@alison--good job doing the strength work! :flowerforyou: That's what I really should be doing, but my heart's just not in it so I'm making do with cardio for the time being. Once school ends, I will get back into a strength training routine.

Wednesday wish- that I don't blow my calories tomorrow. I have portfolio review tomorrow after school for the interns. Dinner will be provided and it will most likely be Italian. I need to be good. I will be working it off on Friday if I do go over.
Field trip was great today. The kids and teachers had a wonderful time.

I've had a big release today under my YA pen name and it's been crazy all week getting ready. i don't think my eating has been too bad, but frankly i haven't been paying attention :laugh: i guess the scale shall tell. hope everyone is doing well.0

WOOT congrats Des on reaching such an awesome milestone.
Today has been a pretty good day. I got the kids off to school then came back home and worked really hard (I took a short nap) :laugh: Once I got done with that I went to the gym and zumba were she is still torturing us with squats. I swear I am going to have nightmares chanting left cheek right cheek at me. This evening was my strength training eval were they added another five machines to my routine. So tomorrow will be a whole new barrel of fun. I think my wish this week is that all of this exercise helps with some of the sagging skin issue. I swear I have literally been having nightmares about drowning in folds an flaps of loose skin. Ok I might be a little dramatic but still.........

@Des -- CONGRATS ON THE BIG FIVE OH! I totally get where you're coming from on 'how to keep motivated once you lose the fear'. Now I'm not worried that my health is terrible, and I can shop in regular shops again, I do tend to question what the point in carrying on is. That's probably part of why my weight loss has slowed a bit.
@Marca -- if you're doing all the right things then the scale will fall into line eventually.
@Karen -- I've now done strength 3+ times a week for two weeks, and although my weight's not down yet, my jeans are seriously loose. I'm doing dumbbells (a book called "Smart Girls do Dumbbells"), though I'm doing slightly higher weight/ lower reps than she recommends to start because of all the fit people round here who say 'lift heavy things and don't be scared'. I got over the boredom by doing it in the living room and putting on cookery shows or really junky tv like that, where you don't really need to follow a plot but can just tune in and out. Drawbacks: I am *STARVING* (I think I've missed my calorie target every single day) and I am often quite tired on strength days, especially when I put cardio in afterwards.
@Tammy -- One effect of the strength work is that I honestly thought my tummy was looking better today; I think having better ab tone affects the way all that saggy stuff looks.
OK. IKEA came round this morning and it was ok really. I apologised endlessly for the state of the house and didn't mention that I'd been tidying frantically for three days. Another six more bags of stuff to the charity shop (one of the charities fortuitously put a bag through our door for a pickup today as well, so we left a lot of stuff for them and don't even have to schlep it down), plus another crate of eBay stuff -- and I'm beginning to think I might have enough time to get some stuff on eBay in another couple of weeks. And now I'm off to a matinee in the West End, an actual reward. Thursday truth -- strength training is awesome. I really noticed the increased strength and flexibility when I was sorting out the study this week. And the improved cardio helped with all the running up and down the stairs.

