Ok here it is!!! I didn't binge this weekend.I took Saturday off of exercise and I exercised for 30 minutes on Sunday and then cleaned house. Is it possible for a digital scale to be broke. I weighed myself yesterday and it said 222 and then the second time I weighed it said 224. then the 3rd time it said 231 and today still doing the same thing so what do you gals think is it broke.Should I get an analog scale instead of digital. On a good note my husband has lost 33 pounds in a little over 2 months and does not exercise he just watches what he eats.I have to work my butt off to lose one pound. So unfair!!!!!   Anyways I'm not letting what the scale says bother me because I got a complement the other day at church.A lady I hadn't seen for awhile said that I looked like I was losing because my face was indeed getting smaller and although my family has told me that I do look smaller to them it was nice to hear it from someone who doesn't see me all the time. I wanted to ask you gals too if you guys think that maybe the reason the scale is saying the same thing all the time is because I could be gaining some muscle.I am thinking that it is muscle because I have alot more definition than I had before when it was just fat.And muscle does weigh more than fat right? What do you gals think?

awestafall-I know the scale I use here pretty much does the same thing. I try and get on the scale and stay as still as possible. I know the tiniest shift in movement or if I am looking down or to the left or right it will adjust by a pound or two. Congrats on not going out of control this weekend. Wish I could say the same! I went out to the bar with my sister and a friend Saturday night and got a little out of control. Pretty disapointed in myself! :explode:

    Good morning ladies...

I hope everyones weekend went well. I worked Sat and Sunday.. well... did some more spring cleaning and snacked entirely too much and did not log my calories on Sunday. I attempted to make yogurt this weekend and it was a bust. But, I will try again and pay a little more attention to what I am doing. Maybe next time it will go better.

Today I am starting the day off right. got my exercise in the this morning.. enjoying some oatmeal and I am going to till the garden today! It is going to be in the low 70's today.. whooot.. I am so excited. I love this time of year!

Well.. I gotta get going. I will check back in later..

Thanks for the new thread, awestfall.

I think you could be gaining a little muscle. Unless you're a big exception, though, it's unlikely you're gaining pounds and pounds of brand new muscle BUT you could be reactivating some atrophied old muscle (I'm giving you a ridiculously simplified explanation because that's how I understand it). You said you used to be pretty athletic so you could have a good deal of old muscle to reactivate.

As suspected, the scale did NOT read 208 or less for me this morning. But, it actually wasn't as bad as I thought. I still weighed less than last Friday so that's really promising. Between 6pm and 11pm last night, I ate that entire burger. And all of the fries... and a lot of the pickles. So many fried pickles. It's a real wonder I'm not a bloated puffy pig this morning! I'm sure my sodium intake was at like 5000mg yesterday. At least! And even with all that food, I think I was still in weight loss calories yesterday because of the hours of yardwork I did before we went. I'm thinking I was around 2200 calories for the day which is actually MAINTENANCE calories for me BEFORE exercise! So I was probably still at a good 500-600 calorie deficit for the day! Days like yesterday make me wonder how in the world I ever got so fat. How could I eat so much more than that and move so much less than that to gain so much weight? Crazy.

Last night, I made paneer with the milk from my first yogurt attempt. I think it'll be alright, but it's a little off tasting because of the yogurt. It'll still be yummy in some yellow curry, though!

And, last night, I also attempted making yogurt for the 2nd time. SUCCESS!! It was yogurt when I got up this morning and I left it to strain through a cheese cloth in my fridge while I'm at work. I'm excited! So, my understanding is, the longer you let the yogurt cultures do their thing, the tarter the yogurt tastes?

Littlejlb- the longer you let the yogurt do its thing the tarter because it's eating the sugars. BUT when you filter out the whey it isn't very noticeable!

