Distinct lack of studies cited or supporting evidence in that blog there.
yyyyeah... it's a holistic website... typically aren't many peer-reviewed governmentally sponsored studies on their sites. (see the current argument)
What about non-government sponsored peer reviewed studies? Or any evidence?
take the post right above yours to heart, please.
Ironic post is ironic. I pointed out that the article had no peer reviewed studies or other evidence linked (and it was not even your post) - simple as that. You were the one who decided to weigh in with your conspiracy theories.
exactly. girl is cutting out an unhealthy food (which is a good thing) and your first post in the thread was to ask if there were any studies on that page that were evidence that aspartame is bad for you.
how bout encouraging the OP? or if you're not here to do that, why ARE you in this thread?
I do not agree that it is unhealthy in reasonable doses (unless you have PKU or a sensitivity to it). There was no evidence on that blog - which is why I pointed it out. I made an observation about the validity of a blog..simple as that. It was you who decided to make a big deal out of it.
ETA: if someone could come up with an actual peer reviewed studies showing it were, I would like to see it...knowledge and learning is good and understanding should never stagnate.0 -
Cherry Coke Zero is da bomb yo....
Diet Fresca is surprisingly tasty as well.0 -
Yay, OP. Sounds like a reasonable thing to do. I believe there are some research studies that support that the sweet taste can trigger certain cravings/insulin responses. (No, I don't have cites to them. Going entirely from fuzzy recollection too, so could be totally wrong.)
Personally, I've never tasted a diet soda I liked...but I haven't tried too hard to find one either. I've had two (regular) 12 oz sodas since 2005. I have trouble reconciling it...both diet and regular...with my general approach to diet.
That said, I haven't heard of any research that supports the conclusion that diet sodas are inherently dangerous for the general population either.
ETA: I've always been a little leery of any one food item that would cause distress to remove it from the diet for a month or two. Just seems like a potentially unhealthy habit (even when the food item in question isn't inherently unhealthy).0 -

I question the validity of the claim hidden in this personal attack.
Is there actual value in encouraging someone on to do something completely pointless and without merit?
why can't you support someone in what THEY are choosing to do? they aren't harming themselves by cutting out diet soda, are they? just because it isn't bad for them doesn't mean that its GOOD for them. if they said they were going to cut out all water in their diet, i would criticize. but not diet soda. support the OP or move on.
I would argue that my advice is actually better support than simply saying "good for you in doing that pointless thing." At least I'm offering the opportunity to do something constructive instead.
i just don't understand why you would tell someone that they shouldn't do something that they think will help them on their journey, and that (even if it won't help them) won't hurt them. i don't think that diet sodas are bad for you, i drink a couple a week. so don't think I'm on that side of this. i just believe that we should support the OP if what they are doing is not harming them. and cutting out diet sodas will not harm them.0 -

the unhealthiest thing about this thread is the idea that foods must be classified as "healthy" or "unhealthy". i would object to that first. it's a mindset that undermines more people than it helps because it creates a feeling of guilt or shame within those who believe it, whenever they are not able to avoid "unhealthy" foods. losing weight and getting fit is hard enough for some people, without layering a mental illness such as orthorexia nervosa on top of it. have you ever read the food diaries of someone suffering from an eating disorder who is deathly afraid to eat certain helpful foods because they've been convinced that the food is "bad" or "unhealthy" for them? i have. i know one who is afraid to eat foods with dietary fat because she's convinced that all of those foods are "bad" for her, even peanut butter... which would do wonders to help her reach her minimum daily calorie goal. so i do think the promotion of orthorexic thinking can have a negative effect on lots of people and i personally reject any philosophy that insists that certain foods must be labeled as "bad" or "unhealthy". the truth is that all foods are just fuel. if you know how to manage your macros, you can eat a nutritious diet that includes all sorts of foods, even the ones that are routinely maligned by clean and paleo eaters.0 -
Wow go you!! I am a huge diet coke addict and don't think I could give it up. I also used to be a smoker for 7 years, gave that up pretty okay.. but I found giving up my beloved diet coke too difficult! haha, I need to try again cos it is NOT good for me!!!!
Here's hoping you have great success! Woooah ya!0 -
Just like many other foods that are fine for most people, but bad for some. Strawberries for example, or mangos.
I just ate a mango and some diet dr pepper. Does this mean I will die?!?!? oh noes.
What if I throw in some strawberries in the mix... I've got some of those in the fridge.
brb... gonna go get some more diet soda.0 -