@Alison~ I strength training and never thought I would. I’m not really good about doing it without my trainer but am getting there, especially because it’s pretty well known that strength training is better for weight loss than endless cardio – as a result, I’m doing strength training/cardio combined at each workout now to see if I get different results. I lift heavy too, my goal is to be sore the next day.
@Robin~Thanks for posting a link to the TDEE info, great post. I have done resting metabolic rate (RMR) assessments at my gym and follow that rather than TDEE. I have found that each TDEE calculator out there is different and also my TDEE is substantially higher (by 1000 kcal) than my RMR which makes me nervous. Great read though for those that use the TDEE approach.
@Marca~Sorry for your continued vertigo. I can certainly empathize with how debilitating that can be. I get it periodically when the crystals in my left ear get all messed up, I’ve gone through adjustments for it which helps.
@Molly~I have gone through periods where I’m tired. Lately, I’ve been tired because I’ve been working long hours and just on-the-go with very little down time. You definitely need to develop a regular bed time, even on the weekends, to keep your circadian rhythms in check. I go to bed at the same time every day, when I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue I had to get myself on a schedule to allow myself the rest it needed to recover. Exercise can help you sleep better, though – you just need to find the right time of day to do it, if you exercise too late it can be hard to fall asleep (for most people). Walking is great exercise, even if you have to break it up into several sessions throughout the day.
Thursday Truth~Well, my trainer pretty much benched me this week – he still thinks I’m overtraining and my whole body needs rest so he shut me down for a few days. I took off Mon-Wed from workouts but will go tonight for low-end cardio (no weights), skip tomorrow and then workout on Saturday. What’s interesting is that I have felt tired all week, so after I get home from work I’ve been taking an hour nap – I love naps! :bigsmile: I haven’t been completely lazy though, have been tackling projects around the house. Last night I moved all the furniture in my master bedroom and vacuumed everywhere (finding several hair accessories along the way - thanks Zoe). Had issue with toilet in half-bath, proud to say I watched a You Tube video and fixed it myself! Still have the office/game room and living room projects to tackle - hoping to have them completed before vacation.

Molly - it depends on what causes your tiredness. For most people exercise will create a positive effect for you and create more energy - its a win-win situation. As the weight starts coming off, your energy will increase as well. If you have bad knees allso, I have read that for every pound you lose, you are reducing about 4 pounds of stress off your knees.0 -

@RobinsEgg -- thank you for that thread. That leads me to my Thursday Truth:
I know that I've been told "eat 1200 calories a day" to lose weight for years and that ultimately it's wrong (for most people). However, when I do the numbers, they freak me out. It's telling me that my TDEE is around 2250 (depending on which calculator you use -- this is an average). Then they say to subtract 20% if you have 20+ pounds to lose. That puts me at around 1800 calories. Now when I compare it to the "1200 a day" it seems so counterproductive. I use the sedentary setting and then eat back my exercise calories. I'm ultimately new to this (joined last year but didn't do anything until January of this year). I started with 1300 calories and lost weight right away, but have slowed/stalled for a couple of months now. How have you all been successful? Have you found success using this method or something else?0 -
tlh0407~Like I posted earlier, I don’t use TDEE since I’ve had resting metabolic rate assessments done. I ate around 1,500 calories for a long time and just hit a wall, my trainer said I wasn’t eating enough – because we wanted an accurate caloric allotment I did this test which resulted in me needing to increase my calories by ~450. So I increased my calories to 1,950, slowly, and it really did make a difference. For most people eating just 1,200 calories a day isn’t enough – that is actually the least amount of calories a person should consume in a day. I also think that MFP guidelines for calories is a bit low and like you I find TDEE to be a bit high (scary high in some cases if you ask me), so I think finding some middle ground is a good starting point. I would say if MFP is saying to eat 1,500 and TDEE is saying 2,250, maybe aim for 1,875 and see how that works – you might be surprised at the difference it makes, I know I was. Food is fuel for our bodies, without the right amount our bodies just don’t work efficiently – so as strange as it sounds we need to eat to lose. :noway:0

tih - The Thread I recommended also says if you have more than 20 pounds to lose you can calculate your TDEE-30%. I tried to lose weight on 1200 cal. also and I just could not do it. I was hungry ALL the time and just plain miserable! I calculated my TDEE -30% and calculated it for a very sedentary lifestyle, which I have. My end calculations gave me 1425 calories, which I bumped to 1450 calories based on the MFP calculation, which was higher. I have now started losing weight, after being at a plateau for months. As of this morning I have lost 2.5 lbs.
I have been at this 2 years and still am no expert. The facts are you must take in less calories than you burn, but not drop so low that you screw up your metabolism. That low point seems to hover around 1200 cal. for most people. Hope this helps.0 -

Des - well done on losing 50 lbs! So have you thought about your motivation for the next stretch? You ARE looking very fine! Do you want to feel stronger? Walk further? Do more squats?
Marca - you are so strong to be able to live with your vertigo and nausea -- it sounds like a very tough illness - and I admire how you can laugh at your scale - you WILL have the last laugh, of course!
Toots - congrats on publishing your young adult book. Was it the one I read for you?
Boho - the IKEA people must have been quite an experience - I'll bet the really enjoy coming into real people's homes and seeing their goods in use. And congrats on getting all those bags to charity! Don't you just love that feeling of getting rid of old stuff?