Awestfal - when you increase your exercise your muscles hold water as they heal and build more tissue. The additional tissue is heavier than any surrounding fat so you can have the same measurement of a given body part but as the ratio changes you're tissue is denser and heavier per cubic inch. There is controversy because some say "fat turns to muscle" which isn't true, but muscle builds and gets larger and your body fuels this "build out" through stored energy (fat) or through digested foods which aren't going into storage... either way it's good for us! When you are in a steady state of exercise your body isn't building more muscle, just repairing what it has. At this stage you're tend to see inches come off and the scale go down. Both stages are good for you.

When I started to exercise there's a big long flat line in my weight loss - after about two weeks my body adjusted to what I was demanding and the weight started coming off. As I've added jogging and biking I'm seeing the same thing - a pause while my body builds up the appropriate systems to handle the new work load, then a nice drop.

speaking of drops - I went off my water pill Saturday and I'm up about six pounds - that combined with my lovely eating over the weekend makes things look pretty horrible!

I did Week 3 Day 3 of the 5K101 today so Wednesday I'll get to move up to the 4th week and the 4 minute jogs - the third day of week four I have six minute jogs and then week 5 with the 8 minute jogs OH MY!

I'm jogging super slow - just fast enough to keep the dang speed walkers from passing me! When I get the 'one minute to go' warning I try to kick it up a notch and lengthen my stride.

For those of you with iPhones or iTouch the 5K101 program has an iTunes app that lets you overlay the coaching on any play list you want. kinda cool... except I don't have the iPhone or iTouch... I like the program though because I get coaching on my stride and breathing and stuff.

Today I've had an apple and a protein smoothie. I KNOW THOSE SMOOTHIES ARE REALLY JUNK FOOD but I am SO hungry after I work out I fall for them every time! The protein one has 320 calories and I use it as "breakfast" so I'm hoping that's not too bad! Today I didn't even burn 320 calories - so depressing! I'm going to try to keep lunch and dinner super light and see if I can't make up some calories today and tomorrow.

So life is weird sometimes... I have an offer for a great management job at a big company that would involve all sorts of fun international travel - but it's a company that makes toxic stuff. I'm waiting to hear from the Hospital system where I work now, on a good job (not management) that would still let me learn and grow - but no travel and not as much money... but WE SAVE BABIES!!!

I don't want to work for a toxic company. I would like the money and lifestyle but uhm... I don't want to work for the bad guys.

Not sure what that says about me - maybe I'm just not cut out to be the bread winner?

    Good morning!

Awestfall: Your daughter sounds adorable! It looks like you have a personal training for free!

Cris: I like the new pic and I love your fiance's comment about you shrinking. I hope the sinus infection clears up soon because I know how miserable those are!

Jesyka: Congrats on the 8 lbs. lost last week and thanks for the new challenge. I'll try to get it accomplished later in the week when I'm at home. Don't feel bad about not being able to do pushups because I sure can't do them, but I can do all other aspects of 30 Day Shred. I think it's dumb that I can't do pushups but I can fling 50-75 lb. hay bales...so weird.

mstahl: I love your rule about weight gain being water and weight loss being fat. I'm going to have to stick to that.

lildebbie: I'm bummed that you had to give the adorable puppy back, but at least he'll go to a good home. Good luck on your search for long haired dogs you're not allergic to. I would be so sad if I were allergic to my cats, dog or horse!

Jess: I love that your mom gave you protein bars instead of candy. My mom still does an Easter gift for my sister and I. She usually does a small gift instead of candy, so that's good.

Littlespy: That burger joint sounds amazing! I love sweet potato fries and actually made some last night (baked ones). If your body needs the extra food, you must obey it's demand, right?

So this weekend, I THOUGHT I was eating well, but after logging everything I found out I went over by about 400 calories each day and was horrible on the sodium. So, my 190 was short lived as the scale says 194 this morning. BUT, the gain is water retention and it will be gone by the end of the week. No worries.

