never tried it.0 -

It usualy comes prepared. They have refrigerated ones in the produce section but frozen is cheaper. They're like lima beans, except waxier on the inside. I do love them. they're almost like eating little peanuts or something, but they're not crunchy unless you're buying soy nuts. Taste great with a dash of soy and butter.0 -
I was fitted for running shoes! Of course the pair that fit the best was the most expensive ($140) but I figure if I shell out the money this time, maybe by the time they wear out I'll be down enough in my weight that I can try a pair with less cushion! These are really cushy for old knees and tender shins The brand is Mizuno, which I've never even heard of and they are fugly - silver, lime, yellow and a little blue.
I went to a running store to get have help selecting shoes and the staff really took a lot of time with me and had me try on about six different pair. I felt like my horse when I get him shod - lots of walking and trotting back and forth first bare foot, then with shoes while the guys knelt down to look at how my feet were striking the floor and rolling forward:laugh: They didn't try to up-sell me, and said that if I was going to do most of my running on a treadmill or indoor track the cheaper ($100) shoes would even be better.
I also ordered an inexpensive mp3 player today so I don't have to mess with my very old iPod and iTunes set-up. I'm hoping I'll be able to use it for the C25K program (which the running store guys love, by the way).
I bought three pairs of hiking socks that were 50% off, and one pair of socks for running - and left the store after spending about $170. I forget that real stores with bricks and mortar charge sales tax!!!
DH wants to go out for Mexican tonight... YIKES!!!:noway:0 -

Hope everyone had a better night then me!:yawn:0 -
BlueNote- WHOOT!!! My new fancy scale has me at 62 (I'm 42) I'm guessing that all your GREAT choices and new active lifestyle are totally killing that test! YOU ROCK!!!
lilDebbie - Subway might be high in sodium but you could do worse - way to go with good choices! It's SOOOOOO NICE to see you back on this list - we've missed you BIG TIME! And I'm so impressed that you're even trying to run! I have the shoes now but not the guts (maybe Saturday?)

Checking in for today
3/10
calories: 1258
Sodium: 2023
Water: 96 oz
Exercise: Level 2 of 30 Day Shred with 5 pound weights. I really wanted to do day 2 of c25k but my pup is sick. We gotta go to the vet in the morning0 -
Hey you groovey gals!
Been gone all day today, had a revenous appetite, bombed this weeks cardio challenge, and ready to fall into bed. That is my week in a nut shell.
momma: it is so good to see you!!!
lildebbie: how are the munckins?
mstahl: you really need to post a pic of these shoes.
bluenote: high five! You are making great progress girl.
jess: hope that you and your dog has a better night.
Good night all.0 -
Jess - good luck with the pup! We're watching my bff's old mini schnauzer who when dropped off last night, trotted into our living room and did both on the carpet. She's a good old dog and really well house trained but we've had too many dogs on our carpet, so while OUR dogs get they can't go no matter what micro orders might linger... yeah. This morning there were a few more surprises. When we put her outside she holds one wet paw up and looks at us horrified like "WHAT? you want me to do my business out HERE? Its damp and there's still SNOW on the ground!" My friend said "I trust you to do what ever makes sense and don't tell me till we get home" which means if poor ol' Maggie gets sick I'm to be the Dr. Kevorkian However Maggie looks about as spunky as ever!
Meanwhile Mrs. Fig was glowering from her crate last night. They've shared space in natural areas like my parent's farm or the lake cottage but Mrs. Fig is a little people possessive so we'll wait until tonight to have them both lose in the house. After spending time outside together they should be fine. Maggie will rule the roost and Mrs. Fig will keep her nose to herself
I felt like crap (and then did:laugh: ) this morning but I made myself get on the elliptical machine. I only put in 12 minutes but at least I got on the damn thing! I'll walk at lunch today to fit in another 45 minutes of exercise. I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to be "talked to" about eating lunch AND walking at lunch. I have a plan for that, I'm going to split my lunch in two and snack at 10:30 and 2:30. I'm salary and none of this should really matter - we usually put in between 45 -50 hours a week anyway but thus the joyous time in our department!
The internal post I want finally posted on our intranet so I applied for it Tuesday! I heard a rumor I was getting it but I'm not sure where it started - I hope it's a good sign!
I just finished my yummy cottage cheese with (frozen) blue berries for breakfast! Lots of protein to start the day without much fuss!
I hope everyone has a great day today!!!0 -

03.10.10
Calories: 1281
Exercise: 25 minutes stationary bike; 30 minute walk
Water: 88oz or more
Proud: Worked 13 hours and it was raining outside, so I walked inside on my lunch break (I work on a large ex-corporate campus so there's a lot of room to walk inside).
