    Coffee is awesome breakfast!

This.... Coffee is vital. If I do not consume it in the morning I will have my first "cardio event" of the day as I go medieval on anyone around me. Burns calories, but draws an awful lot of attention.

On a serious not, when I bike commute to work I generally only have a single cup with cream and sugar to wake up and then bike hard for 1 hour to work. There I will eat a light breakfast or a PBJ sammich to refuel... I love breakfast....a little to much so I avoid it.

Everyone is different when it comes to breakfast. Personally, if I don't eat breakfast I turn into a raging hellbeast within an hour or two. And coffee is disgusting to me any time of day. If your friend is having problems with weight, it's probably because she's not eating right throughout her day, not necessarily because of her morning coffee routine. But she might want to give real food (something small with protein maybe) a try in the morning. It might work for her...:flowerforyou:

Personally, I always eat breakfast, but my mom doesn't and she doesn't have a weight problem.

Your co-worker is probably eating too much for her level of activity regardless of when she is eating.

It's probably not a big deal either way. For me Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day! I prefer having a small dinner and big breakfast :-) maybe I'm on my own with that one haha

Coffee is usually my breakfast! I have to force myself to eat in the mornings. I won't get hungry until like 11.

And no, you don't "need" breakfast. Just keeps you satiated and more likely not to binge later.

This comes down to personal preference and nothing more... There is no timing of meals or jumping starting anything.... That being sad I personally have my morning coffee with about 800 (calories) of its little friends.... LOL I eat between 3200-3400 calories a day so I prefer to get my day started with a big breakfast (I workout in the mornings) plus I am a type 2 diabetic so after fasting all night, My body is ready for a shot of anything to get my blood sugars up.... But it really comes down to what works best for you... Best of Luck...
  • I always just have coffee. It fills me and gives me energy so I don't see the point in adding food.

perhaps but it isn't breakfast without coffee.

Maybe she can't eat while she drinks coffee. I can't. If I'm having coffee then its coffee by itself and I'll eat a few hours later.

Lots of coffee is the ultimate breakfast.

But debated with me about the fact that coffee is a perfectly acceptable breakfast and that would be enough to "jump start" her metabolism.
You're right about one thing: coffee will not jump start your metabolism. Nothing will. Your metabolism runs all the time as long as you're alive.

Ask any zombie. It's not coffee which keeps them going.

On the other hand, I don't know if zombies have actually tried coffee. It could work!

It's a nice thought, but nothing will save us from the Zombie Apocalypse.

So the verdict is, no matter what you eat for breakfast, if you have too many calories later, you won't lose weight.

There may be *some* truths here and there for *some* of these little optimizations, like eating this or that or when or not when to eat. But my impression is that such *optimizations* might normally amount to *at most* a handful of calories at the end of the day.

It's certainly nothing that most of us would ever need to care about. I can kinda see every little bit helping if you're at 10% body fat and shooting for 8%, or trying to lose the last couple of hard fought pounds, or something of that nature. But otherwise your energy is better placed in watching macros and calorie deficit. And getting to the gym.

All of these supposed solutions don't amount to more than a tiny fraction of what the typical MFP'er needs to be doing daily, and are basically *well overshadowed* by putting that cookie down!

If I don't eat a good breakfast I overeat at dinner and snack afterwards.

Besides, how many studies of school kids do you need to look at it to see that people work better when they eat?

i switched from regular coffee to a latte in the morning bc of the milk---added protein, calories, carbs, etc! and i usually have some fruit as well:) breakfast is not my meal- i am rushed and often not hungry in the am--so this seems to do it for me:) i do eat a relatively early lunch, though:)

I have always been a breakfast eater. I really like McDonald's new blueberry banana nut oatmeal and that has been my breakfast of choice for quite a while now. I just do better with breakfast.

I'm not a growing child (I'm a grown child!) and so my nutritional requirements are different.

Not to mention, those kids not getting breakfast probably aren't getting enough the rest of the day either. :(

I drink coffee WITH my breakfast, but no.....coffee alone is not an acceptable breakfast. IMO

I love breakfast and always eat it. However, I do not think it's a must. You can lose weight and be healthy without eating breakfast.
  • Coffee is a part of my breakfast but I eat it everyday. It's just something that works for me.

I always try and have a biggish meal for breakfast, so I'm not left hungry during the day...
Having nothing usually leads to over-eating later in the day, it isn't healthy.

Sometimes, coffee is all it takes to fill me up, so I'm not going to MAKE myself eat in addition to that if I'm not hungry. The coffee I make (with yummy creamer) really is all the breakfast I need on some days.

Tea and a banana, pretty much 80% of the time, works for me.