On Friday, I was late for the class I was going to sit in on, but found out when I got there that I didn't need to take it afterall, so I went shopping. I didn't end up buying anything but I can fit into the size 10s now. I didn't buy them simply because the store was out of size 10 longs. Who would have thought I'd be a size 10 at 190 lbs. and 5'6"? Weird. I wear size large shirts (mostly to accommodate the ta-tas). I'm a large in exercise pants, but that may soon be a medium since the larges are starting to slip down too far when I jump around. Losing weight is expensive!

Oh, so I thought I'd share the recipe for the awesome baked fries I've been making. Either potatoes or sweet potatoes can be used.

Use 4 Yukon Gold potatoes or 2 large sweet potatoes, sliced or wedged
    1 egg white
3/4 tsp. garlic powder (can use same amount of garlic salt, but this adds sodium)
    1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Combine the egg white, garlic and cheese in a large bowl, add potatoes and toss. Spread coated potatoes on a greased baking sheet. Bake 25-40 minutes (use 30-40 minutes for crispier fries). Enjoy!

They're SO good and my boyfriend's son really liked the sweet potato ones last night. They're an easy side to just about any meat.

Thanks for the insite on the muscle issue.
Little Spy- I don't believe I am gaining tons and tons of muscle but here for the past few weeks now my weight has actually stayed right around the same area with some fluctuations up and down the scale .So I was just wonder if some of this could be muscle. For example-this past Friday I was 229 and today 231 again ( i think ) when my scale wasn't actually going nutso and telling me 219,220,224,228,then 230 again. Not saying that the gain bothers me because it doesn't but just wondering if it could be muscle.Because I know the week before that I was 234 (I think) and then popped back up to 236(because of ovulation) but then bounced right back down to 231 3 days later. So you see what I am getting at.I feel smaller and I look smaller to me and obviously to others and it would be nice to see the scale move down but I'm not worried about it was just curious if thats why or not??? The muscle issue!! And yes I was very active 10 years ago I was running everyday 8 miles or more.So I know I have lots of leg muscles that are probably being reactivated as you say.

Mstahl- My weight is just been going crazy lately.I guess my stomach is shrinking because I find myself not wanting as much to eat now.So I listen and I don't eat.I measure everything out I do eat and I eat lots of foods with fiber and protein to help keep me full and on occasion I have some junk (well to me its junk) to my family not so much lol.I eat lots of organic foods now and less and less processed. In fact we have done away with processed food altogether. So happy for that. But I was just curios of whether or not I was gaining muscle or not

Hajohnson-Thanks for the comment and the recipe!! I can't wait to be 194.Keep up the good work

Heather -- thanks for that recipe! The fries sound awesome! I usually just coat mine in a little olive oil/peper/garlic powder. Never thought about using egg whites & parmesan. YUM! I may have to make them tonight.. I do have a couple of sweet potatoes laying around.

So, in an effort to continue switching things up on my body, I decided to run this morning. And apparently I pulled my groin & my left hamstring a little playing tennis Saturday because running certainly aggravated both. :ohwell: I had to stop after just 12 minutes because I could feel them getting worse and I have already learned my lesson once the hard way. I'll take it easy today & tomorrow & just ride my bike (I think I may go for a bike ride outdoors this evening.... maybe -- people drive so crazy through my neighborhood it makes me a little nervous).
Anyway, I had decided I'm going to start running in the mornings. It's not my best performance time because I always seem to do better in the evenings but lately my evenings have been so busy I'm missing my runs. So, I'm going to run M, W, F and either Saturday or Sunday which gives me 4 run days a week instead of my usual 3.

Scales - when I bought our new fancy smancy scale (I say this because we got a ridiculously featured one!) I read a lot of reviews. There are some digital scales that are known for being very buggy and giving a wide range of weights. The one I remember being very problematic was the 'Weight Watchers" digital scale. Ours is an Omron, which had good reviews. I get the same weight every time I step onto it. It has a on/off switch you bump with your toe, then it calibrates for about 2 or 3 seconds, then you step onto it. Here at work we have a Taylor and it doesn't vary very much (that was a weird sentence- even for me!). If someone steps onto the Taylor it might lock in .4 pounds more or less but that's the most variation you'll see.