So, I was at Walmart the other day and there were thin long sleeved shirts on sale for $3 so of course, I picked up 2 of them (in a ladies' size LARGE, no less! No more X's for me). I decided to wear one of them to work today along with the 1 pair of pants that still fits reasonably well. The shirt is fitted but not stretched tight and it looks gooooooood on me. Anyway, I put a little purple lacey spaghetti strap shirt under it because it's a V neck and although I've never had any cleavage to show, I wouldn't be very comfortable showing it anyway. I put on a necklace (I haven't worn a necklace in years. seriously) my best friend gave me for my last birthday I think (I remember opening it & loving it but thinking I'd never ever wear it). Then I put on my polka dotted ballet flats and realized I had just created what I think is called an "outfit!" I don't wear "outfits!"
Then, I stepped outside to go to my car and checked my reflection again the window from the porch (I don't have a full length mirror... ). Then I walked down the steps and was walking to my car... when a man driving by HONKED at me!   Now normally I'd say that being freaking honked at is crude and annoying and even offensive. But this morning it made me happy. Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure anyone's ever actually honked at me before! Don't get me wrong, I've gotten some "Hey girl!"s out of car windows and such (also annoying and offensive, lol).. but being honked at is like.. on another level altogether.0 -
Jess, I hope your dog is feeling better. Did you know you can give dogs Pepto? I bet you can call the vet for the dose recommendation (or check several vet sites online via Google). I never have but I've never really had the need, either (I rawfeed so I can usually take care of puking/pooping issues with fasting & extra bone in the diet). I've helped several friends administer it to their dogs (I guess they're not as keen on cleaning up poop and puke as me.. Oh, the joys of playing mom to 6 dogs) and it works well.
Hopefully she just has a virus or got into a little bacteria (like from drinking standing water outside) like campylobacter or giardia. We had a bug go around my house a few months ago -- 3 of my dogs got it and 3 didnt. It was FUN. Tummy troubles are only a major concern if, of course, there's dark blood in the vomit, or black stools, or if the dog refuses water for several hours (which, when paired with puking usually indicates a block in the digestive tract which is a very serious situation & needs immediate vet attention). It's okay to fast a dog with tummy troubles and I actually recommend it for at least 12 hours after the last episode -- just offer plenty of water. And all of this comes with the disclaimer that I'm not a vet -- just someone with a LOT of dog experience.0 -
feeling kind of blah since yesterday...checking in for 3/10/10:
calories- under by a lot (300 to be exact)
water- yes I believe so
sodium- 1835
excercise- 15 mins bike, 15 mins walk on treadmill
proud- not really
I didnt plan my food out for the day like I normally would and it turned into a mess. I was hoping to get to go to the grocery store on my lunch break but that never happened, I was too busy. Well, I ended up eating a snack pack for bfast and a bagel w/ cream cheese for lunch. I wasnt really starving but I lacked energy. By the time I got home I was very sluggish and didnt want to work out at all. I made my self go to the gym even though I didnt want to. There were no treadmill available so I got on the bike and by the time I did 15 mins on there I was pooped. A treadmill finally opened up and I attempted to do my c25k but I couldnt do it. I opted to at least walk at 3.0 for 15 mins so the day wasnt a complete loss. But then I got really down (and still am) on my self for quitting and not doing my work out as planned. I blame lack of palnning and not having enough protein through out the day, which I always get plent of of and NEED! If I had made it to the store at lunch things might have been different but oh well, such is life.
Well I prob wont be around much today, still feeling down and gonna go visit my sister in law and niece, and trying to stay away from BF who has been in a horrible mood due to work. So I think I will get my pedicure that I earned for hitting the 25lbs mark (yea im alittle behind in treating myself, lol)
Hope u all have a great day,
Cris0 -
Jlb: Congrats on your "outfit" and getting honked at! You're obviously a hottie now!
Checking in for yesterday:
Calories: Over by 582
Sodium: Over by 1379
Water: 64 oz.
Exercise: 30 minutes on the elliptical
Proud: That I worked out even though I was still sore from the day before.
It's pouring rain and thundering here today, so I think it's safe to say that spring has arrived!
I'm thinking I'll probably take tonight off of exercising because of the soreness in my glutes and calves. Does anyone know a good glute stretch? I tried everything I could think of and nothing helped.
