Grocery Store Snob??

Oh I thought you were talking about being a snob about which grocery store you go to... because that is me... but what's in peoples carts... Not really... because I'm sure someone is to me... I generally shop at two grocery stores, I get my fresh food at one and my household supplies and processed foods at the other.3
-
My issue is with those who get in the 12 item or less line with more than 12 items.3
-
Yea I judge, too.
On the other side of that, when I decide to splurge and get something unhealthy, I feel completely self-conscious about my not-so-healthy choice and try to bury it under my fresh stuff0 -
I don't really pass judgment at the grocery store, only because I know there's a lot of picky kids that will only eat certain things (I'm remembering my little brothers and chicken nuggets!) and there are some people who legitimately have no idea how to cook, so they buy microwavable stuff, etc.
I am more of a restaurant snob. I silently judge when I see people devour basket after basket of bread and oil, then order a big creamy pasta meal, then dessert. I add up the calories in my head and am just blown away that they chose to order/eat all that stuff.1 -
I try to focus on what I am eating. Its more motivating to me to focus on myself and others that I want to be like. I am more of a snob in the sense of changing where I shop due to the stores availability of having fresh, organic foods. I don't like going to stores that have crappy selection.3

When I got thrown out of the grocery. I took a bag of Doritos out of this larger family's cart and said. "*****, you be killing yourselves, go buy an apple." Then I threw the bag under the cart and tried to roll over it, but it got caught weird and just pushed the bag in front of the cart down the aisle. I had to pick up the bag and I gave it back to the lady, and just walked out till the manager caught me.
now I do feel a little weird at my combo of healthy food vs processed stuff and things for my kids. When I buy Doritos now I just envision that I am purchasing it for a different purpose.
Awesome!!!! Love the visual. Watch out for the Dorito Bandito!0 -
I hate grocery shopping, seriously HATE it. I go in with a list, get in and get out. I do not enjoy it in any kind of way. So no, I do not notice what others are buying and don't care.
Imagine how tortuous it is for me to shop with my husband who likes to leisurely browse the aisles for "something new" to try out. Ugh!0 -
Ehhh, wouldn't really say that I gloat or usually feel that judgmental - except for when I see things that I just consider to be the epitome of gross like Vienna sausages, GIANT blocks of off-brand processed cheese, etc. Sorry if anyone eats those ;-) My cart does have a lot of healthy stuff but I always have some that's a little junky - one of my unshakeable weaknesses continues to be flavored coffee creamer which honestly I never intend to give up . But, I do love my fruits, veggies, healthy carbs (couldn't live without sweet potatoes and oatmeal, and natural PB (generally the sweetened stuff just tastes off to me now) so it is weird to think that people can totally live without these things.1

Has this happened to anyone esle? I fear I am becoming a grocery store snob. I look in other people's carts at the checkout and mentally gloat at my healthier choices or I am just totally shocked that the cart half full (maybe 3 bags worth) of junk cost more than my weeks worth of nutiritous food. I try to stop myself because we have all been there but it seems to happen every time.
Lololol, must be like the feeling when you look at an overweight person's cart of "healthy" foods while you're in shape and have a cart mixed with "healthy" and "unhealthy" foods0 -
I generally stick to my cart. The people who give me the wow factor are the larger men and women who get in the motorized buggies and fill the basket up with nothing but junk. You know the ones who are a chip away from a heart attack or diabetes but still load their carts with fried chicken from the deli. And it isn't really a negative thought about them, I just makes me feel sad for there kids and their family who will be with out a parent, child or sibling when the inevitable happens.2

At least it sounds like you're still shopping at normal people stores. If you ever start bragging about how you pay triple to shop at some store like Whole Paycheck or worse, some hippy co-op, then that's when you know you've really gone off the deep end.
I would totally support the hippies if they opened a co-op in my area.1 -
Well, kinda sorta I reckon...except I don't really look at what other people are buying--when I'm shopping at regular grocery stores, I'm actually hoping that people ARE looking at what my cart is filled with and it inspires them to shop more around the perimeter of the store too like I do. In regular grocery stores, I have had people tell me my cart looks great many times--not so much in my usual food/grocery shopping places though. Also, I love and regularly shop at grocery specialty type of stores (like organic markets, Health Food stores, Trader Joe's and places like) that far more than I shop at regular grocery stores--and in those health food/organic/specialty stores, I do look at/in others carts to see something new or a healthy yummy that I want to add to mine as well.
I will confess that when I do shop at regular grocery stores, if/when I buy junk type of foods, I don't put it in my cart with the rest of my groceries...but put it in the bottom of the cart with the bleach, detergent and other type of non-food stuffs...:huh:1 -
It's called being smug. And I see nothing wrong with it.
There is definitely something wrong with being smug. It is a very ugly trait. How you eat does not make you better than another person. And you're basing this on one shopping trip worth of food.
I put a great deal of effort into planning my families meals and shopping, and i do look at others peoples carts sometimes with sadness for their families. I am happy with myself because of the healthy choices I make but not because someone else's purchases are making me feel superior.8 -
Lol. I'm probably one of the ones you're passing judgment on. I buy chocolate, ice cream, cookies and chips. I must be a special snowflake because I've lost 65 pounds.
You don't know people, so get over yourself.7 -
I don't really pay attention, but I did have an interesting experience a couple of weeks ago.
I was waiting in line to check out and the customer in front of me was having a conversation with the cashier about the diet she was starting. She had a couple of bottles of some kind of expensive juice, and several packaged products. Maybe 2 bags worth if items. Her total was almost $100.
I had a cart full of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and meat, and my total was around $30. I'll admit I felt pretty smug about it.
(this was at Sprouts for those familiar with that store)1 -
The thing that gets me is when those three bags of processed food in their cart cost the same as my one bag of "healthy" choices. Eating right is expensive!1