We paid (I think) $89 for this
    http://www.amazon.com/Omron-Full-Sensor-Composition-Monitor/dp/B0020MMCDE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1269882369&sr=1-2

But we don't use the extra features all that much. I don't think my husband or housemate have EVER set up the info for the body fat part, and I only do that reading about once a week.

Edited to add - I'm still a little mad at my Omron because it said my body age is 64. That's just MEAN. I think 52 would have been cruel enough to get me moving but seriously 64? That's 22 years older! YIKES!

So I had a revelation today...

I've been thinking I was under or just barely making my 8 glasses of water each day..OH BOY was I ever WRONG! I've been using and refilling a 3L jug..for those of you who know your conversions well you'll know what I'm getting at.

So I thought to myself today how can this jug of water only be a few glasses? so I decided to use google to convert the Liters to ounces. Yeah 3 liters is about 101oz...12 glasses of water. I've been drinking at least one, sometimes 2 of these jugs a day all week! Is it possible to drink too much water? lol

Awestfall- I'm with the other ladies on it being muscle tone adding the extra lbs...you work far too hard for it to be anything else!

Littlespy- Glad your yogurt turned out well, and once you flush out that sodium you'll be back to kicking butt and taking names :)

Mstahl- Here's to a better work out day tomorrow :) Hope you hear back from the hospital about the job you're inquiring to, saving babies is better than traveling anyday :D

    hey girls!

Heather: thanks for the recipe! the fries sound yumm..and i happen to have sweet potatoes or are they called yams..
i usually cook mine in the microwave first for 2 minutes, it cuts the cooking time then i add some garlic and onion powder, paprika, sea salt, black pepper, and a little olive oil...lay them flat in the pan and cook @ 470 degress..that the highest temp for my toster/conventional oven.. I will def. tries your..

so the weekend i thought i did good..but when i uploaded my food diary for sat and sun...i was up on fat on both days...but the problems is i didn't eat terrible...just good old homemade food..which i cooked. no wonder there was a one pound gain on the scale this morning..ugh! no worries i did my workout today...boy that cardio thing on about.com was too much for me...it was somewhat like biggest loser cardio max..level one/two together...not bad. i will try it again another day...plus i worked out 50 minutes on the elliptical.

awestfall: my scale is annoying too...don't let it get you down..it's how you feel that counts not the number on the scale..stay positive girl:flowerforyou:

mstahi: way to go on your running...keep it up girl:drinker:

Well, the short of it is that it is possible to drink to much water, but 6 liters over the course of many hours should be fine. Healthy human kidneys can safely process 15L of fluid a day (so this also includes the fluid in the food you eat).

Now, f you chugged the entire 3L jug in just a couple minutes, you may have a problem.

So, it's not really how much water you're drinking, it's how much how fast.

They're sweet potatoes! "Yams" are actually a misnomer, although sweet potatoes are often referred to as yams. I was watching an informational/documentary type show on tv that said they are known as yams because, wow I'm not sure how to say this in a politically correct way... because they look a lot like the "yams" people saw in Africa before they came to America (as slaves). All "yams"grown in the US are really all sweet potatoes.

Yay, this link backs up what I heard on TV:
    http://zoebakes.com/?p=1289

edit: Now I'm a little embarrassed you all know I watch nerdy documentaries about stupid things like yams vs. sweet potatoes.

thanks litspy, you are awesome! why should you been embarrassed about watching educational documentaries...i do it too...the reason why i called them sweet potatoes or yams is because i went to a famers market and what i though were sweet potatoes were called yams..so some call them SP and others call the same thing yams...who cares that are delish...

glad you had better success with the yogurt this time around:drinker:  once you get the hang of it you can't stop:laugh: ENJOY:wink:

Littlespy: Thanks for the information on yams vs. sweet potatoes. I've always wondered what the difference was and now I'm glad I know!

