My dad used to take me into the men's locker room at the YMCA when I took swimming lessons. The story goes that I noticed a man with a long ponytail (it was the '70s) and said loudly "Daddy!! I never saw a girl with a penis before!!!"

At the Fitness Center where I work, children under 5 must be with their parent in the adult locker room, children over 5 must go to the children's locker rooms. Except for children with special needs.

I don't understand the problem really. Is it better to leave a little girl alone in the women's locker room and expect her to manage on her own and to trust that nobody shady is in there with her while she's uncared for? She's four. She can not go into a public locker room alone. She is much much safer being with her father where he can keep her safe and keep her with him.

I understand that dilemma, but y'know, he has a shower at home. He doesn't NEED to go in the locker room. Or he could always ask a member of staff to help him fetch his things from a locker because he has a child.

I am in the "no biggie" boat on this, because bodies are bodies, and it's all just skin. HOWEVER, if there are family locker rooms, he should use them, and considering the fact that he's now done this twice (that you know of), I'd say he's making the wrong choice.

I used to go to a city rec center that didn't have family locker rooms, and everyone brought their kids in, and everyone was prepared for it and dealt with it. I can totally understand how, if there are family locker rooms available, men are not prepared and caught off guard by a child being in the locker room, so your frustration is acceptable.

Yeah, definitely inappropriate, considering there are family locker rooms. I would complain to the staff of that facility if you see him doing this again.

If she's four years old, she's obviously not working out with him, so what's the need for her to be in an adult male change room?

At my gym, there's a day care centre where people can leave their kids in a SAFE environment to play while they go work out. They're under adult supervision and they're safe, and the parents can pick them up when they're done. I wish more people used these, or more gyms had these! I think they're a great idea, and sure beats having a child in a place that's not suitable for them!

We have multiple family locker rooms. "What's wrong with you? This is a mens locker room and it's no place for a little girl!", I said. The morons reply? "Well she's four years old". . . . . Huh?

Sorry but look in the mirror and stop raging. And yes, she's 4. If she was 7 or so maybe you could be uncomfortable but you confronted some guy in the locker room about this? Really?!

For those wondering WHY she could be in there...my husband and I go to the gym a lot, and our kids go to the kids gym. However, there is both an indoor and an outdoor pool and we take the kids swimming now and then, so after our workouts, we pick-up the kids from the kids gym, and go to the locker rooms to change into, and then later out of, our bathing suits. And we shower with the kids after the pool. My son is now 3 and my daughter 7, so my daughter goes with me, and my son with my husband. If one of us is taking the kids swimming without the other, we just use the family locker room. I don't think it's that unusual to have them in the locker room. And, there are kids swim lessons at our gym too, so the kids use the locker room to change before/after that as well.

I wouldn't think twice if someone brought a 4 yr old boy into the women's locker room. I don't really see the big deal either. If there were family locker rooms available though then he's just an idiot.

She's 4 I don't see a big deal either. The centers around here the age for going into same sex change rooms is 6. Up until my oldest son was about just before 6 he came in the women's change room where there are naked women. He started wanting his own privacy so we started going to the family change room.

Not only is it wrong for the little girl to be seeing all those naked men even at the age of 4, she will most likely remember that. But I'm sure it makes the majority of the men very uncomfortable and there are so many perves out there so if they're not uncomfortable then that is also a problem. That should not be allowed to go on!!!

I soul and have had a fit if there was a 4yr old boy in the locker room. Not not a good idea and this dad had a choice to take her to a family room. If she sees her dad named at home that is not appropriate either. OUTRAGEOUS

It doesn't matter if the dad didn't think it was a big deal.
Clearly the OP and possibly others did. He can easily use the family locker room and be respectful of the other men that are NOT as comfortable being naked around a 4 year old girl.

Just out of curiousity, would the folks saying its ok for a 4 years old to enter a mens locker room. also say that its ok if a parent or some adult is watching porn in front of a 4 years old? Cussing? Do you fight in front of your 4 years old?

I'm not judging mind you, I am just curious since I am not a parent

I realize that this is not the issue here, but I just can't figure out why men have to "walk around naked" in the locker room.

I've seen women take their young boys around that age into the women's locker room and I didn't even consider it wrong.

Maybe it's because I'm a mom and I'm use to taking my kid everyone with me as well.

I see it almost the same as if I were taking my son to use the women's bathroom because I obviously wouldn't trust my young child to manage on his own in the men's restroom.

How is that outrageous? Nudity isn't something to be ashamed of. Yes, we have laws against running around naked(although in NY women are allowed to be topless and on Fire Island you're allowed to be naked on the beaches), but come on now! Not everyone is a pervert......what if they're nudists, or hippies? The human body is nothing to be ashamed of.
