Although if anyone honestly read that book for a "good read" then they were kidding themselves. It's EROTICA, books in that genre aren't intended to intellectually stimulate...

That statement is ridiculous. You've been reading the wrong type of romance/erotica then. The best cause all sorts of stimulation, especially for the intellect.

A lot of these responses makes me think some people have never read good erotica...

Which, good for them! I suppose.

Edited to Add; Random tidbit! For my 16th birthday my grandmother provided me with an erotic novel. It was the most awkward and bizarre thing.

I read all three and loved my Mommy porn. My husband didn't mind the affect it had either. Of course, highly unrealistic, but I still was addicted to Christian....

    Ditto!

Um, yeah. Ditto again.. Sorry y'all, but E.L. James didn't write this book to be considered one of the greatest writers of all times, she wrote it because these were fantasies that were in her head, so she decided to write about it. Get over it. Obviously she did something good because I'm not a reader AT ALL, but I finished all three books in a matter of about three weeks. Couldn't put it down.

    Let's see:

·First book ever to sell 1 million copies on the Amazon Kindle (myself included)
·16 million copies sold so far in the US alone
·Beat out J.K. Rawling's Harry Potter series as far as how fast it's sold
·765,000 copies sold in the first two weeks (took The Da Vinci Code over six months to reach this number

Need I go on?? If you don't like it, fine. No one's telling you have to. But just because it's not your cup of tea and you expected the writing to be up there with Shakespeare's work, doesn't mean you need to absolutely bash the author and her books.

    Enough said.

What do you mean this book sucks?

:::Grabs you by the chin and lifts your head up:::

    Seriously? This book is amazing

    {{{{Blushes}}}}

I don't know anyone who *kitten* their head to the side as much as Christian does. Is he a human or a dog?

I got pushed into reading this by coworkers and let me tell ya....they all said it was great....after reading just half the book ::::blush:::: I think I work with a bunch of kinky co workers!!! +++TMI+++ and no I don't think its great. Plus....she writes American terrible!!! Who was she fooling???

    Oh well...I will read the trilogy and then make a profit on ebay.....they are going for much dinero on there. I tried buying my copies cheap and cheap wasn't happening {{gasp, intake of breath}}

Amazon had the cheapest price for the tril if anyone is interested! I can at least get my money back!

    {{{*kitten* head to one side }}}} 'K?

OMG! *spitcoffeesmiley* Funniest thing I've read all day! LMAO. I love it!

And um, when people talk about Mr. Grey (good God, just being reminded of the Mr. and Ms bs makes me gag) as abusive, I don't believe they are referring to the spanking per se. It's that he told her what to wear, who she could talk to, what to say, etc. Duh.

I'm interested to know what kind of books everyone else is reading. Mostly the ppl who are so opinionated about hating 50 shades.

Read them and loved them. Though I have to admit by about the middle of book three I was craving more of a plot. But overall I really enjoyed them.

I just have one question............Where can I find my own personal Christian Grey?

There are many Christian Greys in prison...just get yourself a pen pal...I'm sure you can change him too!

    Hahaha. Yep.

Compare it to some Danielle Steel, Jackie Collins, Stephen King etc... sucks!! People need to compare it to other books from the same genre...

I would guess that most people who dislike this book and say bad things about it, don't read Erotica books, ever. Then they go and compare them to the books you mentioned. I think in reality most people are ignorant and get the idea that it's a forbidden subject somewhere along the lines or something to read those books, just like a lot of girls are against porn. IMO. I try to keep an open mind. When I first heard it i didn't know what it was. WHen I learned that it was an Erotica book, I knew it wasn't going to be a great plot, but even then I still find it highly intriguing. Maybe it helps that I have an open mind when it comes to sexual stuff, when most people don't tend to. :\

Lots of women are against porn because they believe it makes men behave violently and think women are just there for their enjoyment. I think that theory is bull crap; porn is just there for entertainment, and those who know the difference between right and wrong will treat others right, regardless of how many hours of porn they watch.

