    Kudos to you OP!

Also, I tend to disagree when people say soda isn't bad for you. I won't be replying to any responses though so don't bother trolling me - I'm not in the mood today. My opinion won't be changed no matter what anyway.

With that being said, I'll just leave these articles here for everyone's reading pleasure.

Good for you! That stuff is toxic!

Aspartame is broken down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid are amino acids and there's a much higher concentration of these aminos in a measly 4oz chicken breast than there is in diet soda. 1 Banana will yield more methanol than a 12oz can of soda. The dosage limits that can cause any issues are VERY HIGH, and you'd have to consume massive amounts to even detect any increased levels in a blood test. Cliffs: Diet soda is fine if you don't get headaches from it, and a very small % of people do. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17828671

Everyone should stop spreading rumors and old-wives tales.

and you should stop criticizing someone who's giving up junk food to be healthier. ;)

Dispelling pseudo-science propaganda is not what I'd call criticizing.

People get all freaked out when a tiny percentage of the population has a mild sensitivity to a man made chemical and so they think that it's must automatically be evil and deadly. Guess what? Nuts, tree fruits, shellfish, and other natural things are straight up deadly to some people.

science also prescribed leeching at one time.

    do we still do it?

yup - it can still be prescribed

Wow, great use of the straw man argument. I usually only encounter that sort of answer when I'm arguing against religion.

4 oz of chicken breast contains more of the chemical make up of aspartame than a case of diet coke. Better quit eating chicken.

Not true. It contains more phenylalanine, not aspartic acid.

I'm trying to go cold turkey on it too. Yesterday was the first day I was successful and didn't have a can of diet coke at all! I've been drinking water and tea.

Anyone know how good juices are for you when you are trying to lose weight? I know there's vitamins in it, but I just get turned away from it because of the calories and high sugar.

If you are trying to lose weight don't drink your calories.

in what way is it a strawman? you say science has PROVEN that aspartame has no ill effects. At one time scientists also felt that leeching had no ill effects.

    guess what?

    science can be wrong.

I broke myself of the Diet Dr. Pepper habit back in the fall. I have one once in a while now. I replaced it at the time with tea.

Now, I have a cup of coffee in the morning, water all day, and occasionally in the evenings, I'll have a Sparkling Ice orange mango water. The blackberry is good too.

that has been keeping people healthy in the east for thousands of years.

question for you - who has the highest rates of all the big diseases in the world? Us with our fancy government agencies and better science than anyone else. Who is almost always among the lowest? The Eastern countries, the Phillipines, India, etc, etc

You don't have to believe it, but just because something isn't patentable by a pharmaceutical company doesn't mean it isn't more effective. :)

To the op,I respect you choice to stop drinking diet soda today, now that being said I agree with others that its not bad (nor is it good) for you. To any one that says it bad, I would love to see studies to show it.

I mix a little juice with seltzer water. That cuts the calories and sugar in half, but it's still a lot healthier than pop (soda for you non-Pittsburghers). I am also one of those people who DOES use artificial sweeteners, but I'm trying to make the conscious decision to drink more water. I was feeling really good when I did that for about three weeks earlier this year, and I think it was a little easier to lose weight, too. Best wishes!

Life expectancy is a metric that should not be overlooked.

    The U.S. is 40th at 77.9

Philippines is ranked 129 with an average of 67.8

India is ranked 147 with an average of 64

In support of your point, Japan ranks #1 overall.