I didn't tell them not to do it. I said that it's pretty pointless and that energy could be better spent elsewhere. And if they decide to follow that advice and follow through, they would likely end up better off in the long run. Do you seriously think you are doing anyone a service by encouraging them to waste their time? I would not thank anyone for that.
Or do you believe that without quitting diet soda, the OP will eventually fail at all weight loss and/or getting healthy. (The journey you called it.). Because throwing that sort of assumption of their lack of resolve and capability in their face is far more hurtful than my pointing out that quitting diet soda is pointless.0 -
magerum, judging by your diary, you love processed junk. The pop tarts, ice cream, frozen dinners, two cans of soda. That stuff seems really healthy! good for you for living such a perfect life style!!
I do love my food. You forgot to mention the 1.5 lbs of chicken breast, 2.5 lbs of vegetables, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and almonds that I eat daily.
I would put my panels up against yours any day. Resting HR is 58, total cholesterol is 98 (yes, 9.8.) BP is 110/70... I could go on. Good luck with the food Nazi'ism (yeah I'm making up words now).
Yeah Magerum between your 158 lbs. lost and my 311 lbs. lost we apparently are 2 of the unhealthiest people on MFP for eating pop tarts and drinking diet pop...... Oh well guess it is time to go meet the maker....... lol..... OP you ultimately will have to make up your own mind up on this issue for you can see it has people on both sides of the fence..... Best of Luck though on whatever you choose......0 -

I'm just saddened that some people are unable to understand that saying "not unhealthy" is not the same thing as saying, "is healthy." It's simple logic and it seems to be beyond some people.0 -
YOU CAN DO IT... AND OF THIS MONTH I HAVE BEEN SODA-FREE FOR A WHOLE MONTH AND I DID IT COLD TURKEY! WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY... If anything I drink OJ on Sundays.... but thats as close as it get.. but only one glass. lol0

good for you! giving up something that you feel is inhibiting you on your weight loss journey is a strong thing for you to do! I'm proud of you (:
for the rest of you... stop creating online drama. support the original thread poster or move past the post entirely. there is no need to put down each others' opinions. no matter how RIGHT you think you are, you will never change the others' opinion. so stop trying.
have a good day everyone (:

Oh my Gosh! Good luck! I'm exactly the same, fully addicted. I stop for a couple days, then start again with a vengeance. Really hurting my wallet as well as my bloated wee tummy.
Might have to bite the bullet and just cold turkey tomorrow myself.0 -
Get some calorie free and sweetner free sparkling water. They have some that is naturally flavored and very low sodium too. It will help with the craving a bit since you will get the carbonation.0

I gave up cigarettes January 26th and Diet Coke February 1st. It is hard but doable. Good luck.0

you telling them that they are making a pointless choice is much more of a "throw in the face" than supporting them. they aren't making an unhealthy choice here, so why put them down?0 -
I'm right...no I'm right...my goodness. The OP decided to give up something she felt was hindering her, if it's the boost, kick, and jump start in the right direction, then pass on the encouragement.
If smoking was proven to be "ok" and "unharmful" or whatever, if I felt that me smoking 2 packs a day was effecting my want for a new lifestyle, and i no longer wanted to smoke, then I will take the steps to quit.
Don't come in and say.."well you can still smoke.."...that's not the point. I don't want to anymore..can't that in itself be supported?
and with all of the info on here, the OP or anyone else for that matter, can choose to have 1 diet soda a day and not feel like the world just ended.0 -

you sir, crack me up. i flat out told you that i don't believe that diet soda is bad for you. i don't believe in all the lies about how artificial sweeteners are worse for you than sugar, blah blah blah. i LOVE my diet soda. so what i have to say isn't about the diet soda, its about the OP making a personal choice that isn't harming them, and you putting them down for making their "pointless" decision0 -