Just curious though, how much erotica have you read? I have read erotica online on fanfic websites -- and guess what? Not only did these pieces have STORIES, believable characters, believable internal and social conflicts, believable interations between characters, appropriate responses/emotions (as opposed to Christian's crazy mood swings), and reasonable resolutions, but they were also ACTUALLY erotic -- unlike Fifty Shades of Boring. My guess is that this was named "mommy porn" because it's so "soft" that even a mother could handle it. In fact, it's so soft that I usually read it right before bed, and instead of doing anything exciting, it puts me right to sleep! Anyway, back to your point, porn usually does have a lousy plot and lousy acting...and it would be so much more exciting for me if it looked real. Similarly, if I'm going to READ "porn" then I have already lost the visual and aural aspect of it, and I'd like some good writing to supplement that loss.

I think it sucks all around. The author said she wrote it on her Blackberry on her way to work. It also started out as Twilight fanfiction..

Anyways, it's written poorly, the plot is very dumb, and Christian Grey is technically "flawless" in this book, which is very impossible. Older women like the book though, so I guess I'm not one to judge being my age. I just think it' very stupid and I roll my eyes every time I see any of the authors books while out shopping.

I endured the first book of Twilight because of all the hype. Then I endured the first book of Dragon Tattoo because of all the hype. I learned my lesson, and did not succumb to this book. After reading this review, THANK YOU JESUS I didn't. This sounds horrible!

It is an erotica... it's basically book porn... so yeah plot? sucks... but really when watching actual porn do you expect amazing acting and a super intense plot? no, well it's the same with Erotica books... Either way I'm an avid reader of Erotica and many other types of books from very well known writers and I really liked the series. Compare it to many other erotica's... it was great! Compare it to some Danielle Steel, Jackie Collins, Stephen King etc... sucks!! People need to compare it to other books from the same genre...

You shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions about why people dislike this series. I've read a lot of erotica and romance novels, so I have no problem with any sort of sexual stuff. I've read my fair share of BDSM stuff as well. So, I have a lot of stuff to compare this book to and it falls short compared to any erotic and/or romance novel I have ever read in terms of the plot, writing and the sexual stuff.

Literotica.com has better erotic fiction and it's free.

Also, just because it's erotica doesn't excuse it from not having some sort of plot that doesn't revolve around sex. At least that's what I think.

    THIS!

I recently read Voice of the Crow, because it sounded like (and was) an awesome series. While the sex scenes surprised me, because at first I thought it was a young adult novel, I welcomed them, one, because they were HAWT, but also it adds more reality to it. People have sex, why not have it included in stories? It's like characters in movies/books never having to pee, or eat. We're human people, we all have human needs. Sex has its place it writing.

I think I made my point, but I'm not sure anymore after talking about people pooping.

Read this review a while back. I haven't read the books because I was just hesitant, but now I'm certain I will never read them. No mommy porn for me!

Yeah, why do you need mommy porn when you have real porn?

I managed a total of five pages of the book before the appalling writing got to me.

    This was far better written.

I was looking at it at the bookstore a few weeks ago...I couldn't even get through 5 paragraphs. Felt like it was written for 12 year olds or something. I don't get all the fuss, there are so many better things out there to read!

If you like erotica, you're better off reading Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy. She wrote it under the pen name A. N. Roquelaure. I read it about 20 years ago in college...

Just because books are published does not mean they're well written. Look at Twilight.

Halfway through George R.R. Martin's "A Storm of Swords" (Game of Thrones series). Just started Robert Jordan's "The Gathering Storm" (Book 12 in the Wheel of Time fantasy series), just finishing "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"--second attempt at it, didn't get into it the first time and took it back to the library after the first chapter...I usually try to give books a second chance if possible...that one was worth another try...Also just started "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" and "Chi Marathon." And I'm reading a Lisa Gardner novel "Catch Me" and "Death Walker by Aimee and David Thurlo (Native American policewoman series)...what can I say? I read a lot...I just don't get all the "50 Shades" hype. I don't hate it...I just think it's poorly written.

Sadly I agree...I started reading the Twilight series when the first movie was about to come out (again, didn't get the hype. My kinda vampires are like Louie and Lestat in "Interview With the Vampire. They DON'T sparkle LOL). Another poorly written series...the movies are a bit better...but I didn't even start the last book.

James you should read those too! I will say this you should read the back to see if you are even remotely interested in it! It also says right on the back that it is Erotic Romance! but anyways happy reading to everyone that enjoys it!

P.S. My boyfriend loved the affects of the books!