My original plan was to go see my horse tonight, but I know what the pasture will look like (knee deep mud) and am thinking I'll wait until tomorrow. Being sore AND getting stuck in the mud doesn't sound like much of a picnic to me!0 -
Thank you all for the get well wishes for my puppy! I did take her to the vet this morning and she has a bacteria infection so they gave her a shot and some anti biotics. They said I did the right thing giving her boiled rice and chicken last night. She's had pancreaticis (If tha'ts how you spell it!) before. She's at home locked in my bathroom, no worries it's a BIG bathroom. Going to go check on her on my lunch break.
JLB: Congrats on the creating of the outfit and loooking hot and getting honked that! That always makes you feel sooo goood!! And all the tips on how to handle sick pups is great! I don't feel so bad for not being able to feed her before I left for work now. I treat this dog like she was my child I swear!
Cris: Don't beat yourself up too much about not doing your c25k. Everyone has those days.Just pick up where you left off tomorrow, or today. Enjoy your pedicure!! You deserve it!0 -
Here's a link to my fugly shoes -> http://www.rei.com/product/795596
When our dogs get sick we put them on a fast - 8-12 hours of no food or water, then we introduce a little water at a time (like 1/2 a cup for little dogs) and if that goes well we'll give them a little rice after 24 hrs. If the rice goes well we go to a little ground venison and rice and continue ,mixing in kibble until they're ok. Any throw up we start back at the fast again. Usually it's just the pancreatitis from getting too much fatty foods (pig ears!).
Our mastiffs have all been capable of eating anything but our setter can LOOK at something and get sick!
I'm missing my walk date to go to an Indian restaurant - I'm SO BAD!0 -
Hey girls just checking in to tell you gals I am still here.I am trying not to focus so hard on calories and what I am eating because I really believe that it is a set back for me.I have noticed that if I don't think about it I lose weight.I believe I am stressing so I am trying to relax and just be cautious about what I put in my mouth and how much of it I put in my mouth. So in other words I am winging it with calories right now.And to my surprise 2 pounds back off of me this morning. Not a real loss because I was less last week but its that same darn 4 pounds I gain and then lose over and over again.I will get it right though and it will start moving again.0
-
mstahl, those aren't ugly!! They just look like running shoes to me. Actually, the more I look at them, the more jealous I get. I love them!
I love all the coined and made up terms for "shoe technology." It all makes me giggle.
These are the cheapos I got last week (I don't have the funds to go to my local running store to be fitted yet -- some day!). The purple ones.
http://www.zappos.com/asics-gel-fluent-2-white-silver-plum
Paid $65 for them with a sale plus a coupon (Please recall I have previously mentioned I'm cheap). The sales tax caught me off guard too. I was like "$69.something? What!?!?).
I LOVE THEM. They're actually cross trainers, not running shoes but I ran 2.5 miles in them Monday and had no blisters or pain at all -- ZERO break in time. That's like never happened in the history of me+shoes.
I had Asics Enduro 5s before which were incredibly comfortable (after I broke them in.. ouch) and super squishy but the tread was wearing down and I felt like they were *too* squishy for working on speed. They were for trailrunning.
Yay, we're nerds.0 -
checking in for yesterday:
calories: over by 197 ... but considering I started the day with an 800 calorie breakfast - I think that was pretty good
exercise: good - very happy with myself for doing kick boxing DVD at home
water: good 72oz... but didn't start drinking water until 3:00pm when I exercised, I need to drink water all day
proud: that I did a pretty good job on calories even though I started the day out pourly and was really tempted to call the day a loss and keep eating all day... especially when I was home sick feeling sorry for myself
Have a great day everyone!0 -
hey girls! I know I said I was going to do better at checking in but things have been so stressful and crazy. I have done really well on not going over my calories however I have completely bombed drinking enough water... I peaked at the scale this morning and I was up almost 2 lbs... I guess I wont be having a lose this week. Im still going to weigh in and then take my measurments for the month. I hope everyone is having a good day!0
-
Tiger! I've missed you! Glad things are going well - and I wouldn't worry about those 2 lbs You're doing great to stay within your calories. I'm so impressed!
Awestfall - good job on switching things up to find a process that isn't as stressful to you! We have to make this livable and stressful diet stuff won't help.
jlb123 - I can't seem to do squats - my knees KILL me before I get close to knee level! I guess I'll have to rest on my crunch ability laurals and keep working on my push-ups AND RUNNING!
Awestfall - what if you find some sort of exercise that's a fun challenge for you and stop thinking about making your summer goal? What if you re-write your birthday goal to a sport goal - like to be able to run 3 miles or to be able to do 100 squats... or all of the above? Just focus on your activity and eating well and KNOW that the weight will come off one way or another...
Maybe I should think about taking my own advice?0
