The conspiracy to make (and keep us) fat...

Nope, don't want to waste the calories. I also have another reason for eschewing sugar. It raises uric acid levels.
That's too bad. I ate about 1900 calories today and found room for ice cream, just like I ate about 1750 calories yesterday and found room for ice cream.
Yum.
You should open your diary. Would be interesting to see what you're using all these calories on.0 -
I recently came across two reports that made me realize how much the choices we make affect our success.
The first one I heard on NPR. It was someone talking about how we’re “hard-wired”, …we’re made to want high fat, high calorie foods (and a lot of it). Our ancestors who ate as much of those things as they could, when they could are the ones who survived. The problem is, our ancestors didn’t have the abundance of these things that we do today. My take away? Don’t start eating these things, because it’s too hard to stop (and not just because I my willpower isn’t strong enough).
The other was an article in the NY Times magazine, that discussed how food manufacturers make the food we eat. The one thing that blew my mind? There is an actual term they use, called the “bliss factor” that is the point at which a food triggers a response in your body that makes you want to keep eating. Let me repeat this…they actually create foods with the goal to make it physically more difficult to put it down.
Wow, like it isn’t hard enough for me already! What this made me realize is that I really do need to focus on the items around the perimeter of the store. I have been aware of that for a while, but these two things made the light bulb go off for me…when I eat the things that are processed, I’m making it much harder on myself than it needs to be.
And why on earth would I do that?
Yep--food scientist know that humans prefer sugar, salt and fat in that order. And ice cream, because it contains all three in abundance, is the "perfect storm" of temptation.
Abundance? Here's what I've been eating daily for awhile now. I think we have different ideas of what abundance is. I'm guessing you'll ignore the fat and sodium, even though that's 2/3rds of your argument against ice cream.
The same serving size of Häagen-Dazs Vanilla is 270 calories. With 18 grams of sugar and 127 mg. of sodium. And while we are looking at it, really, who eats 1/2 cup of ice cream? Do you?
Nope, I eat 4. 127 mg of sodium and 18 g of sugar is hardly an abundance by any standard.
It is when you are trying to maintain your weight at 1,800 calories. Look, if you are a young body builder maintaining at 4,000 to 5,000 calories a day, you can afford to waste calories on junky food. To give a somewhat crude example, it's kind of like the multi-millionaire who can afford to lose $2,000 at the roulette table vs. the pensioner who loses $150 on the slot machines. The multi-millionaire shrugs and walks off to ride away in his limo. The pensioner cries because he knows that he will have to eat dog food for the next week.
I'm losing weight with a calorie goal of 1675, but I make room for ice cream pretty much every day. Yesterday I ate 1764 calories, of which 220 was ice cream. 136g protein, 57g fat, and 24g fiber.
So...... what's your argument again? That you can't eat ice cream with an 1800 calorie diet?
I could but at the expense of other nutrients that are important to me. I could criticize your diet but I choose not to.0 -

No one said anyone needs to eat like me. She's claiming there are inherent problems with a food like ice cream, and I'm exploring that claim.
No one asked you to defend her claim or opinion. You apparently don't even know what she's trying to express.0 -

Yet you people continue to yammer about "moderation" when that is clearly NOT working on a national basis. The problem is only getting worse.
She's a sugar "addict" so apparently everyone who practices moderation is wrong . . .
If you think that sugar is not addictive for some people, you are quite wrong. http://www.foodaddictionsummit.org/index.htm
And I am NOT a sugar addict, thank you very much. I actually never ate much sugar as an adult---but I ate a lot of it as a kid. I was hypertensive by the time I was a senior in high school too.
That must have been terrible. I'm so lucky to be healthy and still be able to eat sugar. Life is truly marvelous for some us I guess.0 -

Over 200 calories of peanut butter, 60 calories of cream, and 230 calories of cheese? You could easily cut back a little bit of each of those and have room for ice cream, if you wanted to.0 -
I KNOW the majority of people poo-poo so-called "conspiracy theories" but I'm NOT one of them. I believe one of the ways to absolutely rip people off and cheat them blind and control them is to do things in the open, so that even the mere "questioning" of something or other will make the crowds roar with boos and head wagging....
That said, be there a conspiracy to make us fat or not, I personally am fat because I've been lazy, slothful and gluttonous and live and eat irresponsibly and with a false feeling of "entitlement" to treat myself "good" and eat all kinds of junk and crap in the name of "this will make me feel better--temporarily". I have a new attitude and a new way of eating, drinking and thinking and a big part of it is to avoid like the plague the foods and drinks that the majority and corporate America says indulge in--because you can and should! Nope, no thank you, I don't care for any is my way now. Unpopular? Yep...so what!0 -

