  • I find it disturbing to see so many young people think that 110 lbs is an ideal weight. That scares me.

Yes, very disturbing indeed. This thread is just plain scary.

It sounds scary to me too, until I remember that my 5'4" daughter graduated HS at 106. She was very healthy and ate normally, she was just naturally thin at that age. When the young girls get to college they will put on their Freshman 15 and be a more 'normal' size. Some girls are just naturally that thin. What is bad is when girls that aren't naturally that thin, starve themselves or purge to get there. Health is more important than a number on the scale. Find a healthy weight for your frame and be happy with yourself.

ETA There are also girls/women older than teenage, that 110 is a healthy weight for them. There are apple and pear body shapes, and also a banana shape, which is a small slender frame that is naturally thin.

Yes this^ people come in all different shapes and sizes. Isn't this an 18+ site, so aren't we all adults here? I'm not trying to encourage anyone to eat below 1200 (net) but some people have mentioned they are doing this under their doctor's supervision---that seems responsible to me. We can't possibly know where everyone is coming from. There may be some people who are on the younger side, or inexperienced regarding diet, or just plain new here, and/or yes there are even folks who actually do have (or are recovering from) EDs but I don't think that is the majority. We are all here because we are dealing with our weight. I sort of trust that most adults can figure things out without me meddling (unless of course they ask). I see people here my height with GW I personally would find very high, but I trust they know their body best. We don't get this same kind of outrage on the threads where people might be considered dangerously overweight so why here? GW is just that, it is not set in stone it is something to work towards. And weight is deceiving, 112 and pure muscle is different than 112 no/little muscle. The way I see it is if someone asks it is fine to give advice otherwise what is the point of trying to control others/lecturing? If you are genuinely concerned with someone be a friend and send them a PM.

I completely agree. All hell would break loose if we pointed out to larger ladies how unhealthy we felt their current, or even goal weight is, yet it seems to be open season for people to criticise those who may be naturally smaller, based on their goal weights, without any knowledge of that person. BMI has a large range of normal ratios, because people vary naturally in their size and shape. 110 pounds is just two pounds lighter than 8 stone. Many people of similar height to me have goal weights of 140 pounds, which is 10 stones. At age 31 the heaviest and unhealthiest I have ever been is 9 st 4. If I gained to reach a "healthy" 140 pounds, I'd be far too large for my frame. I'm sure that you all don't think it acceptable to tell larger people they have an eating disorder, so it also shouldn't be acceptable to insinuate that everyone lighter has an ED. yes, people at both ends of the weight spectrum may indeed have an ED, but that really isn't for you to decide, based on the tiny amount of information you have before you here. I know from experience that I am strong and healthy when I am at 7 stone 7 and, hey, I even have a large *kitten* and big boobs at that weight, so I'm hardly going to be malnourished even at 105 pounds!

I find it disturbing to see so many young people think that 110 lbs is an ideal weight. That scares me.

I'm 5'4" and was under 110 through much of my 20's, sometimes as low as 103. I wasn't starving myself to get there either. I was just naturally skinny then. Not that disturbing really.

I actually don't have a narrow frame at all either. I'd consider myself big boned since I have a wide frame. I just did not gain weight when I was younger. So if someone has a narrow frame and has a goal weight of 110 I wouldn't consider that to even be so outlandish.

At my age now, my metabolism went to **** and I'm not there anymore, but back then it was just natural.

How many calories you eat a day: 1350ish net. I work out 5/6 days a week and tend to be eating 2000ish total on those days. The days I'm not working out I spend 95% of the day in bed or sat at a desk so 1350 is plenty.

I can't believe how many people are eating so little! I tried 1200 and not eating back exercise cals for a while and had no energy and strength.

I'm never going to be a low goal weight 5'4 either. I'm one of those who is larger framed and just bigger! According to body fat sites I'm about 107lbs lean mass at the moment (I'll take that with a pinch of salt but people do normally guess my weight as 10lbs or so less then it is). I'd just love to get down to about 20% body fat - wherever that takes me on the scale. At the end of the day though, a number is just a number and health matters more.

I probably graduated high school at that weight. I never gained the freshman 15 either. Didn't catch up to me until I hit my 30's

also, knowing that I was that weight once naturally will result in me keeping it in mind when I set my goal. I don't think I want to go quite that low now, but maybe 10 pounds heavier at 115 would be okay.

  • I haven't really been counting my calories. I put what I ate today in my fitness pal and couldn't believe how few calories I had (900). I ate every few hours. I eat clean mostly. Having only fruits, veggies, fish, chicken, and nuts. I do have a couple glasses of tea a day. lightly sweetened with sugar. That is one thing I'm not giving up yet. I am satisfied and full from eating this way. Three weeks in.

The low goal weight, especially on very young women, doesn't concern me all that much. It's the low goal weight coupled with very low calorie consumption that concerns me.

I was very thin, naturally, but I was that thin because I had very, very low muscle mass. Probably only about 80 pounds. And because, while I ate "whatever I wanted," I really didn't eat that much, or that well. I hit my late-20s, got a desk job, met my husband, and started eating regular meals instead of nibbling and snacking, and my weight "caught up to me."

Like everyone else, as I gained weight and as I got older, I didn't just gain fat, I gained lean body mass, too. That's everything but the fat. Organs, bones, muscle. Some muscle is always gained with weight, just like muscle is lost as we lose weight. How much muscle you gain or lose depends on your exercise/activity and your eating habits.

At my high weight of 160, I had about 110 pounds of lean body mass, so if you took every ounce of fat off my body, I'd STILL weigh more than I did in high school. I lost some lean mass as I lost, even trying my damnedest to keep as much as possible. My lean mass is currently between 106-110 pounds... I eat a LOT and push myself hard. So while I was "naturally" 110 pounds as a young'un, that's just NOT going to happen now.

So I urge everyone to find out their body fat percentage and lean body mass, THEN see if that goal weight is still realistic.
