I really appreciate this thread. I've found myself in the same situation for the last year (more or less). I've made excuses and allowed myself freedom on vacations which do nothing but snowball me into the worst of it. I've sat at the dinner table over greasy pizza and a ice cream sundae and promised myself, "This is your last hurrah!", but each time I've failed to bring myself to where I want to be. Monday I started new again. I stepped on the scale for the first time in 4 months or so and found I'd gained 10 pounds, and was dangerously close to a weight I know I'd break down at if I never hit.

And so began a drive for healthier eating. A drive for exercise. A drive to give up soda and feel better. I'm doing okay, but I'm Type A and each day I find myself beating myself up over something I've eaten. Either I'm over my calorie count, or under it by too much, or I've been good except for that small ice cream, or I had a night off and went out to eat, or I'm under calories but ate fast food. It doesn't matter, I can't stop being angry at myself for not being perfect. SO...

Just for Today - I won't be perfect, and that's okay.

I love this. I have an all or nothing personality. I frequently slip into thinking, "I can't exercise for an hour, so I can't exercise at all." Or something like that. Just for Today: I will accept my best, imperfections and all.

I really can relate to this. I know MANY MANY times my hubby and I have said, we're going to start our diet tomorrow so we're going to pig out today. Yeah, that happened all the way until I was 130 pounds overweight.

So, just for today I'm going to make healthy food choices and go to the gym.

I love this! A lifestyle change is a lifetime commitment ---- a lifetime (if you're lucky) is a LONG time! Sometimes it is so overwhelming to think about.

Focusing on the day at hand is always the best method for enjoying the moment and staying focused! Thanks for the reminder. Just for today I will drink my water, get in my exercise and eat within my calories. I can do anything for just one day, right?
  • Just for today I will let go of regrets, commit to making the changes I need to make so the regrets don't continue, and try to be the best wife, friend, sister, employee, and human I can be...

Thanks for this post, I needed it :)

I don't know you but your story sounds a lot like mine when I first started. I read a book by Bob Harper called "Are you ready?". He has some writing excercises to do about your relationship with food. It changed my life. I am learning to not give food power (healthy or not) over me. I started my journey 131 days ago at 402.6 lbs. I could barely move. Today I have lost 73.8 lbs and I have walked three 5K's. I still have treats but I plan it into my calorie count. Before I eat the treat I ask myself, "Why do you want this? Are you hungry, angry, celebrating, etc? Once I know the reason then I make the choice. I try very hard not to eat my emotions (sadness, loneliness, boredom, anger, happy, etc). Since i have come to recogonize when I am using food to stuff my feelings it no longer soothes those feelings. I hope you can figure out what works for you. I think saying "Just for today" is the first step in taking control of your choices.

    Best of luck.
I just read that this is a continuing post. So "Just for today" I will get up and walk so my legs, heart and mind can be healthy.
    Love your story.

And I love your story Kara. Your progress is awesome and inspiring.

Just for today I will base my decisions on what is best for me.
  • Just for today: I will not let the fact that I only have 369 calories left for dinner freak me out AND I will get out and exercise this evening so I can eat more. (but stay in range)

Just for Today: I am stronger than ever before!
  • Wonderful Inspirational words! We got this!
  • I read through this for the first time today. Sometimes you feel like you are the only one struggling on this journey. It was so helpful to read the struggles of other people. There are so many excuses for not sticking to healthy eating - I won't call them reasons, the journey is long. I forget sometimes that I didn't get this way overnight and I am not going to lose it overnight. Thank you to all of you for being brave enough to share your story.

Just for today I will focus on healthy eating today and not worry about yesterday or tomorrow.