One of the things I hate most about this new healthy lifestyle is the food snobbery that comes with it. For the record, my husband hates this even more. I used to get so annoyed at folks who were self-righteous about their food choices. And nowadays I find that I get that way too. That being said, I love my treats and my grocery cart is filled with both "good" and "bad" foods.
I've been losing weight and building muscle, though. So if some passerby wants to judge me for my two boxes of nonni's biscotti or my husband's 100 calorie packs or the occasional treat from the bakery, then let them.
If I catch myself judging others, I'll try to stop it in its tracks...but no guarantees.
It's a battle for sure...staying down to earth while making healthy choices.0 -
Yep, that's me. What's really hard is to bite my tongue when other people feel the need to comment on my healthy choices while their cart is filled with junk. This has happened to me a few times.
I do not bite my tongue. A couple of years ago a lady commented on my cart "no wonder you are so skinny, look at all that healthy food" To which I pretty much replied, umm, well, yeah. So she goes, I can not afford to eat healthy. I added up the FOOD in my cart and it totaled 36 dollars. We totaled up JUST THE JUNK FOOD, aka soda, chips, snack cakes, ice cream and so on and it was FORTY BUCKS! Then she says, well, I have to have snacks for the kids. So before I got into a fight with a woman about her choosing to feed her kids crap food, I just smiled and walked away.
Now I carry business cards with my healthy cooking facebook page and cooking blog address on it. I had it to them and tell them if they would like help getting healthy, I would be happy to do it.6 -
I like to worry about myself. I notice what other people buy, but they can do whatever they want with their money.
But in all honesty, what if you saw someone with an athletic build buying 'processed' food. Would you judge them?
Most of the people who jump on these health trends aren't in any better physical shape than people who just buy whatever they want. It's just a mental feeling of superiority they have for thinking they know more than somebody else.
Buy what you want, work out, be happy.3 -
why mingle with the pesents and their gluttonous shopping habbits? have it delivered and spare yourself the disgust!!! (joke)1
-
Not so much scrutinizing their cart but I fin that these days I am proud of what I have in mine compared to theirs.0

My issue is with those who get in the 12 item or less line with more than 12 items.
Me too! And the folks who want to have a philosophical discussion (I exaggerate....a little) :explode: with the cashier. PLEASE, MOOOOOVE along!!0 -
I do look in other people's baskets, but it's something I'v always done so I'm not sure if I really gloat over it. A lot of times I'm interested to see what the really fit people have. One thihng that's always bothered me though, when you see a grocery cart with both really good (healthy) food and some really crappy food. Then you might over hear mom or dad or whomever say...."no, that's for me, this is your's (handing the child a box of cookies, chips etc.). It never made sense to me to do something like that. Otherwise, yea I'm a peeker, lol.0
-
Nope. I mind my own business.
this^^
They're choices are they're own just like my choices are my own. I'm pretty self absorbed in healthy eating and fitness so I don't compare myself with others - food, workouts, etc.
Also I try not to be so...judgemental.2 -
Our cart is always a mix...my partner doesn't eat the way I do, her needs and preferences are different. And there are a few less healthy things I don't want to give up...like coffee creamer. But in general our cart is full of much healthier and fresher things than it used to be. It does sometimes make me sad to see the very obese mom with the very obese children at the store...and their cart is full of chips and icecream and cookies and full sugar soda, no veggies or fruit, no lean meats, nothing to make a decent meal with. Mom can do as she likes, she an adult....but the kids are doomed.0
-
I'm guilty!! Then a few weeks ago while I was grocery shopping and had a cart full of veggies and fruits, my guy texts me and asks me to get him a pie. I was emarrassed to even have it in there.0

I can be if you want it to be. But it doesn't have to be.0 -
It's a little hard to pass judgement when your carts full of condoms and vodka.8

Which is why I LOVE Giant's scanners and self check out. Whole process takes about 5 minutes....when do don't have to wait for the cashier to do the whole audit thingy.0 -
*lol* I have noticed what is in another person's cart maybe 3x in my entire life...0