Yes. Loving this. HAHA. :laugh:0 -
Agreed.
Also, I was drinking a six pack a day of reg. coke gain some weight no big deal. After 2000 I switched to Coke Zero and soon after that I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I didn't understand why, I have no sweet tooth to speak of except for an occasional piece of dark chocolate and they are very low in sugar. Being from Asia I stayed away from things that is normal to American, A birthday cake from supermarket is at least 3 times the sweetness I can stand. I do like Pasta though. but that's not enough to cause anything.
Until recently I saw this article from Yahoo's front page that your liver doesn't know the difference between regular sugar or Aspartame. and it treated aspartame like sugar. and can cause 33% more chance of Diabetes than sugar. Now I'd understand. I'm not doing this to win a argument. I do it so that other people can benefit from what I learned.
Also, the aspartame makers are trying to make their product an exception to the ingredient list on all dairy products. So if you get milk, even if it contains aspartame. will not be listed on the ingredient list.
Yes, I do question more than the usual person. That's why we are in the internet age. where we can openly share info and not be controlled only by the "mainstream" medias.
Peace
Brothers and SistersSee the Brain damage is setting in already. LOL. Go ahead, Drink all the Aspartame you will. I will stay away from that s*it
http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/recent.htmlGood for you! That stuff is toxic!
Aspartame is broken down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid are amino acids and there's a much higher concentration of these aminos in a measly 4oz chicken breast than there is in diet soda. 1 Banana will yield more methanol than a 12oz can of soda. The dosage limits that can cause any issues are VERY HIGH, and you'd have to consume massive amounts to even detect any increased levels in a blood test. Cliffs: Diet soda is fine if you don't get headaches from it, and a very small % of people do. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17828671
Everyone should stop spreading rumors and old-wives tales.
Really? You reference a voodoo witchcraft non-scientifically proven style of medicine?
that has been keeping people healthy in the east for thousands of years.
question for you - who has the highest rates of all the big diseases in the world? Us with our fancy government agencies and better science than anyone else. Who is almost always among the lowest? The Eastern countries, the Phillipines, India, etc, etc
You don't have to believe it, but just because something isn't patentable by a pharmaceutical company doesn't mean it isn't more effective.0 -
Also, the aspartame makers are trying to make their product an exception to the ingredient list on all dairy products. So if you get milk, even if it contains aspartame. will not be listed on the ingredient list.
This is a misunderstanding.
The issue is about sweetened milk like chocolate milk, and it is not about whether it will be on the ingredients label (it will be) - it's about whether they do not have to mention it in the descriptor of the food/drink
It WILL be on the label and it is not about basic milk.0 -

you telling them that they are making a pointless choice is much more of a "throw in the face" than supporting them. they aren't making an unhealthy choice here, so why put them down?
they aren't making either a healthy or unhealthy choice. they are making an arbitrary choice. that's the point. today it's soda. tomorrow it'll be wheat. the day after, it'll be corn syrup. before long, the list of foods labeled as "off limits" will be vastly longer that the foods labeled as "permitted". these sorts of restrictions, especially when they are not necessary (i.e. necessary would be ones mandated by a doctor to help with a medical condition), make it that much harder and unpleasant for many people to lose weight and get fit. deprivation leads to failure and if that failure has been wrapped in a cloak of "morality" (that may not be the best word, but a better word eludes me at the moment), then failure leads to guilt and shame. there's no reason for that either, except that somebody somewhere is selling a book and needs a villain on which to blame all of our health problems.0
