Stop rolling your eyes at fat people in the gym!

And calling women skinny b!tches is just wonderful? How sad
Agreed. What that person said about this woman/group of women is just as bad as what the OP mentioned.
I have no problem with women who are in shape.
That's not why I was calling them a skinny B!tch.
I was calling them that because they have the audacity to stare at me, as if because I'm heavier, that I don't deserve to be there in the weight room. When they, themselves, are standing there, talking, not doing ANY work, and taking up equipment that I need.
If you're in there doing your thing, awesome. I don't give a second glance to people who are doing their work. But if you're in there, running your mouth ABOUT ME, and you haven't lifted a single weight.. Don't stare are me while I'm trying to do my work.
OH, of course. It's perfectly fine to use the derogatory term skinny b!tch, b/c of course nothing wrong with THAT. But we can't look at fat people the wrong way or it's offensive.0 -
They're exactly where they should be! And they have just as much right to be there as anyone else.
Instead of being a twunt, be nice. Smile. Say hello. Make them feel welcome, so they'll keep coming back.
(Added bonus: You'll feel better too.)
Is this personal experience, or how you feel the world works from your perspective?
From my perspective, I have never seen this at my gym. There is a woman who goes to my gym and she is easily 200lbs overweight. She can only walk on the treadmill, but nobody looks at her or comments or throws cans of soda at her. They carry on with their workout and have the same small talk with her that they have with anyone else.
But then, maybe Bracknell is a utopia...oh wait, no, it's the #1 chav town in the UK.

I sometimes forget I'm not the big girl anymore. When people stare at me, I think they're judging me for being overweight and at the gym. DH pointed out the other night that all the people staring were guys, and I was wearing something form-fitting. That made me feel even worse, until he said they weren't judging me negatively; they were checking me out. :blushing:0

I never roll my eyes at the fat people since i was/still am....i roll my eyes at the "Gym bunnies" who come in sit around for 10 minutes(then complain they had a hard workout) then get up and leave....or they come in sit down watch the hot guy lift and then leave...0

I love when the women with 10 pounds of make up on and hair that is perfectly done, while walking on the treadmill stare at you like your crazy for actually WORKING OUT... I didn't come for a fashion show I came to workout...
lol... agree! I guess I understand if you come straight from work, but when your makeup is still perfect after your workout... no hard feelings, I just feel a little awkward over here with my red face and sweaty hair...0 -
Who are you addressing exactly?
People who roll their eyes at fat people, apparently.0 -

Did they actually say anything to you? Were they really staring at you or did you just catch a glance? If they didn't say anything, can you really read their minds?0 -

Actually, they did say something. They said something along the lines of, "What's she doing in here?" and "Why is he with her?" (Referring of course, to my husband.)
Edited to add: One of the guys in there who sees me in there daily was nice enough to stick up for me and tell them that I was there working hard, and they should try it sometime. So I know it's not just me who's noticed it.0 -
My gym is part of a city rec center. I get annoyed and roll my eyes at the "kiddies" that come into the gym in groups, take up the majority of the equipment and just hang out in everyone's way. It doesn't happen too often. I am not the only one in there that feels that way and you can see it in the eyes of the regulars.
But other than those times everyone is helpful and friendly at the gym. We are all quick to help someone if we see them doing something improperly and most people always ask the closest person to the equipment if it is free. A couple of weeks ago I witnesses someone pass out or had a seizure while bench pressing. Lucky he had just got the bar back on the holders before it happened. We were all quick to get to him and got the medics there.0 -
I'll keep rolling my eyes at all the people using machines and going for eternal strolls on the treadmill hamster wheels.
Thanks. You come into my free weights area? Mad hugs for all. You keep pittering and pattering on the latest preacher curl machine to open: go back to jamba juice for your "healthy" candy.
Hard love for all. One. Hard. Love.
lmao! That was me once upon a time... until I figured out how to pick up heavy things! Now you can't get me out of the weight room and every female that comes in gets the nod of respect!0 -
Eh.... I roll my eyes at a lot of things but not technically at the people.. some of the things people do while at the gym make me roll my eyes but its never their size... and sometimes I even look like I might be staring at someone when in reality I am just sitting in my own little world zoned out.
I am fat, I have never once felt like someone was making fun of me or rolling their eyes at me ...0 -