Kah - so sorry you have been grounded for so long. I'm surprised you're not doing more weights in your situation, I would have thought that cardio is harder with your foot being out of commission....
Moving furniture is no small job and burns a lot of calories....the plus is finding all those goodies Zoe hid there. I remember a long time ago when I had a kitty I moved my sofa and found a bra I was missing.....didn't realize my kitty was fond of it :noway:

Hello everyone. I am finished with this semester! Four classes = 4 A's! Yay!
I am off until June 10th! Whoo hoo a few weeks of no school.
I have been doing horrible. I haven't gained. But haven't lost. I am DONE not trying. It's affecting me and depressing me. I am what holds me back from being happy.
So today starts back at tracking and paying attention to what I eat.
I think I may have a slight food addiction. Or maybe it's because I am depressed feeling.
I can't run right now because my knee has been hurting me, and it's my good knee that has been hurting ugh.
So I have to figure something out for exercise.0 -
Hi everyone. How is Thursday treating everybody? My day has been good so far. I got the neice and nephew off to school and went to the gym to do my new strength circuit. They added six more machines after my assessment last night. It was definitley alot more of a workout. My pectoral muscles are already a little sore. I shudder to think what they are going to feel like tomorrow:laugh: It is early release at the kids school so I didnt have time to do my cardio at the gym but I am getting ready to pop in leslie sanson and get some cardio in. I also have a short core routine I am supposed to be starting today. The fun just never ends.
Robin super huge congrats on busting the plateau. It sucks big time to feel like you are doing everyhting right and still not getting the results you think you should.
My Thursday truth is I am a horrible excuse maker. I am the queen at finding excuses to not do things I dont want to. It is something I am working on but it is definitley a work in progress. So many things that I want to improve on its hard to beleive I really do beleive I am a pretty good well rounded person.

I'm so excited. Dan Brown is one of my favorite authors and his new book, Inferno, was released yesterday - it arrived in the mail today. I can't wait to get started on it!
@Robin~Super congrats on breaking that plateau, great loss this week! :flowerforyou: I am doing weights, just haven't been doing them without my trainer - I need to do it own my own, too, though. The elliptical, arc trainer, and swimming don't put any strain on my Achilles so I've been able to do those things for cardio without any repercussions. The problem is that I live a very busy lifestyle leaving me with very little down time, I've had adrenal fatigue in the past and my last lab tests showed I still have elevated cortisol levels - my trainer fears its preventing my body from healing like it should, hence his reason for telling me to stay out of the gym and take some time to rest and relax.
@Tammy~Your posts crack me up. You are doing awesome with the exercise, keep it up!
@Tina~Awesome semester! I'm sorry about your knee acting up, if you have access to a pool or elliptical either would be great exercise without aggravating your knee.0 -
Kelly-Your trainer sounds like he is well aware of your training routine and the fact that you might be over-training. It is important to rest your muscles and your body. I understand how addictive exercise is and I am also guilty of over-training at times. So happy that you have a great trainer who knows what he is doing.
Tina- There are other exercises you can do even with your knees hurting. Try to work on your core, strength training, upper body that way you can still exercise while resting your knee. You can also try a spin bike since that will keep your knees in a straight line so they may not hurt while riding. Take it slow and see how it goes. Congrats on the 4-A's, Awesome work.
jt- I learned that I could survive on 1200 calories it was too low for me. I was tired and hungy most of the time. I felt better when I upped my calories to 1560. I really did lose weight around 1800 when I first started. I have been tempted to go back to that number and see what happens. What type of foods are you eating? That may also be impacting your weight loss. Good luck with adding the new machines to your routine.