Over 200 calories of peanut butter, 60 calories of cream, and 230 calories of cheese? You could easily cut back a little bit of each of those and have room for ice cream, if you wanted to.
lol you really don't get it do you?0 -
Yet you people continue to yammer about "moderation" when that is clearly NOT working on a national basis.
Life is truly marvelous for some us I guess.
Your sangfroid notwithstanding, yes, you are lucky to be healthy. Life is more marvelous for me than you can possibly imagine. Have fun. I'm going to go read something interesting before I go to bed. Goodnight.0 -
Nope, don't want to waste the calories. I also have another reason for eschewing sugar. It raises uric acid levels.
That's too bad. I ate about 1900 calories today and found room for ice cream, just like I ate about 1750 calories yesterday and found room for ice cream.
Yum.

"...ETA: But I'm also not scared of eating fat...or sugar...or sodium...because I don't have any medical condition that would warrant being particularly mindful of that.."
*Cue the Star Wars music* Yoda: "You will be...you WILL be." The damage that is done is done over time. But we are already seeing 9 year-old kids with Type II diabetes. This is unprecedented. You gonna put those kids on a diet?
Huh? I am 41 years old. I am and have been a healthy weight/BMI/BF%. Any tests I have had have yet to show any problems. My four children ages 8 through 22 are and have been perfectly healthy. How would you have us eat differently and what makes you think you can predict our future health?
ETA: Whoops, sorry. I didn't realize how far off the tracks this thread had gone since this post.0 -

Unpopular? Yep...so what!

Many of us have heard of the "Bliss factor". I believe it. In fact, I eat foods that are delicious and make me feel great due to high sugar and fat content. However, I take responsibility for the things I eat, and don't go hog wild and blame it on the industry. It's hard to fight it when there are high calorie foods everywhere that you just want to keep eating. But in the end, it's up to the person whether or not they'll do what the industries want.
^ This.
You can look at this two ways, IMO.
1. It's a conspiracy and "food corporations" are in cahoots with the pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies and hospitals to get us sick and wring money from us.
or
2. We, as consumers, demand cheap, tasty, fattening food and the market is willing to provide it for us.
I think option #2 is much more likely.
you'd be wrong...#1 is the right answer. I know, because I work for a pharmaceuticals company. Nothing they love than sick people living longer....and the younger they get sick, so very much the better.0 -

they want us to all live a long time with at least one chronic malady that requires pharmaceutical treatment to control. 'tis the way of capitalism.0 -
I recently came across two reports that made me realize how much the choices we make affect our success.
The first time you realize it, it's mind blowing isn't it? I'm still taking it all in and I've known for awhile, it's hard to wrap your mind around in some aspects.
Some can eat one cookie or a bowl of ice cream and move on, some have that addictive personality that can't eat one or they lose control. I'm not someone that can typically eat one, so I strive to stay away and make other healthy choices that work better for me.That was all covered very well in movie: Hungry for Change

I don't see why it can't be both, I believe it is! #2 is why there IS #10 -

Yep, exactly, just like Shakeology. The corporations are killing us *shiver*0 -
Fat is the byproduct of the conspiracy to get us addicted to the junk that provides shareholders with loads of profits.
Yes, we are responsible for what we eat, but no, we shouldn't be sold these products without the same kind of health warnings that are on a pack of cigarettes.0 -

Yes, we are responsible for what we eat, but no, we shouldn't be sold these products without the same kind of health warnings that are on a pack of cigarettes.
Well they would have to put that warning on literally every food product on the market. You can get fat and diabetic just as well eating "clean" and "healthy" food as you can "junk" food. Too much avocado, coconut oil, white rice, whole grain bread, butter, organic peanut butter, etc, will make you just as fat and sick as too much ice cream and potato chips.
Conversely, eating these foods - any of them - in moderation in the context of a healthy diet with appropriate caloric and macro content will not lead to those problems.0