You ran into something I've never witnessed or encountered. At least not since high school. There are of course jerks in this world, but it's best to ignore them. Kudos for the guy that stood up for you, though I seriously think it's better to ignore people like that. They either grow up eventually or people shun them.0 -
I avoid eye contact at the gym. The muscle-bound dudes always try to stare you down, as if you owe them fealty as you walk in. I'm afraid that if one of the testosterone fueled apes, did something foolish like push past me, I'd kick him in the neck.
So yeah, I just keep my head down and jam to my ipod....
Hmmm....so it's not ok to roll eyes at fat people but ok for you to call men who weight lift 'testosterone fueled apes'?? Not cool.0 -
It is so intimidating as a bigger person walking into a gym. I remember the feeling. People need to be accepting and encouraging!0

At my gym its quite the opposite. If there are people lifting and grunting loudly, deliberately showing off or dropping weights an alarm goes off and they are asked to leave lol.0

In...
...because this thread...again.
ETA: No, I have never seen this, at the gym or elsewhere, except maybe from a few teenagers who had that reaction to everyone. I'm just not convinced that it is an actual problem as much as it is a perception/interpretation problem.
ETAM: I should have been more specific...I haven't seen this *since high school*, and even then, more likely my freshman and sophomore years.0 -
Please put your orgasm face away. I fail to see it's relevance to this thread.0 -
I think these eye-rollers are mythical beings, like minotaurs or sasquatches. I have only ever seen people roll their eyes at gym *kitten*.0

Rolling eyes at fat people in the gym...
Who does that anyway???0 -

Let me guess? Planet Fitness....yeah....
Honestly, the grunting doesnt' bother me. Means they are lifting something heavy and really focusing on that and making sure they get that work out in. I even grunt sometimes on heavy sets, why? Because I am pushing and working with all my might to make sure I am getting stronger.0 -
I'm sorry I just have to add after reading everyones comments... Why are you all arguing, calling names and having judgmental opinions? That's not the point of this site, this forum, or what ANY one of us is trying to do. There is no way in HELL you will ever be like 'that' person etc. You can only be the best YOU so why doesn't everyone stop arguing and let's all go workout and encourage each other! EVERYONE needs improvement, to be active, to eat healthy. This ranting at each other is ridiculous. Pretty sure everyone on here is an adult and came here for encouragement right? You're all the problem, being mean to each other. ugh.0

A couple of bicep bros stood behind me and laughed at me once while I was squatting, saying things like "What is she even doing here? Mwahahaha" to each other. Thankfully it was only a couple months ago instead of at the beginning of my weight loss journey, I'm sure I would have cried for weeks.
After they were done loling at me they went and started doing tandem curls (two bros -- one unloaded barbell -- major WTFs) in a different squat rack while screaming dramatically. My husband and I stood behind them making of them while my husband worked on his 500 lb deadlifts. They turned red and ran away and I haven't seen them near the squat racks since.
Immature? YES. Satisfying? EXTREMELY.0 -

lol yeah. It doesn't bother me either, I was just stating their policy.0 -

I feel the same way....sad in here isn't it?

I've never seen or given negative reactions towards fat people in the gym... Except for those with a dry shirt who hang around the check-in counter talking with employees.
Otherwise none of that in my gym!0 -
The gym at my university is awful. Every time I went, someone commented on how I shouldn't be there. Every time I was in the locker room, someone said something. The most common was how the gym is only for healthy people, and I shouldn't come back.
I had a free membership there, and it is a very nice facility, but I paid for a membership at a gym I felt comfortable at. For me, the extra money was worth a gym where people didn't insult me.0 -
lol it's just ridiculous! I see the same people crying for help and encouragement and then BASHING other members! Wtf... be nice or keep your mouth shut. Or hell, if it really makes you feel better about yourself, get off your computer and go to the gym and walk around being mean to people in person, that'll make you look better. *sarcasm*0