My boyfriend and I always watch educational shows on Discovery and History, so we've learned crazy stuff as well. I love trivia and figure all of the knowledge will come in handy someday when I'm on a game show. The only bummer side is that the good educational shows are usually on late at night because apparently the general population cannot handle them!

OMG! LilDebbie! I'm soooo sorry to hear about what happened to your bathroom scale! What are the chances that you daughter spilled sticky stuff on it and it stuck to your bare foot and when you stumbled to catch your balance you SMASHED IT and then started to fall again and WHAM! and then that last step that really did it in! poor scale. it's dead!

You should really watch out because next time YOU could get hurt! Thank heavens it was just an old scale!:smokin:

lol Mstahl.. love that one! smiley-laughing001.gif Lildeb.. I have a digital scale "health1" I bought from walmart around 30 or 40 bucks about 4 years ago and it does not give me different readings when I step on it. Good luck with trying to get a new one.. I think you mstahls little story is great!!!

I decided to take a lunch break. That tilling the garden turned into tilling up the old sod around the new bbq cover, moving flag stone.. filling flag stone holes in (it was in our grass as a pathway) and I am just getting started. Any idea how to calculate calories burned on yard work? I am definitely working up a sweat and out of breath! But, the end result will be soooo worth it!

We are making grilled pork tonight and those sweet potato fries sound wonderful.. I think my family is going to love those tonight.. Thanks for sharing the recipe Heather!

Well.. my chicken breast is almost done.. time to eat some lunch and get back to work!

Okay, you all have really confused me about the sweet potatoe vs yam thing. We actually have a sweet potatoe section and a yam section at our grocery store and they do look different in color. I do not know the difference or how to tell, I am just saying there are 2 types of things sitting there and one says yam the other sweet potatoe. I will try this recipe it sounds good!!! Thanks Heather.

jlb, we watch documentary's all the time. My husband has a very large flat screen high def tv. and we were all excited and looking forward to the new doc. "Life" on the discovery channel cause it was in high def. LOoked like it was all in my living room. History channel, discovery, all of those types come on in our house all the time.

Okay took my son for a walk this morning and there is a canal for irrigation by my house. We walk down it cause there are ducks and horses down the way. I decided to take some carrots for my son to feed the horses. Only 1 of the 3 horses was near the fence. When she came to the fence she looked too thin. Her ribs are popping out and I could see her hip bones. I am not a horse person nor do I know much about them but it is quite obvious to me she should not be that thin. She practically ate my son in the process of getting carrots from him. I am thinking I need to call animal control. Her hooves looked all cracked and messed up to. I am thinking these people should not have these horses. I know we are all having a hard time with the economy and such, but it is time to give up your animals if you can't afford to feed them. What really made me mad is I could see some hay in the shelter but it was just on the other side of a fence and just out of the horses reach.

See i knew my scale was flakey  I have one of the WW ones..I have had it for probably 7-8 years. I tell hubby we need a new one and he says no..grrr...I think we do though :)
I have a WW scale too !! I am so investing in a new one payday!!! Thanks gals

Wow, I have a Weight Watchers scale which was excellent until the past week or so. I've had it for four years, so it must be time to buy a new one. My boyfriend has one of a different brand that I really like, so I'll probably replace mine with one like his.

I'm glad to hear so many people want to try the fries. I love them and so did the rest of my family, so it's not just in my head.