Truth- Tonight I went after the sweets and indulged in several deserts. I know I blew it tonight but didn't really care, I was looking forward to the cookies and brownies tonight so I did not eat as much throughout the day. So I am chalking up it to an off day and will be back on track for tomorrow.0 -
Hi everyone! I had a calendar committee meeting after school and then we had our union rep dinner, so kind of a late night for me (for a school night). I've caught up on posts but will skip personals tonight.
Thursday Truth:
I have to admit my spring "cold" has turned into a full-blown sinus infection. :grumble: I'm so congested and have pretty much lost my voice to boot. The good news is my seniors are DONE!!! All that's left is grading their final exam essays next week. We also have an Institute Day tomorrow, so no students.

i do. all the time. i never feel well rested. i can't even remember the last time i felt as though i wasn't exhausted. exercise helps some. cutting out most carbs works better. but exercise does seem to make a difference for at least an hour or two afterwards.0 -

The sleep specialist has put me on a CPAP with O2 at night, but nothing helps. According to the CPAP machine I am averaging 6.5 hours per night but that is broken and sporadic.
Friday fitness: Not much. I was able to go for a short walk. I used the cane to take the pressure off of my knee and iced it when I got home. Pretty pathetic, but at least I was moving.

First, welcome Sasha, I'm on here frequently, sometimes lurking, sometimes posting. I haven't yet got the knack of responding to many people's posts.
Friday fitness: will try for a walk tonight. Having a dizzy day...like Marca, I have vertigo...it's a bugger, but it could be worse.
One the positive side, I've been cooking healthy and logging calories and staying around my goal. sometimes over and sometimes under.
For all you great cooks out there I have a question: How do you cook beets? I have peeled and boiled and not liking them as much as the canned ones. I don't want to add a lot of seasoning or fat to them, but I know they're sweet and delicious when they come out of the can. Also, it takes me about 1 hour to boil them properly. Any cooking tips or ideas? I'm trying to add them to my diet.
Funny, yesterday, I boiled them so long they lost their red colour and turned white!! lol!
Also, I've been slowly climbing out of the doldrums and have been looking for a new username and every time I try one, it's already taken. Anyone have any ideas?0 -

I have no problems walking, it's just running. And I really want to run. But anything is better than nothing. So I will either start using my elliptical or walking. I'd love to do a Jillian Michaels DVD again, but I dont think my knee will handle it.
I logged my food yesterday and was under. I am logging my food today. I will continue logging.
I have been looking at pictures from just 6 months ago and the amount of weight I have gained back is frustrating. I haven't gained it all back and I wont gain anymore back. My weight will go down. But the weight gain has greatly affected me. I am depressed. It's caused issues. So I have to fix this to fix me. I'm unhappy with myself. Everything else in my life is amazing, except me and not liking myself affects everything else.

Tina - you're really doing great - getting all A's in your classes and maintaining your weight throughout, and suffering through with a knee injury. Sorry you're depressed and feeling like you might have a food addiction. This is a good reason to log your food especially the time of day you eat and drink your water too. Are you drinking pop (soda)? I had one the other day after a long period of abstinence and I was surprised that it immediately made me feel hungry. I was SO amazed by that!
Skinny - so sorry you have a sinus infection and have lost your voice - what is it like to be a teacher without a VOICE???? Thanks goodness you dont have students today.
Toots - great excerpt - she had a smile like a coat hanger shoved in her mouth upside down - I LOLLED!

Melancholy - I can't help you with the beets, but with finding a new users name, try this. Try substituting an exclamation mark for an L or an i or precede your name with a number, that should help you figure out a user name.

Cooking beets: You can boil them or roast them, but you do it before you peel them. Leave the tail and about an inch of the stem on them. Cook until they are fork tender. They do take quite a bit of time. When they are cool enough to handle, cut the top and tail off and the peel with come right off in your hands with a little rubbing, no need for a knife. Then you can dice them or slice them, and rewarm in the microwave. I like to salt them while I'm cooking them. I usually boil them. Good luck.

Kaye, great tips on cooking beets...Here I thought I was such a great cook and I couldn't cook a beet! I'm going to boil them next time like you do and then reheat them. I didn't know you should leave the skins and 'tails' on. thanks again.0
