Grunting at the gym

True story, this morning there was this fairly attractive guy on a machine in front of me who was lifting weights and grunting like an animal. Well more like sex grunts really, I will admit it was kind of hot but awkward. Has anyone else experienced this or do it?

It's a mating ritual. Grunt back.0

I dont use machines OR grunt. Perhaps the latter will happen at some point.0
-
I grunt when I lift. I can't help it. Plus it makes my lifts go up.0
-
If you don't grunt while lifting, you're not lifting enough.0
-
I may grunt a little bit on the last reps of a set, but not like an animal!0
-
Hahahaha yesssssss!!!!!!! A guy at my gym would grunt/moan loudly and I couldn't help but giggle every time, it was hilarious and awkward at the same time0

Grunting is wasting energy you could be putting towards your lift.
Of course some just happen and that is OK.0 -
Excessive or loud grunting is stupid!0

 OMG!!!! Yes. There is this one guy at the gym, I know when I see him that I'll have to crank the music on my MP3 so I don't laugh out loud. Maybe it really does help as LilMiss says. After all, if you grunt when you hit the ball in tennis it makes it go faster..... all the pros do it......0

Grunting is OK if the weight you are lifting causes the barbell to bend.0

attention deficiency syndrome ?0

lol Too funny0 -
I'll sometimes drop a small grunt on a heavy lift especially when it's the last on a set but definitely not loud enough to be heard from on the other side of the gym, that's for sure.0

grunting is fine. snorting and moaning is gross. there is one guy at my gym and he like snorts on his own sweat while doing cardio. if that makes sense.0

Grunting, groaning, sweating and anything else that occurs in the gym doesn't bother me.0

Have you ever seen professional weight lifters? They're basically screaming while lifting weights. It's a natural thing to do.0 -
lol a tiny bit of grunting is normal. Even I have been known to let out a grunt or two! HOWEVER, you gotta wonder about those guys that sound like they are having a baby. I really don't think that is necessarily hahahaha I saw a guy once that literally was yelling "AHHHHH!!!!" like he was the Incredible Hulk or something. Good thing I own an ipod haha.0

Grunt back. Then chest bump.0

Sometimes. But the one that stands out to me....the guy that COUNTS really loudly! I love it, it really cracks me up. I laugh just thinking about it! He really messes me up on my reps...lol0

It's a mating call. If he's hot, grunt back and stomp your feet. That way he knows your interested. If he's not hot, laugh at him and hopefully he'll stop. lol0

There was this one time...at my apt gym...this other guy was making the same exact noises as the OP mentions. It was quite awkward and I couldn't help but laugh. Then he left and my workout got serious again.0

Grunting is essentially the same as Kiai. It's for focusing energy to a specific area of a body to complete a certain task.

If you don't grunt while lifting, you're not lifting enough.
If you grunt while lifting, chances are, you aren't holding your air properly, and not lifting enough.
You should be holding your breath when doing the big 3 lifts.0 -
There are two men who work out together that are the cliched grunty jock weightlifters. To be honest, it gets rather annoying - especially since it's a tiny gym and it's usually is a small group of us trying to do a circuit or aerobics.
One day, I was feeling rather puckish after listing to what sounded like them pooing their pants for 20 minutes and decided to see if grunting actually helped.
It's my recommendation when using an ab roller to go "WHOOOSH!!" as loudly as possible when rolling out. (Bonus is you also wear a cape)
If anything, it'll get you a few minutes reprieve while the Grunters stop and stare at you. Unfortunately, we were all laughing so hard, it was hard to get back into the training routine.0 -

I stood there and watched. Then I took a picture. My eyes got as big as saucers when I saw him putting the weights on the barbell. Then I went home and thought about it some more.0 -

I was gonna post something about how I hold my breath during reps, but then I got to page 2 and found this0 -
When he grunts just moan back at him all sexy like {-;0

grunting is good. but no one grunts on the machines. grunt on the big lifts, only on the last set or two, and only a few reps.
then make sure your drop the weight.0
