The only reason people ever use the debate "muscle weighs more than fat" anyway, is when they don't like the number they see on the scale and attribute it to "gaining muscle." So they say "oh well muscle weighs more than fat that must be why I haven't lost any weight. I'm gaining muscle, when instead they really haven't been pushing themselves that hard and that's why the number is what it is. You can't gain 5 pounds of muscle in a week.

Thanks but if, god forbid I ever blow my knees out in some unforeseen accident I think I'll take my sports physician/physical therapist's advice and opinion first. flowerforyou:

Be a good idea to get a couple different opinions on the subject from different docs and not trust one guy.

Many of them very much agree with me.

I tried to do a quote but I don't have it figured out yet. On the subject of squats, I have this to say. Having been a certified trainer before I got sick/disabled, I can tell you this. It isn't the squat that is causing damage to your knees. It is the manner in which you are doing your squat. There are ways to do them so that you do not damage your knees. If you have bad knees, then it is quite probable that your thigh muscles and calf muscles are the problem. They help support the knee joint. If they are bad, then your knees can get overstressed and damaged. So along with doing squats in the correct manner, you also need to be working those thighs and calf muscles.

    Brittaney,
While I too share your exasperation with people who opt to not be fit and then complain about it. Please be careful how you throw around comments about pain. I do not do squats or lunges because I've had reconstructive surgery on my knee 4 times and the pain is excruciating. I work on exercises to continue to gain muscle strength, but your comment was hurtful. In this community I think we all need to try to stay a little more judgement free.

At least someone else spotted this extremely insulting comment also. OP should really think before assuming everyone has the same capabilities as somebody else.

My apologies..... I would like to retract the generalization of what I posted. I think the fact that the person who said it, whom i know personally, decided to whip that excuse out of nowhere as knees have never been a problem to them before, really lit a fire under me. Regardless of any kind of suggestion i give, there's always some "reason" as to why it doesn't apply to them.

i guess i meant it more towards that person than the general public. i apologize once again. Thank you for pointing that out!

    OP HERE!!!

I requoted what i wrote on page 5 in response to those with knee issues and squatting....

again, my apologies for the generalization.

To those of you with "no time" commentary, are any of you full time working moms of small kids? Because seriously. Before kids I worked out 2hrs, 4 times a week. Now Im lucky to get 3x45minutes in. I truly dont have time to get the huge results from lots of time spent in the gym before I had my twins. Sure, I can prioritize gym over doing laundry and making my kids healthy meals, but that wont really help me in the clean undies and healthy kids dept either. I dont watch TV or mundane items like that either.

I can't stand "muscle weighs more than fat" Drives me nuts. 1 pound = 1 pound regardless of what it is made of. Muscle is denser than fat so 1 pound of muscle takes up less space than 1 pound of fat!

This. I've read it in like a million places on here, and it always makes me scratch my head.

ETA: I didn't see your response, OP, when I made mine. I get what you're saying, when its a particular person you know with issues or lack thereof.

    2) I actually heard this: "I can't squat because I have bad knees.... besides, it's not like i use that in my everyday life."

WHAAT?! No. You have bad knees BECAUSE you don't squat.

And if you don't think you use it in everyday life, i'd like to know how you get on and off the toilet.

My parents' doctors, PTs and surgeons would disagree. Squats can't rebuild lost cartilage or get rid of arthritis or reconstruct bone. My dad needs both knees replaced, after decades of running in combat boots. My mom needs one replaced after decades of standing/working on cement and then a car accident. And yes, getting on and off the toilet can be a challenge for them.

This is one of those things not to take lightly, and really people should heed the warning to consult their doctors if they've ever had any issues with their joints. I get your point of it being used as an excuse, but pain is natures way of telling you to pay attention.

Wow, this is the most judgemental posting zone I've seen here in a long time! Did this turn into MyFitnessTroll?

Perhaps it would be a little more helpful to those who are starting/struggling/not quite got their shxt together on the fitness bandwagon if people would share the myths and excuses THEY PERSONALLY relied on and HOW THEY OVERCAME THEM!

Complaining because someone else says they "don't have the time" only makes those of us who are currently struggling feel more on the outside --- like theres a river between us and I can't find the bridge.

    Etc Etc

You sound like me about the time thing, except I have 2x2 yr olds who need their mommy too. I feel for you. My gym also opens at 5:30...work at 7 etcetc and then I feel like crap for the rest of the day...

carbs are essential for energy. - TRUE. Starvation mode DOES exist. If you do not eat at regular times or not at all, then your body shuts down the metabolism rate and tries to conserve the fat to burn for fuel.

aaaand then i aplogize for calling you ignorant. :flowerforyou:

i've seen other posts from people claiming to be some sort of knee/squat specialist. i'd just like to say that there are many different kinds of knee issues. and some are not simply corrected by using proper form and/or strengthening your leg muscles.

P.S. WTH does everyone care how much water *other* people drink? I NEVER EVER DRINK PLAIN WATER UNLESS I HAVE A HANGOVER or am actively working out at the time. I feel great every day, much better than I did when I was forcing all that water down my throat.

It's not an excuse; it's just none of your business.

Wow. You're really going to debate this to the very bitter end aren't you? Sorry I didn't specifically say that I would get other opinions. My point is that I would take the opinion of someone who probably knows more -- INCLUDING my good friend who knows very respected and trusted PT's -- rather than someone on the internet who's credentials are unknown to me.

I have learned a lot about fitness over the years and what works for me. I have also learned that everybody is different. I think what I really hate are all of the commercials on the radio and TV right now telling people that they can lose that "belly fat" by taking a pill, no exercise, no change of diet. OH PLEASE!

Once got used to it, you'd feel better during the day. Just say'n. I workout from 4:30-6, work from 8-5.

Married, but not much help when as we speak Im on the east coast and he is on the west coast for work!

I used to be a NCAA DIv 1 swimmer, I know how to exercise and I like it. Im not overweight, the only time in my life I was overweight I was 9 months pregnant with twins. Im really really good with my diet. Its depressing not being able to put the extra gym time in, I do get some, just not anything like I used to. I just dont like being told that I really do have time and my priorities are not straight. Im just having a sensitive female moment, all the menfolk can roll their eyes now :-)

I work out from 4:30-6am, get ready for work, get my 4 and 2 year old out of bed, dressed, in the car and drop them off at daycare to be at work by 8. 35-40 min commute.

I used to work out 9 times a week from ages 14-22. If I didnt get used to it then, I wont be getting used to it at age 32! However, I still do it, I still feel like crap.
