Grocery Store Snob??

Has this happened to anyone esle? I fear I am becoming a grocery store snob. I look in other people's carts at the checkout and mentally gloat at my healthier choices or I am just totally shocked that the cart half full (maybe 3 bags worth) of junk cost more than my weeks worth of nutiritous food. I try to stop myself because we have all been there but it seems to happen every time.

I definitely notice at the check out line. Then I'm paranoid that other people are looking at me when I buy anything processed.3

Yep, that's me. What's really hard is to bite my tongue when other people feel the need to comment on my healthy choices while their cart is filled with junk. This has happened to me a few times.2

Yes, definitely me especially at the checkouts if my shopping is next to someone elses - mine is a sea of green veggies, cheeses and creams and meats next to someones boxes o sugar flakes and other flashy processed items.6

Really, what teasing you about the lettuce and turkey burger???? I would have a hard time not returning the favor and asking about their cheesy poofs, oreos and the ever balancing option of gluton free Chex cereal (yes I saw this in the same cart)2 -
I won't call myself a snob, but I'm just more shocked that my cart used to look like that. I'm more aware of the calorie content of everything. I look at what other people eat, and all I see is numbers (calorie amount) instead of food. I definitely try to remind myself that I was once in that position. I wasn't aware of what I was eating. I would buy what I liked instead of worrying about nutrition. I also slightly become proud of myself for how far I've come. I don't view it as a bad thing really. I view it as a fact that we have made a lifestyle change. It is showing us that we think and view food differently. As long as you are not giving them "dirty looks" or making snide comments, I don't think you are doing anything wrong.7

lol for real?2 -
I have naturally become more interested I suppose! I am never really shocked, but sometimes I catch myself thinking "that was me before"! I don't think I would have had any greens or fruit in my trolley this time like 5 years ago! I was young when I started dieting!1
-
im opposite. i feel like and have actually had people comment on my cart full of veggies and fruit and protein bars so i prefer to hit self checkout1
-
Unless they comment about your cart, IMO, you don't have the right to say anything about there's. I think the same way as you do when I see a cart with junk, but I don't think it's snobby to observe that you made healthier choices than someone else.3
-
I check out others carts too. When I see someone that is very overweight and all they have is a cart full of junk I just want to put it all back on the shelves and help them shop for better options. I'm convinced if I could just show them how to they can eat healthy on a budget and that it doesn't have to be all rabbit food that they'd change their ways and be healthier and thank me for it.6

^^^ this. Happens to me all the time. :laugh:0 -
I'm always checking out other shopper's carts -- sometime I want to say "Good for you!" to the stranger ahead. And when I see ice cream and cookies in another's cart I just think "too bad" and hope they get it soon.6
-
I tend not to think about it, because I used to be on the other end and was always self-conscience that people were judging my poor choices of food!!5

I only shop at Trader Joe's because it's in my building. I still have my chips, ice-cream, wine, etc along with all of my healthy meals. It all just has less chemicals than other grocery stores. I don't really look at what people buy, but my cousin is a "couponer" and posts pictures of all that she buys and saves. It's all processed junk and that I judge because I feel bad for her three kids.5

Nope; the only thing I look at concerning their cart is how much they are buying so I can decide if I need to find a shorter line or not. I've never paid attention to what others buy, but I've seen people eyeing my stuff; whether they are doing so intentionally or are just staring into space and that's where their gaze falls, I have no idea.11
-
I don't really give a *kitten* what is in anybodies cart.
What pisses me off is having a coupon for all 125 d@mn items in your cart...and then arguing over 15 cents.9 -
It's called being smug. And I see nothing wrong with it.3

My cart is all over the place: organic baby spring mix, chicken breast, Greek yogurt, whole-grain bread, Eggland's Best eggs, cottage cheese, baby carrots, Pop-Tarts, ice cream, Tastykakes, Cap'n Crunch. Some of the treats are mine, some are my husband's and/or teenage son's. I don't much care what people think, but I suppose some might find the mix of items amusing.6

as a vegan, i particularly notice the difference between my cart and others'...
mine: PACKED with fresh fruits and veg, cans of beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc
theirs: hamburger helper, Entemenns, meat-meat-meat....LORD!
PS: i USED to eat that way too. no wonder i got up to 220 lbs!!!!!6 -
i have had checkers comment on my food choices, and coupons, etc. and the fact that we eat VERY little meat, not becuase of health , but economy
i can buy 1 lb of steak for 7.99 or i can get 3 lbs of apples, 3lbs of oranges and 2 lbs of bananas ...
hmm.... tough choice1 -
I giggle when its full of junk and they have diet soda.
I always share a trolley so no idea what people think of mine, dont care either lol2 -
Yep I do that!0

I look around out of curiosity. There are a lot of obese people in the small area I live in, and so I look at their carts as visual reminder of why I eat the way I do - those foods that they're buying aren't good lol.
I'm not making fun or anything - that used to be me.
However, as someone else mentioned I also get weird looks sometimes because my cart is usually filled with just meat, and veggies, or condiments (like oils, and such.)2 -
Hahaha totally! Usually my cart is full of fresh fruit, veggies, meat, eggs and milk.
The people around me... 3-4 bags of chips, pop, frozen meals... can't help but "tsk tsk" in my head.1 -
Nope. I mind my own business.
This!
Couldn't possibly care less what someone else has in their cart. However, when I was eating unhealthily I did worry about what others thought when I was checking out.
I think the only time I notice what someone else is buying is if they egregiously go over the allotted number of items in the express lane.

When I got thrown out of the grocery. I took a bag of Doritos out of this larger family's cart and said. "*****, you be killing yourselves, go buy an apple." Then I threw the bag under the cart and tried to roll over it, but it got caught weird and just pushed the bag in front of the cart down the aisle. I had to pick up the bag and I gave it back to the lady, and just walked out till the manager caught me.
now I do feel a little weird at my combo of healthy food vs processed stuff and things for my kids. When I buy Doritos now I just envision that I am purchasing it for a different purpose.

I do get some odd looks sometimes because my trolley is often 2 thirds very healthy, 1 third 'junk' or processed. I am partial to the odd chocolate bar every now and then and my partner eats convenience foods a couple of times a week, so it probably looks a little miss-matched!1
-
i have had checkers comment on my food choices,
I get comments from checkers too. Usually asking if some vegetable is good or how I prepare it. And if at all possible I look for one of the older clerks that have been at the store longer because the younger ones don't seem to know what any of the vegetables are, which is just sad.0 -
At least it sounds like you're still shopping at normal people stores. If you ever start bragging about how you pay triple to shop at some store like Whole Paycheck or worse, some hippy co-op, then that's when you know you've really gone off the deep end.3