Momma: Regarding the horses, you should look (google) to see if there is a hooved animal humane society in your area, as they would be responsible for the welfare of farm animals. Most animal control agencies and human societies only focus on smaller pets (cats, dogs, birds, etc). If you can't find any info, let me know where you live and I can see if I have any contacts I can forward to you. How do the others horses look compared to the one your son fed? The one thing to consider is that she may be an old horse who doesn't hold weight well; sadly, when a horse is no longer rideable, a lot of people stop caring for their hooves. Good luck and thank you for caring about the horses!

I weigh myself daily to keep better track of my habits, but the fluctuations don't drive me nuts like they do to some people. If I see a gain, then I can look back at my log and see what I did that I need to change to reverse the gain. If I see a loss, I look at what I did to get there. I think for me, the weight would creep back way too fast if I didn't monitor daily. My boyfriend does the same thing.

However, if you're someone who would obsess over the fluctuations, I would say to only weigh yourself weekly, as most "experts" suggest.

Either way, though, the numbers are just for you!

I called animal control and they said oh the Morrill horses (which is the name of the street that the horses live on) Yes we know them and there is a case against them. Their horses just aren't skinny enough yet and every time we go out there they have food. She said we go weekly waiting to make sure they don't get too thin. :noway: Not skinny enough wow how skinny do they have to be. Anyways, they said people call them all the time about all 3. The other 2 are very thin as well. I can't tell how old the horses are I know they have been there a few years. When my girls get home we are taking them some carrots and apples. I do not know what else to take them.

    Jess-

I weigh myself every day and log it in a spread sheet. I track my five day average on a chart, and my five day average calories too! If I were really obsessive I would track when I have a bowl movement because that is often the unexplained up tick or drop in weight!!! And water of course... between the two of them I can never get too wigged out about a "gain". Unless I go over my maintenance for several days I assume ANY up-tick is water or uhm... "pooh". On the other hand you don't suddenly lose more than water or "what not" so any low I see as an indication of weight loss! (it's my double standard and I can use it if I want too!) Over all my five day average runs even a week or two then DROPS several pounds then runs even a week or two and DROPS again. Only a few times has the five day average gone up and those times seem to correlate with high sodium.

The only time my weight dropped steady was when I wasn't exercising, just dieting.

    Good luck

those poor poor horses.. I love horses although I am allergic and have to enjoy them from a distance. Here where we live in Northern Colorado there are horses everywhere! Unfortunately, due to the economy many people have had to sell or give away their horses.

My arms, chest and legs are J.E.L.L.O. holy cow I forget every year how much that tiller takes (shakes) out of me. I still have a lot of work to finish but, I am going to have to do it in shifts as I need to be able to give several massages tomorrow and don't want to over do it.

As far as weighing.. I do best when I weigh myself 1st thing in the morning every day. Like Heather, it helps me keep check on myself. It seems like when I skip days I tend to slowly put the weight back on.

Momma2four: At least the animal control people know about them. Unfortunately because of the increased cases these agencies have due to the economy and the ban on horse slaughter, they have a body conditioning system they refer to that tells them how urgently the animals need to be removed. It's a sad reality and as much as it disgusts me to think of eating horse meat, the ban on horse slaughter made life much worse for many, many animals.

From what you've said, it at least sounds like the animals are not afraid of people, which will help in their rehabilitation once they are confiscated from the premises. Apples and carrots are the best idea for the horses, since giving them grain or other foods could cause problems if they aren't used to eating them. Just remember that if your kids are going to be feeding them anything from their hands, that they should feed with a flat palm so the horses don't accidentally bite in their excitement to get food. An even better option would be to take a bucket or feed pan to feed them out of to avoid being bitten.

Again, I am SO glad you took action and care about these poor horses. Keep me updated if anything changes with them!

Momma-That is so sad to her about the horses! But glad you called and glad to hear they already know about it. Just breaks my heart to hear about it. I love horses! They can give them to me! LOL

Thanks for the input on weighing. I have a scale at work I use and I have noticed that I usually weigh myself every morning and then on the weekends when I'm not daily weighing myself is when I have a gain. Maybe I should invest in one for home!
